Draki how old are you?  My graduation we faced that way - 22 years ago.

That was the golden age.  Speaker was VP George H. W. Bush.  President Reagan had given his "farewell speech" out on the Plain that spring.  They activated a reserve Engineer unit to turn the plain around, putting the reviewing stands in front of Washington Hall.

"On Thursday, the Senate passed historic Wall Street reform. This movement proved again that the strongest special interests, who for so long have called the shots in Washington, can be beat."
"
But this fight is not yet over. And it is up to us to overcome this final test and pass reform into law. When we do, the power of this movement to make change in Washington -- despite the best efforts of the special interests -- will no longer be up for debate."

Two snippets from a friend who received the email....
In the middle of the letter he asks for his "just $5.00 and you can click on the link and donate"

What I'm curious about, though is did they pass the bill the way he is intimating they did?

Many of the images that appear today on Facebook were deeply offensive to Muslims and non-Muslims alike/ U.S. is deeply concerned about any deliberate attempt to offend Muslims or members of any other religious groups/ Do not condone offensive speech that can incite violence or hatred/ We respect any actions that need to be taken under Pakistani law to protect their citizens from offensive speech/ There needs to be a balance in restricting offensive speech and continuing to protect and promote the free flow of information Know your enemy, graduates.

Wow, 7 kids you must be in the poor house paying for tuition.

I have a friend who graduated as an engineer too.....

There aren't any jobs and the already laid off engineers with years of experience are getting any that do pop up.  The government is hiring though,  but not engineers, the people who majored in international affairs and the like are getting those jobs.

Heard on the radio that some WS guy thinks the next bubble to burst is the government.  then last night, Batchelor had on the guy who wrote the black swan book.  It is worth listening to.  He was in the last hour of the night.  He said he went to a meeting at the WH, a big meeting with the three muskateers of finance there and everyone waiting to see BO.  He said he stayed exactly one hour, never saw the prez, started to have back pain and realized his body was manifesting his discomfort.  He basically said it was his belief that they had no idea what they were facing and could not even identify the problem.  He said he tried to get them to see the problem and they couldn't and they still don't see the problem.  He said he left there and went into seclusion for a year to add two chapters to his book and republish the book and to try and figure out how to get out of this mess.  He sounded like such a sincere man.  the way he spoke, if he is correct, it would require a complete change in the way we view things and he wasn't sure we could do it.  Not the American people, the government and the government people, they are the ones he was worried about.  You really should listen, it's very eye opening.

I think it depends on where the "new immigrants" are from.

If they are predominantly from cultures that have acquired a socialist mindset (like lower socio-economic classes from Mexico and Central America) then you can be pretty well assured that they will vote almost exclusively Democrat for as many generations as it is economically beneficial to them. If they remain a permanent underclass, and get contaminated with an Anti-American grievance mentality, then they and their antecedents will vote Left forever until the money runs out.

Sorry to harsh your mellow dude.

Only because the media turned him into a hollywood production instead of reality.

At some point, we have to stop blaming the media. The information is out there because we all found it. Everyone knew about the Wright church. Everyone knew his experience, his lack of a record. They were swayed by speeches and the guy's race.

I, though it may be racist to some, think he is Prez because he's a black guy that could read well.  Whomever was the Democrat was going to win, but THIS GUY?

97 I just had a flash of insight on Obama after his "new world order" speech today at west point. Previously, I have assumed that he was just a crank Chicago poltician that says X when he really means Y, where Y = classic liberal orthodoxy. But it has always been hard to square the circle that is Obama's foreign policy philosophy compared against other classic liberals like, say, JFK. That is because, in a nutshell, Obama isn't that enamored with America (JFK, like him or not, did love America). Just today I finally understood Obama's foreign policy. I think Obama looks at the west and concluded that we have been deluding ourselves. I would bet money that he looks at slavery, small pox blankets to native americans, CIA interventions overseas, etc., and concludes that the US is basically rotten, and I bet he thinks the average conservative is just deluding him/herself with nationalism. I bet he also thinks Iran, Venezuela, Great Brittain, etc., are also basically rotten. In other words, people are generally rotten, and thus why not all work together to "better" the world. I bet Obama thinks all countries just need to get "honest" about their rotteness, drop all the "nationalistic rhetoric" about why this or that country is better than another (remember that quote from Obama a while back where he basically said (paraphrasing) "I think America is great the same way an Iranian thinks Iran is great"), and just work together to improve standards of living for people around the world. I bet he sincerely believes he has a positive vision for the world, and in a way (if I'm right) I suppose he does. Of course, it's all complete BS. There are real differences between countries, and exemplars of rottenness don't make a country/nation/people rotten. In truth, there has to be some sort of "net" calculation of the goodness vs rottenness of a country, and when you take into account that goodness of the American people and the positive, life and happiness enabling results that have flowed from the US people and exported around the globe since our founding, there really is no Country on earth that compares to the US. When you look at totalities and the essence of the values that make up the US culture, we are profoundly good, happy, free. In other words, we are the very opposite of rotten, notwithstanding that our country has done rotten things. This is the sad story about Obama. He hasn't got past the rotten. And so he wants a new world order based not on common bonds of freedom, positive life/happiness values, but instead on common threads of rottenness. Of course his ideas will fail, because his premises are profoundly misguided and false. Iran, Hugo Chavez, North Korea net-out as thouroughly rotten nations. We don't have common bonds with them. $10 bucks says Obama likes art that focuses on desparity, suffering and weakness. He doesn't strike me as a guy that would hang art depicting triumph, heroic goodness and happiness.

100 Here's a shining example of Teh Won's diplomatic skills.

US lifts sanctions against Russians linked to Iran

The Obama administration on Friday removed sanctions against three Russian organizations the U.S. had previously accused of assisting Iran's effort to develop nuclear weapons.
Penalties against a fourth Russian entity previously accused of illicit arms sales to Syria also were lifted. The timing of the decisions, published in Friday's Federal Register but not otherwise announced by the State Department, suggested the possibility of a link to U.S. efforts to win Russian support for a new U.N. Security Council resolution expanding sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

102 One of my most pleasant recent memories was going to see my now son-in-law graduate from the AF Academy in '08. It was Bush's last Academy appearance (for those who don't know, the President, VP, SecDef, and Service Secretary cycle through the Academy commencement speeches each year).

It was a chilly, overcast, drizzly day which kept the AF Thunderbirds from doing their traditional airshow to salute the new Lt.s, but Bush stayed there for the whole thing. In addition, he offered high-fives, low-fives, chest bumps, cellphone "hello's" to Mom and Dad in the audience, and warm embraces to each new Lieutenant. One guy even asked Bush for the American flag pin off his lapel--and imagine this--Bush gave it to him. As an AF veteran myself, I simply cannot imagine a prize of this magnitude.

I've got a list of differences a mile long with the Bush domestic agenda, but as far as his pursuit of the war we still are very much involved in, and his love for his troops, I will love the man forever.

I do try not to be cynical, but I just don't think Zero has that level of love in him.

Well, he did return the bust of Churchill before he'd barely settled into the Oval.  There was a guy on Beck awhile back who has visited the WH under Barry, and said every.single.wall is lined with photos of The One.  And there's a staffer whose job is to change them out every week.  So I don't know about Barky's taste in art, but he does truly seem to enjoy looking at his own image every where he turns.

Damn.  Now I've harshed my own mellow.

The drug-cartels have taken to patrolling a lake on the border between Texas and Mexico.  It's gotten so bad that people will not cross into the Mexican side of the lake to fish because of the threat of violence.  Several people have been robbed at gunpoint already.

Here's a news report.

174 O/T:
Ground Zero Mosque Plans Might be Derailed

The plan to build a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero may have hit a snag, due to an over 20-year pending landmark status.

The American Society for Muslim Advancement purchased the 152-year-old building at 45 Park Place last year for $4.8 million.  Their controversial plan to tear down the building and construct a 13-story mosque and community center has had many critics who feel it's disrespectful to those lost during the September 11th attacks.

A 1989 decision by the Landmarks Commission to propose the landmark status of the building may now prevent the building from being razed and the $100 million mosque from being constructed.

One of my former employees' oldest son graduated from West Point in 2002- the bicentennial class.

GWB spoke at the commencement, and shook the hand of every Cadet as they received their diplomas and bars. He told my employee's son as he shook his hand "I couldn't do what you have done."

Could you imagine Obama being that humble with anyone, as a means of paying a compliment?

LTG Bill Lennox, the Supe at USMA at the time, was a real class act, at least as far as I was concerned.  When he got up on the stage to give his comments to the graduating class ('04), his first words were "it's a great day to be a soldier."

Doc -

They have changed up the curriculum - heavens, things change!    I was class 60-S-89 and after graduating Ordnance OBC at Redstone, I went to Eglin for the the operator's course - mostly demo, recon, chemicals, digging and rigging. Then to the Head for the EOD course - ground, air, IED's, and nukes.

Then another 3 weeks at Redstone for an additional Army piece - went to the FBI IED school (not enrolled in the course just some training and how to work with the LEOs on IED incidents), and some extra work on Army special ordnance and chem stuff.

Sounds like maybe you are doing the recon, chemical, and rigging and digging at Redstone, and then actual EOD stuff and demo at Eglin?
