3 But how to get it out to the masses who haven't thought about this subject before?  We're at a teachable moment, where lots of people who voted Obama are now realizing they made an error -- it would be good to expose them to this ad to help them understand the magnitude and nature of that error.

That's sort of related to the one minor problem in the video-if we go down, China goes down harder because it's "investment" evaporates and it loses the market for its goods.  At least I doubt France and Greece are going to pick up the slack.

Kind of like that old idiom "If you owe the bank 1,000 dollars, you have a problem.  But if you owe the bank 1 million dollars, the bank has a problem".

Except this "bank" may have upwards of 100 million disgruntled people willing to overturn the current government.  The ChiComs can't possibly run them all down with tanks.

/In the end, there will be only chaos.

At least I doubt France and Greece are going to pick up the slack. There's another problem, if China goes down we are boned. Not much talk about it these days because the msm loves the idea that China is surging but most of their growth has been a gov't funded myth. They have a hollow economy that is very close to the tipping point as well. We are in a symbiotic relationship with China now because our addiction to spending and debt and their long term belief of centrally managed economies. It is not going to end well for either of us.

Posted by: Rickshaw Jack at October 21, 2010 03:42 PM (RVfdF)

33 JackStraw

I had read an article about why China keeps buying our debt.

In the article they talked to several of the Chinese honchos that run/barter the trade relations between the US and China, The Chinese think that the US will "R&D" it's way out of this mess.  They (China) believe that the US will invent something that changes life as we know it within 10-20 years.

Posted by: Rickshaw Jack at October 21, 2010 03:49 PM (RVfdF)

34 They (China) believe that the US will invent something that changes life as we know it within 10-20 years.

So they're basically playing craps.

Posted by: Methos at October 21, 2010 03:54 PM (Ew1k4)

35 Well, the other theory is they'll "buy" the right to defend, say, South Korea for a trillion in debt forgiveness. And then there's Japan. And Taiwan.

Posted by: Al at October 21, 2010 03:59 PM (MzQOZ)

36 >>Rickshaw Jack at October 21, 2010 07:49 PM (RVfdF) Possibly. But I tend to think the answer is simpler. When you own a countries debt, you own them in the most fundamental and powerful way without ever firing a shot. When you give up the ownership and the control of your destiny to another country what do you really have?

Posted by: JackStraw at October 21, 2010 04:00 PM (VW9/y)

37 Great ad, except for the part of Chinese being anything but a massive circle jerk in 2030. That thing sort of happens when you abort your chicks and only have dudes roaming around looking for anything to fuck. And Chinese owning American debt. How does that contribute to world domination? The whole premise of the spot is that America fell into the shit hole. And this is suppose the make China the economic superman? It's kind of like owning all the Confederate dollars in the world? . Want the fuck is that going to do for you? To put it another way...

Step 1: Corner the market on the most worthless sovereign debt. Step 2: ??? Step 3: Profit.

Look, no doubt Democrats are driving this country down down down. But to compare our economy with China's is laughable. China is the biggest house of cards propped up by mindless central planning, and murderous social policies. China is always 30 seconds away from complete collapse (And when it does, it won't be good for anyone).

Thus, this ad is bullshit as it reeks of a Perot-like understanding of world economies,  and fails to distinquish  the ever increasing terrible central planning here in the US with China's criminally preposterous central planning. The implication is absurd. Chinese bullshit is certainly no better than ours. To believe otherwise, you would have likely suffered from long-term carbon monoxide inhalation or are Thomas Friedman.

@37: "When you give up the ownership and the control of your destiny to another country what do you really have?"

A large nuclear arsenal, the fact that you're still the only country in history to use that sort of thing in combat, and the bulk of the population of your largest creditor (who currently lack any meaningful second strike capability) in nicely massed urban centers.

So yeah, they can tweak our balls over the debt, but only so far - if they actually put our nation at risk, we might decide that they've outlived their usefulness, especially if we have no other means of responding.  It's MAD in a slightly different format.

Posted by: Dr. Love at October 21, 2010 04:13 PM (STTZD)

44 The debt to China debacle is just more proof that Obama doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

Why the fuck did he think we've always lent money to desperate nations in strategic areas, knowing we'd never get it back? LEVERAGE! It's all about leverage.

Now they have it.

I can't fucking believe we find ourselves in this position.

Posted by: jmflynny at October 21, 2010 04:28 PM (bM9l4)

45 >>We only have to appease China if we want them to buy more debt But we do. They already own close to a trillion dollars in our debt and that number grows monthly. Who exactly do you think continues to fund our monthly budget deficits? The Chinese own almost a trillion followed closely by the Japanese. The Brits are relative pikers at only close to $300 billion. Our only solutions so far have been to print more money and keep interest rates depressed but that is a stalling tactic not a solution. We have a trillion dollar a year crack habit and China is our dealer. I honestly don't think most people understand how fucked we are.

46 As someone mentioned above, it wouldn't do for them to lose their biggest trading partner, so that's on our side.

I was at an industry conference the past several days (a typically conservative industry) and the panel of economists put to rest the notion that the US doesn't produce anything anymore and that all the manufacturing has moved to China. The US is still number one with 24% of all output. A large part of China's growth, substantial growth, has been in proportion to the manufacturing outsourcing from Japan, of all things. I didn't see that coming. And, of course, they are manufacturing a bunch of shit products: Think dollar store trinkets.

I feel quite certain that they are the world's leader in producing those rubber piles of dog crap and those little ping pong paddles with the ball that's attached with a rubber band. Keep in mind: In China, Buick is a luxury brand.

48 >>I was at an industry conference the past several days (a typically conservative industry) and the panel of economists put to rest the notion that the US doesn't produce anything anymore and that all the manufacturing has moved to China. I was in the UAE last week, I'll be heading back soon. There is a good chance we will be moving a substantial part of our manufacturing there. Not because we want to or because it's cheaper. We are being forced to consider options such as this because the US DOT is putting restrictions on our company that none of our international competitors face. We have been fighting this for years and I can't begin to describe the insanity of dealing with the US gov't, particularly now, it defies description. But the long and short of it is the US gov't is forcing us to move manufacturing jobs, good jobs with benefits that we pay, overseas. More people on unemployment while dickheads like Obama rail against evil capitalists. And our debt grows.

50 U.S. DOT?

They are devastating the trucking industry by imposing one stifling piece of regulation after another: EOBRs, new low-emission engines, idling rules Hours-of-Service reduction, "Comprehensive" Safety Analysis 2010. Don't even get me started on what the west coast politicians, environmental wackos and Jimmy Hoffa Jr. have combined to do to the drayage industry.

If they're putting any portion of the hurt on your industry/company as they've place upon the backs of truckers, God Bless ya, because they are seemingly out to cripple those poor folk.

I'm a huge fan of trains, and of intermodal in particular, but damnit, there's isn't a train around that can deliver a load of tube socks to the back of a local Target. And, intermodal doesn't have the capacity to take up the slack. It's as if DC has no idea how crucial the supply chain is to the functioning of this economy. Or perhaps they know precisely how important it is and know that by crippling the chain, they can force a particular way of life upon the citizenry.

Any way you slice it, the end result is not pretty.

That ad gets to the heart of the matter. Does it make me uncomfortable? Absolutely, yes. What about you?

I think JackStraw nailed it:

When you own a countries debt, you own them in the most fundamental and powerful way without ever firing a shot. When you give up the ownership and the control of your destiny to another country what do you really have?

Posted by: NM Hick at October 21, 2010 05:49 PM (IzuWw)

53 While I'm against government waste and consider probably 75% of all government spending to be waste or worse, here's a problem with this ad: China owns only a small portion of our national debt. Not most of it. Most of our debt is domestically owned. About 33% of it is owned by foreigners (43% of public-owned debt). Of the portion that is foreign owned, China owns under 21%. Of total debt, China owns under 6.5%; of debt owned by the public (excludes intragovernmentally held), China owns 9.5%. So "of course, we owned most of their debt" is not even close to being true. It never has been. And China is shedding US debt ownership. It isn't on the way to being true that China owns most of our debt.

Posted by: D1Stewart at October 21, 2010 09:10 PM (l6DpZ)

54 Somebody please show me the historical evidence that owning a defaulted sovereign debt turns out to be great, wonderful move for the country holding the debt?
