— DrewM From Michael Bloomberg to various bloggers and commentators, more than a few liberals have taken to charging those who oppose the Ground Zero Mosque with intolerance and attempting to curtail religious freedom.
Much like most of the charges of racism we hear from the left these days, this is a content free way to put your adversaries on the defensive and shut down debate without engaging your opponents on the merits of the issue. If they can also stigmatize conservatives in the process, so much the better.
From Bloomberg's histrionic speech that is garnering so much praise.
“This morning, the city's Landmark Preservation Commission unanimously voted to extend -- not to extend -- landmark status to the building on Park Place where the mosque and community center are planned. The decision was based solely on the fact that there was little architectural significance to the building. But with or without landmark designation, there is nothing in the law that would prevent the owners from opening a mosque within the existing building.“The simple fact is, this building is private property, and the owners have a right to use the building as a house of worship, and the government has no right whatsoever to deny that right. And if it were tried, the courts would almost certainly strike it down as a violation of the U.S. Constitution.
“Whatever you may think of the proposed mosque and community center, lost in the heat of the debate has been a basic question: Should government attempt to deny private citizens the right to build a house of worship on private property based on their particular religion? That may happen in other countries, but we should never allow it to happen here.
From Adam Serwer of the American Prospect.
I'm glad Bloomberg is standing up for religious freedom and tolerance, and defending the rule of law against the passing bigotries of the moment is part of his charge as mayor....The Islamic community center near Ground Zero will most likely be built, but that doesn't solve the underlying problem--one of the two major American political parties is increasingly committed to denying equal rights to an unpopular group based solely on who they happen to be (the GOP), while the other party, which knows better, is too cowardly to do something about it (the Democrats).
The Atlantic Wire has a round up of those praising Bloomberg and deriding Republican 'bigotry'.
Here's the problem with Bloomberg and those praising him...they don't actually have any evidence of people wanting to deny Muslims the right to practice their religion. Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich are the two most high profile Republicans to take on this issue. Read their respective statements and show me where any of them call on the government to enforce their political will on the Mosque organizers.
Read Dan Senor's "Open Letter" in the WSJ to the mosque organizers. Show me the religious intolerance, show me the attempt to stifle freedom of worship. I'll wait. The thing is, you won't find any because there is none. What there is is an appeal to decency and an understanding of the sensibilities involved. Qualities Senor notes Americans have shown to Muslims before.
The American people have shown themselves to be respectful of Muslim religious sensibilities—even in cases in which it was not clear to them why or how those sensibilities were being offended. We shall confine ourselves to one example among hundreds. The original name for the military operation against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan was "Operating Infinite Justice." Several leading Muslim scholars and clerics objected that the term was offensive to Muslims because "infinite justice" can come only from Allah. The American government immediately changed the name to "Operation Enduring Freedom," with the full support of the American people. The name seemed to us to be immaterial to the mission—which is why we judged the change to be a worthy gesture to people whom we did not wish to offend but hoped to honor. Similarly, the exact street address of your cultural center cannot matter to the performance of its mission—but it very much does matter to the perceptions of your fellow Americans. We urge you to reconsider.
Those who charge 'intolerance', 'bigotry' and the see the death of freedom of worship never actually quote anything a mosque opponent says, they just throw out the charge and move on. Well, in fairness, Greg Sargent of the Washington Post does have a specific complaint...Gingrich and the ADL suggest ideas on how far away the mosque should be from Ground Zero.
The horror! The creeping jackboot of Nazism is upon us! Can armed gangs killing innocent Muslims and the repeal of the First Amendment be far behind?
Now, if you want to see someone threaten the use of government power to squash religious belief, then look no further than Democratic Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey. She floated that idea that the tax exempt status of the Catholic Church should be reviewed because of the participation of bishops in the health care debate.
Funny but I don't recall Democrats getting worked up about a Catholic Bishop comparing Arizona's immigration law to Nazism.
Liberals are also famous for their willingness to infringe on people's right to express their religious and political views when it comes to access to abortion clinics.
Apparently the boundaries of religious freedom and the First Amendment follow the rough contours of the Democratic Party's agenda. Good to know.
Like the claims of racial slurs being shouted at Congressmen leading to the health care vote, evidence of real animosity or bigotry isn't offered because it doesn't exist. But that's neither here nor there as the point of these charges isn't to shed light on bigots, it's to end debate and protect liberals from having to honestly say what and who they support.
If the issue is the Landmarks Board meeting, take it up with the city. Palin, Gingrich and the opponents of the mosque project didn't invent the process the organizers had to go to through to get municipal approval for the project. Yes there were protesters at the Landmarks Board who didn't argue solely on the aesthetic merits of the building but why are they, and they alone, held to such an exacting standard? Why don't we hear similar complaints about the danger to freedom when environmentalists try to use every imaginable law to keep some people from enjoying their property rights to their full extent? Where's the bitter outrage about that?
FTR- I don't think the Landmarks Board should not have considered anything but the historical significance of the building. I don't like it when government agencies overstep their mandates and authority. I also don't like when people abuse the landmark process and deny owners the right to use their property as they see fit. Can most of these liberals say the same?
Why do liberals want to argue about the religious freedom strawman? Because they are losing the argument both nationally and locally in NYC.
How badly does this issue cut? NY Senator Chuck Shumer and Rep. Anthony Weiner (who apparently wants to be Mayor of NYC some day) don't want to talk about it. Those two guys are famous for their willingness, nay, borderline psychotic need to talk about anything as long as they are on TV.
The bottom line is no one is denying that Muslims have a right to worship and that if they meet all local ordinances the organizers can do whatever they want with their property. But freedom of religion does not equal freedom from criticism, debate or persuasion.
What's really going on here is as sickening as it is predictable...liberals simply want to shutdown debate by hurling unproven slurs at people as a substitute for defending their position.

It is imperative that Bloomberg and his ilk go on the offensive here, because if too many Americans start to realize that Islam is an orientalistic conspiracy hell-bent on destroying everything in its path, then it won't be too long after that before most Americans start scratching their heads and wondering whether the same isn't true of Bolshevik-Phariseeism.

Apparently, we must be tolerant of Islam's imperative that they build mosques on the sites of great Muslim victories. 9/11, to Muslims, represents the greatest Muslim victory in centuries. Just ask the Imam organizing this triumphalist slap in the face -- when he's off-camera.
As for his Imperial NooYockish Majesty, Bloomberg, apparently he is afraid his new friends will saw his head off -- why else is he exhorting us to tolerate the intolerable?
Let us erect a building next to the Mosque/Cordoba house, dedicated, of course, to "tolerance and understanding" and christen (yes, christen) it the Roncesvalles/Vienna/Lepanto House.

or perhaps he is a hypocritical jackass and should be mocked and made fun of.
In any case, since NYC routinely elects Democrats with 95% vote averages, even after 9-11, perhaps they deserve what they are getting.

I'm wondering how symbolic Bloomberg/Schumer/Weiner et al find allowing this mosque at ground zero. Is it meant to show that NY jews are more enlightened than Israeli jews and therefore should be less of a target? Is it appeasment or do they really want to "tolerate" radical islam? Do they grasp how tolerant islam is of judism? Richard Cohen just wrote a column defending the mosque. It seems like all the NY jews are competing with each other to like the islamists more.

That may happen in other countries, but we should never allow it to happen here."
What if it's not private citizens? What if the financing for this goes directly back to the government or government affiliated group in Saudi Arabia. What if this is a government-financed attempt to undermine the rule of law in this country, by introducing a Sharia embracing cultural center in New York City?
To quote Bill Murray: "It just doesn't matter!"

I'm wondering how symbolic Bloomberg/Schumer/Weiner et al find allowing this mosque at ground zero.
Let me try to make this point a little more bluntly: If Americans wake up to the fact that the Muslims have an agenda which results in the destruction of this country, then they might also wake up to the fact that the tribe of Bloomberg/Schumer/Weiner et al has its own agenda to destroy this country.
And that's why it's imperative that Bloomberg/Schumer/Weiner et al continue to do their dirty work behind the veil of multiculturalism.
The presence of Islam and all other manner of evil allows the Bolshevik-Phariseeical Nihilists to thrive behind the scenes [as the puppet masters, pulling all the strings of their various puppets, not the least of whom is Barry Soetoro Dunham].
If you start eliminating evils like Islam, then logical consistency would require that you also go after evils like Bolshevik-Phariseeical Nihilism.

Within Freedom of Religion, MUST be the Freedom to speak out AGAINST religions you find objectionable.
Islam is not "just" a religion... its a Political/Philisophical movement having discreet aims of Conquest.... but unlike Naziism or Communism, it had gained the protected status of being a Religion....
Until we recognize it for what it is... NOT JUST a Religion... we cannot fight it... and now are supposed to remain silent on it as well?

Posted by: sTevo at August 05, 2010 06:53 AM (JyVke)
They still have to deal with NYC construction workers, teamsters, longshoremen, stevedores, waste disposal, etc., etc. and the unions and the supply centers and all the rest that will be facing boycotts if they so much as lend a hammer to anyone involved on this project.
Then there are the career bureaucrats - the inspectors for plumbing, electrical, fire code, OSHA safety, you name it - as well as the snafus that can entangle paperwork for weeks and months.
But if they ever do get it built, I think they most of Greenwich Village - and (of course) Naked Singing Cowboy right out in front to welcome them all to the community - since it is a "community center" (snortle) and not a private property mosque, after all. (snort)
The Mayor may be willing to allow this poke in the eye, but your average Nuh Yawker WON'T.

Unfortunately, New Yorkers are the ones tolerating this crap. If public outcry was loud enough and involved enough people that this became a PR nightmare, it wouldn't happen. The rest of the country can see this mosque for the huge glob of spit in the eye of Lady Liberty that it is, but apparently being an "educated", enlightened New Yorker means you are unable to recognize the wolf in sheep's clothing. Just wait until those members of the "Religion of Peace" start going after the homosexual population. Then this level of tolerance won't look like such a good idea!
Freedom loving people everywhere ought to band together and bankroll a number of street vendors to park on every corner around the building and sell pork products. Hey, if we have to tolerate their crap they have to tolerate our pork!

You ask to show you bigotry. Well, when you write that "Americans have shown Muslims tolerance," that pretty well sums up the problem. There happen to be some Maericans who ARE Muslim. And when you imply that, because of their religion, they're somehow not American, that -- you guessed it -- bigotry.

i hope the mosque blares the call to prayer daily, 5-times, very loud and obnoxiously so as it can be heard for blocks upon blocks. every time reminding new yorkers just how weak willed and bought off they are. time to concentrate on better places and people, we have boat-loads of em.
new york...you suck, and nobody likes you.
Posted by: str8 outta at August 05, 2010 07:33 AM (m+HVS)
Let's do a scenario here (and I'll bet it will transpire)--the mosque is built, and after a short time, the true story of it's funding comes out. This causes a bit of stir, which dies down. Not long after, disturbing rumors surface about certain imams haranguing their flock and urging jihad. Once more, this is disregarded--just a radical, all religions have them you know.
And on some bright September day....

It's a political ideology with a an attendant mythology that Mohammed stole (and twisted) to give his political ideology instant legitimacy - just like that amazing joke that the desert rat could trace his lineage back thousands of years to Ishmael. It's funny, and sad, that anyone even accepts such obvious tripe. The arabs can't even keep accurate records of what happened 20 years ago, yet one is to believe that they understood their geneology for thousands of years as they wandered through the deserts with no writing or record-keeping abilities, at all.

The new tolerance is extreme tolerance. You must tolerate the most intolerant, revanchist, Jew and woman-hating, theocratic religion in the world today to prove you're not a theocrat, or something.
And I love how those who defend Islam and decry Islamophobia usually lead with a tu quoque argument insulting Judaism or Christianity. Which doesn't bother me. It's just hypocrisy and craven dhimmitude on parade.
The mere fact there exists an Organization of the Islamic Conference consisting of 57 member states enforcing sharia law to one degree or another proves, to all those but the most determined idiots, Islam isn't like the other post-Enlightenment religions.
But I'm used to these back-patting allegedly liberal people being objectively pro-theocratic fascism. They're damn proud of it.
Maybe in five years, like Hannity finally noticing sharia, people will notice the irrevocable nature of a land grant to Islam. Coming last in time of all the major religions, Islam is nothing if not tenacious when it comes to real estate.
Saudi Arabia is, after all, occupied Jewish land. I read it in the Quran and ahadith.

1) A mosque at ground zero is a sign of our tolerance—it's what makes America better than, say, Saudi Arabia.
2) "and dont hand us the sad-story about it being 'personal'"
Actually, it's true. if i lost a friend on 9/11 and you didn't, it probably means a lot more to me than it does to you.
3) "go clean up your ghettos"
Not sure if you've been to NY lately. It is the lowest crime city in America. Manhattan is largely ghetto-free, do to the unfortunately high cost of living here. Find me a "ghetto" in Manhattan.

---BWAHAHAHAHAHA youre just SO enlightened! get off of your self righteous pedastal, you dont hug the bully after he steals your lunch money you idiot.

---omg dude we know, we know about the losses of new yorkers, we really really really do. weve seen it a zillion times since. weve seen the documentaries, the other documentaries, the books, the magazines, the videos, the tributes...we cried right along with you. only difference is, the rest of us toughened up, new yorkers keep crying about it. STFU already.

For most Americans, any attack any where on American soil may as well have happened in our own backyard.
How can you be upset about dececrating the sacred ground of 9/11 and be so anti-NY at the same time?
Ground Zero is just as sacred as Pearl Harbor, and there would be the same uproar if the Japanese wanted to build a shrine to their people who died on 7 DEC 1941 as a big fat "FUCK YOU!" to America.
The reason NYFC can get fucked is because you people are too self-absorbed, too PC, and too uninformed to realize that this muslim shit house is EXACTLY THE SAME THING!! Read a fucking history book. The largest mosques are built at the sites of pisslam's greatest victories. And this is gonna be a 13 story shit house.
Ny firefighters and first responders were heroes.
I know that. Tell ya what, Sparky, why don't you go down to the Firehouse that lost almost everybody that day and tell them how proud you are of your support of this obscenity then get back to me with the number of teeth you have left.

Hello! It seems many people forget who suffered. 9/11 was not just NYC. Have you all forgoten? Let me see. Hmmm. Was DC attacked? How many people died at Shanksville? There were plenty of non-new yorkers killed that day! They were abourd those planes! Wake the hell up!!

---- oh christ, dont ask him that one, he'll inevitably come back with the whole "I KNOW ALL THE FIREFIGHTERS WHO WERE THERE THAT DAY AND TRSUT ME, THEYRE VERY TOLERANT DUH HUH HUH HURRRRR"
just wait and see.

P.S.
The Cordoba House will be a da'wa center of conversion to Islam.
Apostasy is still punishable by death in Islam.
So people like bill are defending the freedom of a religion which punishes freedom of religion as a capital crime.

Perhaps that would mean more if you hadn't been foaming at the mouth for the last hour with SERIUZ UPPER KASE BIZNESS, trying to get the remaining sand out of your itchy vagina.
Yeah, I'm dizzy alright.

The issue is not their right to practice their religion. It's their use of a location that has specific cultural and political significance. We already know we are better than Saudi Arabia. So did the terrorists when they crashed airplanes into the WTC, the Pentagon and the White House lawn.

Typical lib with sand in their vagina, back 'em up against the wall with facts, and the attacks start.
Don't hurt my feelings one bit if you want to show how "enlightened you are by allowing a jihadi recruitment and training center in your midst. And have fun listening to that 5X a day caterwauling.
But next time something goes BOOM!! and fucking 'slims all over the world are dancing in the streets again, don't come crying to me, 'cause as far as NYFC is concerned, I'm all out of Give A Fuck.

The number 13 having Satanic connotations in Christianity. (Betrayal.) While Cordoba was the capital of the Caliphate. This building will be pure evil.

The NYC fire department gets PAID. It is a JOB. We in fly-over country VOLUNTEER. We don't get paid 1c. We do it to protect people. We don't get paid for training. We don't get paid for working to make money to run the firehouse. We don't have health insurance from the fire company, nor life insurance. It is just as dangerous. Each community supports each other. But I guess we don't have brave men in fly-over land.

There's plenty of subsidized housing in NYC. In fact, it's written into the law. And murders have shot up 22 percent over the same period last year. The number of rapes is up more than 11 percent. Felony assault is also up about 6 percent. Bill Groupe, you're a fucking tool. Go suck a dick.

yeah im unhinged, you got me let me *eye roll* there for ya.
dont try the work-around with the whole "the law is the law" crap, it's just another pathetic excuse in order for good-at-nothing new yorkers to once again back down. maybe this is the time for that law to be 'challenged' doncha think? but that would require new yorkers to actually stand-up and maybe oh i dont know, protest a little? i mean gosh, so many 'tough guys' up there protested the war til their mouths were dry, why not now?
new york is a worthless piece of shit state, much the same as california, if we can bash and laugh about the bizarro-land on the west coast, we can laugh and bash its twin over here on the east coast.

If Weiner and Schumer aren't talking then there is a big problem.
But thanks for putting their names together. Now I'll spend the rest of the day deciding which one I find more cringe worthy.
