55 1) Regarding the tax cuts: I know that the GOP is being principled in wanting them all enacted, but I heard one commenter speculate that they could raise the bar on the wealth threshold to something like $1.5 million/year.  This would mean that it would not effect small business and it would only effect the truly rich -- who vote Democrat anyway.  Personally, I'm all for a progressive tax on legal fees.

Ultimately, I don't worry about this one.  If they let the cuts expire, they'll have angry people in April 2012.  I think Obama wants a fig leaf here.  He doesn't care about the revenue or anything else, he just wants to appear as the defender of those filthy, stinkin' working class folk.

2) Unemployment: Politically, this is a nonentity.  As long as they don't extend them for more than 2 months, it will be long forgotten.  But ultimately, if you don't have a job, you have to stop thinking that one at the same salary is coming along.  This is why a lot of white-collar people don't work temporarily at McDonalds (or another stopgap).  If they were shown to have settled for a lower salary, they'll never get the old one again, no matter how the economy rebounds.

In any case, everyone will forget by January.

3) Something like this will probably happen and I don't really see this as Lame Duck Shenanigans.  I don't think anything will happen now that would be different than in 2012.  I'd think the GOP would want to keep reimbursements up, as the opposite would hasten the call for Obamacare.

4) They won't get an Omnibus bill through.  What I'm afraid of, is that they'll use the expiration of the continuing resolution as a bargaining chip for other things.  We don't want the government to shut down over Christmas, now do we?
