Who commented with that WWI or maybe II quote the other day, something about how the Brit and French troops sang, while the US troops killed everything, including the trees in dead quiet.  That pretty much sums it up.  America.  We kill everything, including the bunnies and trees.

(CBS News) Two days after his top adviser insisted otherwise, Mitt Romney on Wednesday told CBS News chief political correspondent Jan Crawford that President Obama's individual mandate - upheld last week by the Supreme Court - is "a tax."

"The Supreme Court has spoken, and while I agreed with the dissent, that's taken over by the fact that the majority of the court said it's a tax, and therefore it is a tax. They have spoken. There's no way around that."

"I said that I agreed with the dissent, and the dissent made it very clear that they felt it was unconstitutional," Romney continued. "But the dissent lost - it's in the minority."

Dear General Washington.

We're sorry, but your upcoming attack on Christmas is not authorized under the current Rules of Engagement.

You did not ask the home country for permission for this night attack.

You are attacking an area where there are civilians.

And you are showing cultural insensitivity by attacking on a day Holy to the opposition.

We are also informed that you do not have enough Women or Minorities in the Ranks, and therefore must question your adhearance to the Primary Mission, of Multicultualism.

Sincerely, American High Command

88 Prior to 1654, there was no slavery in North America. Africans who were there were either indentured servants or free.

That's 34 years. What happened? What happened was the story of Anthony Johnson, an Angolan man who was an indentured servant.

Anthony Johnson was freed of his indenture in 1635, married and was by all accounts a successful farmer.

Johnson was so successful that he could afford an indentured servant of his own. Like Johnson, his name was changed: John Casor.

Casor worked for Johnson for a time, then asking for his freedom so that he could work for a white farmer. Casor was also African.

Anthony Johnson took John Casor to court to keep him permanently. He argued that English courts could not prevent this.

Johnson's argument was that the English could not tell a black man that he could not own slaves: slavery was part of his culture.

Yes, , slavery was started by a black man who won a court case based on an argument of multiculturalism.

123 I went to post on that Twitchy/Chris Rock thread but it's closed, so I'll post it here.
One guy talked about the nasty past and present of the Democrat party, but he said something that has always stuck under my craw: that white men made black men free.  Here is my response:

A gentle correction: God made us *all* free. When the Founding Fathers created this country on that Truth, they built the basis on which all men--and women--would be free. A slave populace in a country which does not have that foundation is subject to the whim of the majority (see: the Democrats of old and not-so-old, as you spelled out). I am grateful that our Founders listened to God, but not all of their progeny did. Else there would have been no Civil War, nor the 100 years that black Americans existed in a quasi-citizenship.

However, in the Civil Rights Era, America again turned to her Foundation--God and his gift of Freedom. But, conversely, we *all* turned away from Him at nearly the same point in time.

Now the question remains: will we turn to our Rock and Foundation again in sufficient numbers? If we do not, I, like many others, fear that the New Slavery will be far worse than the old version. And, for certain, it will be color-blind.

Happy Independence Day and God bless.

TU and FUBAR are both good adages....both useful.

But they differ, in that, TU is usually used to describe a fatal situation...while FUBAR, though it is an extremely unfortunate condition, is not necessarily a fatal one.

Something, or someone, can be FUBAR without being TU.

.....As in....still have a pulse.

Something, or someone, can be TU without being FUBAR.

.....As in....still recognizable.

So, while our beloved country is quickly reaching FUBAR levels....we still have a little time left, to rescue it before it becomes TU.

(I'm not counting Eisenhower; he was raised Jehovah's Witness, but he never believed in any of it and formally converted to Presbyterianism in office.)

The closest President to Obama appears to be Lincoln. Lip service to Christianity, Deist sympathies, and a trust in the Federal Government as closest on Earth to holiness.

156 I read somewhere (I think it was South Carolina A History) where the first African slaves in the colonies were a group dropped off by a Spanish ship which was running low on supplies. They simply dropped them on the beach in SC and took off.

Of course the Caribbean islands were already using massive amounts of slave labor, mostly Africans to grow sugar cane.

But slavery in this era was the normal state of things all over the world. You can not measure the people and what went on then by today's standards.

180 Chris Rock did a bit once about Black people complaining that White people were rich. It went like this as I remember: Couple of Black folks are in a store looking at prices, they show the clerk something and ask if they have anything cheaper. The clerk says no, sorry and they leave. White guy walks up and asks how much is this or that. The clerk looks around....sees there are no Black folks in the store....and says,"Well it's free of course. Everything here is free for White people." He said this goes on everyday, everywhere but Black folks have never caught on. Pretty funny. Other than that. I can't think of anything I ever heard from him that made me laugh. He always seemed like someone who could be funny but has too much of an axe to grind. A very dull axe. Richard Pryor was the funniest man I ever heard in my life. I want one of these fucking Black Activists to notice that my ancestors, my family went to war against each other and killed each other for years to help stop slavery. This makes me a racist? Fuck that.

The Spaniards brought slavery to these shores.

182 175 Here is what Wiki says and it sounds about what I remember from the history book:

The first enslaved Africans arrived in what is now the United States as part of the San Miguel de Gualdape colony (most likely located in the Winyah Bay area of present-day South Carolina), founded by Spanish explorer Lucas Vásquez de Ayllón in 1526.

Yeah but were those slaves in the sense of what we consider to be indentured servants that would eventually be freed, which tended to be the standard practice of Europe at that time, or were the what we usually think of as slavery in America which is permanent slavery for them and their descendants.

189 One other ting to keep in mind about that era, black Africans were certainly not the only ones being enslaved.  European whites were also being hit by the Moors in N. Africa and the Muslims in the Middle East.

Indians kept slaves as a matter of routine as well and were kept as slaves by the colonials as well in the early days.

And as my last word on this subject, Chris Rock can kiss my ass. If he doesn't like the USA he and those scrunt Dixie Chicks can pack their bags and head to Europe while it still lasts.

197 That says the practice of Importing Africans. Not slaves. His point is that prior to 1654 they were treated as indentured servants that would eventually become free men vs. what we now consider to be slaves in the US.

And plenty of Europeans came as indentured servants.  Their contracts were more ironclad, of course, but they did work for one particular contract holder for a fixed length of time.

Not those slaves.  They were intended to be permanent slaves.  As far as I have seen the Spanish did not do indentured servants. Those slave did escape into the woods and joined up with the indians though.

The Spanish were hard, cruel taskmasters to anyone they ruled be it natives, Africans, and their own citizens and serfs.  That is part of the reason South and Central America has always been so screwed up.

218 In the West slavery is now much more subtle. No one in the Democrat Party owns a Black American, but if 95+% of Black Americans do whatever the Democrat Party wants them to do, what difference does it make? Few of us would ever want to trap people in lives of misery and despair, but we are all forced to support a system that does just that. Our rulers have learned that if they lie to us in just the right way we will let them rape us. So they do.

227 If Obama is not a Christian, then there were at least these five non-Christian Presidents as well: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Millard Fillmore, and William Taft. They were Unitarians.

Unitarians are not the same as today's Unitarian-Universalists.  Unitarians rejected the trinity but not much else.  Whatever Jefferson aligned himself with in one sense or another, he was certainly not a Christian.

And I don't understand what the big deal is that Obama's not a Christian.  So what?  Certainly if one is orthodox, one can determine who is one's compatriots and who is not.  I think it's entirely reasonable for people to conclude that (a) Wright's church is not Christian and (b) Obama's a liar and is simply a secular progressive.

What about Nixon, the Quaker?

The closest President to Obama appears to be Lincoln. Lip service to Christianity, Deist sympathies, and a trust in the Federal Government as closest on Earth to holiness

Lincoln's rhetoric -- analogies and phrasing -- was dripping with the Bible.  He was enmeshed in a sort of generic western Protestantism.  It wasn't just "lip service".

Yep, blacks were slaves to everybody, including free blacks. A significant portion of the free black and creole population were slave owners, I believe, and a few even traded slaves.

A decade or so ago there was a big fight among the Cherokee about whether the descendents  of Cherokee-owned slaves should be counted as members of the Cherokee nation today for casino money purposes, At the time they were not considered Cherokee, and there was quite bitter resistance to the idea that they should be. I don't remember what the eventual decision was.

254 Slavery was a normal part of the human condition from time immemorial. It probably began in the Stone Age when a stronger caveman threatened a weaker one with violence unless he did his bidding. In one form or another, it has existed across all times, races, and cultures. It was Western Civilization, and more specifically, Great Britain and the United States who put an end to it in the 19th Century. And it was the socialists, communists, and fascists who brought it right fucking back in the 20th Century, bigger and bolder than ever and on a massive scale. As baldilocks said, today's version of slavery truly is color-blind.

256 A decade or so ago there was a big fight among the Cherokee about whether the descendents of Cherokee-owned slaves should be counted as members of the Cherokee nation today for casino money purposes, At the time they were not considered Cherokee, and there was quite bitter resistance to the idea that they should be. It appears that slavery isn't confined to any particular race, creed, or nationality,  but is a decidedly human failing.

It also appears safe to say that we've "progressed" from control of the body to control of the mind as today's   form of it.

The ancient Romans were color-blind about slavery, too.

They took slaves in all the lands that they conquered.

Greek slaves were highly prized....and were used as teachers, accountants and political consultants.

Celtic slaves were valued in brothels.

Nubian slaves were considered a fashion statement....and were often placed at the doorway to a Roman household, as a decorative element of wealth.

Russian slaves were often put into the military....because of their fighting prowess.

Having lived in Saudi, we would see a lot of this first hand, although it was the dirty little secret we couldn't talk about. The Sudanese, Ethiopians, Eritreans and Somalis were a special kind of underclass in The Kingdom, different from the Filipinos, Malaysians and Bangladeshis. They were treated brutally, and if it wasn't technically slavery, it was certainly de facto. If you don't have control of your passport in a foreign country, and can't leave when you want to, you are not free. All the little fools who think Islam is great, and the West and Christians are abject horrors, need to visit Riyadh at chop chop square. They should have the scales removed from their eyes then.

Arab muslims were slave brokers who bought slaves from villages in the interior and force marched them to the ports of West Africa and sold them to western slave ships.

From my understanding of history, the path to colonial era slavery was capture and imprisonment by an enemy tribe, imprisonment by your own tribe, sale by tribal leaders to Arab slave traders. Then a force march to West African ports and auction to American, French, Spanish, British, and Portugese slave shippers. Journey in chains to Caribbean, Latin American, or American ports. Sale of slave lots to brokerages. Sale to plantations and other buyers wanting labor

By the 19th century, the purchase of African born slaves in America was almost gone, as births supplied all they needed at none of the cost or assimilation problems, and Britain had outlawed the commerce of slaves over the high seas and the Royal Navy enforced it vigorously, especially on America bound ships

308 203- Actually, the Spanish were not especially nasty. They were significantly better than the Dutch, Portuguese, or French, mainly because the Spanish monarchs at least pretended to listen to protesters and critics. And they certainly compare well to Asian and African conquerors, not to mention such groups as the Aztecs. The main reason that Latin America is poorly governed in comparison to the US and Canada is not because Iberians were so mean and awful. It's because N America was fortunate enough to inherit British institutions, traditions, and law. When it comes to politics, the Brits have been truly exceptional in their genius. As the Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa has said, the tragedy of Latin America is that it took its "liberal" inspiration from the French Revolution rather than from the Anglo-American one.
