Happy Star Wars Day!
— Jack M.

May the Fourth be with you!

And, if my calendar is to be believed, tomorrow will feature the Return of the Fifth.

But that's in the future. And, like any good conservative blogger, I want to talk about the past.

Specifically, yesterday.

If you knew me, and you don't, you would know two things about me: I hate the Phillies and I love Tazers.

So what happens when I get to combine the two subjects? YouTube heaven.

The force was strong with that police officer. I haven't seen a padawan go down that fast since Nathan Lane auditioned for the part of "Hand Solo" in the off-off-Broadway adaptation.

(Don't you wish you were one of my twitter followers now? This is the kind of primo stuff you are missing.)

Heh.  GOP sells Crist painting on ebay.

★Canvas is naturally sensitive to changes of temperature and humidity, just as the Charlie Crist’s political convictions are subject to fluctuations in poll numbers.

★Depending upon variety of conditions, the stretch canvas may periodically lose and regain tautness, much like Charlie Crist periodically loosens or regains positions on a variety of issues.

★Ornate gold frame made of manufactured wood, similar to the fabricated conservative values of the politician depicted within.

Posted by: The War Between the Undead States at May 04, 2010 10:14 AM (udLJM)

31 tasers are being used far too often by Law Enforcement. They're KILLING people and that's not what non-deadly force is supposed to be about.

Taser companies should be held accountable and made to come up with solutions. So far all they have to say is "What Us Worry" or "Taser am Safe (my boss told me so)".

The number of deaths and severe injuries, if sustained by a child or an illegal immigrant crossing our border, would raise alarums from here to the U.N. about the threat to world peace an stuff. Some wacky old person off their meds or some miscreant moron gets a wakeup call from DEATH and it's no big deal. Plus cops are using them far too often and when they're really not warranted. The cops are just getting lazy and the procedural boards ALWAYS clear them which only increases the use.

Of course the alternative IS worse but only just, at the rate these things are juicing people for just being idiots. I don't think that being an Idiot deserves the DEATH penalty.

The "kid" wasn't 5 years old and it's not the parents fault he ran on the field, but nice try to blame his idiocy on someone else. By being where he wasn't supposed to be he posed a threat, period. Who knows what the cop thought. I would have thought, fuck this kid he's going down right now.

When dropping someone becomes as easy as pushing a button, human nature dictates that people will abuse that power in situations that formerly wouldn't have justified it.  By "fascist" I mean the disproportionate use of legally sanctioned physical force.  more of a practical epithet instead of a political one here.

The  more we get used to security using tasers, the more likely those tasers are going to be used on the wrong people (i.e. you and me) for the wrong reasons.

Again, the jerk got what he deserved, but got it in a way that illustrates teh broader societal problems we are experiencing right now

Policing (even private security) is a risky occupation.  That's why a high school educated person can make 6 figures.

As for Philly players, they should all be tied to steel poles and left on the highest hill in PA during a severe thunderstorm. Let God sort it out.

Actually, I think tasing was the best thing for him. And hobos. And street-mimes. And white hipsters with dreadlocks. And screaming toddlers in restaurants. And people who yak at each other or on their phones during movies. And old people who want to pay for everything with change and out-of-date coupons. And people who use public toilets and don't flush.

As payback for random annoyances and rudeness, tasers would be perfect. Mace is good too, but has area-of-effect problems that tasers don't.

Phillies fans are no way as bad as the national press makes us to be.

Iggles fans are another story entirely. And the kid was out on the field to get the crowd pumped, that's all. Were the ballplayers running back to their dugouts in abject terror? Christ almighty it wasn't like the kid was trying to blow up Times Square or something.

If Ty Cobb had been on the field, he would simply have beaten the pulp out of the grinning dumbass. Cobb was such a hard-ass he once beat up a cripple in the stands; some snot-nose teenager wouldn't have a chance against the Georgia Peach. (He basically dared Walter Johnson to throw at him, knowing that Johnson was leery of hitting batters. Johnson never took the bait, and Cobb lit him up like a pinball machine more often than not.)

They should have just had a Kum By Yah, extended hand  meeting with the kid.  They should have approached him in an open, transparent, non-threatening manner and asked him what the motivating factors were behind his behavior.  He probably grew up in poverty, disenfranchised and uneducated.  These factors would understandably result in a festering deep seated hatred of America and her freedoms (baseball is the iconic American sport).  They should have negotiated with him to leave the field in a peaceful manner, perhaps offering him season tickets, a meet and greet with the players, a stadium tour, some private sessions with the Phillie Phanatic, and some limited edition Phillies memorabilia.  I think that would have been a lot more effective than a closed fist around a taser.

boo fucking hoo.  Then they should get a new job and/or train cops with good judgment.  I'm sick of seeing stories about people getting killed by tasers when they're naked and they are walking away.  I don;t give a fuck how hopped up on PCP they are, unless they are a physical threat, they shouldn't get tased.

We had a sad story here in the Seattle area about 10 years ago.  Naked black man running in traffic in suburb east of Seattle, banging on cars and yelling at people.  Sherrif's deputy answered the call.  (We had just had an incident where a white off cuty cop had killed a black man who was trespassing and who the cop thought was reaching for a gun a few weeks previous which resulted in huge racial tensions and great public outcry).  The white deputy was the lone responder.  He tried to tase the out of control black man who was high on PCP and other stuff (he'd been smoking "sherms" previously).  The taser didn't do squat.  Unarmed black dude became armed black dude when he tackled said deputy and grabbed his gun.  White deputy, father of small child was fatally wounded.

Monty, I've known more mediocre and bad cops than not, and I don't want them having an easy out to juice up whoever they want to  because someone's "resisting."  But that's not the point.

The point is that tasers carry a real danger (if rare), and getting scuffed up by running down a goofy fan who's waving around a shirt ("his intentions weren't clear," yeah right, give me a break) and who passed through a metal detector like everyone else is just piss poor judgment.  Not unlike sending the SWAT team out on granny.

You guys think cops are your buddies?  Fine.  Maybe they even are.  But for the rest of us, when the 5-0 starts "obeying orders" it's not going to be pleasant.  I'd rather not have tasers being an acceptable first line of defense at that point.

That is a physical threat.  Again, it's all about judgment.  A lone cop should not have tried to take him down.

Brilliant?  Has that EVER happened?  Have players subdued streakers?  Are players really going to risk injury doing something that isn't their job?  It would be too easy to jam a finger or sprain an ankle (or worse) in the process.  Doing so would be far from incredibly brilliant.  In fact it would be fucking stupid.  Like you.  Fuck, managers don't even like players starting fights with other players.  If I was Charlie Manuel and one of my players tried such a stunt, I'd be so far up his ass he'd have to tiptoe past my wedding ring to take a shit.  As if having Chase Utley on the DL would be worth a few minutes of distraction in the Xth inning of one game.

Rick Monday Saved the Flag 30 Years Ago

By JOE RESNICKThe Associated Press
Saturday, April 22, 2006; 8:59 PM

LOS ANGELES -- Rick Monday never tires of answering questions about that memorable day 30 years ago, when he performed his own Patriot Act and unwittingly became an icon to millions of American war heroes and their loved ones.

Monday was playing center field for the Chicago Cubs on April 25, 1976, at Dodger Stadium when he noticed two protesters kneeling on the grass in left-center, intending to burn the American flag. He immediately bolted toward them and snatched it away.

I'm a Phillies Security Supervisor. I'm also a long-time poster, so I can verify that statement. Let me tell you a little about the job, if you care.

Philly deserves it's reputation for idiot fans. There simply is a larger segment in this town than in most other cities I've been (NYC excepted) who want to live up to the asshole sterotype. The funnies part is, 95 percent of the troublemakers are suburbanites from PA or Jersey, or college kids from outside the area altogether.

I've been doing the job for over 20 years now. It's a nice second job (we get paid much better than you'd think), it gets me out of the house for up to 10 days at a time, and frankly, I'm a baseball fan. I like meeting people from other cities and talking about the game. I'm not a power-tripping loser who picks on people because I had a bad day. Same thing with the city Police...we have some guys who are...we try to weed 'em out. I want 3 things...a fast game, a win, and no calls on the walkie-talkie.

As for the cop, I'm sort of in the "imminent danger only" camp.. They probably would have cornered the runner a few seconds later. BUT...and thankfully it was a non-lethal incident....I hope that the video deters other people from doing it, since the criminal charges and $3500 fine doesn't seem to be working.

He couldn't have been too pleased with Ryan Madson who broke his toe after a blown save in San Fran. He kicked a table, or a locker, or some frigging hard stationary object. Ryan: just work on your slider, hon - don't go beating up the furniture and putting yourself on the DL.

Posted by: kallisto at May 04, 2010 12:49 PM (+FkcS)

256 As a matter of policy for most departments, the Taser is one step up the force continuum from harsh language, not a "last resort before lethal force". Statistically, injuries to suspects are less frequent when a Taser is used than when using unarmed arrest control techniques. Any application of force is potentially lethal, and I would expect cops to use whatever tools are available to them to minimize the chances of injury to a suspect. When the choice is between hands on or a Taser, if the Taser will present the least risk to the suspect, that is the tool that should be used.

But we're all still Philly fans. Anyway you're probably gone, I just wanted to thank you. I knew this was not the doing of the Phils' staff like you, who are really good at their jobs. But you know, Philly cops? They are a mixed bag for sure. Plus there were like 8 guys out there! And they were about to have him! they didn't have to taze him. 260 You know, I kind of thing how one reacts to this illustrates whether you're a conservative or a right-winger. If you're okay with it, you're probably a right winger. You don't mind government power as long as it's doing what you think it should be doing. In this mindset, the problem with government power is not inherit, it is simply a question of who wields it. If you're uncomfortable with this, as well as the growing use of taser's in non-lethal situations, then you're more likely a conservative. You believe the strict monopoly of legitimate coercion needs to be seriously limited unless under extraordinary situations. My brother's a cop, and I don't think too many people work harder in more dangerous situations than our police officers, but by necessity we give them a lot of power. And a lot of power needs checks and balances. I just don't want cops tasing people because they don't want to give chase. I want cops chasing people because without the taser it would have to be the gun.

Giving chase, in this event, is a waste of time.  Eventually, Joggy McDouchebag is gonna get tired, someone (cop, player, ump, whoever) will catch him, and off the field he goes.

So, do we want this to take 10 minutes?  20?  40?  I don't know about you, but I go to a baseball game to watch baseball, not sit around while some shithead makes it on the evening news so he can brag to his shithead frat brothers.  How long should the rest of the world wait before using force is permissible to those of you uncomfortable with this incident?  Who decides?

If you break a law, you have chosen to accept that there will be consequences.  If you hop down onto the field, you *know* that you will be coming off that field in custody.  You *know* that, if you evade for long enough, you're gonna piss off the people chasing you.  You *know* that, if you piss them off sufficiently, they might not have the gentlest hands when they finally win.  And they're gonna win.  Because it's a fucking baseball field.  With 500,000 fucking lights.  And 100,000 fucking witnesses.  And 100 fucking cameras.

I have no sympathy for some idiot who decides that his need for attention is worth inconveniencing everyone else at the game.  Even if it is innocent, and he's not going to hurt someone.

The cop's job was to put an end to the incident.  Quickly, effectively, and with unquestioned authority.  Done.  The cop did not "escalate" this matter by pulling the tazer.  Joggy McDouchebag escalated the matter with each passing second, by continuing to evade authorities.

I am okay with all of this, because I am a law-abiding citizen who has ever-dwindling patience for people who feel that rules...set, standard, common-sense rules like "don't disrupt a fucking baseball game"...don't apply to them.

Grannies at a 9/12 rally do not deserve to get tazed.  Not because I agree with them ideologically, but because they are not breaking any rules.  They should, however, be able to stand up to scrutiny, such as proving they've filed whatever permits may be necessary for a demonstration, and maintain a peaceful assembly.  If they didn't have their paperwork, and when the cops asked them to leave, they started running around, evading authority, and becoming a general nuisance, then they have crossed a threshold, and now deserve "consequence" for their actions, whatever that may be.

You don't want consequence?  Don't do stupid shit.

264 I am consistently amazed that so many here are completely unable to distinguish the difference between sympathy for the jackass running around the field and giving cops carte blanche to decide when and where to use their tazers without more stringent guidelines. It has nothing to do with that moron. Are you really unable to see the bigger picture? Really? Do you think by widening the cop's discretion you're always going to agree with the choice they make in the future? I understand you "think" you're just good old fashion, common sense folks. But the reality is, you guys don't want smaller government. You want to be back in charge. Tazers are in lieu of lethal force, not working up a sweat. I have no sympathy for alleged small government types who don't know the difference.

265 well, Tommy, I agree with you for certain. Plus, they were about to apprehend the young man - he was surrounded by 8 officers at the time the one officer (who was probably ticked at being outrun and frankly, at being made to run at all) decided to taser him. It was completely unnecessary. I think you're right with your analysis. I hate to call myself a libertarian but I guess that's what I am. I'm getting a nasty vibe from all the people "oh he's a douche taze him." Yes he was a jackass! so what? he was a kid waving a tee shirt while running around like a spaz. The cops look the worse by far for their actions. I do hope the Phillies organization takes them to task for this.

4  Yes, that young man was certainly deserving of potentially lethal force.

Maybe not... but he and many others like him will  probably think twice about being an asshole at a ball game.
