A few things going on here;

1) The media believed that it was a righteous anger against Bush/conservatives/etc...so if they got hurt, well that was ok. Obama, being a secular messiah, would be a serious loss to the country.

2) Liberals deal with hate by projection. So if they wanted to hurt Bush, conservatives must want to hurt Obama. Only, liberals believe themselves to be civilized and conservatives barbarians - so the former can control themselves, the latter cannot. 

3) It is politically advantageous to be seen as the victim. So, if by pushing propaganda the media can make the mushy middle believe that racist reactionaries are a step away from going on a rampage against virtuous liberals, it helps the left at the polls.
