— Slublog How much does Obama's vacation cost?
Short answer - a lot.
Just consider these estimates on part of the costs of the latest Obama Hawaii trip:The guys at HillBuzz show just how unprecedented this vacation is, compared to where other recent presidents spent their Christmas vacations. Most presidents chose to spend Christmas either at the White House or at Camp David, which is 70 miles away from D.C. Obama's choice of vacation spot is about 4,800 miles from Washington and his decision forces security and other staff to miss Christmas with their families. Other recent presidents showed more consideration for the needs of those who work for them. The Obamas...have not.* Mrs. ObamaÂ’s early flight to Hawaii: $63,000 (White House Dossier)
* ObamaÂ’s round trip flight to Hawaii: $1 million (GAO estimates)
* Housing in beachfront homes for Secret Service and Seals in Kailua ($1,200 a day for 14 days): $16,800
* Costs for White House staff staying at Moana Hotel: $134,400 ($400 per day for 24 staff) – excluding meals and other room costs
* Police overtime: $250,000 (2009 costs reported by Honolulu Police Department)
* Ambulance: $10,000 (City Spokesperson)
TOTAL COST: $1,474,200
Their decision really should not be that surprising, since they haven't shown much consideration for how their vacations impact citizens in the past. Sure, millions of Americans may be out of work, and the economy is in the crapper, but this president won't allow such distractions to get in the way of his desire to spend time basking in the Hawaiian sun.
The worst aspect of this story? The same media that freaked out over a Republican president spending time at a ranch he owned free and clear are writing puff pieces about the current president's indulgences on our dime.
So, fellow wingnuts...how's the cake? Mine is a bit dry.

Cake, back in the day this term was used, meant the bread dough that fell to the bottom of the oven getting burnt rock hard over the course of the day.

All of Obama's (and Clinton's) life he's been very comfortable but always around people much richer than himself. Thomas Lifson talks about Obama's youth in Indonesia, where he would have been resentful of the children of American employees, whereas his stepdad wasn't paid all that much.
He returns to Hawaii to attend the fanciest of private schools.
He goes to private, exclusive Occidental.
He then goes to Columbia (and allegedly attends a class or two) with all of its Ivy pedigree.
I can't speak to his early community organizing but he left that quickly enough.
Harvard Law has all of the children of rich lawyers looking to be rich lawyers and it's just dripping with money.
He goes into politics and he has to hobnob with rich donors (not to mention Bill Ayers, the perfumed prince).
Now, he's trying to bum weekends in Italy from his rich "friends". He's always been resentful and bitter.

Seriously though, these kinds of posts fall under the "OD Disorder" category.
I disagree. This man is a poor steward of taxpayer money. He is a profligate spender in his personal life and in his job as President. He also gets no censure from the media who was obsessed with GWB's vacation schedule and how much money he spent. I recall the media going nuts before Jenna Bush got married as they speculated how she was going to have a huge State wedding while the economy was "in the toilet"--how could she justify that kind of spending? (This is back in the days of 6% unemployment, too). They had to eat crow as she had a simple wedding at her parents' home in Crawford TX. She didn't have some huge extravaganza like Chelsea Clinton did who also didn't come under any criticism and who's wedding was feted by the MFM.
He is completely insensitive to the plight of the average American, and there is absolutely no outcry from the media. It's disgusting. It has nothing to do with ODS.

Yes, which he has been doing from Hawaii. I guess the media can just cream all over themselves as they discuss in sad, hushed tones about how hard it is for the President who not only came to Paradise late, but also how it's been a working vacation. I'm sure they will pontificate on their panels that he is the hardest working president ever and how unprecedented it is that he is accomplishing so much while he is away. He's so effective and such a hard worker, he, Michelle, and the girls all deserve to go to somewhere nice to get away from it all after they get back to D.C. Perhaps Tahiti would be nice.

The Obama's had better find a way to make a buttload of money for after he's out of office, because these two aren't going to be able to go back to getting along without private jets and a huge entourage.
And that is why I am happy to announce that I have accepted the position of Secretary General of the UN. I think it would be really cool to see the furst family vacationing in half-brother George's cardboard box.
That will never happen. There will be a bunch of big glossy 12 X 20 photos of Obama embracing his brother outside the shack. The girls playing around the perimeter of the shack. Moochelle harvesting a giant yam grown from the sewage that runs right through the shack. But as soon as the camera crews leave, so do the Obamas.

Last night, Barack and Michelle Obama, Obama's sister and her husband and a half dozen friends dined at one of the President's favorite restaurants in Hawaii, Alan Wong's on King Street.
Born and raised in Hawaii, Obama has adventurous tastes, says Wong, and always orders the multicourse chef's menu. Michelle, who usually eats lighter, joined him last night. On the menu: A trio of appetizers: Wong's seafood cake, a tomato with li hing mui dressing and Wong's famous "soup and sandwich," a two-color Big Island tomato soup and foie gras grilled cheese sandwich. Lobster lasagna. Ginger-crusted onaga. The President's favorite entree, soy-braised shortribs. And his favorite dessert, "The Coconut," coconut ice cream covered with dark chocolate, in a shape that looks exactly like half a coconut, served with a colorful array of tropical fruits.
Ordinarily, I could give a rat's ass what the President and his family eat. When they are lecturing and hectoring me and regulating what I can eat, then I question their hypocrisy. Oh, and foie gras was temporarily banned in Chicago for 2 years until resteraunts fought it.Posted by: runningrn at December 30, 2010 09:21 PM (ihSHD)
Well, yes. I expect and am comfortable paying quite a bit for security for POTUS in general. It just didn't occur to me that whatever security we're using ran that high. FLOTUS cost $63k for her flight. That was more the number I was expecting to hear, and I have no complaints about a number like that for her flight (the "just because I wanted to leave early" part sure, the actual cost of it not so much). That sounds along the lines of "expensive private jet rate" or "Fill up AF1 with secret service and take off" type costs, which there's really no way to get around anyway. The rate for Barack's flight just dumbfounded me as to how you could even rack up that high of a cost in the first place. It's a "full on, ground all flights within 500 miles and send a jet escort with him the whole way" type cost. That just blew me away and made me wonder what SOP was for POTUS flying around, and if they did something abnormal this time that made it more expensive.

They think no one notices these things. I wonder if a GOP House is enough to make stories about the homeless return to the "news".
Ooh, that's a hard one to call since the Dems still have the Senate and Ogabe is the Precedent. I wonder how they'll cover the "Grandma is forced to eat Alpo and in order to pay for her prescription drugs" if the House tries to defund Obama care while Harry rules teh Senate and King Ogabe is on the throne.

Well, for starters, Honolulu is almost 4000 miles from D.C. Most of the presidents went on vacation at Camp David or to their own homes so they didn't travel as far. Bubba and Hillary did go to Hawaii once (that famous slow dance on the beach, Hill in one piece blue bathing suit--to no music).

I don't think they think about it for the most part, Eman. I think it's virtually a reflex action, almost animal. "Working memory overload" is a term of art and just a pet theory when applied here. (It's typically used to explain things like the Monty Hall problem.) But I thought of it watching Christ Christie dressing down one of those teachers. In one breath, it was all about the money money money. In the next breath, she was in it for the love. No awareness of the contradiction. With one set of thoughts, she was locked into one viewpoint; with another set, it was like she was another person (and that other person who was talking about money, well, she was just gone--never existed).
For some of them, yeah, they're deliberately duplicitous. For most, no. They can't hold the two points of view in their heads at once and reconcile them.

I used to take some solace in that. The problem is he has always outsourced that "infrastructure" work to someone else. Obama himself is a lazy-assed slacker voting present on contentious issues that might really display just how Progressive (Marxist) he is. He's done it his whole life. He politics off a teleprompter someone else's rhetoric. When done he plays golf, basketball, and whatnot while cooling down with a burger, fries, and ice cream. Meanwhile, the Valerie Jarretts, David Axelrods, David Plouffes, Rahm Emmanuels, Nancy Pelosis, and Harry Reids do all the dirty work of actual legislation, astroturfing, and advising for czars.
Barack Antoinette remains the vessel he always was only now he and Michelle run a bottomless tab.
Obama does damage to everything he touches. And to what others do on his behalf.

I also seem to recall reading that Bo wasn't quarantined or was let in without having completed all his rabies shots or the like--kind of the reverse of the Yes, Prime Minister where the French are trying to screw the British over language precedence in the Chunnel trains by giving a Trojan Horse gift of a dog to H.M. the Queen knowing that British law demands a long quarantine time (Britain is rabies free and intends staying that way) with the French hoping to manufacture a diplomatic incident over "rejecting" the French dog to gain French-first on signs in all the trains as a concession for the insult of not allowing the gift dog in immediately.

Which means that you were at that school by the grace of someone else's charity: hence that chip on your shoulder. And since you're first thought about me ran to "orphan," that's what I'd say you are.
Here's mine:
All right... by the crease in your pants, you went to Harvard or wherever. Naturally you think human beings dress like that. But you wear it with such disdain, my guess is you didn't come from money, and your school friends never let you forget it. Which means that you were at that school by the grace of someone else's charity: hence that chip on your shoulder. And since you're first thought about me ran to "fatherless," that's what I'd say you are.
Damn.
However, would it surprise you at all if Obama were to one day burst out with something like this?
The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

But he "fights" for us!

I'd be happy if he'd follow through with his shrew wife's "promise" that he would 'make us work.' So far, I see no signs that he has any interest in helping anyone work.

It's always good to hear from the dead-enders.

I feel sorry for all the security people. Obama insists on borrowing a house with a beach view. So all the Secret Service and SEALs are having ulcers thinking about a lone nutjob paddling a rubber boat ashore to take a stab at being famous. Plus being dragged almost 5,000 miles from home during holiday season, while Obama has his family there they do not. Meanwhile PACFLT probably has an ABM configured Aegis cruiser on alert in case North Korea takes another stab at launching another missile at Hawai'i.
But that is all Obama thinks about is what is good for him. Never about how his actings impact anyone else.

So Obama has banned cameras on the beach and the media reports that there can be no more pictures of him with his shirt off.
Then I realized that the reason there can be no beach pictures is because there must be no pictures of Michelle in a swimsuit, lest we realize that our inspiration for healthy living is indeed in fact morbidly obese. How inspiring could THAT be???
SOOOO tiring to try to stay on top of people like that...

So yeah, its real expensive for any POTUS to travel. I thought is was telling that the previous presidents spent Christmas in or near DC for the staff's benefit, but not this current one.

I bet you money that this vacation costs a lot more than $1.5 million. The Obamas are sooo ghetto. They are like f-ing Welfare Queens living large on the taxpayer dime. I hate them both.
Color me pissed.
