HBO Releases Game of Thrones Featurette

I admit, I'm hoping it turns out good. As much as I despise the way Martin is dragging out this story, the first novel was exceptional. HBO has slowly been releasing info on the miniseries, including some exceptional teaser videos you can see over at the website.

HBO just put up this 10-minute "behind the scenes" feature that has lots of stuff from the first few episodes:

4 Oh come on. You know Martin has just given up on the story. It seems like he has just enough integrity to not publish some crap as the last few entries like David Eddings did, but not enough integrity to just man up and say he's out.

5 I gave up after A Storm of Swords. Really, he could have wrapped this up in two books -- three tops. Instead it just goes on and on.

8 Assuming the ratings are as good as HBO seems to think they'll be, the show will be on season 5 before Martin gets book 5 out.

14 Weird as I just started reading it after searching amazon for recommedations. I'd never heard of Martin until about a month ago. I'm reading the second one now and am hoping little Joffrey gets a pike shoved up his ass along with his mother. It's giving Raymond Fiest's Riftwar saga a run for it's money so far. I'm engrossed. Wish I had HBO. Hell, I wish I had a tv. Guess I'll have to watch it on the iPhone.

15 Noooo!!! I love this series; I've read it since it first came out and Tyrion Lannister is my favorite character for ages. I really hope the HBO series doesn't wreck it for me, but I'm not hopeful. Will watch it through double facepalms, and only for a few minutes.

Maybe that's why the books petered out. With most of the interesting/sympathetic characters gone even the author might lose interest.

19 I had envisioned Tyrion Lannister as just like George R. R. Martin looked in that featurette. Was surprised when the actor playing Tyrion was rolled out and the author was not Tyrion.

21 I'm pretty sure I read all the books, but at this point I've lost interest, and don't really remember if I finished the 4th. Just finish it already. Have Darth Vader become Darth Vader because his wife dies in childbirth, or Indy fighting space aliens, or letting some of the people not have to stay batteries, or whatever. Just be done, please.

23 Jesus alot of George Martin hate here. Love the books, fuck Robert Jordan and David Endings, or should I say David Never endings. Also RA salvatore sucks a fat cock. George Martin is a fat lefty fuck, but he does write good shit. I have email chains with the guy he is just busy as shit and has a fat case of writers block. I think by writers block he means he wants his fans to watch his series before he knows how it ends.

27 Je-sus, what's with the Martin hate? Oh fuck it, I hate him too. I hate him for making me love these books and then leaving me high and dry without a happy ending. How dare he?! Every time I see his fat, hairy face talking smugly about how HBO achieved his vision I just want to chain him to a typewriter and torture him til he finishes the stupid thing. I'll watch the show and I know HBO will do a great job but I'm still pissed at him.

30 winewife, did you ever read Jordan's Wheel iof Time. and also, RR Martin's first books were good. They declined in quality in my opinion later on. I wonder if that is because he was attempting to stretch out the series.

31 I tried reading Wheel of Time, I think I got to book 4 or 5. They just moved so slow that I finally gave up. I didn't really get attached to the characters, I think. But I LOVED the Martin series. Tyrion Lannister is one of the most interesting character I've ever read. And the books were great til the 4th. I was expecting him the start bringing the characters and the storyline back around and heading toward an ending 2 or 3 books later. But instead he introduced all these new people and the loose ends just got looser! I'd sort of given up on the series til I found out about this HBO thing. And now I'm just mad at him.

32 It's a shame I can no longer recommend this series to friends, because the first three books were fantastic. The fourth one sucked so badly, however, that I can't subject anybody else to the same let-down and subsequent lingering depression.

36 It is rare that a popular series follows the books these days. For example: Dexter or True Blood. So, for all of you who are complaining about the books, I'm sure it will be tweeked to be more entertaining. It's not due to air until March. Showtime has the Borgias but no debut date. No word on Breaking Bad or Justified.

37 Martin's biggest issue is he was was planning on doing a 3-5 year jump in the timeline while things played out. Then he realized he was going to have to explain what had been going on. After all who is going to be happy with that? I also expect that the next couple of books will come out closer together since he's had the events sketched out for some time, and that the series helps to focus him on the overall narrative flow.

That'd be nice. This series, much as I love it, has really made me appreciate how efficient Tolkein was.
