— LauraW President Wonnerful wags his scornful finger at us yet again.
This time saying that Americans do not spend enough time outdoors (his economic policies will soon be correcting that problem) and that children should be doing fun stuff like hunting and fishing.
President Obama stated in a Presidential Memorandum last month:
the Federal government...has a responsibility to... [r]econnect Americans, especially children, to America's rivers and waterways, landscapes of national significance, ranches, farms and forests, great parks, and coasts and beaches.
The above quote has two ellipses, but, difficult as it may be to believe, I did not distort his words. He truly believes that the Federal Government needs to solve this problem, which he defines further in the Memorandum:
Children, especially, are spending less time outside running and playing, fishing and hunting, and connecting to the outdoors just down the street or outside of town.
Children aren't hunting enough? It must have hurt to pander to those bitter clingers.
Naturally the solution is the creation of yet another government program. I guess to make sure that your kids get out to the National Parks a few times a year or fulfill their squirrel quota or something.
It's vitally important to this President that your children, who you are not raising correctly (he can tell because he looks at statistics on National Park usage) get outside more and commune with 'Nature.'
Because he knows you assholes won't do it.
It has to be difficult to be Barack Obama. Every day he looks in the mirror and says, "Damn, I have to do EVERYTHING around here!" with a big exasperated grin.

Thanks to Andy.

You know, I every time I start thinking I have heard every stupid thing that these idiots in the White House can possibly say, they go and say something stupider. These guys, and especially Obama, really do live in an alternative universe.
I say "these guys" because I am really starting to think that Glen Beck is right about "Progressives".

OTOH, Barack and Michelle would prefer it if we all had to kowtow when entering the divine presence. Perhaps that's what all the bowing is about. He is trying to suggest to us that this is appropriate, except, you know, deeper for him. Tugging the forelock would be good too. Perhaps if we brought him some of the game we killed whilst communing with nature?

I'm a good conservative who believes in small government, but I'm concerned about the children, and government should step in.
After all, the Federal government has a responsibility to reconnect Americans, especially children, to America's rivers and waterways, landscapes of national significance, ranches, farms and forests, great parks, and coasts and beaches.

I remember that rumor in March that the Obama Administration was going to try to ban sport fishing. Dunno if that's going to go anywhere, but I still got my fishing license out of spite. Suck it, hippies! BTW, shouldn't the animal rights and Gaia-worshiping (BIRM) groups be up in arms about this statement? I mean, supporting red-state activities by empathizing fish and hunting. A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have. And a government that sends you outdoors to play isn't a government at all; it's "Mommy". And Mommy shouldn't have her own mint and nuclear weapons. At least, that's what Daddy says.

Contrast this with Sarah Palin who was a point guard for the championship state women's basketball team, a pageant contestant, a young mother who had to pay her own way through multiple schools and who worked her way up in politics until she became the first female VP nominee of the Republican party -- that's inspirational. That's true grit.
She is a lover of the outdoors. She hunts her own food. She shares power with her husband in a very modern relationship. She has a large, rowdy and lovable family, despite their problems which most Americans can wholly relate to. Obama envies this so much. His supporters were upset that Sarah Palin got the cover of the US Weekend Mother's Day issue.
Palin makes no apologies for the impact her frenetic lifestyle and fame has had on her children. “They’re quite independent, and they’re thick-skinned,” she says proudly. “Those are some attributes that any parent would want for their kids.
“We can see the blessings in every step that we’ve taken and in everything that has happened to us. There’s a been a tradeoff [but] Todd and I are strong believers at the end of the day things do work out for good.”
Speaking of day’s end, it’s still Piper’s birthday. For her real party the next day, Track’s girlfriend will teach her and her friends a dance. Plus, Palin says hopefully: “Her older cousin, who’s a little hunter, could teach the girls how to target-practice with the BB gun.”

Related, HA has a link to the new ad by the governor of Arizona, showing Barry smugly talking about the new immigration bill. The ad is devastatingly good. At the end, there is a message with the message: "Do your job". I think that is a great message for the entire campaign. You didn't do your job, so your services are no longer required." Instead of closing the border, you were worrying about whether our kids were being raised properly by us.

WASHINGTON – The new health care law already is helping millions of people through tax breaks for small businesses and assistance for families with young adults, President Barack Obama said Saturday.
In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama promoted his top domestic priority, which passed Congress with no Republican votes and continues to stir strong emotions nationwide. He acknowledged that many provisions will not take effect for years. But he said others are doing some families good now.
Nothing has taken affect but millions are doing better as a result of it. Barry truly is a miracle worker. And of course no one in the MFM would even think of questioning Dear Leader on this.

You will get a personally signed thank you from Obama when you accomplish your fitness goals, which include not watching television (especially Fox News), walking 5 miles per day in your neighborhood (knocking on doors to promote Obama and his policies) and riding a bicycle 10 miles (in place to power your home, especially once Cap and Trade passes).

So you go there, walk around or jump in(not that I would do that in some of the rivers) or trespass on private property(I know places where you'd get shot for that)and then what? The problem with Obama is he really doesn't know that many Americans already spend time outdoors, either working or for leisure., And instead of getting suggestions from organizations like the Scouts or 4-H, he makes up some stupid government plan . econnect Americans, especially children, to America's rivers and waterways, landscapes of national significance, ranches, farms and forests, great parks, and coasts and beaches.

What's up? Just got back from the morning rounds of chores -- our mare is due to foal at anytime; the kids just got a new pony to ride for a couple of months.
We've been up since 6 am. (get to sleep in on weekends)...oh, wait, I'm supposed to send my kids out into the great outdoors more? Let me run down the street and see if I can catch up with my son -- he just headed out the door to play with his friends.
**yeah, this is sarcasm -- if my kids were outdoors any more than they are already, they'd live in a tent (which just might happen if this economy doesn't pick up). Hey, fearless leader, I'd be more than happy to do more outdoorsy things with my kids, but I need more money (ehem, fix the economy so I can get a good job that pays enough so we have time and money for such things) and I need to be able to concealed carry (so my kids and I don't get jumped, by people or varmints) -- do that, and I'd be more than happy to do more hunting, fishing, horse riding, kayaking, hiking, and camping than we already do.

Rising within the academic ranks is not dependent on intelligence.
Intelligence is a major (but not only) factor in success in school, but success in school is not sufficient to become a full professor. (Case in point: Barack Obama.) Basically, how you did in school gets you access to PhD programs and postdoctoral appointments... that's it.
The fact is that folks who become full professors or department chairs or deans or whatever are not necessarily the smartest ones in their department. They write the best grant proposals, play academic politics well, work hard, and in some cases get lucky in their research discoveries.
There's a drop off in women going from PhD programs and postdoctoral programs to assistant professors to associate professors to full professors. I've sat on admissions committees for graduate school - there is not a bias to admitting female students even in quantitative sciences (like biophysics). Similarly, with the exception of a pre-disposition to hire a minority person who has an NSF postdoctoral fellowship (and is therefore "free" labor for a lab), I've never seen any (science) professor take someone into their lab based on anything other than qualifications. There's simply not enough room in most people's labs to accommodate someone because of their gender. I have, however, sat on faculty search committees where the possibility that a woman candidate might have kids came up in discussion. So, too, have I sat on committees where the decision was made to look for a senior hire, knowing full-well that that would limit the number of female candidates in the pool.
There's also an inherent bias in the don's argument - namely, that performance in mathematics or the physical sciences are the best determinants of intelligence. There are many types of intelligence.

Thanks for your insight on this from the inside. There's another possible reason for this - there's simply way too many graduate students and post docs (so I've heard) for academia to take them all. And I mean on several orders of magnitude too much.

Not really. The objective fields, such as math and the hard sciences, are not open to the sort of political games you speak of. A proof is a proof is a proof. Of course, there is politics involved in departments deciding which concentrations they want to fund in their staffs, but that still would not restrict a truly gifted mathematician or physicist from getting a job - and certainly not keep anyone out of a PhD program.
Sadly, there is the politics of affirmative action that does restrict getting on faculty for some (and brings in many who are incompetent and not up to snuff in any way) but that is the opposite effect of what the article was addressing. We all know that affirmative action kills whatever field it's applied to. Luckily, its application to objective science is limited, at best.
The more subjective fields tend to be crap-filled, anyway. Half of them shouldn't even exist. They are there only to throw bones to dumb people, allowing them to think they are "academics" and "intellectuals", which is a joke.

There are not "many types of intelligence". There are many types of talents and abilities, but "intelligence" comprises the specific talents, or abilities, to think logically and solve logical puzzles, to identify logical patterns, and to abstract and formalize those patterns. The Gartner idea of the seven intelligences is affirmative action crap to make unintelligent people feel better about themselves by calling other attributes, "intelligence". They are not.

163 The veggie eating hippies coming out and trying their hand at a horse drawn plow at the annual pioneer days...I've mentioned that story before; it fits well here.
I haven't met one that can seriously handle the great outdoors for long (and that's with the comforts of a tent or RV and a cooler full of food...my dad's idea of a hunting trip would kill them).
The sad part is: I'd love to see kids outside more and out in nature -- hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, horse riding, dog sleds...all that stuff is good for you on every level: physically, mentally, emotionally. But how freaking hypocritical: most people can't do that stuff anymore thanks to eco-nut hippies, or a lousy economy that keeps you chained to your job, or it's too expensive to keep a horse or even a decent sized dog, and the land just isn't available anymore (thanks to urban sprawl, which is largely the result of stupid liberals wanting to get "out into the countryside"...whereby they turn it into a subdivision); plus multiculturalism has done it's part to destroy our image of ourselves as frontiersmen, pioneers, and replaced it with a glorification of an urban existence.
And now this? After all this time of cutting away at the (very American) desire to be out in nature doing active things, and now we're being ordered to, scolded? Go to hell!

180 Re: the different types of intelligence -- yes and no. It was of course a theory created to appeal to pc/compassionate claptrap, but to some extent there may be some truth to the basic premise. While there are people who are truly renaissance men and women -- brilliant at many different levels and things -- I've met many, very intelligent, highly educated people who were the stupidest mofos in every other aspect of their lives that you wondered how they managed to survive and raise their young; just as I've met people with less than high school levels of education (and barely passing at that), who were essentially "dumb" (a couple were barely literate), who were quite smart, clever, intelligent in certain aspects.
Maybe the best way to describe it is: they all were intelligent, but their circumstances and natural inclinations led them in different paths, and each had their own level of intelligence with which to draw off of.
Then there are those who are too damn dumb to clack two rocks together...

I understand and appreciate what you are saying, but I still disagree. Intelligence is pretty darn specific. It involves a certain sort of reasoning and is usually expressed in the language of intelligence - mathematics (formalized languages, more generally). Someone who is a "genius with his hands" (as the old saying would go, before Gartner achieved infamy by claiming the same and describing it in some retarded psychological babble) is not "intelligent" because of that ability, but "talented" at whatever craft we are talking about. This does not take anything away from his (or her) talent, but there is no reason that one must try and tell everyone that every talent is "intelligence". Of course, the problem solving involved in that craft IS intelligence, but that is not what people are generally referring to when they want to point to a talent (such as the ability to shoot 3 pointers from 50 feet) and claim that there is something "intelligent" about it.
It is the desire to slap the label "intelligence" onto every single ability that is a major problem. People do that because they think, deep down, that there is something special about "intelligence" (and there is) but instead of understanding and appreciating that, they think that just calling every talent "intelligence" will make everyone feel better about himself.
With regard to women in the hard sciences (just finishing up an earlier point) there were a few women who deserved Nobel prizes (in the hard sciences) but did not get them because of nothing but anti-female sentiment, notably Lisa Meitner and Rosalind Franklin. That was back when the Nobel meant something. Nowadays, it's more political than anything else, with the Peace and Literature Prizes being nothing more than global leftist awards for retards.

202 The trouble I'm having with the concept is the parameters we put upon the definition of "intelligence". The "talent" you are describing...could it not be considered "intelligence"? (although I was considering more the case scenario of a couple of semi-illiterate hillbillies I know, who, while they did very poorly in traditional education, were quite capable of taking apart, fixing, and even improving upon motor engines and the like, or some rather skilled farmers I also know who only have high school educations, but are very successful at farming, which isn't just dropping seeds in the ground at all...rather than somebody who can consistently score 3 pointers; the latter is a matter of physical skill and practice, but the former did involve a certain amount of reasoning and creative problem solving ability). None of the people I mention here as examples are what many would consider "unintelligent" if judged from some of the parameteres people place upon the definition, but they have proven themselves to not only know a skill, but highly capable of improvising, adapting, and creating things without outside direction. Similarly, just how smart is (for example) the math prof who can't seem to learn how to properly use jumper cables, no matter how many times he's been shown how to do so? (yep, that's a good friend of ours too -- nice guy, really smart guy at what he does, but you just can't trust him with anything remotely mechanical, unless you're hankering for a scene of massive destruction). Nobody would deny that he isn't intelligent; he is -- but is he really any smarter, any more intelligent than my semi-literate hillbilly friend who can repair and enhance any engine set in front of him without benefit of any manual (who would be lost in my professor friend's most basic math class)? Is it a case of confusing intelligence with educational level? (and no, educational achievement, while it can be a hallmark of intelligence, isn't imho a guarantee of the same.)
I think intelligence can take a lot of different forms and levels. We could say that talent and intelligence overlap to a certain degree and are unique to every individual without being horridly pc about it.

Perhaps Obama has seen the British judge's lame decision declaring the right to travel to be a human right and thus governmental financing of travel is required?
Again, while this right may be wonnerful, having a government program to facilitate it, is not. Will the government be liable if the hunter, instead of shooting a squirrel, shoots an endangered speicies? or a fellow program participant?

That is intelligence, no matter the field. Problem solving. But that is not what Gartner is talking about with his "Seven Intelligences" (which mght have been expanded since his first writing).
Intelligence does not mean that one can do everything, merely that one can do problem solving in some system, if he so desires, or understand logical reasoning or identify logical patterns.
>>>Is it a case of confusing intelligence with educational level? (and no, educational achievement, while it can be a hallmark of intelligence, isn't imho a guarantee of the same.)
I don't think so. The problem is that much of what we call "education" (such as in the humanities and other soft fields) are just jokes. But, education in the hard sciences is directly related to ones intelligence. People have natural limits to what they can comprehend, and those limits define the outer boundaries of their intelligence, as applied to that field. But, intelligence, in those circumstances, always refer to logical thinking and the ability to construct/follow logical arguments.
>>>I think intelligence can take a lot of different forms and levels. We could say that talent and intelligence overlap to a certain degree and are unique to every individual without being horridly pc about it.
Posted by: unknown jane at May 08, 2010 12:39 PM (5/yRG)
Intelligence is a fairly specific sort of talent, or ability. It is wrong to try to replace "talent" with "intelligence". All that does is destroy any meaning that the word "intelligence" had, which is the intention of the left (as they do with so mcuh of our langauge).

217 Yeah, but you did point out yourself that many people have a very flawed concept of what intelligence really is (taking my example: many would call my semi-literate friend unintelligent, dumb, etc. -- due to his lack of literacy and standard education, but would they be correct in that assumption? Similarly, while many would consider my math prof friend a genius due to his education, there are times when, in certain areas, I find him, bless his heart, dumb as a box of rocks -- really, basic vehicle maintenence isn't rocket science).
Since you had to bring up the humanities (and that's my area of expertise, as is my husband's -- both of us can use jumper cables and change our oil) -- let's try another example: I routinely was paid by a collegue in the physics department to edit his writing. This was another intelligent person within his field, but he could not write his way out of a wet paper bag -- it went beyond grammar and spelling (which were atrocious); the basic composition and thesis formulation were horrid as well. There was nothing wrong with his work...he just could never learn to express his ideas clearly in writing (and I tried to work with him which was an uphill struggle -- the money was decent, but I really didn't want to be tied down with unraveling his ideas, interpreting them correctly, and getting them down on paper so much; besides, it's really better for people to write about their own work as there is a risk of meaning drift; that makes me very stressed out -- I have enough of that for myself without taking more on). So, if we are to judge from hard sciences vs. humanities, he would be an intelligent person then, and someone like me is merely a talented dolt? Because quite honestly, if you looked at his original writings you would wonder what idiot created such garbage (he could change his oil, knew how to use jumper cables though).
Again, I think you are taking the definitions of intelligence and what is "real" learning directly from the people you profess to despise -- the humanities are "bad" and not "real learning"...you take it at face value because you don't like the people running those departments right now. The latter half of the arguement is fair enough, but you proceed to throw an entire segment of learning out the window because you don't like what other people have done to that segment -- that's an error in logic right there. (just as much of an error as the person who would call my hillbilly stupid and my math prof friend a genius, and thus let the prof use their jumper cables, no?)

learning"...you take it at face value because you don't like the people
running those departments right now.
I don't take my definition of intelligence from anyone. It is MY definition, from my experience and what I see.
I think you take my attitude about most non-science pursuits too personally. The fact is that more subjective fields get filled with more mediocre (and worse) people and that many of these fields have no reason to even exist as academic pursuits - not on their own, though the endeavors are often legitimate, tiny parts of other fields.
As to writing ability and intelligence, it's just a fact that many great writers are total idiots - most, even. That doesn't mean that all good writers are dumb, but the ability to express oneself in writing is not directly tied to ones ability to think logically or understand the world. Of course, many of these great writers, who couldn't think their way out of a paper bag, are suffering more from emotional issues than outright stupidity, but those emotions take over their minds, cloud their judgment and leave them with nothing but stupid ideas. But, you have to be very careful not to personalize this statement about the group.

I don't throw anything out. There are qualitative differences in the various fields of human endeavor. That is a fact. That says nothing about any individual in any field, but addresses aggregate qualities of the groups in those fields.
And, I would just stress, just because one can do high-level math doesn't make one a genius - not even close. Genius is something altogether different that has nothing to do with education, but is connected to actual problem solving and the construction/creation of radical new implements, languages and approaches. Unfortunately, the word "genius" has been destroyed, having very little actual value left to it, just as the word "intelligence" is being destroyed - linguistic grade inflation, if you will.

227 Are you making the distinction between the different forms of writing? Not all writing is poetry and/or novels? In fact, the majority of writing is not in the creative field (although I considered Twain and Kipling very astute, intelligent people; even crazy old Edgar Poe was quite adept at interpreting the human psyche long before the field of psychology made its way into the world).
And I suppose I do take things a bit personally -- but that's a bit understandable, now isn't it? (look really closely at what you yourself have written, and place it within the context of what others have said...you state that you do not...and then you go ahead and you sort of do my friend).

TDP, I work with someone who went to that fancy private school in Hawaii with BO. She said once, "Barry was one of the stoners!"

Bad case of engineer envy (for the rest of the human race) going on here. All you lower level thinkers? Make the biggest mistake of your professional life, and you'll nullify a contract, spoil a narrative, fail to make a point that might have done some good. So you're, like, nothing. You're not an engineer!
Let an engineer fuck up, and people die, just like that, and they don't come back to life when you hit 'reset' either. So, either a lot of persons who consider themselves to be practicing engineers (and let's be fair and note that most people with engineering degrees are not practicing engineers) have never met a numbnuts fuck-up of an engineer, even though they exist in veritable scads, or the mewling bleats of these higher (math only!) minds, who must have received the wedgie of all time from some English major somewhere, are in fact the voice of the tits-up turtle in this our land.
I don't know about the rest of you, but whenever I get stuck with one of these guys on a job, I go back and double-check his work before I sign off. Quebec bridge, and all that: not his grammar, although it's usually wanting; the actual stuff he's supposed to know how to do--because you cannot trust them.

But here's the thing, Barry-- the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is groaning with RV's, SUV's, minivans, and shuttlebuses. Sometimes the NPS has to limit the amount of people going in so that the rangers aren't overwhelmed. So gee, is Toonces saying he wants all those big bad carbon emitters and stomping kids eroding away the environment?

It's not just a "talent." It's a whole set of skills and instincts which, when complied, form a comprehensive way of learning and acting. A people few are more balanced than others, and yeah, some are just a box of rocks, but I've found that the most successful people are those who somehow find out where their intelligence lies, and then proceed to work their asses off.
I also taught teach writing to students who ere in highly technical fields. Some of the same people who were designing propellants for deep space exploration could barely put a sentence together. And then there are those like me, who scored in the 98% of verbal abilities on the SAT, but who also suffer from a learning disability and get lost in even familiar neighborhoods.
Sometimes you do get astonishing people like James May of Top Gear, who is an accomplished musician and mechanically inclined, but is also verbally deft. Or Benjamin Franklin, who was obviously a genius on just about every level. But not often. This shouldn't excuse jocks from learning how to put an intelligible sentence together or creative writing majors from knowing how to balance a checkbook. However, from what I've seen in the classroom and simple interaction with other human beings, I really do think there are different types of intelligence.

Diane Johnson fan? You don't meet too many of those, or former friends of Barry. A few here and there.
I read an interview with his former teacher at Punahou, Barbara Nelson, who now lives in Buffalo. She said he was a B student who was still special. Yeah, special and stoned off his ass.

I agree with Unknown Jane. Intelligence expresses itself differently through natural talents which, at their cores, are always dependent on problem solving, no matter the talent. Math ability is an inate talent as much as the inate talent of writing well. Both depend on a penchant for understanding problem solving in differentare areas.
Savants, as an extreme, are considered to be mentally retarded, but they have genius-level talents in very limited and specific areas of problem solving (math, music, sculpting, etc). Music, an art, is mathematic at its core.
Math gets its deserved recognition because it has its written language as its proof, but I'd like to know if Einstein could have filled the shoes of Beethoven (and Einstein's talent was far greater as a concept visionary than as a mathematician).

Encouraging exercise is one thing. Declaring it a "responsibility" of the Federal government is a) nonsense, b) a lie, and c) the rhetorical opening inviting tangible legislation that would be Unconstitutional.
Obama has a) no appreciation for the limits government in our Republic, and b) no comprehension of his tendencies religion toward overbearing paternalistic socialism.
The man doesn't understand his role in America. Sure, he can mouth the words, but he perverts it when he tries to enact it.

We like to think of ourselves as, well, innovators of only the highest quality of lunacy to which other people on other blogs like KOS can aspire.
But hey, this is an off day here. Come back again sometime when the real loonies are here, keeping in mind that everything that you read here will be more comprehensible if you're drunk or stoned out of your mind ..., or if you're, oh, just a teeny weeny bit retarded.
BTW, If you're not already loony before you come here, you've come to the wrong blog today. That's the bad news. The good news is that you'll be so loony by the time that you leave here that you'll be all prepped and loony enough to come here again and to recognize that this is the right blog for you.

Is there a better analogy than comparing him to King Midas, excepting that everything he touches turns to shit? You wonder why I'm concerned he wants to touch my private life? Well half my company has been laid off and the rest of us are under a wage freeze with reduced benefits for the past year... so he's already fucked my job; the housing market is in turmoil screwing up the rental markets... so he's fucked my home life... now he wants to fuck with my free time?
What gives you any confidence that he'll do anything except completely fuck this up too? Yeah, thinking he'll fuck this up is insane... the rational thinker decides he's probably due to get something right? I'm guessing if you pick racehorses with that logic you're broke and have some broken limbs?
