— Dave in Texas I'm just following some Twitter tracking of this thing. Here's a link to RNC Research Live Response To Health Care Summit via LorieByrd.
Geraghty comments on Pelosi's idiotic claim that the bill will create 4 million jobs (no mention of jobs saved, likely for a very good reason). Also several comments about Pelosi's inane argument that the American people don't have time for us to restart on health care, even though we have years for the thing to actually be implemented.
Nice that others are actually watching this crap so we don't have to.
Full Speed Ahead! [Slublog] - Politico outlines what the Democrats are planning to do after the summit:
After a brief period of consultation following the White House health-reform summit, Congressional Democrats plan to begin making the case next week for a massive, Democrats-only health-care, party strategists told POLITICO.So basically, no change at all.A Democratic official said the six-hour summit was expected to “give a face to gridlock, in the form of House and Senate Republicans.”
Democrats plan to begin rhetorical, and perhaps legislative, steps toward the Democrats-only, or reconciliation, process early next week, the strategists said.
Obama just pledged this morning that this will not be political theater. Could this be the fastest Obama Expiration Date™ ever?
DrewM: One of the first conflicts was between Obama and Lamar Alexander. Lamar said the bills would raise premiums, Obama said kind of because people would "choose" to buy better and more expensive policies.
Alexander is right and Obama is wrong. Premiums would go up because people would be forced to buy, not given the choice to buy, more expensive plans.
This is a key point...does this plan raise or lower cost for people who have insurance now. Obama is wrong and/or lying.
This thing is a joke and not a funny one.
UPDATE from Gabe [DiT]: He's identified Obama's ground rules for discussion.
1. Democrats get more time because "I'm the President."
2. Republicans may not criticise my bill. They can only talk about things on which we agree.
3. Republicans may not use the word "Washington" because it tips the scales.

THis isn't Kabuki. This is a voodoo zombification ritual to resuscitate the most dangerous, hated, worst legislation to ever come through Congress - and which refuses ot die, no matter how many death blows it's been hit with. ANd, now, the GOP are particiapting in yet another attempt to revive it.
I cannot express how unbelievably stupid it was for the GOP to participate in this. They should have left the Dems there, all by themselves. Now, THAT would have been pretty funny. But no ... the GOP just had to help revive this zombie legislation ...

Some random thoughts so far, for discussion:
1.) The Republicans made a smart, smart move in going with Lamar! for the opening statements. Why? Because he's a gentle squish. Armed with his recent vote for the "jobs bill" he can go in and do his folksy ex-governor soft-shoe and present a moderate, reasonable sounding face to the world. He did a fine job of summarizing the case and spoke in a tone that gave off the vibe "common sense & reasonable" rather than "frothy obstructionist." As fantastic as McCain has been for us in opposition to Obama (actually, probably BECAUSE of it), he could never have pulled this off.
2.) Tom Coburn is a fucking national treasure, and I hate the fact that he has term-limited himself.
3.) On points & presentation, the GOP is solidly ahead now for those who are watching, but make no mistake: Obama is coming off well too. It hit me the moment everyone sat down that this is the setting he lives for, the one he thrives in: the seminar or panel discussion. Tonally, there's just no question that he has a masterful touch, and on a purely operative level I tip my cap to his skillz.

Obama told the story about how when his mother was dying she had to deal with insurance companies.
Didn't she have a Haavard Law School graduate for a son? Why was she dealing with the insurance companies. When did she die? Even it was before he went to Haavard then he still was fully capable (heh) of dealing with the insurance companies. Everytime my mother has an issue with her insurance, broker, dentist, doctors, pharmacy, the irs, her car dealer, the social security admin, the county etc etc etc, I DEAL with it. When you're dealing with doctors that try to cheat the elderly, the type written words "Medicare Fraud" do wonders.

"Gridlock" is a feature, not a flaw, of the legislative process under the US Constitution. It often arises when an out of control congressional majority tries to steamroller a power grab over common sense and the will of the people.
So, if this asshat is really saying what I think he's saying it means that Democrats are ready to push for abandoning the Constitutional process and submitting Americans to the "tyranny of the majority".
Or, as P.J. O'Rourke famously said: "... I live with four dogs and three children, if we voted on what to have for dinner we would be eating Froot Loops and rotten meat."
The Democrat's new rallying cry: "Froot Loops and rotten meat for everybody!"

It's time to use Obama's logic against the insurance companies against him:
Obama's grandmother died during the campaign and she was on Medicare, ergo Medicare kills people. In fact, most people who die in the U.S. are under Medicare. That means Medicare is worse than private insurance, cause more people die under it. Best I can tell Medicare is a government killing machine.

I would never have the GOP talk about the dems' bill, because it's un-Constitutional. But they need to tell the dems to go handle the government's resposibilty to reform Medicare and the dems have already claimed that there is an easy half trillion they can trim, in just waste and fraud. The GOP needs to hammer on the dems to just do this, now. If the GOP kept answering ALL health care talk with that one line, the Dems would just shut up and drop it all, finally, because we all know that that half-trillion doesn't exist (not that any Congress would be able to find it, at least).

That's right. The American people want this legislation killed and buried, already. But the GOP is helping to raise it from the dead ... for the 12th time.
So you'd prefer the Dems get a free 90 minute infomercial extolling the virtues of socialist healthcare completely unanswered?
The dog and pony show summit would've happened with or without Republican participation. Had they sat it out, the Dems (with the help of the MSM) would've been able to play the "obstructionist" card to greater effect.

You've hit the nail on the head. When Obama and company bring up "obscene" insurance profits, tell them that Medicare waste, fraud and abuse is 5 TIMES the insurance company profits. Make it clear that the problem is government, not private enterprise.

The only thing that concerns me about this PR stunt is whether or not the RINOs on the Republican side are going to cave or not based on some useless beard. And if they do cave, how far they are going to cave.
No I have to take that back. As this stands right now, ANY cave at all will result in the ultimate nationilization of all healthcare within 10 years. That what the commie-Ds want. It has been thir goal since FDR was president.

The point is that they can say that the republicans wouldn't compromise so we have to put it through ourselves.

For example, my neighbor lady became partially disabled a few years ago, lost her job and with that her insurance, has tried parttime work to pay the rent, etc. She truly does everything she can to survive. She's 55, white and lives in a rural area. There is no help for her. None. She has no money to move, let alone physical abilities to do so. Unless, somehow (lawyers now go wink, wink) she "becomes" more disabled, gets pregnant, moves to a government housing of some sort, she is screwed. She can't buy health insurance now, she can't work fulltime at a job that offers benefits, and she's years away from Medicare.

It's sad, but "sad" is not an argument for nationalizing 1/6th of the economy and fucking over everyone else. But clearly, if she can't even work part-time, she's eligible for services that already exist.

Exactly! I just had a baby a month ago. Got the bill and the hospital's worked out a pretty nice payment arrangement with us for my portion. Frankly, they don't really care how long it takes us to pay it off so long as they get something from us each month. Hospital billing agent flat-out said that to me.

However, they still go on vacations (some out of the country) have a boat, house, motorcycle, flat screen tv, iphone, laptop, do I need to go on?

One quick way to clear this whole thing up. Obama passes his plan. Fine. But it applies to EVERYONE, including the prez and all government employees, including Congress. Hell, exspecially Congress!
No more free rides off the taxpayers. No more exclusions for this that and the other.
Then let's see what happens.
Oh, I'd say it wouldn't pass. Anyone care to bet against?

You're right. Because it would mean hospitals and doctors would actually be getting paid. Between the medicare/medicaid ripoff that doesn't even pay enough to cover the cost of supplies and services and all the galling with insurance companies, prices go up because docs don't get paid and when they do it takes for-freaking-ever.

All liberals hate numbers. They're not at all compassionate, they don't care about your good intentions, they always try to prevent you from implementing the next program.
No they don't hate ALL numbers. They love BS lies like 45,000,000 Americans do not have health insurance and can not get it. They spout numbers every day. Too bad the numbers they like is just like all other crap that vomits forth from their pie-holes; it is all lies.

How about telling people that for every $200 you work for, we will give you $50. plus pay 50% of your Dr. bill? (math isn't my forte, btw)
Regarding those Iowa cab rides mentioned earlier -- they do NOT pay for cab rides to work, however.

That's a huge part of the problem. Part of it is that the federal courts have forced these "unfunded mandates" for care on everyone. If the Congress and the Executive don't screw us all, the federal judiciary will do it.
This is a feral government that has reverted to wild as it broke away from the domesticating constraints of the Constitution. It will not be domesticated again.
And the GOP hasn't seen fit to even bother mentioning that pesky old Constitution for this voodoo zombification ritual for the health scare carcass.

Look folks, this so-called summit was called for one purpose only. It is designed to give the MSM another excuse to shows non-stop hours of communist propaganda from the jug-eared jackass and call it news. At thye same time it gives them a chance to poke out some more lies about theevil Republicans and their buddies in the insurance buisness who make that outrageous profit (3.5%).
The ONLY real news that will come out of this is how bad the RINOs cave. We will see that after the "summit" so there is no point in watching it unless you are a conservative blogger who is tracking what is actually said vs what the MSM says was said.
