Hellllloooooo West Virgina
— DrewM

Rasmussen says it's close, really close in the race to replace the Grand Cyclops (or whatever he was).

West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin and Republican businessman John Raese continue to run a surprisingly close race in the state's special Senate election to replace the late Robert Byrd.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in West Virginia shows Manchin with 50% support and Raese with 45%, when leaners are included. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate in the race, and three percent (3%) are undecided.

The West Virginia race now moves from Leans Democratic to a Toss-Up in the Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 Senate Balance of Power rankings. Less than two weeks ago, the first post-primary survey of the race moved it from Solid Democratic to Leans Democratic.

Meanwhile, we are still waiting on word if Lisa "It's my damn seat cause daddy gave it to me" Murkowski is going to run a write-in campaign that can only be viewed as a sour grapes, spoiler effort.

National Republican establishment money is lining up behind Joe Miller, with a $212,000 pledge from the same national campaign committee Miller accused of trying to steal the election for incumbent U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski. The support comes as Murkowski is considering an independent write-in candidacy after losing to Miller in last month's Republican primary.

...Miller spokesman Randy DeSoto said Wednesday the campaign didn't think it was appropriate for the NRSC to choose sides before the Republican primary was decided.

"They heard us out, and they responded," DeSoto said. "We were pleased with their response, and we're pleased they're also backing the campaign."

Murkowski's own Denali Leadership Political Action Committee in May contributed $15,000 to the NRSC -- joining the pot of money that will now flow to Miller, potentially to use against Murkowski if she wages a write-in effort as an independent. Murkowski's campaign staffers are waiting to hear if she will.

Good to see the party apparatus coming together behind the legitimate party nominee.

10 So thats 13. 13 seats that are vulnerable to lost for the Dems.. And we need 10. We have AR,DE,IN,ND,PA with large leads (Toomey up about 8-9 pts in a state that swung to Obama by 10 in '0 CO,IL,WA with leads in the averages We are also ahead in CA,WI if you JUST look at the Likely Voter polls (since the enthusiasm gap in the primaries and past races in 09 and early 10 prove the RV model sucks). In fact in Rasmussen alone we lead in 10 states. Oh and then theres Nevada with a tossup, CT with a slight Dem lead but crashing, WV the same. Doable.

11 What's the best Murkowski could achieve?  Throwing the race to the Democrat.

And where would this leave her longterm political viability?  Right in the shitter.  She'd be toxic to Republicans after that, so it's just sour grapes and desire to be a spoiler.

There's literally nothing for her to gain from opposition other than spite.

23 For the record, if we pulled off the seemingly impossible and won every competitive seat this year, it means a Republican, within just 2 years of Obama's election, now sits in: Kennedys old seat. Dodds old seat Castles old seat Specters old seat Bayhs old seat Feingolds seat Obamas old seat Byrds old seat Dorgans old seat Bennetts old seat Reids old seat (knocking out the Senate Majority Leader) Boxers seat Murrays seat. It would mean we won all open/special elect seats except for Hillary's AND defeated 5 incumbants.

Has a Dem firewall been published for the Senate seats yet?

Posted by: Blue Hen at September 09, 2010 08:12 AM (R2fpr)

42 Blue if it happens- They are going to abandon ALL the Republican Open seats. Then they abandon races which are totally lost- AR,IN,DE,ND. If that still doesnt help them, Sestak goes under the bus too. Perhaps even Alexi now that Kirk is about to unleash the monetary Kraken now that his favorables have climbed with his poll numbers. The firewall to stop the flip will eventually be around- California, Washington, Nevada, and Wisconsin. The other 9 could go GOP, but still prevent a GOP Senate. They will protect their longterm incumbants ahead of anyone else- much like the NRSC trying to save Lisa Murkowski, their Dem equivilant will abandon all the young blood to save the old.

43 RCP finally reflecting what I have said for 2 weeks- no more GOP-held tossups anymore. Florida, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Missouri, and New Hampshire have all drifted to lean/likely GOP. ALL the tossups are Democratic seats now, and WV/CT are drifting to just lean Dem. So long as we don't fuck up the New Hampshire primary...sweetness.

Makes sense.

1.I am very worried that if O'Donnell wins here in Delaware, then it will be added to the list. They can trot out Biden here; it's the one place where his incompetence is revered.

2. Any truth to the rumors that Feingold is in serious trouble?

They already shitcanned Molohan. Joe "Open For Business" Manchin has been seen as a competent, popular Governor who was good enough at his job until he was tied too closely to Obama and ran for US Senate. If he thought he could have gotten away with appointing himself to the seat and keeping it, he would, but there is a chill wind blowing for incumbents. Joe Manchin could easily be the next Charlie Crist. This race is winnable.

If nothing else, this race is contestable. The Dems have to fight for this seat. Last year at this time, they were able to let an invalided klansman 'occupy' the seat. Now they have to fight to keep it. And to do so, they have to hide or repudiate their stated energy policies.

Even if Manchin wins, their hopes of ramming through crap an trade are slim. They have a better chance of Castle voting for it. Crap.

51 42 Blue if it happens-

Bingo.  The key here is where they will spend their money.  Think about it, you are the DSCC chair.  Where do you send your money?  Now you're thinking about sinking money into what was a sure WV race, you have to send money to CT and IL.  But you still need to protect incumbents in WA, WI, NV and CA.

PA is a lost cause, DE is if Castle wins, CO is probably not worth the money, etc., etc.

And the Murky fiasco is showing how these committees work.  The incumbents can demand the lion's share of the money and I would guess that Reid and Boxer will be Hoovering up the cash.  Murray and Feingold just aren't in the right cliques.

Moreover, the more money the Senate races get, the less money House races get.  Republicans can win this year on a shoestring, but Democrats can't.  Even with huge money blitzes, they still can't demonize candidates like Angle enough.

Here is Nate Silver in the NYT article
Republicans Have One-in-Four Chance to Claim Senate Majority, Model Shows

The other hurdle is more tangible: there are a series of competitive Republican primaries, in which candidates supported by the Tea Party are pitted against more moderate alternatives.

In Delaware, for instance, Christine O’Donnell — who has the Tea Party’s support — could defeat Representative Michael N. Castle in the primary there next week. Mr. Castle, Delaware’s former governor and its lone representative in the House, would be a clear favorite against his Democratic opponent, Chris Coons. But Mr. Coons would be favored to defeat Ms. O’Donnell, making Republicans’ prospects of a Senate takeover considerably more remote.

Agreed, never said otherwise. But please note this: No one here in Delaware is saying that. They are touting fiscal strength (many points for, cap'n trade against) and running attack ads. In fact, now the national press is touting him as a moderate, centrist kinda guy.
