I stand by my assertion that none of this bullshit the lame duck congress has "passed" should be legally binding until the newly elected congress -- fresh off their mandate from the AMERICAN PEOPLE -- approves it.  But since there's no such recourse currently in the Constitution, I'm going to have to sit in the corner and scream in frustration a little longer.

Me? I am currently a Sergeant Major in the Army, I was a Master Sergeant in Afghanistan and a First Sergeant in Iraq. 23 years of service and 2 combat tours.

I initially disagreed with the repeal of DADT for several reasons. First, will the Military be required to recognzie gay marriages? Service personnel can legally claim any state as a residence and many choose states without income tax. Now they can choose ones that recognize gay marriage? I am sure federal recognition of gay marriage is a feature, not a bug, built into the repeal.

Second, there will be no way to regulate unmarried co-habitation or commingling in the military gay community. Currently there are male barracks and female barracks that prevent male and female soldiers from hooking up in the barracks. It still happens, but is a no-no. So after repeal, a straight soldier cannot go 20toes with his girlfriend because females are not allowed in his barracks. The guy next door, however, doesn't even have to sneak his boyfriend in.

Third, the military is absolute. A person whose religious beliefs run contrary to homosexuality either has to hold his tongue or will be treated harshly for his beliefs. Gay soldiers previously were treated harshly for their actions. We have essentially changed who we discriminate against.

Now, why do I no longer disagree? I think all of the above are valid points but I was recently color guard at my father's funeral in ful uniform with my nephew. My WWII veteran uncle who has never spoken of his time at war (he was under Patton) opened up about his time after the funeral. He is from a town of about 1000 people, survived the Dust Bowl, and is a good Christian man. This line changed my mind:

"Alot of queers in the war. Gawd-o-mighty alot of queers. Hmmpf. Good fighters, though, alot of them.. good fighters."

If he can handle it, so can I.

However, there is an advantage no one ever mentions. The policy has often been abused by heterosexuals who, having completed lengthy, expensive training and/or security clearances on the government dime, use it to duck their remaining service obligation. Contractors make a lot more than E-4s and there isn't much stigma attached to being gay/lesbian anymore. So they turn around and announce to their commanders, "sir, I'm a homo and I engage in homo conduct. Guess you'll just have to throw me out now."  And as DADT is currently implemented, yes, they do. Infuriating.

I'll be very glad to see that sh1t stop. While repealing DADT arguably replaces one problem with another, it's not like the gay/lesbian demographic will now sign up in droves. It's mostly a symbolic victory - the only kind the left cares about - and I think (hope) the problem will turn out to be mostly symbolic too.

Another aspect that I've never really heard anyone mention: gays & lesbians - particularly those inclined to military service - may PREFER to keep their orientation quiet. I served with quite a few "queers" myself (10 years ago). We knew, they knew we knew, but we all tacitly kept up the polite fiction, and it was all good.

I can't see a single one of them, say, skipping up to formation and breaking into song, thrilled to finally be able to unburden themselves to everyone they know, that they are into [whatever deviant sex acts]. Just about all of my Air Force dentists were gay. They'd talk about travels with their "partners" while they did their excellent work. They were serious people in serious relationships, and as discreet about their bedroom activities as any hetero in a serious relationship.

It concerns me that now people like that might feel required to come out, or that some gay-baiting jerk will shatter that polite fiction that made it all work, because it's no longer required. Paradoxically enough, repealing DADT may actually create problems for homosexuals who are not of the "out & proud" variety - who tend to loathe and avoid the military anyway. As ever, the law of unintended consequences will very likely harm those it was intended to protect.

You're absolutely right, Drew.  I had a great watermelon joke, but I'm not going to post it!

134  There have always, and there will always be those men in the western military that think more of the lives of children than of their own lives. I saw it in my own war in the 1960s and my yet to be born great grand children will see it in theirs. It's simply the kind of men we breeders raise. It is why, every year, adults are lost jumping into rivers, trying to save a child they don't even know.

 There are many that don't feel that way. Those are the draftees that made up Lt. Calley's outfit. Those people are why I enlisted with Mother Green instead of waiting for the draft and the Army and a shorter enlistment. I was neither a hero nor a hee-row, merely a guy that once wore Uncle's suit. I served with a few men who did not like girls the way the rest of us did, a few were troublemakers who we got rid of. It is very easy to get rid of someone who does not fit in with a Rifle Platoon. The rest? Did their jobs, the same way the rest of us did.

 Mostly we had two man holes with one awake and the other sleeping. Rarely, too rarely, we had enough men in the Platoon for three man holes with two sleeping and one watching. That was real luxury. What we cared about was that the one watching stayed alert so that we didn't wake up with a Gomer in the hole with us. We also didn't want to wake up with anyone's hand on our dicks but our own. Other than that, we wanted to not come home in a big silver box.

 I don't think those kids today who are wearing Uncle's suit are that much different than me, or my Dad who wore Uncle's suit in WW2, or my grand-dad who served in WW1 or my GGGrandfather who took the walkin' tour through Georgia with Cump Sherman. Only the boots are different, the feet are the same. American volunteers, God love 'em.
