Hey, Check it Out, Conservatives Have Discovered the Internet or Something
— Ace

But really, it has been known, and grumbled about for years, that conservatives (and the GOP) were clueless about using the Internet for partisan purposes.

For a long time -- not sure if you noticed this -- but this blog followed the older model of sniping at the media and trying to avoid direct action type stuff, all spectator sort of stuff.

In the 2008 campaign I personally started a more Kos-like direct boosterism. Especially months out from an election, where it was GAME FACES, MAN all the time.

Is that good or bad? Well, your mileage may differ. Whatever standing I had as a disinterested observer (the amount of such standing I once had: zero) is gone now, of course.

Anyway, that's my own discovery of the use of the internet for expressly partisan purposes. Ross Douthat notes the conservative netroots are finally a force to be reckoned with.

BTW: I wasn't comfortable about this at first. It is easier to be against stuff than for stuff. Most crap sucks, so if you're against it as a general rule, you're right 90% of the time.

It's harder to be *for* something. You can look silly if you're *for* something and that thing turns out to be not so good.

Well, not harder really. It's not hard to be a cheerleader. But certainly you're investing more of your credibility when you're huckstering something.

But, be that as it may, at some point it's time to drop the "disinterested commentator" line and just admit the obvious, I'm in the bag for the GOP/conservative candidate, and might as well fully embrace that.

You don't pretend to be objective.  In any case, as long  as you abide by the "fake, but accurate" standards of the networks you'll be cool.

25 I may be wrong, but I think Republicans, and especially conservatives, tend to be bad at the "game face" thingy. Just watch when Fox has those left/right opposing view segments before any election and the representatives from the left are generally much more on message -- they seem willing to tell any lie and defend any outrage to get their guy elected. On the right they usually have some egghead who spends half his time agreeing with the guy on the left and the other half trying to argue based on facts and logic.
Is the internet that different? I think conservatives tend to be more informed and less ideological.

60 Ok, I've found the definitive poll:

BOSTON --With 24 hours to go before Massachusetts' special election for a U.S. Senate seat, an Irish bookie already has paid off bettors who wagered that state Sen. Scott Brown, a conservative Republican, would win the seat held for nearly 50 years by liberal Democratic icon Edward M. Kennedy.

Enough is enough. It seems that Senator Brown just has to get out of bed tomorrow to win convincingly. As far as were concerned, this race is well and truly over," said Paddy Power, Irelands largest bookmaker.

Before shutting down the betting, Mr. Brown had gone from 5-4 odds to 1-5 (meaning if a bettors put down $5, they only stood to make $1 if Mr. Brown wins). The odds against his opponent -- Democrat Martha Coakley, the state's attorney general -- soared, from 4-7 to win to 3-1 to lose.

I'm one of those shlubs who figured out the Democrats and the media in general were bastards long before the internet. I did it through a combination of reading National Review and other relatvely obscure conservative publications and watching the news with a critical eye. I stopped believing in the mainstream media during Clinton's first campaign when Dan Rather's obvious bias should have resulted in a Triple XXX rating for his election night coverage. Jennings and Brokaw were no better. My turning point, where I decided I would never vote for a Democrat ever again was during the Clinton impeachment, when the Senate Democrats, en masse, refused to even look at the evidence. That told me loud and clear that to them Party came in first, second and third in their loyalties with country nowhere to be seen.

It wasn't always so. I had great respect for the Scoop Jackson's, Sam Nunn's and Zell Miller's of the Party. Not to mention JFK and Hubert Hunphrey. But the Party has redicalaized steadily in the years since, culminating with the banishment of Joe Lieberman for having the temerity to not toe the leftard line 100 fucking percent.

This is not even to mention the Progressive brainwashing campaign that's been successfully waged on our education system for over 30 years now - helping to create the Perfect Storm of last November's election. It's amazing there is any opposition left to the Democrats and it's a testament to the innate common sense of the American people that there's still around 50% of us who have resisted and called bullshit on the Progressives and their agenda.

Bottom line is I've been seeing this attack on our country for many years and welcome seeing people push back and get in the libtard's faces.

I don't know... I have found the internet to be the best place to find out what's going on with conservatives.  G-d knows I couldn't find out much before, being surrounded by the idiots in school, the newspapers and on tv.  There's a grand network on the internet for conservatives, if one just looks for it.

The gop does suck in its use of technology.  Also, the gop ignores the younger voters and leaves them to the wolves.  This last election, I received a ton of mailers from the jackasses and none from the elephants.  Thanks, gop!  Glad to know you care about my vote and those of my generation.  As a political party, they do not promote themselves well - in any medium.  They've given up on certain demographics (if not all).  They have let the media and schools define them and don't do a lot of outreach to counter that definition.

This is why conservative blogs/websites are so important.  For the most part, it's easier to get information and confirmation of news and ideals from independant blogs than it is from the major "conservative" party.  The tea party movement is a great example of the blog networks getting together and getting word out to organize conservative events.  It could be done better in some areas (like mine), but it's a start.

Never apologize for shifting from an “ideas” person to a “political” one. Nothing is more pathetic than “I vote for the man, not the party.”

That's Jesse Jackson, Jr.'s seat.  He might be nice to book on the talk shows but even in this year he won't win.  If he's a good candidate, he'll use the exposure to get himself nominated to some statewide office or something.

2010 and 2012 will be tough for black Republicans in black districts.  Even African-Americans who were sympathetic to the GOP wanted Obama elected as a symbol of racial progress.  The fact that he's a failure and that he's hurting African-Americans both economically and symbolically doesn't matter.

Not everyone under 35.  Just most of the kids.  The school system churns them out to blindly follow the liberal ideals.  Then they go into the education system and come out even more liberal, ready to prime more young minds. (most conservatives I know wouldn't go into the education system.  I admire those who do so.  Thair guts are made of steel)  This is all supplemented by the media and popular culture.  Motto:  Keep them stupid and immature and they vote liberal.  (Why else, aside from the money, would college be encouraging students to be on the 8/9/10 year plan?  The longer they stay as an undergrad wandering the halls, the better.  Frankly, school rots the brain more than it teaches.  Unless you find a good school.)

159 I think that the conservatives have caught on. But I would not read too much in this Mass election. First, it's isolated. There are virtually no other elections happening so it almost has the feel of a mini-presidential race Two, the President's agenda is on the ballot. You will get some of that in the mid-terms in November-but politics will be more localized then. Three, Notice how Brown has won. He has emphasized fiscal discipline (the Republican Congress from 2000-2006 forgot), smaller government-He has left social issues like abortion, gay marriage, etc off the table. We win on the small govt fiscal discipline gameplan. We lose on social issues. What does that tell you going forward? On judge appointments, talk property rights and not abortion.

That means showing we're serious about slashing the deficit. It doesn't mean tax cuts.

I think i've reached the point where I don't like the OFFICIAL Tea Party movement.

I live in PA, and i just saw a tea party commercial. What the funk are they doing running a commercial in PA. I don't think Pittsburgh is in the same ad market as boston. Also, why would you put an ad like that on anyway the day before the election. It is massachusetts, you don't want to alienate people. Just keep you mouth shut and let him win. Unless of course you want to take credit for his win after the fact.

Look, i've never been to a protest in my life until i went to the one on April 15, but even i had no idea the movement would fall apart so quckly. I thought the movement was about individuals doing their part and becoming more involved. It has turned into a top down organization now. A convention for Tea Partiers?  Really? Isn't that the anti-thesis of what the movement is about? I thought it was meant to be informal. I suspect there are certain groups, specifically the Republican party that are trying to hijack and profit off of the movement, and I think there are too many in the movement all to willing to go along.

My understanding was that we should get involved in local level politics, volunteer, be precient captains, grass roots stuff, not try to become a new PAC which has to shake down its members for money. I thought the idea of a "movement" was just the culmination of peoples anger at government, not an institution within itself.

I will continue to do what I can and I will donate to people from other states who need money and I support, but I want nothing to do with the Official Tea Party CPAC/Group/etc.

Speaking of which, make sure you donate money to Pat Toomey. It's a two for one reward. We make that jerk Arlen Specter pay for 30 years of left wing republicanism, his defection, and his seat gets taken by someone more fiscally conservative than Rick Santorum was.

That means showing we're serious about slashing the deficit. It doesn't mean tax cuts.

I both agree and disagree with you.  I agree that Laffer reflects the expectation of cost, but I am sure that increased taxes will depress economic activity further.

I say this from direct experience since the expiration of the Bush tax cuts and Obama/Reid/Pelosi looting is pushing me into reducing the amount I work (self-employed) in favor of my quality-of-life.  I am reducing both my consumption and production because I am not satisfied with the marginal returns I can pocket on that next bit of effort and because I want Obama to FAIL and his supporters to feel the pain of that failure.

I don't think there is a tax rate that can make a dent in the deficit.  The only way to reduce it is to cut the hell out of spending and to do whatever it takes to grow the economy.

I must respectfully disagree with my honorable AoS morons about the Tea Party movement.

btw, the other day I read some comments here from people worried about Sarah Palin showing up in Massachusetts for Scott Brown. If we're going to be pussi-...um, afraid of who is associated with our candidates because we're worried about what our political enemies might say, we might as well just pack it in.

Sarah Palin is a fine person and she doesn't deserved to be treated like she's toxic. And she, like Rush Limbaugh, has done more for us than ANY moderate squish we support because we think s/he is 'electable.'

Not saying Scott Brown is a squish, but...

Point is I think the best we can do is stick by our like-minded friends, especially the ones doing the heavy lifting and taking all the body-blows.

Trollish BS is the main problem with the internet, media, and politics.  I don't care if it's a long-timer or a newbie, troll posts should be identified, and the poster shunned.  If Ace goes the way of Charles Johnson (self-trolling fool), then he'll meet  the same fate.  Same goes for me, and naturally, for you.

I dont contribute to the national tea party movement, but I do support my local ones, at the state level.

and there are so many "Tea Party" orgs, I don't think there needs to be ONE official one, they all just need to be with relatively the same vision for America, getting back the very principles the country was founded on.

I kind of look at it as how the country was founded, it was a very loosely set up system, states rights were more important than federal rights. The Tea Party movement has to be local, but all moving in the same direction.

When it is organized at a local/state level, corruption is much easier to root out, and the locals tea parties are much more responsive and agile to organize.

Darling, this is a very long way from my first go-round on the internet.  I know quite well of what I speak when it comes to troll foolishness.  When you set out to deliberately piss people off, as Robspierre did, that is the very definition of trolling.  The example you are talking about - the Dem trolls who pose as GOPers, is but one small subset of the species.

395 One of the more annoying results of the great concern troll invasion in the '08 campaign is calling anybody who goes against the grain once in a while a troll.

If you come here to debate politics or whatever stuff we're talking about and have a serious interest in conservatism or just shooting the shit, you're not a troll.

If you're just f'king with people, pretending to be conservative when you're not, or are incapable of reasoned thought when confronted with evidence against your beliefs (erg)--then you're a troll.  You can also be a dick (as in earlier in this thread), but while that it a common traits of trolls and will make you unpopular here fast, it doesn't necessarily mean you are a troll.

To some people being a cocksucker = being a troll

Again, I disagree.  We can't get too self-righteous here, this is the one corner of the internets that has been consistently open, vulgar and brutal to one another.  I'd hate to lose that by an enforceed conformity of opinion, even if it means trolls get more play here than other places.

Heh, I probably have posts in flamewar threads back in the bulletin board days that are older than some of you.

Your lame schtick certainly predates me.

"Flamewar"??! Fer f's sake, somebody call the FBI.

yeah, that's BS.   even accounting for something that allows the undead to maintain animation, the lungs still have to transport ennergy to cells for ADP/ATP synthesis.  No O2, no movement

O/T:  But from Hotair:

Insurgent Massachussetts Republican Senate candidate Scott Brown told CNN he expects to be installed quickly as MassachusettsÂ’ next senator should he win the stateÂ’s special election Tuesday.

Asked about the state of the race, Brown said he’s still campaigning as if he’s running “down 30 points.”

But sounding confident, the GOP state senator says heÂ’s made plans to travel to Washington Friday if heÂ’s victorious.

Scott Brown's got Big Brass Balls!  I love it!  A Republican with testicular fortitude!

To some people being a cocksucker = being a troll

Again, I disagree.

I just see it too much here.  Person A posts something offensive to Person B, so Person B shouts "Troll!"  It's the internet equivalent of labeling someone as "racist," to automatically de-value their argument so you don't have to argue against it.  It's lazy.

I'm going to watch "24" now and try to figure out how to record "Big Bang Theory."

Holy God. We are on the brink of something truly monumental and a few of you would rather piss and moan about what we're still doing wrong. Spew your negative bullshit somewhere else. Please for one or two days, will you?

450 I reserve the right to believe that robs is a troll, but labeling him one out of the gate just seemed  premature.

Really? Although I do think people get labeled troll too quickly, when a jackass who takes the moniker of a totalitarian murderous asshole and who can't spell worth shit decides his contribution to this thread will be "ace, your site sucks, and always has", that's pretty blatant trollery to me.

452 Don't necessarily disagree Waterhouse, but labeling him so after the first post is jumping the gun a bit IMAO.

Let him hang himself, as the case may be.  My only complaint is that it's become an almost involuntary twitch response here lately.

Your lame schtick certainly predates me.

Look, I don't give a shit about your need to define the term in a way that makes you happy.  We all know what trolls are, and we don't need a dictionary thread or a pedant.  I'm not sure why you want to continue the flames in support of that bullshit, but fine with me.  I've got to make dinner.

Waterhouse, you are loonier than Martha Coakley is.

Where did you read that my favorite poster, Ropspierre, said, "ace, your site sucks"?

Cut 'n paste it, or concede that you're a naughty, little fibber. Shame on you. Go to your room.

466 Where did you read that my favorite poster, Ropspierre, said, "ace, your site sucks"?

It's called paraphrasing, you monumentally-clueless fuck.

But to remind that goldfish brain of yours what you wrote, here you go:

Ace is posting only inane articles which won't spark any controversy. Interesting articles  on politics are now verboden. (But wait, wasn't that always the policy here?)

The first part, you insipid nincompoop, implies that the site sucks because ace only posts inane articles. The "wait, wasn't that always the policy here" implies that he always has, hence the site has always sucked.

And now, you ignorant galactically-stupid mush-brained blancmange of an imbecile, go get your fucking shine box.

Um, you took my words on of context. Why am I not surprised? You gotta be the slimiest of slimy low-lifes.

The Republican Party would win more elections if they could get rid of psychos like you. You aren't just nuts. You are certifiable. You are really mentally ill.

Posted by: CJ at January 18, 2010 05:08 PM (JQtNT)

471 Um, you took my words on of context.

Assuming you mean, "out of" context, then do tell, you whiny little bitch. There was precious little else to your comment, so unless you typed in invisible ink, or misspelled every fucking word (not unlikely, given how incredibly stupid you are), I took your drivel precisely in context.

Posted by: Waterhouse at January 18, 2010 05:17 PM (OUqZe)

472

Except for technology, yes, pretty much the same, CJ. Human nature has remained the same for thousands of years.

You know, on second thought, techology is regressing now, not advancing.

Three hundred years ago, the Dutch, Czechs and Spaniards were using windmills for a primitive power source, and just think; we're going back to them again here in the enlightened USA, instead of expanding on the use of nuclear energy.

Posted by: ^Correction^ at January 18, 2010 05:19 PM (ITzbJ)

Posted by: Ropspierre at January 18, 2010 05:23 PM (ITzbJ)

474 techology is regressing now, not advancing.

And your example is "windmills"?

That's the sum total of modern technology to you - wind turbines?

Really?

Posted by: Waterhouse at January 18, 2010 05:25 PM (OUqZe)

475 Still waiting for your explanation of "context", numbnuts.

Posted by: Waterhouse at January 18, 2010 05:26 PM (OUqZe)

Posted by: Ropspierre at January 18, 2010 05:28 PM (ITzbJ)

477 I hate to break it to you, chowderhead, but your post 480 is not an explanation of the "context" which you, a lying little weasel, claim I missed in your original post.

But then, I guess I shouldn't expect clear thinking or logic from the kind of fundamentally ignorant dumbass who thinks wind turbines represent the sum total of modern technology.

Posted by: Waterhouse at January 18, 2010 05:36 PM (OUqZe)

478

Since you obviously don't have a life, here is a research project for you.

Go back to the beginning of this thread, and read all of my posts. If you're studious, you'll discover that you made accusations which aren't supported by the facts, and that you're criticisms were bizarre, at best.. Not that I expect that you will be man enough to admit it..

Posted by: Ropspierre at January 18, 2010 05:57 PM (ITzbJ)

480 So, still no "context".

You see, I am actually giving you a challenge - to explain your "context" which you claim I missed and which therefore, uh, somehow makes me a mental patient and creepy.

You're just failing, despite opportunity after opportunity, to explain the context in which I should have taken your original post.

I'm beginning to suspect, Windmill Boy, that you may have no idea what the word "context" means.

Posted by: Waterhouse at January 18, 2010 05:58 PM (OUqZe)

481 Go to bed, all of you.  The grownups want to talk and drink and don't want to have to explain everything to you.

Read all of my posts. They'll answer all of your questions .... unless you're an imbecile.

Posted by: Ropspierre at January 18, 2010 06:04 PM (ITzbJ)

483 I agree. So, we make Republican the conservative party. That's what's happening now. Or, start a third party and never change a thing.

Well it has to be one of the two, but we have to pick and push for the one and be serious about it. We also have to realize this will take a long time, probably more than our lives have to offer. It took the left about 100 years to get us where we are; it will take decades to reverse that, if possible.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at January 18, 2010 06:18 PM (PQY7w)

484 I see there's still no explanation of "context" from LOLWindmillTard.

Posted by: Waterhouse at January 18, 2010 06:23 PM (OUqZe)

485

There is already a Conservative Party, or there used to be one, but it never got off the ground.

All Republicans are somewhat Conservative to one degree or another, and actually most Democrats are, too, though not to the degree that Republicans are.

This notion of converting the Republican Party into a strictly Conservative Party, or the notion of forming a third party that is strictly conservative is nothing new.

 It won't happen.

For better or for worse, I'll stick with the GOP, thank you.

P.S.

I noticed that a couple of the organizers of the Tea Baggers found it to be such a heady experience that they want to be elected to political offices themselves. That's fine, as long as long as they don't sleazily destroy the Republican Party to fulfill their own ambitions. I wouldn't trust their kind anymore than I would trust a Democrat. If they run as a third party candidate, their chances of winning are slim anyway.

Just turn it around. Say you're for being against crap.

So most of what government does is crap, right? Instead of saying you're against government, you just say you're for smaller government. Easy.

Late to this thread, Ace, but as far as I'm concerned, nothing wrong with letting people know where you stand and formulating your blog around that premise. It's yours.  People are free as the wind to read/participate or not to do so.

FWIW, where I personally draw the line is when you suppress/select newsworthy events or themes because an honest accounting might reflect a certain way upon a Party or its representatives, a way in which you would prefer people not know about.

That's what the MSM has done, and they have become partisan hacks, pure and simple. I have not seen any of this in your work for the time I've been following this blog (hat tip to Vic for the reco)  since Septemberish of 2008.

Keep up the good work, and keep calling em' without fear or favor.
