So, Walter, I guess good policy decisions should be based on how angry guys like you are about how much money other people are making....

To be honest, I don't give a flying f*ck about what marginal tax rate a rich guy pays.  That's because I know that the EFFECTIVE TAX RATE that the richest 1% of Americans pay has stayed nearly constant (at about 25%) over the course of the last 50 years, in spite of massively fluctuating marginal tax rates. 

Over the course of my tax-paying lifetime, I've paid an effective INCOME TAX rate of around 10% - so I guess I'm getting a bit of a deal as far as that particular tax is concerned.

The bigger issue - which I'm sure you'll miss - is the SIZE and EFFICIENCY OF GOVERNMENT.  Limit the size of government and you limit the amount of revenue needed to sustain it.  Limit the size of government and you ensure that private citizens have more freedom. 

Of course, freedom is intolerable to a leftist like yourself, I'm sure -  unless you're referring to "freedom from suffering the consequences of one's own actions."  Leftists are BIG on that type of freedom.

What is the purpose of having unions now other than to continually negotiate high wages and benefits and make it so you can't ever fire anyone.  That's all they do. It inflates the cost of union goods and services and makes it so they're not competitive. Union wages and benefits do not fit into the normal private sector wage and benefit structure. We'd all be better off without unions.

I am a teacher.  My parents were both teachers.  Two of my three brothers are teachers.

Being a teacher does not mean that a person needs to be a brainless, union-hack, know-nothing with zero understanding of basic economics.

Yes.  My job is meaningful and necessary in a free society, but being a teacher is NOWHERE near as important as being a soldier. 

As a teacher, I am reasonably compensated, and I have great healthcare.  I work hard, and I'm a good teacher, but I'm not so ignorant as to believe that I am irreplaceable. 

Our military, on the other hand, is absolutely necessary for the preservation of this republic, yet its members are generally poorly compensated and are forced to deal with the contempt of fools like yourself.

For the people who don't have such expenses, the problem isn't that they will "miss" the money so much as their behavior will change. So they'll take more time off instead of working harder or hiring more people, and unemployment will stay high. Why up your hours from 50 hours a week to 60, if there's nothing to show for it. He's a billionaire, and he parks his boat in Rhode Island to save on taxes, not because he'll "miss" the money, but because even an organism with only 5 ounces of actual human blood in him like Kerry will respond to these incentives. Also, those Goldman Sachs type millionaire are all Democrats to a man. Look at Geither and Paulson, not to mention Gates, Jobs, Ellison, Soros, Buffet and all the other moneybags. All Democrats. Democrats are the party of the super rich, because they no longer make their money off income, so income taxes don't affect them. In fact, being rich and being in favor of high taxes on the rich are an effective way of sending the social signal that you are so successful that you wont miss the extra $2 mil. In the Nietzschean struggle for status and power, demonstrating that you don't care about $2 million oddly may be worth more than $2 million itself to the upper crust. It's the same reason that they get a buzz out of losing 20 grand at Baccarat. If after losing 20 grand you shrug your shoulders and say, "Oh, well. Better luck next time," you have demonstrated your status, and that was worth more than the lost money. Higher taxes also provide a handy way for the super rich Democrat elite to pull up the ladder after themselves so that middle class people can't ever show up at their parties. Or as someone put it so eloquently, high income taxes ensure that the chairman of Goldman Sachs won't have to share the country club with the guy who invented the Sham-Wow.
