You might even be able to submit your numbers over the phone.

One huge problem is that illegal immigrants can and will report their numbers.  Though this helps Texas and Arizona a lot, it's also going to help the cities.  It's long past time that we have some kind of ID requirement for all government transactions.  Voting, Census, benefits, etc.

And by all means, leave question 8 blank and answer "Other: American" to Question 9.  They typically do not investigate or care once they get the number of people in your household.  This year, they can't keep up with it at all.

Of course, the thugs will do the tally and lie anyway, but fill out your forms.

I know they've been asking the race question for forever, but seriously it's about time they stopped classifying us by race. And, in relation to redistricting, the state governments use the racial information to gerrymander districts. How else can you explain people like Corrine Brown being in the House. She has little pockets of real-estate in her "district" spread out over 6 or 7 Florida counties. All of which are overwhelmingly minority communities. How it is legal to pick out the minority communities from six separate counties (communities which do not overlap geographically, BTW) and make that a district, I'll never know. But I do know they get that info from the census.

As I said before I found my great-grandparents on the 1900 census.  They had birthplace, education level, language spoken at home, whether the people spoke English, whether the couple was married, occupation, year of immigration, if applicable, etc.

In other words, this problem has gray hairs.  My great grandparents answered more questions than I did.  Which means the gubmint doesn't want to know the answers.  I find that disturbing in some way I can't articulate.

I was one of the lucky ones who received the "American Community Survey" from the Census Bureau a few months ago.  It was a lot more involved than the standard Census form.

Plus all the threatening phone calls from the rude Census people nagging me to send the thing in.

30 years ago our family got what was then called the long form and it was at least 25 pages. They wanted to know all sorts of crap like the square footage of the house, number of bathrooms, number of toilets, number of bedrooms, acreage, income for each resident, educational level of each resident -- and on and on. Filling it out was such a pain in the ass my parents just guessed at anything they didn't know.

The Constitution says that every inhabitant of the country except "Indians who are not taxed" must be counted.  It says nothing about citizens or non-citizens. It is not limited to people living in houses. (Oh, the 3/5ths rule in the original document regarding unfree persons was an anti-slavery measure, and as the civil war approached greatly resented in the South-- read up on the Kansas Nebraska Act, Dred Scott, etc.)

The count must be carried out quickly, which is why so many people were hired and trained. Some people only work a few days--one of  the better people I trained with last year had to give it up on the instructions of his doctor (We used our cars to reach the census blocks, but I had to walk a mile or two in each of the blocks that fellow would have worked in had he held out, on some of the hottest days of last spring.)

Last year we used hand held computers with GPS, sort of Blackberries that had been in development for much of the last decade, and showed it.  This year I heard they had been sold to China.  Given the governments proven inability tn wipe the data from its old computers, that does worry me.

Yes, if you do not send in your form, they will send an enumerator around to your house to ask you your name, sex, race, and age. You can decline to give your race (I mailed in "American.") however the law is clear and you cannot refuse to be counted, even if you are anonymous.

None of the information may be released for 72 years, except for statistical purposes, and then it goes to the National Archives.  Anyone who releases such info will (er, can) go to jail for five years and be fined $250,000.

Now, as to the people conducting the census.  None of the people I worked with were high school drop outs.   Last year my crew leader was a business woman suffering from the Obama economy.  This year my crew leader is a Korean War vet and ex-Marine (most of the men had been in the Army or Marines and were retirees.) My MA is in archaeology (stupid choice of fields-- you don't make money digging up dead people.)

Oh yes, the federal census is different from the municipal census forms sent around once a year here in MA--if you don't send the municipal form in you get tossed from the voter roles.

I answered questions 1, 2 and 10 since they dealt with enumeration (and I found a case where someone was fined per question). 

I will be quite comfortable, confident, and happy to argue (if I have to) that answering any of the other questions would have in fact been unconstitutional. After I point out that I did not complete the form prior to April 1st in spite of the Census Bureau's instructions and encouragement (nagging) to illegally do just that.

Well the whole idea of "race" is a social construct anyway. The biological concept of race is any taxonomic group that is capable of breeding.  All dogs are of the canine "race," for instance.

Since we know that all humans are capable of breeding with all other humans, then the idea of different "races" among humans is not valid.  There is only one race, the human race.

Here's another example:  what does Tiger Woods put down as his "race?"  I saw that supposedly his ethnicity is made up of 1/4 African American, 1/4 Thai, 1/4 Chinese, 1/8 Native American and 1/8 Dutch. 

Or, how about our Dear Leader who we know is the "first black President" when his mother was as white as anybody.

245 Since the Constitution specifically excludes Indians not paying taxes from the census and since most Mexicans have some Indian ancestors, it seems that the reluctance of many Hispanics to be counted in the census is based on a deep respect for our Constitution, at least if they are not making enough to pay income tax.
