Hey, You Know Who Seems To Like Sharron Angle? George Will
— DrewM

The most populist of major candidates in a populist year seems to charm the bow-tie wearing Dean of conservative opinion columnists!

Can a David Brooks endorsement be far behind?

When her son was depressed about having to repeat kindergarten -- "He was a 6-year-old dropout" -- she decided on home schooling, which Nevada law permitted. But a judge construed the law to require that parents who home-school must live at least 50 miles from a public school.

She and many kindred spirits descended on Carson City to get the Legislature to correct this. One legislator, irritated by such grass-roots impertinence, said, "If I'd known there would be 500 people here instead of 50 and it would take five hours instead of 30 minutes, I would have thrown it [the legislation] in my drawer, and it would never have seen the light of day." Angle asked a cowboy standing next to her, "Can he do that?" The cowboy said yep. She has been politically incandescent ever since.

Even when asked where she was born, she is on message: "I was conceived in Lovelock [Nevada] but -- if you're not pro-life -- I was born in Klamath Falls [Oregon]." During her four terms in Nevada's 42-seat Assembly, many votes were "41-to-Angle." She wears as a badge of honor having been voted Nevada's worst legislator, a disparagement she says is always bestowed on a conservative because the voters are members of the press and the political class (the legislators and their staff).

One can only conclude from this column she must like baseball and despise grown men who wear jeans.

Will is about as mainstream and establishment a conservative as you are going to find and he seems a bit smitten with Angle and her candidacy.

I know Will has fallen out of favor with some conservatives over the years, in part because of his opposition to the Iraq war but also as a long tenure in DC has become a liability in the modern media world. Still, for those of us of a certain age, there was a time before cable took off when Will was pretty much the only conservative fighting the fight on national TV. I don't think anyone would call him anti-intellectual or a populist, yet he's clearly intrigued with the most populist of the tea party candidates.

Right after he primary victory, Angle's website was a mess (it only had a donation link). It's since been updated.

Will fell out of favor with conservatives when he became more of a Lindsey Graham conservative and less of a Barry Goldwater conservative.

Does George wear a tux to the ballpark?  -eman

I went with the fam to the first night game of the year in Cincy, called "Opening Night".

All the ushers wore tuxedoes, or one of those faux tuxedo t-shirts.  Ditto the broadcasters, and there was a '40's style swing band performing on the Moon deck (in tuxedos) between innings. It was fun, but the Reds lost to the Cards.

Sometimes people do wear tuxedos to the ballpark.

If you've forgotten the 80's, George Will carried the banner of conservatism on Brinkley's "This Week", with the imbecile shouting man, Sam Donaldson playing the fool.  Brinkley was a down the line liberal in most cases, but he was also polite, intelligent and dignified, and recognized common sense when it appeared. Which sorta made him the last of his kind in TV.

However, I did just participate in the best.Tea.Party.evah.  Complete with shouting, insulting, name calling, sign stealing, trash throwing, unwashed libtards.  Thanks, libs.  You make our job so much easier!

If you're blue and you don't know where to go to
why don't you go where fashion sits,
Puttin' on the ritz.

Different types who wear a day coat, pants with stripes
and cutaway coat, perfect fits,
Puttin' on the ritz.

101 If you ask me, George Will is on week-to-week probation. Can't tell whether he simply perfected his act decades ago and refuses to learn from what's going on around him or is a disconnected squish.

At least I feel that way until I read an Ed Morrissey post. Then I'm sure Will is perceptive, consistent, conservative, right-on-track and is channeling Barry Goldwater.

102 He's usually squishy but he did give a good speech at CPAC this year.

I've turned the magneto on my horseless carriage and am preparing to explore the countryside! I packed a delightful picnic basket with roasted pheasant, buttered asparagus and sherry trifle!

Would anyone care to join me on my adventure?

104 I have taken to Asleep At The Wheel lately myself.

Bob Wills is the King.  There's no Asleep at the Wheel without Bob.

106 You can always count on George Will to give us relevant fashion tips that are completely on the money.  If this were 1935 that is.

A plot point in the Fred Astaire movie Swing Time (1936) has his friends drawing a cuff line on an illustration in Esquire magazine and then using that to convince Fred that he can't get married until he has his slacks cuffed to match the season's style.  The delay in getting in a tailor and getting the alteration done is enough to cause his bride to think he's left her at the altar -- the friends' plan works.

107 If you've forgotten the 80's, George Will carried the banner of conservatism on Brinkley's "This Week", with the imbecile shouting man, Sam Donaldson playing the fool.  Brinkley was a down the line liberal in most cases, but he was also polite, intelligent and dignified, and recognized common sense when it appeared. Which sorta made him the last of his kind in TV.

I remember Brinkley's "gaffe", I think it was the 1996 election coverage when he called Bill Clinton a "bore".  Personally, I thought he meant "boor" but I remember it was a huge firestorm.

109 There's no Asleep at the Wheel without Bob.

True, but a diet of 1940 vintage recordings does get old after a while.

If you haven't heard it yet try the Ride With Bob album by Asleep At The Wheel. It has a host of other country stars joining them to do old Bob Wills stuff.

Sadly I have to admit one of the best songs on the album is Roly Poly with the Dixie Chicks.

111 Obama's dinner with conservatives indicates that he is completing the job of detaching the conservative intellectual elite from the GOP itself.

He's welcome to them.

That way he'll have the full spectrum of the intellectual elites, all bundled up in one little doggy-poo bag.

113 George Will certainly has some establishment and elitism about him, but hell he is a real American patrician of the old school. Don't knock him for loving baseball to the insane degree he does; he loves it emotionally, intellectually, for being an American institution, blah blah blah. And he is quite conservative, in a different and older sense than a lot of people (and most conservatives on the web) do. He also writes in a way that requires you to precisely understand what he intends every word and phrase to mean or otherwise sometimes he just reads weird.

But he most certainly has his principles in the right place. And when he winds up and throws out his opinion, there is no one, no one right now, not even Krauthammer, who can more eloquently (whether in print columns in the papers or appearances on the television) tear apart both Obama and the whole rotten system of liberalism.

114 Oh, and the kind of intellectual, "establishment" conservative George Will is? We need more of those. A lot more. If the GOP was run by men with his philosophy, we wouldn't have invaded Iraq, but Afghanistan would have been won years ago and the country would be the economic envy of the world. And culturally, from rich to poor, whatever ethnicity or religion, better off as well. At least I think so.

Posted by: skwiself at July 05, 2010 03:54 PM (XvlZj)

115 Actually Will never said he despised men who wear jeans. He just said he thought wearing jeans all the time in every setting was a sign of immaturity and lack of respect for people. That they were work clothes, casual.

117 George Will managed to step outside his provincially myopic 30% 'highly educated whites' class to discover there are Americans who are far wiser than his gang of 'stuck on stupid' .

Here's is one of those 'baby steps' we can celebrate-the 'stuck on stupid' are still babies but at least Will was able to take a baby step in the right direction.

Perhaps Charles Krauthammer can-at some point-find the courage to stick his own snooty-toes out into the real world?

the media theme:

Angle is imperfect.  And we all know that imperfection is intolerable with anyone with an (R) behind the name.

Corrupt big-government entrenched liar Harry "This war is lost" Reid... his past sins are assets, you see.  Feel the virtue flow.

This fits right in with Biden's attempt to give Obama all the credit for success in Iraq.  Never mind the all the years that democrats like Biden said "the war was lost" and that Iraq was "Bush's war and a quagmire" etc...
