— Ace Thanks to Maetenloch, who's finding day posts when he's not doing the ONT, this tidbit...
Gallup reported that 37.4% of the people of the First State describe themselves as conservative — or nearly double the 19% who describe themselves as liberals. That gives conservatives an advantage of 18.4%.
That is a bigger advantage than conservatives enjoy in Maine, where both senators are Republicans.
The Blue Hen State is redder than California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, Washington state and Wisconsin — states where Republicans are either favored or competitive in the Senate races.
My reaction to that is that "conservative" is a label people embrace, even when not terrifically conservative, and "liberal" is a label people run from, even when actually quite liberal. A lot of people call themselves "moderates." In practice this tends to mean "liberal but I don't want to think of myself as a liberal," just as Bill Maher used to call himself "libertarian."
However, that's a common phenomenon, and Surber puts this split into context by comparison with other states. In every state, liberals call themselves "moderate," but if Delaware is actually more conservative-friendly than purple Colorado and New Hampshire, okay, it's possible.
Most of the other states he mentions get a blank reaction from me: Okay, it's redder than Illinois. And? I sure the hell wouldn't run a deep-red candidate there.
Little by little I am retreating from my former position of This was a grotesque own-goal unforced error and into the position of Okay, not what I would have advised, but if you want to roll the dice, I guess one in six is a gambler's chance.
Chris Matthews Says "I Bet O'Donnell Wins:" Gambling metaphors all over the place. Matthews wants to know how many points David Corn will give him for picking O'Donnell.
Well, look: The great Adam Baldwin asked me if there would be apologies forthcoming should O'Donnell actually win. Of course. To actually sneak in a dark-red senator into a blue state for four years would be, well, humungous is the word that comes to mind.
Update: Really an update to the last post, but you morons are too moronic to look past the top post.

Thanks to BillCo.

Because on Christmas Eve of this year, politicians in DC voted to steal GENERATIONS of earning from our families and voted to steal our private healthcare. ON CHRISTMAS EVE, that is how much of a slap in the face it was.
Not to mention TARPS, bailouts, and stimulus.
And now we have to navel gaze about why some Americans are upset at everyone in DC that let this happen?????????????
We should have sacked that place, and hung every damn one of them, they are lucky we did not.
So are we soooooo civilized, and cynical now that because the unwashed rise up, we have to automatically marginalize them because they ARE the unwashed?
Or is it still the Beta male mentality....don't rock the boat, don't make waves because it's unseemly?
And are we saying that unremarkable, careful men who avoid risks and confrontation, are to remain our standard-bearers?
That's crap!
Maybe this is what DE telling us?
That they (and we) want to get rid of the old who have put us here?

"Conservative" Delawarians elected Joe-freekin'-Biden, you know.
Did the poll -- aaargh, another poll, for fuck's sake -- ask for or supply definitions of "conservative," "moderate" or "liberal?"
I'm sure ace is "liberal" when it comes to cranking out post headlines that shock the waiting-to-be-offended crowd, "moderate" when it comes to packing his Murder Kit when he leaves his cubicle, "conservative" in his politics.
Ask me which one I am, and I'll give you a different answer depending on whether the subject is yentzing, drinking or voting.

This is what I think a lot of the pro-Castle folks are missing: the Tea Party folks aren't uncompromising, scorched-earth, all-centrist-Republicans-must-go purists. If they were, they wouldn't have gotten behind Scott Brown. Brown is about as good as the GOP can do in Massachusetts. The Tea Party is fine with him, despite his occasional liberal votes. Better than some Kennedy, that's fer shur.
But Castle? Castle is just too far left. If he was a Scott Brown type, the Tea Party would be fine with him, but he's Arlen Specter at best.
Is O'Donnell perfect? Of course not. But had Delaware and the establishment GOP not been such dicks with forcing Castle on the state, there would have been enough time and optimist to recruit a Scott Brown type.

Lifetime 52% ACU. But howÂ’s he done recently; say post 2000? HowÂ’s he trending?
2000 68% Â… not solid, but not badÂ… election year.
2001 48% Â… More against than for.
2002 76% Â… pretty good. And an election year.
2003 40% Â… Solid Democrat.
2004 52% Â… barely conservative, election year.
2005 28% Â… Serious Democrat
2006 52% Â… barely conservative, election year.
2007 20% Â… beats quite a few Democrats there.
2008 28% Â… I guess he didnÂ’t have a hard election challenge?
2009 56% Â… Senate election, or just breaking the pattern?
(if you want to double-check my numbers, they're from here)
http://tinyurl.com/2dkc8hm
Now since the Senate only has elections every 6 years; lets re-run those numbers. Figure 5 years at 38.4 and 1 year at 55.2 gives us an estimate that we can count on his vote about 41% of the time?
Or just look at his trend over time. Averaging his last 6 years (3 terms) listed (2004-2009) heÂ’s got a 39.3. Any reason to suspect he'd have changed that in the Senate? I can see justifying a claim he'd do worse (not up for reelection every other year) but how do you justify a claim he'd do better?
....
I'm supposed to feel bad that he lost? Should I mourn Ben Nelson of Nebraska (D) as well should he lose (as polls indicate he may) in 2012?
I get running "RINO" in states that won't support the "dark red" candidate or whatever. But running a guy who is likely to maintain a less than 40% support for your side, and quite possibly under 30%?
Ok, now I see why people were so opposed to him. If a Democrat ran 70-80% ACU ratings I'd seriously consider supporting him/her; and this he/she was in the wrong party. Running 20/30 as a Republican seems about the same, no?
Sorry about the "wall of text". I really like numbers.
Posted by: Gekkobear at September 16, 2010 11:42 AM (JLl7h)
But how else to explain these numbers?
My guess is that most people are fiscally conservative, in theory if not in practice. Depending upon the issue of the day--and plainly the IOD is fiscal--they will tend to respond in that context. Which is, I think, why a lot of real conservatives like Mitch Daniels suggest staying off the non-fiscal issues and boring in on the unholy mess we've made of our finances.
I agree with with Mitch Daniels here.

And she gave that lecture to MTV children and young adults. She was not being a spokesman/lady for a government office.

The thing about conservatives (note: little 'c') is that they tend to be the kind of folk who keep their heads down, don't rock the boat, etc., etc. What I believe has happened these last two years is that their (our, really- I used to be one) perceptions of the world have finally been shaken enough that we woke up, took a look around, and gave a great, collective WTF?! Thus, when asked, most people _are_ conservative, because most people believe in things like a balanced budget, personal liberty, etc.
I hate to use the terms of the intelligentsia, but it really is a so-called "preference cascade."

This area is critical. It has a large population, and can and has elected some Republican Congressmen and legislators. But politicians like Biden and Carper have scored well here, aided by the constant adulation from the News Journal and the office holder/name recognition advantages. Chris Coons is te County Council executive here, so he does have some name recognition, but county offices are not the big thing, and he never developed the following that his predecssors did. If she can woo back some of the vote that went for Obama?Biden in 2008, then she can do it. if Castle endorsed her, or better yet stumped for her, she could seize this.
Urban Wilmington is a lock for the Dems, with little exception.

He had a minor stroke earlier this year and he's running -- unopposed -- for re-election to the state Attorney General's office.
However, when he bowed out of running for the Senate seat, his reasoning was that he would remain AG to deal with a well-publicized (in DE) case of a pedophile doctor in Sussex County. To abruptly change the office for which he is running this fall would leave him open to accusations of rank opportunism and being a quitter.

It's like the "overdrive" button that jap cars put on their shifters in the 80's
*GRUNT* Reason want talk car stuff now. Yes.
Actually it did serve a function. It basically toggled whether or not the four-speed automatic transmission would upshift into 4th or stay in 3rd. 3rd gear was generally a 1:1 ratio; 1 and 2 were larger gears on the "wheels side" (wheels turn slower than the engine's revs), 3rd was equal, and 4th was a larger gear on the engine side (overdrive).
Now, the usefulness of this level of control is definitely questionable... It was on my first car in HS, and on my second car in college (both import automatics), and generally I would use it for passing on the highway if I didn't want to mash the accelerator and wait for the transmission computer to "think" and "interpret" my input.

DE has had quite a few Repub Senators, so it's not like they always vote for the democrat. Good ole Joe may have held that seat since the dinos roamed, but the other Senate seat has bounced back and forth.
And, a lot of Repubs never liked Castle. They voted so heavily for O'Donnell, because it gave them a chance to get rid of his ass. For years, he ran uncontested for the house seat.
We have a chance in DE.

Because that implies they're eventually going to want to propose legislation on it and that just seems like nothing but trouble.
Well, you have to remember, that was at a time when Clinton was getting blown in the Oval Office and Jocelyn Elders was telling the young'uns that they should be spankin' it more often. So it actually was a topic that was part of the national zeitgeist of the time.

If Clinton had shown a bit more D-I-Y self-reliance, it would have avoided a very messy episode in American political history.

Seriously though, there are a hell of a lot of us in IL and we're no less conservative.
But you got people like me.
If you don't run a deep red con here, I won't get off my ass to vote.
And another Judy Bar Topinka goes down in flames.
A lot of people I know - with no prompting from me - regular, not super political people, not people who read blogs, left the Gov slot on the ballot blank.
I didn't leave it blank ... because I didn't vote at all.
It can happen in IL.
But in terms of GOTV the conservatives could NOT be more depressed, and the Party could not possibly be more incompitent and aimless.

My wife went to an all girls Catholic high school which had the dubious distinction of being #1 in Philly (at the time) with the highest percentage of unwed mothers. Apparently, at that time, the Catholic schools thought that any knowledge of sex was a bad thing. She was amazed that I had 'sex ed' in high school and knew the things I knew. I really behaved myself with girls I had no serious interest in because of that knowledge.
I really can't figure out what effect the exposure to x-rated material on the internet is going to have on sex with the new generation, but the birth rate has declined since Obama took office. It seems almost contradictory.

So ... all you morons who've been giving Delaware the beatdown this past week can make of this what you will:
The highest point in Delaware is located in a trailer park.
It is a speed bump in said trailer park.

It is about how people see themselves..and that can be quite deceptive.
Anything is possible, but I doubt if O'Donnell can win not only because Deleware is a blue state, but because she has so much strange stuff in her back ground. Now, if someone like Larry Kudlow had gotten the nomination in a year like this, it would have been easier for that kind of fiscal conservative to win.
Posted by: Terrye at September 16, 2010 12:58 PM (Pr8hY)
The establishment wants Odonnell to lose because Odonnell is a poor mans Palin. A weak, extreme version of Palin. And if Odonnell can beat a "moderate establishment republican" in the primaries and go on to win in November in DELAWARE, the unelectability argument goes out the window against Palin. And that is the Romney-Bush factions number 1 argument. So Rove and others tried to stop and destroy Odonnell. One Senate seat pales in comparison to stopping Palin.
This is why Tingles was so sad yesterday on his show Hardball. Its why the others on the show were pumping up Romney. Yet Tingles could see the handwriting on the wall. The Republicans have an anti-establishment Revolution going on and that means no to Romney.
I am not saying Palin will definately win. I am saying that if they try to shove Romney down our throat it will utterly fail. And trying to stealthly push Daniels won't work either. How many wil he run or won't he articles have they written already? And no ammount of endorsements from Haley or Demint or Christie or whoever will make a hill of beans worth of difference.

Cause voting is for fags?
Yes, as a matter of fact. I always thought those Vote or Die campaigns were riduclously gay.
Look:
Where do you want to eat dinner?
I don't care, wherever.
If all the candidates suck - pick your poison. Let someone who gives a shit decide.
Why should I piss in their punch when I'm going to be unhappy either way?
SOMEONE might as well win.
Yet you come here and complain and opine on how others should vote.
What's your point bub?
1st ammendment.
Sides.. I don't. I'll opine on anything. I WOULD vote if I could in some of these races.
I don't complain or tell other people how they must vote.
You vote however you damn well please.
I repeat: You vote however you damn well please.
I will vote how I damn well please.
That's the point. Bite me.
But... if I'm just going to write in Batman and snicker, why pull jury duty? Why get off the couch? Same dif.
Especially since, as a matter of rational fact - there has never been an election I've been eligible to vote in that was decided by less than several thousand votes. So seriously... we've come back to the masturbation issue.
I have however, donated cash.
And I've done the MOST important thing, which is bitch on the internet.
Don't like it? Give me someone I want to vote for. End of story.

The only one I remember who tried to "destroy" him was Huckleberry. I will go out on limb here now and say that unless things change with the "leadership" it will be considered "his turn" in 2012 and they will push him.
They did not fix the shit primary rules that allow RINOs to get off to a head start and they did not fix the winner take all rules after the first few primaries.
If they do succeed in getting him the nod in 2012 we will have 4 more years of Obama and the Republican Party will become a fringe 3rd Party like the Libertarians.

I've lived in DE for several decades and here are a couple of quick impressions/sound-bites.
Joe F*^%*#$ Biden is not really considered all that liberal here by many. He's simply a loyal Democrat who's paid his dues.
The newspaper of record would make the NYT proud. In addition to an E.J. Dionne hit piece, the local editorial today said "Some 30,000 Republicans have embarassed the dickens out of the state of Delaware by voting for a candidate who has no chance of winning the general election, is a verifiable liar and cheat with no known means of employment...yada, yada." And it got nastier as it went on.
At a social gathering this Saturday I had to excuse myself from a large group when the comments moved to the obligatory five minute Bush hate where people riffed on how dumb Bush is/was, how at least now we have a president who can operate a computer, etc., etc. This stuff is not the exception; if you go to a group gathering in northern DE, it is the general rule. (Sure, you can resist/lash out, but any good humor in the room will be over and out. I know, I've trashed a couple of dinner parties when I decided I'd heard enough and was tired of listening to the drivel. But it makes for a real subdued rest of the evening.)
Most people I know who think and act basically as conservatives have a few liberal quirks. Like, they hate high taxes and spending, but favor gun control. Or hate the war in Iraq. Or, as far as immigration goes, "Walls aren't the answer."
An outspoken Republican say, someone who headed the R party in the State at one time is normally considered a nutjob or eccentric crank by the elite. Joe Biden or someone of his ilk gets a pass.
In decades of business, encompassing dozens of dinners/gatherings/networking mixers, I can count on one hand the situations where I have felt that conservatives comprised more than a handful of the people in the room.
That's a quick take. I wonder if those polls really captured northern Delaware. To me it has the same tone as suburban Philly with thousands of well to do social liberals who voted for Obama, or the northern NJ burbs with the huge block of soccer moms who thought Clinton and Obama were all that.
