Holiday Recipe Thread II
— LauraW

Hope I'm not stepping on Gabe's toes here, but Christmas is just a week off.

It's important to get your meal prepped pretty far in advance. You may even have to drive around with it in your car for a while to tenderize it properly.

The animal was found in a liquid mixture of oil, crushed pepper, salt and other ingredients, and Korkuc told police it was in preparation for a meal.

The cat, a male, survived. Several baths cleaned him of the concoction, and he seemed to be in good health otherwise, said Erie County SPCA spokeswoman Gina Browning.

The image of police opening a car trunk to find 'Mr. Puffy' mewing, hogtied, in a roasting pan surrounded with peeled carrots and onions, springs unbidden to mind.

Is this fellow being psychologically evaluated? I wish the writer would have mentioned that. Soaking a cat in oil and salt seems just slightly crazy. You're supposed to use fruit juice and inject it.

In yet another journalistic lapse, the article says that several people volunteered to take the cat, but fails to mention what the sides were.

5 Wait, he was marinating the cat, with the fur still on the cat? That's just crazy, how is the cat going to get any flavor with the hair soaking it all up, plus as soon as you put the cat under the broiler to crisp up, that hair is going light up like a Christmas tree at Walmart the day after Halloween. And the smell, damn it would take weeks to clear it out.

24 I just posted this on the fb thread because I didn't see this new thread.  This has nothing to do with Christmas, or food, but it does deal with winters and turkeys:

OT (global warming flashback):

Nat'l Geographic:
No Winter by 2105? New Study Offers Grim Forecast for U.S..........
By ROBERT F. KENNEDY Jr (Sept. 200: In Virginia, the weather also has changed dramatically. Recently arrived residents in the northern suburbs, accustomed to today's anemic winters, might find it astonishing to learn that there were once ski runs on Ballantrae Hill in McLean, with a rope tow and local ski club. Snow is so scarce today that most Virginia children probably don't own a sled. But neighbors came to our home at Hickory Hill nearly every winter weekend to ride saucers and Flexible Flyers.

In those days, I recall my uncle, President Kennedy, standing erect as he rode a toboggan in his top coat, never faltering until he slid into the boxwood at the bottom of the hill. Once, my father, Atty. Gen. Robert Kennedy, brought a delegation of visiting Eskimos home from the Justice Department for lunch at our house. They spent the afternoon building a great igloo in the deep snow in our backyard. My brothers and sisters played in the structure for several weeks before it began to melt. On weekend afternoons, we commonly joined hundreds of Georgetown residents for ice skating on Washington's C&O Canal, which these days rarely freezes enough to safely skate.
...........
"Global warming is like, year on year, giving a small push toward warmer winters," explained Gavin Schmidt, a climate scientist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York

...

Funny, but know when you Google global warming means warmer winters (or any variation) it is hard to find any article where activists warn of warmer winters.  I guess they all fell down the worm hole.  Thanks Google!

I saw an article about the case when the guy was first arrested in August for animal cruelty. The cat had all its fur-- he is a beautiful tuxedo cat that Korkuc had originally named Navarro and has been renamed Oliver by his new family.

FWIW, link here: http://tinyurl.com/26d47py

Korkuc is one seriously weird hobo wannabe: "Korkuc insisted he was 'not crazy' in an interview with a local news reporter, claiming the male cat had 'miscarried' and it was sitting in its blood."

The only realistic chance we have of overturning Obamacare or at least SOMETHING to that effect would be if vulnerable Democrats in red states pulled a DINO and offered to work with the Republicans on scaling it back in the Senate. With 2012 around the corner, that stands a very real possibility.

Our check from closing on the house arrived... apparently yesterday.  It sat out on the stoop all day and all night in the rain.  (Stupid FedEx delivery being.)  Fortunately, the ink didn't run.

Of course, we took a bath on the house - plus will be getting taxed up the wing wang this year - but there is a psychological boost to getting a check, even if the money was spent long ago.

Recipe-wise, here's a simple one that's quite good if you give it a try.

Creamed onions
1 jar pearl onions (Aunt Nellie's... I've never used anything else, nor have I gone through the horror of peeling cioppilino onions, or whatever the heck they're called - at least not for this recipe, I have for others)
~3/4 cup milk or cream
1 TBSP (give or take) butter
1 TBSP (give or take) flour
salt
pepper
chives (dried ok)
parsley (dried ok)

Make a roux by heating the butter and adding the flour.  Cook a couple of minutes.  Add the milk or cream to the roux over medium or medium-high heat.  Stir (whisk is good) to remove lumps.  Simmer a few minutes until thickened.  Add drained onions.  Warm in cream sauce for a few minutes.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Garnish with fresh parsley and chives -- or add in the dried herbs toward the end of cooking.

Posted by: Y-not at December 19, 2010 01:19 PM (IDL9N)

86 Speaking of fruit cake, Meduri sells the best dried fruits in the world.  They are truly stellar... and bear virtually no resemblance to dried fruits you've had before.  Beware, however, because the process they use makes the fruit more like candy than like fruit.  They aren't "candied", but they are preserved in a way that I think uses sugar and other things to keep them soft and fresh.

Posted by: Y-not at December 19, 2010 01:22 PM (IDL9N)

87 now if only Lieberman can be persuaded to join the GOP...

Aside from national defense and one or two other issues, Lieberman is about as liberal as they come.

105 I heard Lieberman on 1080 years ago, talking about how successful a program Social Security was.

The evidence he cites for it being a tremendously successful program? The huge numbers of seniors who absolutely depend on it to get by, or even depend on it entirely as their sole source of (utterly inadequate) income.

Impoverished dependency = successful program

I also see none flipping right now due to them currently having power and not wanting to give up their position in the majority.

Since he voted no, they all stayed nos as well- and it was the DEM No's that ended up killing the bill). So who knows. The gays hate their fathers for two reasons Either they were mistreated or they were ignored/abandoned.

Their mothers become saints. They want to be like their mothers, not be like their fathers.

They want to act like their mothers -- which means acting feminine, being drama-queens, and having intimate relationships with men.

194 198 It's hard to see how anyone can reconcile devotion to Hillary Clinton with adoration of Sarah Palin. Aside from being the same sex, what's the connection?

Perhaps when they see Sarah savaged in the MFM, they think of how their original "savior" Hillary was given the short end of the stick by the DNC, and thus have transferred their devotion from Hillary to Palin.

I'm not discounting the possibility that they simply have a superficial desire to see a woman, any woman, become President as a potential reason for this contradiction.  Silly yes, but haven't sillier Cults of Personality emerged from the ooze of American politics?  (We have an inept, man-child President because of such a Cult - do not discount their power.  And so did the Kennedy's).

Heard a story on the police blotter on the radio about a stripper whose father came to her place of business and threatened to blow it up with a pipe bomb he broght along.  Nobody was hurt, but the story made a big deal of saying that the young woman was embarassed.

Yes, the stripper was embarassed.  By her father.  No word on how the father felt about having a filthy whore for a daughter.

When homosexuals have pretend sex with each other, it's about hurting their fathers.

Teryaki Salmon:

Mix 2/3 cup soy sauce, 1/2 cup med-dry sherry, 2 crushed garlic cloves, 2 tsp. grated ginger root and 1tbl spoon sugar in a sauce pan. Bring to a boil while stirring then let cool in the refer.

Marinate 1 lb of delicious King Salmon in it for about an hour.

Cook on the grill with the skin side down for 10 to 15 minutes. Don't over cook and scoop most of the coals away from being directly underneath the fish.

that's it, serve with some white wine and val u right shots.

Yes it could potentially cause the more weak-willed amongst these people to lose their sanity.  On the other hand, having perfect recall can give these people a tremendous advantage in data processing and synthesis.  I wonder what these people do for careers and such?

It brings up another questions too.  For starters, how much information can the brain store?  Do we all have brains that record everything like an endless recorder and only a few unique individuals can recall everything at will?  Or is it only these particular individuals have the "endless recorder" ability while the rest of us have more limited "space" so to speak?

And coming back to my first statement, is there a trade-off?  Does one have the ability of perfect recall at the expensive of data analysis and synthesis?

Breakfast for dinner. Cook that up with some eggs, pancakes and some maple syrup and you're all set. Also it's good in beans and rice.

I caught a whiff of a woman's perfume last weekend that took me back to a girl I dating over 15 years ago.

Every once in a while, throughout my life, I'd catch a whiff of something that was very familiar. I couldn't even tell where the smell had come from, so I had no chance of identifying it.

Eventually I had kids and bought A and D oinment for diaper rash.

And that was the smell.

All in all, I like your story better!

282 @298: let me give you a fast Czech recipe.

Cook one full bag of bowtie eggnoodles.

Cut the ham - I guess about 1/4 pound of it - into small cubes, and lightly fry them.  Simmer a handful of portobello mushrooms until reduced.  Fry one half of a diced onion until glassy.

Combine the all the ingredients in a casserole, along with about a cup of Parmesan cheese, a teaspoon of salt, pepper to taste, and 4 whole eggs (previously whipped).

Bake at 400 degrees for about 40 minutes.

Called in Czech "Shoonkey Flecky," or literally "ham chunks."  It's sort of a noodle and ham quiche, when you come down to it.  But yummy, especially with a crunchy dill pickle.

That's my initial thought-- this is one end of the autism spectrum.  I'm probably mild undiagnosed aspburger's and there's some random shit I have encyclopedaic memory of

Assburgers.

I have something similar to superior autobiographical memory.  (Event memory, as opposed to, say, symantic memory.) But it's definitely not the thing you hear about on TV where someone can tell you what they were doing at 4:29 p.m. 17 years, three months, and four days ago.

I think there are different types of "thinking ways" that are yet to be classified.  In my case, I'm what I'd call hyper-rational, which leads to frustration with inconsistency, lying, and stupidity (including my own).  Yoked with reliable intuition*, it becomes DEW line rationality radar.

*Everybody has intuition.  Less than a quarter of the population should listen to it; about six percent should rely upon it, and about one percent should live by it.  Roughly speaking, according to Meyers & Briggs.

298 308 Listening to the radio play Christmas songs

One (ok, another) thing I'm liking here in Utah is that the radio stations are really good about playing Christmas songs.  I think they started a couple of weeks ago.  Some of the places I've lived don't do it until the night/day before.

Speaking of which, a neighbor sings in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and had a couple of extra tickets so we got to go to the Sunday performance.  Guest performers were David Archuleta (nice voice) and Michael York (boy, has he aged).  Very nice performance, but I still think the best choir I've ever heard was the Cathedral Choir at St. Paul's in London.  But they also have the advantage of singing in a place with very "church-y" acoustics, which I love.

yeah, the memory is a funny thing.

I get wicked flashbacks from time to time. Usually set off by smell.

What people mean when they say "event memory" is typically memory associated with some momentous event--where you remember where you were, what you were wearing, the weather, the time, everything.  Then you get a range of people like me who have this type of memory attached to virtually any non-momentous event as well.  Like that gas receipt I got in Amarillo where I bought that silly-assed bottled tapwater my friend was so impressed by.  The extreme types, those with superior autobiographical memory, could tell you what the water was called, the date, etc.  I can tell you about the size of the bottle and the design of the label, that's it.

Kaus had a piece in Newsweek (I know, I know!) about how the defeat of the DREAM act can be laid with Christine O'Donnel, Joe Miller, and the Tea Party.  Even if Castle would have won a general election, the fact that conservatives were willing to put a primary fight and throw out a Republican who got too squishy scared a lot of the Repubs in the Senate.

320 @331: yeah, I bet Michael York is pretty old now, too.  ALL the actors we remember from the 80's are getting old... most of them just dropped out of sight quietly, without our noticing - just stopped making movies and appearances.  I guess they want to be remembered as they were in their heyday.  I kind of wish Harrison Ford would take the hint and stop making Indiana Jones movies.  He's just embarrassingly too old for them.  Spielberg  should just find a younger actor to take over the role.

335 Michael York is 68.

I have to say, he looked much older than that, mostly because he's developed really heavy eyelids.  You could barely see his eyes.  He needs some sort of surgery to correct it.

I wasn't crazy about his performances.  One was Luke's nativity story which honestly was done better in the Charlie Brown Christmas Special.  The other kind of wasn't his fault -- it was an odd piece, an overly dramatic story about how the Mormon Tabernacle Choir came about.  Not the best material.

I confess I warmed up to him when they brought his wife out at the end.  How many Hollywood types - and he was something of a heart throb in his day - are married 42 years?

363 Stuic, I think they need cloture to bring it to a vote.

Posted by: rdbrewer at December 19, 2010 08:52 PM (j+QX3)

I believe they need cloture on any debates over amendments, but not specifically a cloture vote to bring the treaty to a final vote.  That is, if Reid had not allowed amendments to be considered but demands a final vote right away, there would have been no need to hold a separate cloture vote.

However, I see that the Senate has been considering amendments today and so there will need to be a cloture vote to cut off debate.

377 On the heels of the Brockobitch story a few nights ago..

New study of drinking water in 35 U.S. cities finds that most contain hexavalent chromium - Washington Post http://wapo.st/fmTRut

Even if the study is true, so what?  All natural water contains traces of heavy metals.  The real question is if the amount of hexavalent chromium present in the water is hazardous to human health.   All data collected on hexavalent chromium thus far indicates this metal is only carcinogenic if inhaled, not ingested.

And this study is using the Cali standard,
0.06 parts of hexavalent chromium per billion, to determine if the city water is "safe".  What was the scientific basis for setting this particular amount?

Sparge 10 lbs of horse grain the usual way.
Code for taking over wifeys kitchen and making a complete mess of her pots and pans.

Boil wort for 30 minutes
and 4 oz molasses
and 16 oz unrolled oats
boil another 30 minutes

proof yeast.
Didn't have brewers yeast, try bakers.

Wait for optimal temperature.
Siphon wort in primary fermenter.

Dry hop when I can go find some.

Will let you know how the barn yard holiday brew turned out in 4-6 weeks.
