— Geoff The Department of Labor released the weekly unemployment claims report. Not only did they revise last week's awful report up (from 479K to 482K), but this week's report is even worse. 484,000 people filed initial unemployment claims last week [click to embiggen]:

1st Prize: A Recovery Summer!! 2nd Prize: 2 Recovery Summers!!
UPDATE: Morrissey notes that the prediction was for 465K, and only has to look as far as Reuters to find that 484K was 'unexpected.'
[A leetle more technical discussion below the fold. There is math in this post.] Since I started breaking up the initial claims data into pre- and post-November 2009, the slope of the post-Nov data has flattened and flattened and flattened. It started around -120 claims per day, but has now dropped to...

Yeah, -48/day (the number next to the "x" in the formulas in the boxes is change in claims per day). We were getting well to the tune of -560 claims per day in the Mar09-Nov09 timeframe. Now we're healing at less than a tenth of that rate.
At this rate (-48/day), getting to 400K claims per week will take us 4 1/2 years.
Maybe we should be talking about a "Recovery Decade."

IF the Israeli/US Western alliance does not attack Iran’s burgeoning by the end of this month, the odds will then increase that the attack will come the week after US elections and that, in turn, sets up a kind of slow-motion chain-reaction (poor choice of words, I admit, given the topic area) which will result in global thermonuclear war lite for 2½ months in 2011.
(This was tied to market projections.)

Not sure why people who know what they're talking about (presumably) always point to new unemployment claims as the prime indicator. Shouldn't we look at the change in U6?
It's not the "prime indicator." But it's updated weekly, rather than monthly, so you get an idea of how employment is doing between U3/U6 reports. Last week we looked at the U3 report and at total employment (U3 being the media's favorite number). U6, in any case, has become an unreliable statistic due to the large numbers of people leaving the labor market entirely.

We also need card check! We must allow union thugs to intimidate how people vote in union elections. Unions will be poised to take over, and all of our jobs can move overseas. The corrupt democrat/election rigging/union circle jerk will be complete. Call it "free choice". You will be free to make your "choice", just make sure you "choose" correctly while the union thug stands over your shoulder. mmmkay.

If you move your inflection point to Feb. 2010 (instead of Nov. 2009), the trend is UP.
I picked November because that is when the "goodness-of-fit" of the data from March peaked. That is, I stopped the March-November fit when the data started to deviate from the line.
BTW, Geoff, where is your famous chart, updated for July's unemployment number?

How is Obama's mortgage program doing? Not so good:
. . . the original Hamp programme has a ‘success rate’ of about 32 per cent — that is, about a third of the trial mortgage mods begun will be successfully converted to permanent ones, and won’t redefault.

Hell, if you move it close enough, it's just a point.
If you're going to look at very short-term trends, you also have to throw out the latest observation with the constant (unexpected) downward revisions of prior year numbers.
I see that chart the same way Geoff does. A clear downward trend followed by a flattening. Point oscillations around these trendlines are themselves trendless.

California can't pay bills -- may use IOUs for August payments...
State Controller John Chiang said Tuesday that without a state budget, California's government would be unable to pay its bills in late August (or maybe early September). That means issuing IOUs to some people. Possible dates for IOUs could be either Aug. 27 or Aug. 31, when big payments to schools are due, according to this schedule on the controller's website.http://drudge.tw/a94m9e

Remember that Obama's actual goal is for that slope to have a steep downward (negative) slope. It's hard to communize a country when employment is high. You want repeated events like the one reported from Atlanta yesterday. Only then will there be riots for government "stash" which will push the country all the way over.

The Dodd-Frank bill isn't a month old, and Obama is ALREADY using it to turn your tax $$ into a bailout. http://herit.ag/qFx
On July 21, when President Barack Obama signed the Dodd-Frank financial regulation bill, he promised: “There will be no more taxpayer-funded bailouts. Period.” How long will this Obama promise last? Well, The New York Times reports today that “the Obama administration on Wednesday pumped $3 billion into programs intended to stop the unemployed from losing their homes,” including a program announced by the Department of Housing and Urban Development that “will draw on $1 billion authorized by the new financial overhaul law.” That’s right. The Dodd-Frank "no more taxpayer-funded bailouts forever" bill is not even a month old, and already President Obama is using it to turn your tax dollars into yet another bailout.
And why is the Obama administration turning to Dodd-Frank bailout funds so soon after passage? Because its original mortgage bailout plan, the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), has been a complete failure.

From the comments section of the that article. jancf writes:
And Christians don't believe theirs is the only true religion? Who else but Christians invade countries all over the world to try to make people believe like them? The Koran is no more violent than the Bible. Try studying it through the eyes of a scholar, not a tabloid.
Yep, only Christians invaded other countries. Muslim armies never once invaded the Middle East, North Africa, Europe or Asia. Islam spread by word of mouth.

I use the Cavuto method of judging the economy which works very well for local interests. That is the drive by of the local mall and restaurant row.
If the mall and the restaurant's parking lots are normal, the economy is doing fine. Conversely, if the parking lots are empty or near empty, the economy is in the shit.
Monday I had to drive over to "the city1" for blood work at my cardiologist. After the blood work wifey and I went by the "I need to go off diet today" IHOP which is located in the same area as the mall.
The IHOP was busy but that is normal in the morning. The mall parking lot was virtually empty. Couldn't tell about the other restaurants because they don't open until 4 pm.
My guess is that the local economy is shit.
1 - not to be confused with "the city" that ace lives in. I just though I would start calling our local big town that because when I lived in Saratoga Springs that was the common name for NYC.

Look, Muslims did great things in the middle ages. There contribution to math, science and philosphy cannot be undertstated. But almost all of their accomplishments ended centuries ago. We can't rewrite our history to fit some school teachers perception of diversity.
I honestly cannot not name one major accomplishment or contribution by an american muslim in our history, and i have a degree in history.
the only exception i can think of is the Nation of Islam, but i don't think anyone would classify their existance as a contribution to America.

They really excelled in stealing from the Hindus and claiming it as their own. That was kind of neat - and perfectly in line with muslim theft of all sorts of things, especially intellectual, starting with Mo's theft of Old and New Testament stories and his laughable claim to the line from Abraham. LOL. Muslims today can't even accurately remember what happened 10 years ago, yet people actually don't bust out laughing at the prospect that Mohammed had any inkling of his lineage from more than a thousand years before. Bwahahaha.

This manufacturing esteem bullshit has to go. It is a formula for unending strife.
The same stuff is happening with all the multi-culti revisionist history being pulled out of lefty asses and shoved down the throats of indoctrinees imprisoned in the public schools.
The elephant in the room is the fact that western modern culture is superior to all other cultures in the context of the modern world that we inhabit. If you shift the context or narrow the focus enough, you can see bits and pieces of other cultures that may compete favorably with the corresponding aspects of western modern culture, but overall, we win and they lose. The only threat to western modern culture's supremacy is its own success.
It's bad enough to allow people to claim identity affiliation with these inferior cultures. It's unforgivable to manufacture a sense of adequacy--let alone supremacy--for these dead-end cultures.
Once reality starts correcting the absorbed esteem-based propagandizing, the losers start wondering, "Why are we no longer as great as we once were?"
The ready answer is, "Because the man is keeping you down," and another grievance-filled "victim" is born.

Did you cruise through to see how many stores were left in the mall? Shoppingtown, DeWitt NY: parking lot always had cars, but only about 50% of the space is occupied with retail. Impossible to tell how many people were there to spend money and how many were there for the classroom space or the town's free library was in the basement.
That's when I started realizing we were doomed...the only way the mall can rent space is to tax-funded (read: lose all the money you want!) entities.

We've moved from a factual based culture, to a more feminized 'how does it make you feel' one.

Gitmo? Still open. Unemployment? Obama is doubly worse. Internet snooping? Obama doubling down on it. Taxes? Bush wins this one as they are going up under Obama. Natural disaster's? Obama is worse at handling them. Man-made disaster's? Sums up Obama's Presidency nicely.

At that she screamed that she was not brainwashed and stormed out.
Public education.
My middle daughter was in 6th grade when the global warming propoganda was really at it's height. She came home in tears one day convinced the planet was dying and that we'd all burn to a crisp by the time she was 18.
I sat her down, explained the real science and facts behind it, and let her know that this whole global warming thing was a bunch of crap. She was pretty hesitant at first, after all her science teachers at school were telling her the exact opposite.
After a year or two she began to realize that a lot of what her teachers were "teaching" could be termed "questionable" at best. I remember her going through American history. She'd read the book, ask her teachers questions, then come home and ask me if it was true.
I'd give her the whole story, good and bad. I'd show her the original sources, and give her as complete a picture as I could. I told her, well, this is what really happened, but if on the test this will be the answer they want you to write.
It floored her. "But Dad, that's silly, why do I have to give a wrong answer on the test to get it right?" I just laughed. I explained to her that her teachers had a certain world view that they wanted to support and they wanted to make sure she shared their world view. I told her if she wanted to put down the right answer she could, and I'd go down and fight with the school for her if she wanted me too - to make sure she got the grades she deserved.
She's graduated from high school now, and has gone on to college. I get a call from her about once a week, where she is totally flabergasted at the propoganda she is fed in place of real knowledge.
But she's learned not to take their word at face value. She doesn't trust her teachers, she doesn't trust the news media to tell her the truth. She knows now that she has to find it on her own.

There's a curious thing happening in LA. Dozens upon dozens of people have started gourmet lunch trucks that roam the city and park in busy areas in the evening. They're fare ranges from Korean BBQ, to desserts, to noodles and everything else. Very creative and they make an odd spectacle.
However, some of the brick & mortar stores are pointing out what should be obvious; these lunch trucks have none of the requirements that the brick & mortar restaurants are supposed to have. No bathrooms, parking, etc. Best of all; they pay no rent.
This is going to have some impact on the lower end restaurants. I'm not sure if there's anyone who is in the 'wrong' here, but it is an interesting twist in entrepreneurship and a local economy.

We are really on track for 1 million foreclosed homes. That means the banks own all these homes and, if and when the real estate market comes back, the banks stand to make money.

Only government is growing, and it is like a laughing hyena feeding on the carcass of capitalism. What will they prey on next?
The flat line recovery, minus the gov' stimulus jobs would indicate real unemployment is rising, not falling.
