— DrewM They're getting ready to put the old Klansman in the ground and once they do, looks like there will be a fight over how to replace him in the Senate.
The W. Virginia Secretary of State says the Governor can appoint someone to hold the seat until a Special Election is held in 2012. For his own reasons, namely he wants the seat, he's on board with that plan.
Not everyone is going along with the idea. The state Attorney General says he may have a different take on the law than the Secretary of State, the legislature may change the law in an upcoming special session and failing all of that, lawsuits are being prepared.
The state attorney general’s office announced Wednesday that it was looking into it, too, because, Chief Deputy Attorney General Fran Hughes said, “people don’t want for such an important position a caretaker replacement.”Gubernatorial politics are factoring into the calculus. Manchin, the popular two-term governor whom Democrats say has been eyeing the Senate for years, told reporters Monday that he would not appoint himself to the seat. But if the election were held in 2010, and Manchin were to run and win, the ripple effect from his early departure would have a significant impact on the 2012 governor’s race.
“Right now, there are many people in West Virginia talking about many different options,” said Larry Puccio, the West Virginia Democratic Party chairman and a Manchin ally. “One of the options is that many individuals believe that we should have a special election, and they would ask the governor and the Legislature to put that on the special session. One of the options is asking the courts to interpret the law.”
West Virginia is still a pretty Democratic state but if a Republican can replace Ted Kennedy, one can certainly replace Exalted Cyclops Byrd.
Speaking of Bobby Byrds KKK past, via Allah, it turns out that it's no big deal. You see, he was running for office. So says....America's first black President, Bill Clinton.

Because the people of the great state of West Virginy are so racist and so intolerant, the good Senator had to stay in the KKK to keep his cover and stay in office.
Besides, it all depends on what the definition of being in the KKK is.

Billy Jeff also basically said that joining the Klan was the only way one could get elected in '40's and 50's West Virginny. So basically he just admitted what most of us already know. Democrats will stoop to any length imaginable just to get elected.

"And maybe he did something he shouldn't have done come and he spent the rest of his life making it up. And that's what a good person does. There are no perfect people. There are certainly no perfect politicians," he added.
So, if we accept Clinton's assertion that Byrd's association with the Klan was "fleeting," then by Clinton's definition, a good person is one who does the following:
- Writes to the national KKK leader to declare that "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia";
- Writes to a Southern Democrat Senator to declare that he would never agree to serve in the military alongside a Black man, saying, "Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels";
- Filibusters the Civil Rights Act of 1965.
Or maybe Clinton thinks Byrd didn't mean any of those things either, and only did them to stay elected.
Apparently Bill Clinton is okay with a man espousing the most vile political and social beliefs because the end of getting elected justifies whatever means one must use to achieve it.

While Robert Byrd was joining and praising an organization that lynched Black men, Strom Thurmond was fighting that same organization.
"Three years later, he was elected a state senator. In 1938, he campaigned hard among his fellow legislators, and they elected him a circuit judge, which provided an opportunity for him to become known statewide and broaden his political contacts. In 1940, he called on the grand jury in Greenville to be ready to take action against the Ku Klux Klan, which, he said, represented 'the most abominable type of lawlessness.'
"In 1941, Mr. Thurmond joined the Army as a captain. After the invasion of Normandy, his unit was among the first to arrive at the Nazi death camp at Buchenwald. In 1996 he remembered the ways the Germans had murdered their victims -- by starvation or shooting or bashing in their skulls. 'I had never seen such inhuman acts in my life,' he said. 'I couldn't dream of men treating men in such a manner. It was awful.'
"Mr. Thurmond, as a war hero and a tireless campaigner, led the field [for Governor] in the first primary. In the runoff, he attacked his opponent for being insufficiently loyal to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mr. Thurmond won the runoff and the Democratic nomination, which was tantamount to election, with 56 percent of the vote. He became the 10th governor to come from Edgefield.
"A month after he took office in 1947, a mob in Greenville lynched a black man accused of robbing and killing a white taxi driver. As governor, Mr. Thurmond brought in a tough prosecutor, but a jury acquitted all 28 white defendants. Mr. Thurmond was widely praised for his efforts, and he said he believed the prosecution would deter lynchings in the future. South Carolina has never had another lynching."

My brother and I were over 6' as teen agers, but I assure you, we never once wanted to try the old man. Since the State is run by the Dems they will appoint someone and the only chance Repubs will have is the court. The courts in WV have been appointed by Dems for decades as well so there will be no chance there.
The best we could hope for is for the national Party to fund the court battle so the Repubs can drag it out month after month to keep that extra Dem vote out of the Senate until after the Nov elections.
Of course the national Party would rather fund RINOs and strip clubs so that will never happen.

Posted by: fluffy at July 02, 2010 05:23 PM (4Kl5M)
Looked to me like the cat went in full "let's play, Animal-Roughly-My-Size" mode and lost interest when the fawn simply lay still. Full predator mode would have entailed a lot more claw and fang action.
The cat seemed to have hope that the fawn would play some when it was following its mother, and the doe seemed not terribly interested in the cat even when the fawn lay back down.
However, the shepherd seems to have mistaken the doe for a sheep or goat, a domestic animal it could intimidate with its body posture and growls. Surprise! Momma doesn't like canines around her baby: the canines she's familiar with in the wild aren't very friendly.
And like you said, when pissed-off Momma gets back to her fawn, she's a lot less tolerant of the nice kitty, and the nice kitty is smart enough to know that playtime is over.

You've almost got to respect their utter shamelessness. But, we just saw the same thing in the Indonesian Imbecile's jaw-droppingly disingenuous and stupid speech on amnesty that lied about the Constitution, Arizona's law, border security, sealing possibilities of the border, the main task of the US government ... all while surrendering to the hordes, claiming that 'the war is lost and could never be won, anyway'.
Every time you think the Indonesian and his useful idiots in the left can't get any more insane and offensive ... they do. If America doesn't see this for what it is (and even the MFM can't hide what's going on, since half of this comes from proclamations of the turds, themselves) then this nation deserves its fate.

Why, whats going on in Oakland? Al Davis switch from a Nike to a Reebok track suit ?Posted by: Blazer at July 02, 2010 06:01 PM (t72+4)
The Johannes Mehserle case just went to the jury. Mehserle was a BART (subway) cop in Oakland. On New Year's Eve, 2008-09, he and his partner attempted to arrest a young Black man on the Fruitvale station BART platform. At some point, while the arrestee was on the deck face down but not yet in cuffs, still struggling to get free, Mehserle pulled his pistol and shot him in the back. Mehserle's defense at trial is that he meant to pull his Taser but pulled his gun instead.
I work in Oakland and our boss told us to feel free to telecommute for the next few work days. My wife is a registered nurse who works the telephone advice call center for a major Northern California HMO: her management last night reminded the call center nurses of the advice to give to members injured by Mace, pepper spray and tear gas. (But not Taser -- I assume the cops have to pick up people they Taser and take them to a first aid station if necessary.)
There have been several rounds of protests about this event since it happened. A couple of the ones in its immediate aftermath, especially on the date of the victim's funeral, devolved into violent rioting.

I have an old family recipe for 'possom you might like:
Obtain one (1) cleaned (preferrably dead) and skinned possom.
Obtain one white oak plank, freshly sawed and planed, large enough to hold the possom easily. Green wood is preferrable as it is moister.
Place the possom on the clean plank and place in over. Bake at 325 degrees for 90 minutes or until the possom stops jerking and is browned.
Remove from oven, scrape possom into garbage can and serve the plank with a white slightly fruity, jug 'o' corn squeezins.
Enjoy!

File under DUDE!:
Mexican authorities have arrested two alleged members of the Aztecas gang in the killings of a U.S. Consulate employee and her husband in Juárez in March, officials said today.
Officials said Chávez Castillo told police that members of the Juárez drug cartel, La Linea, who live in the United States ordered the murder of Enriquez because she facilitated passports (visas) to members of the Sinaloa cartel.
If this is true, it means that the corruption has already spread across the border. In Tijuana recently the head of their DMV was killed and his body hanged from a bridge in retaliation for supplying documents to a competing cartel.

Well, my good news is that we met with the first of the realtors today -- we'll be selling our house in SoCal this summer. Anyway, her assessment would get us out of this place with a short time on market (she's guessing no more than 30-45 days, outside) and with money in our pocket. The latter is really great news for us as we've only been in this place 3.5 years.
Anyway, we'll see if the other realtors think the same, but her estimate was about what we'd come up with, plus she thinks there's very little additional that we need to do to prep the house, so that's great.

I don't know to what extent there really is trafficking in US military weapons to the Mexican cartels, but wouldn't that involve corruption on this side of the border? Apparently some members of US gangs have been able to join the US Armed Forces and from there have been able to steal guns for resale to criminals, including the Mexican cartels.
And is it at all hard to believe that there are some instances of corrupt US officials redirecting border enforcement resources to leave openings for their favored Mexican cartels to use?
The example you linked to isn't even corruption per se, because the people arrested on the US side aren't US officials but Mexican cartel members. And the presence of Mexican and Central American gangs in the US has been known for many, many years.

Mr. Y-not did a radiation physics internship in the Four Corners region of college and regaled me with stories from that summer, including Mexican Hat and its one restaurant with 6 menu items, including the Cowboy Beef sandwich.
Now the annoying thing is that we need a second car finally after living with just one all this time and Mr. Y-not wants an SUV. He's looking at the small Lexus, but I saw a Cadillac SRX in the parking lot the other day that looked good. But I bet we wind up with the Lexus as it's the best in its class in terms of safety.

I'm confused. Doesn't illegal imply non-existent? That is, doesn't passing a law against something make that something immediately disappear everywhere and for all time? That's what legislators believe -- no coincidence that Obama, Biden and Emanuel, all pure legislators, believed that passing a bill called a "Stimulus" would instantly stimulate the economy and that passing a bill called "Health Care Reform" would automatically restructure the health care industry.

As for the "90% U.S. guns cause all Mexican drug crime" everyone without an axe to grind knows that is crap. It's either AKs (that are not even made here) or stolen weapons originally provided to Mexico's military.
A few months ago there was a National Geographic channel program (I think it was Explorer with Lisa Ling) where she was parroting that nonsense while handling obvious military weapons like crew served machine guns and grenade launchers (confiscated in Mexico) while bemoaning the fact that all of this hardware was coming from America. When you are in a management position there can be NOTHING other than strict professionalism with the womenze. Especially those like that one who is already suing.
And there lies the problem. You can never tell which one are the sharks from the ones who like to act like normal co-workers. You find out when they break it off in your back.
After working a long time in a large corporation and seeing this over and over again I can tell you that the man will ALWAYS take the brunt of any action.

Posted by: Jim in San Diego at July 02, 2010 07:52 PM (oIp16)
Yes, indeed: you are ASSUMING she was being bribed. However, as a consular official, you could just as easily ASSUME that her job description included facilitating visas for any Mexican national who applied for one. As in, that's what consulates do.
The only person alleging that she was servicing the Sinaloa cartel is her assassin. The story doesn't even say that HE accused her of being paid by the Sinaloa cartel to do anything, and it doesn't point to any evidence that she actually helped an identified Sinaloa cartel member get a visa or that she knew who among the visa applicants who came before her were members of any cartel. Given that her killer also murdered people coming from a children's party, he's not really that reliable a reporter.
So yes, it is possible that she was a corrupt official on the payroll of the Sinaloa cartel. But the news report you linked to doesn't in fact say that. It just says that the La Linea cartel wanted her dead because Sinaloa cartel members got visas through her office -- which could just as easily mean that the La Linea people tried to bribe or intimidate her into not issuing visas to specific persons, and that she refused to take their orders or their money. Which would kind of be the opposite of corruption.

The high irony is that they claim that the gun restrictions are necessary because their city is such a hive of villainy and scum... but they fail to explain how the outright gun BAN that was in place until this week didn't turn Chicago into a hive of sweetness and light.
“No Supreme Court judge could live in my community and come to the same conclusion they did a couple days ago,” Ald. Sharon Denise Dixon (24th) said.
“I find it hard to believe that the Supreme Court justices that voted to strike our handgun laws have spent any time in the communities that many of us represent,” Ald. Toni Preckwinkle (4th) said.
“There’s no way if they knew the violence our young people face every day that they could decide this was a reasonable course of action.”
So it's yet another example of the Legislative Mind-Set: by passing these gun regulations, they will cause gun crime to instantly and automatically disappear. Because, you know, it'll be illegal to abuse the right to own a gun in Chicago by using it in commission of a crime.
This may be the defining distinction between liberals and conservatives. Perhaps liberals believe that human beings always obey laws and therefore passing a law is sufficient to solve any problem, whereas conservatives recognize that some human beings actually break laws and therefore laws only succeed if they are enforced.

OK, I'ff try to take this one step at a time...
Points I'm responding to are bolded in your original post.
1. Yes, I'm assuming she was taking money for issuing visas she would not have approved anyways. Other possible explanations would include that she was also being blackmailed or otherwise extorted into doing what she did. Other than for reasons of money, I don't see any other credible explanations (assuming that the charges are correct) for events as they transpired.
2. I'm going to call a possible "logical fallacy" error here on your part in that ONLY a criminal involved in those evil deeds would have inside knowledge of those activities. As one prosecutor once said: "just because our witness happens to be a hooker, please don't assume that her eyes are bad".
3. Typically, the cartels are not (yet) killing people (specifically Americans) for their day-to-day activities. They do seem to have no problem killing those that are helping rival cartels in any meaningful capacity. I'd be interested to hear if there is any known 'game theory' logic behind that strategy. I'm also assuming that any arrangements with a drug cartel are an exclusive service agreement.
If they killed her for just doing her job, are they going to kill her replacement too, or any American official for issuing visas to anyone as part of their job? I don't think so.

Why are you assuming that she was issuing any visas that wouldn't have been issued otherwise? Her killer alleges that he killed her because she helped rival cartel members get visas. Is there any other evidence that corroborates his claim?
Is there in fact any evidence that those Sinaloa cartel members got visas? The article doesn't name them, doesn't show whether they got visas and on what dates. So the only evidence presented in the article about Sinaloa cartel members getting visas is what the assassin says.
A perfectly logical alternative theory of the crime is that the Las Lineas cartel directed her to STOP the visas of their rivals, that she refused to take orders from Las Lineas, and that they killed her for failing to take their orders. Nothing in the story contradicts that theory either.
So unless and until an investigation shows that she was engaged in corrupt activities, it's premature to declare definitively that she was corrupt.
As for the cartels killing American officials for their day-to-day activities, so far they haven't killed a lot of American officials, but they sure kill a lot of Mexican officials and private citizens for the offense of existing, and not just for favoring rival cartels. It doesn't seem that they have a really high threshold for justifying killing anybody.

This response is to Drew M.
With all respect to his "youth and inexperience". Drew, I am convinced that you are well enough informed to know the source of this reference. You began your post, predictably I may add, by referencing Byrd's KKK experience. Let me ask you this question..Did you you hold any views or even join any organizations in your youth that you would change today if you could? I love the quote from Emerson that said "Foolish Consisitency is the hobgobblin of small minds". I have friends in both liberal and conversatives camps who only vote one way. Sadly precitably. Many of us go through changes in life with respect both to the candidates and parties we support. As Ronald Reagan taught us with respect to the Soviet Union., people and facts do change. "The Soviet Union is no longer an "Evil Empire". Reagan was one of our best presidents, the first President that I could vote for at age 18. And I did . Good choice.
Don't you think that change can be a good thing if it is based on new information and new ideas?
I do honestly think that Byrd regretted his KKK days. You could have easily began your post with criticisms of his other policies such as his lack of support for the insurgency in the Iraq War or his support of the healthcare bill which I doubt he actually read given his ailing health and age but not inexperience. I am not supporting the KKK with Byrd by any means. It is a very sick organization. There are a lot of people who would like to bring it back. May hear from some of those tonight on this blog. .......I hope not. I do feel that most of the contributers to this blog are above that.
I love this blog on account that it is the best in terms of news accuracy and one does not have to be PC. I was just hoping tha you wouldn't start out the blog with the KK experience in the first sentance. That 's all. Thank you for letting me speak my mind. My financial contribution will follow. In addition to my friends and family with to whom I am introducing this blog.

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth the unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth

I'm really enjoying this conversation stuiec, but I have to go very soon.
Yes, the Mexican drug cartels do have an exceptionally low threshold for violence, but it's usually for some purpose (if even in cases of mistaken identity).
One theory I'll advance right now is that (by summation on my part) is that the Mexican drug cartels have few penalties for excessive violence. Usually there is a feedback process that if a criminal enterprise becomes too violent, there is a popular outcry from the citizenry to "do something". The public officials are compelled to act, and that puts heat on the criminal enterprise and that in turn calms things down. That feedback process seems to be missing in Mexico.
Their strategy seems to be that violence for it's own benefit seems to have some intangible benefit all-of-its-own. Maybe a regulating effect on rival gangs?

OBAMA wants us to cut the amount of gasoline we use..... The best way to stop using so much gasoline is to deport 15 million illegal immigrants. That would be 15 million less people using our gas. The price of gas would come down.....
Bring our troops home from Afghanistan to guard the borders....
When they catch an illegal immigrant crossing the Border, hand him a canteen, rifle and some ammo and ship him to Afghanistan ....
Tell him if he wants to come to AMERICA then he must serve a tour in OUR military.... Give him a soldier's pay while he's there and tax him on it...... After his tour, he will be allowed to become a citizen since he defended this country..... He will also be registered to be taxed and be a legal resident.....
This option will probably deter illegal immigration and provide a solution for the troops in Afghanistan and the aliens trying to make a better life for themselves.. ...... If they refuse to serve, ship them to Afghanistan anyway, without the canteen, rifle or ammo.....
Problem solved.....

illegal aliens forced into OUR troops, OUR military?
You fail to see the convolution?
First, either we're in or we're out of Afghanistan.
Second, you'd pay AND trust conscripted illegal aliens to guard our border from their fellows? Not I.
Legal aliens current procedure, voluntarily joining our military, is completely legitimate. But the illegals would need to join the French Legion, a different matter all together; and America has no parallel with the Legion.
Cross at designated legal points of entry crossing international borders.
The audacity of hope.
Build a solar powered satellite and land station monitored electrifying fence enforcing the current and legitimate US immigration law and border crossing law that Arizona legally endorses, and border patrol is responsible to enforce.

How the Democrats hold together a coalition of the KKK and the NAACP is one of the great mysteries in the history of politics. Were there any objective study of politics it would doubtless mystify honest historians how that volatile mixture could have possibly lasted as long as it has.
