— Ace The numbers are around what Rasmussen found last week, so there's a comforting confirmation here.
Republican Marco Rubio has nudged ahead of independent Charlie Crist in FloridaÂ’s nationally watched U.S. Senate race in a hypothetical three-way matchup with Democrat Kendrick Meek, according to a Mason-Dixon poll released Saturday.Rubio led Crist in the poll 38 percent to 33 percent, with 18 percent for Meek and 11 percent undecided. Â…
CristÂ’s fate depends on whether he attracts large numbers of Democratic voters in the general election, the poll found. The results indicate that Meek is gaining support among Democrats, which could draw votes away from Crist and give Rubio an advantage.
I know, I know: It's early. And, as Mr. Wolf says in his guest appearance on Sesame Street, let's not start soaping each other's backs just yet, gentlemen.
Still, for a race that was trending towards the heartbreaker category, I personally take some joy in this.

In the last fund-raising quarter, Rubio broke all statewide records for funds raised. Why waste money when he doesn't have too on primary voters. He is a shoo-in now for the R nomination. He is doing personal appearances around the state though, building his base., raising more money.
Patience ...

1. he was a popular Governor
2. he had a crisis fall into his lap (the oil spill)
3. the primaries had yet to happen and the campaign hadn't really begun
and add to that Dems flirting w/ voting for him, everyone was freaking out and insulting Floridians when they saw Crist up and I calmed everyone down explaining thngs will pick up after the primaries which are pratically here, and because the primaries are here Floridians are getting involved and this is what i've noticed:
1. they've decided they don't like Crist (his approval rating has suddenly tanked the last month, and yes i'm aware Ras claims it's at 58% but other polls have it in the 40s)
2. they've decided Rick Scott is too risky and seem to be flocking back to McCullum (thank God in my opinion, though i'll admit the lesser of two evils)
3. they REALLY REGRET voting for Obama, remember this is a state that has more Dems registered but those Dems end up voting Rep, and while the most diverse state and a major purple one, we typically lean Red. Obama only won the state w/ barely 51% of the vote being one of his top 5 closest states to win and in my opinion a fluke victory, out of all the swing states, next to Missouri (which he lost in 0

Perhaps some FL resident could school me on a question I have: since it seems FL has a substantial bloc of elderly voters, how does Rubio's conservatism (the "Repubs want to destroy Social Security" meme) play out with them.
It worries me a little that in light of Crist's obvious bobbing and weaving on issues, he retrains as much support as he does.
What's the frequency, Florida Kenneths?

It's about time the polls caught up with reality. Somebody's gonna have to 'splain it to me how Crist, who was once so far behind Rubio, could have suddenly bolted to the front of the polls like a speeding bullet.
Rubio may not be the perfect conservative, but he's a damn sight better that Crist any day.
And for Nash Rambler in #1 above, I am so stealing that. Just so you know.

the problem w/ the "destroy social security" scare tactic is that Floridians overwhelmingly disapprove of the Health Care Bill and seniors are becoming a Republican vote the last decade, Obama's approval rating down here was in the 60s and doing well even though he only won by 51%, once he touched the subject of healthcare about 3 months into office, it tanked and never went back up

Seems kinda funny that in light of yesterday's story (Dems who are running for reelection running AWAY from Obama, and hiding their Dem party affiliation), that Charlie Crist is posing for pictures WITH Obama.
If all he's got is Obama, and CC is an independent and not even a "genuine" Dem, at some point soon he's a loser. Are the elderly snowbirds from the northeast, who vote in Florida elections, really all that enthusiastic about the Obama Mosque at Ground Zero?

McMahon can win that race, the campaign has really begun now and the Dems hitting her WWE connections is only hurting them the way it did with Simmons plus the tapes of Hillary and Obama doing WWE messages during the campaign hurt them as well on that issue
NV: Ried 46, Angle 44
the fact Reid has a shot in this race is disgusting but that's what happens when the tea party irrationally pushes a bad candidate, but that said we gotta get behind Angle and she's withstood the worst from Reid, let's see if she can comeback
CA: Fiorina 47, Boxer 42
Boxer is up 5 according to Ras, so clearly w/ other polls saying otherwise, this is a dead heat, Boxer is unpopular in CA all of all places and she's beatable

unlike the governor's race there where we have a 3rd party screw up, we could pull this one off, let's just hope Buck isn't the next Angle

this one is in a dead heat and euthusiam could be the balance of power here, Johnson could win by a near margin or Fiengold could
OH: Portman 43, Fisher 37
Reps should win this race plain and simple, Strickland is unpopular and facing a 1 term legacy w/ him being down in the polls in his bid for re-election

The problem with the numbers, to me anyway, has been Crist's continued R support. Crist has made it clear he will not be out-progressived or out-liberaled by Meek or Greene.
Abortion? Check.

For Obama's (fill in the blank)? Checks.

I don't think Ed is really that much of a conservative. He's kind of squishy, touchy-feely, libertarian. Very naive.
Anyway, I find the comment threads exhausting most of the time at HA, primarily because of the excessive focus on religion, and I don't find myself agreeing with Ed very often any more (see above), but I still think Hot Air is an excellent conservative news feed.
I know they shut down Friday's thread - I don't really care to try to figure out why, but given the moronic (not in a good way) nature of some of its commenters, I can easily imagine what happened - but I bet the mosque thing makes next week's poll.

Rubio is very well spoken and gutsy on various talk shows. I applaud his willingness to go mix it up. Rubio was a star in the legislature and all the personal buzz is positive. Now he should run some TV commercials in Central Florida. Seriously, the silence is deafening up here.
Don't wait until the ads are so thick and fierce nobody is listening or they hate you for running _another_ one.
Crist going hard negative on Rubio probably depressed Rubio's numbers for a time as well. Remember the Fox interview where Crist went relentlessly negative and wouldn't answer any questions directly?
I thought that hurt Crist more than Rubio, but any kind of money scandal rumors tend to reinforce what everyone thinks about every politician, dirty.

Not really devouring SC. We are not as ideal a location for the snow belt retirees, although I do have one elderly couple behind me who moved down from NY.
The problem with SC is that it is a high tax State for the South East. They are much better off in GA, FL, or some other location. In addition, insurance is extremely high in this State. I pay more for car insurance here than I did in the Bay Area in CA.

I try to avoid it now. It is actually easier to get around in Charleston now than Myrtle Beach.
I suspect that the cost of living in Myrtle Beach is higher than it is here, so again I would have to ask what the attraction for retirees would be there. Also, they wouldn't be getting that big return on their houses from NY so they can buy cheaply at the Beach. The prices in NY have fallen out the bottom while the Beach remained the same.

I'll be working at campaign HQ here in Jax and I'll damned sure be casting my vote for Rubio. Frankly, I'm not even sure I love Rubio, but I despise Crist.
The tougher vote here in Florida is the governor's race. The McCollum campaign has done itself more harm than good. First, prior to stating his platform, they launched agressive and nasty attacks on Scott. Scott continued, even then, with pushing his own platform. Then, when McCollum went too far and Scott struck back, the Florida GOP steps in to tell them to play nice. Scott went back to pushing his own platform and McCollum kept hitting at Scott.
McCollum was one of the very first AGs to stand up in defense of Governor Brewer but he also said that such a law was not appropriate for Florida. Now that he's losing...Ta Da!...he's pushing a Florida immigration law.
He simply comes across as slimy and has been shown to be a liar.
So, when it comes down to it, I'm leaning towards Scott. Thus far, I've yet to hear anything to support McCollums claims of Liar! Thief! against him and, in the end, he's a highly successful businessman who is not an incumbent.
Perhaps I'll change my mind before the election, but that's where I am now.
