— DrewM Inside baseball stuff but really odd.
House Democrats on Wednesday barely won a 210-209 vote to adjourn the House without extending the Bush tax cuts.Thirty-nine House Democrats voted against adjournment after Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) urged opposition to the motion in a floor speech that said it would be irresponsible for Congress to leave without providing certainty on the tax issue. Dozens of Democrats in tough races voted against adjourning.
"Vote no on this adjournment resolution. Give Congress a chance to vote on extending tax rates," Boehner said.
Boehner's floor speech turned the vote on adjournment into a referendum on the tax cuts, which has divided Democrats for months.
The Speaker of the House rarely votes (since it's nominally a non-partisan position that represents the whole House) but Pelosi had to cast the tie breaking vote.
Dozens of House Democrats signed a letter sent to Pelosi urging her to allow a vote to extend all the "Bush tax cuts" before the election. Other Democrats didn't want a vote either because they want taxes to go up or they preferred to have the issue (Republicans want to cut taxes on the rich but not the middle class!).
The latter two groups won and now a lot of the former group are going to lose big time. On their behalf let me be the first to say, Thanks Nancy!
Now the fight moves onto the lame duck where extending the tax cuts for some or all will compete with whatever recommendations the Obama 'Deficit Reduction' panned comes up with. Here's hoping we pick up enough special election seats (WV, DE, IL) to hold the line until January.

I can understand their desire to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire. What I cannot understand is their inability to see the reality of the situation. I am at a loss. Happy too! But if they are this stupid...

If you add up all the taxes "rich" people pay -- income tax, capital gains tax, property tax, sales tax etc... It adds up to well over 50%... In many cases tax rates add up to as much as 60-70%. And this isn't even the uber-rich. This is the hard-working middle class "rich". (Somehow the Warren Buffets and the Microsofters of the world get away with lower tax rates. Any wonder they are democrats?)
The democrats steal the nations wealth, and it all starts with their propaganda to stigmatize the "evil rich" and how they don't pay enough.
Then, to add to the insult and the graft, the "evil rich" die, and the government will steals another 55% on assents that have already been taxed. Often times forcing heirs to sell off the business to pay the tax.
Democrats are asshole and thieves.

Those special election seats get filled right away as noted above, which makes those particular elections even more important. Once the lame duck session gets going, the defeated dems will pass ANYTHING put on their plate, because they will be desperate to get some sort of lobbying job, any crumbs at all from their democrat masters.
The lame duck session could possibly be worse than the last two years. An awful lot of bad crammed into two months.

Five reasons [insert random GOP candidate's name] can win this November.
#1-5 Blah, blah, blah, blah...
#6 Obama
#7 Nancy Pelosi
#8 Harry Reid
I do not think a more toxic combination of arrogance, conceit, or fecklessness has ever existed. They just screwed over their own members in the marginal races big time. We'd better be prepared to lock the capitol down during the lame-duck session because they've just set themselves up for a big fall. Did they even pass a budget?
Even in the race that dare not be named because of the AOStrife it would case will be carried because of those three. November will be a slaughter, beyond slaughter... is there even a word for what's coming?

Obama thinks that it's to his advantage to pressurize the Republicans by forcing them to explicitly propose tax cuts for the rich as part of a new tax cut package in 2011. He is, of course, WRONG: the public sentiment for tax cuts overwhelms the public sentiment to deny the "rich" those tax cuts.

Not always, but we are so far along the y-axis of the Laffer curve that increased taxed receipts are a side benefit of tax cuts.
I never liked the "tax cuts raise revenue" argument because the underlying premise that tax cuts are good only if the gov't needs more revenue for its myriad of programs. I'd prefer to phrase the argument from a liberty standpoint.

I think even this gives the "pro-tax cut" Dems too much credit. It didn't just so happen that they lost that vote by one ballot, out of 419 votes cast and with 39 Democrat "rebels." This was pretty clearly a whipped vote, with the maximum possible number of vulnerable Dems allowed to go back home and disingenuously claim "oh, I really tried, but the votes weren't there."

was allowed to vote against this. Looking at a DCCC *spit* poll they released just recently:
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee today released a new Grove Insight poll that shows Representative Jim Marshall leading Republican challenger Austin Scott by 12 points.
In the initial head-to-head in the race for GeorgiaÂ’s 8th congressional district, Marshall leads Scott 48 to 36 percent. Conducted September 13-15, the poll surveyed 400 likely voters and has a 4.9 percent margin of error.
Which in a heavily weighted poll showing the incumbent below 50%. I guess we can safely assume this to be a neck-and-neck race.
