House GOP Passes Earmark Ban
— DrewM

One of the big problems with pork spending is its 'everyone does it' 't nature. Why should one politician force his constituents to pay for other people's crap when they don't get anything for their money? It's a vicious cycle that's hard to break.

Well today the House GOP took action to do just that.

House Republicans approved a conference-wide moratorium on earmarks on Thursday, one day after a House committee enacted a ban on for-profit earmarks.

The Republicans' moratorium is more extensive than the House Appropriations Committee's ban in that it applies to all earmarks for all members of the caucus.

...House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (Ind.) hailed the decision in an interview on Fox News.

"Republicans did something very dramatic today that's going to make it very uncomfortable for business as usual," he said. "So now House Republicans are going to the American people and saying we want a clean break from the runaway spending in the past. And that's going to be quite a contrast from this Congress and the administration."

It's hard to get to excited about the actual dollar amount (earmarks in total are about $16 billion in spending) but this is a very big philosophical and political point.

Given their profligate ways while in power Republicans had lost their claim to fiscal conservatism. This action is a good start towards regaining it.

It's also a big victory for the White Power, Tea Party movement. I'm suspicious of people who claim to want to cut spending, usually the mean spending others want, not theirs. The Republicans have put their, well our, money where their mouths are. Hopefully, they will be rewarded at the polls and be embolden to take on the really big ticket spending items.

For now, well done to the House GOP.

4 Sounds like unilateral disarmament to me.

It is, sort of.

It will put to the test whether more spending or trying to control spending is a bigger weapon. If people are really serious about wanting to control spending and corruption, then the GOP has trade in one weapon for another.

If people want spending and dealing, then yeah, the GOP gave up a weapon (though not a big one since as the minority they don't get as many earmarks).

16 This IS a Big Deal:  The Repubs lost the House in 2006 and then lost real worse in 2008 because they lost their identity--their 'brand' and their purpose for being elected in the first place:  To resist the growth of government spending and power

They became Democrat Light, or Democrat Slightly Righty

Without their identity and clear purpose of limiting govt to necessary powers and duties like natl defense, there is no reason for the Republican Party to exist

17 Something you miss about earmarks in this specific post is that earmarks are the grease that makes larger spending slide through the processing machine.

Good. The GOP needs to stake out their territory and start drawing clear distinctions between them and the Dims. Stick to their guns and use it in the upcoming elections as a taliking point.

If the GOP will just listen to theTea Partiers and quietly begin adopting parts of their platform, and if the Dims keep on committing political suicide, then we have a decent chance of regaining control of Congress in 2010. *fingers crossed*

20 gee to bad they didn't do it when they were the majority party. Since the Dems took over earmarks have been cut roughly in half from their high of 26 billion

Posted by: Rick Warren at March 11, 2010 09:44 AM (mhD2v)

21 Everyone realizes that the biggest earmark was delivered by Jack Murtha from the grave. His death put Norm "Boeing" Dicks in control of defense appropriations, and rather quickly Northrop/EADS dropped out of the tanker competition - giving Boeing a no-compete win and likely higher costs. Dicks didn't even have to lift a finger. Appropriately, Northrop told Dicks before they told the USAF.

btw, you notice how this passed easily?

The Democrats aren't stupid. This is an election year and they know it's time again to pretend to be fiscally conservative.

This isn't really a big win for the Republicans because the Democrats will always vote for these toothless symbolic bills in an election year. Anything to blur the lines between (D)'s and (R)'s helps the party in control. Why fix something if the fix makes no difference?

42 This is a good thing, even if it's sort of symbolic.

We need to change the way the federal government works. If you want your congress-critter to spend his days in DC routing federal tax dollars to your district, vote democrat.
If you want your congress-critter spending his days in DC cutting out the deadwood and lowering your tax burden and resisting the impulse to regulate your life in every way imaginable until you can't even be sure whether or not you are breaking the law every time you piss in your pool or put salt and butter on your baked potato, vote Republican.

These pork projects can and should be funded locally. I am now the proud owner of the #1 porker in DC. John Olver(D-MA-01) and I just found out today on Big-government.com, lol. He is responsible for the huge 4-level parking garage in downtown Fitchburg next to the commuter rail line that cost you guys 4 million and stands 90% empty 24/7. It's disgusting. I doubt the income earned from people using the thing would even be enough to pay for all the electricity to run the damn lights.

earmarks are used to buy votes on much more costly programs ...  if I agree to your earmark, you agree to vote for a bloated spending bill ...

so its not the price of the earmarks that is important it their corrupting influence ...

as far as hurting someone at voting time, what is your opponent going to say ?  Vote for me so I can get earmarks for you ???  since most (90%+) of voters never get any benifit from earmarks they really don't see them as a reason to vote for someone ...
