Howard Dean accuses NYT of being shills over Blumenthal article
— Purple Avenger

He's like the the Energizer Bunny.

...“Let's be fair about this. This is a New York Times gotcha story planted by the opposition,” said Dean, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. “It was planned by the opposition. The New York Times did not acknowledge that in their front page article.”...
"the opposition" eh? Must be in league with the notorious "they" who are always "out to get" people and smear them with inconvenient facts.

I'm sympathetic Howard, I really am -- the sinister forces of darkness are everywhere these days, fracking everywhere. The only "safe" place for you is probably an underground bunker on Shemya. They won't be able to touch you there.

16 Whether the story was planted by "the opposition" is irrelevant. Sometimes "the opposition" gets lucky and is unequivocally right. Since "the opposition" seems to have their handprints all over this, what Dean wanted was for the Times to parse Dick Blumenthal's nonsensical nuance, in the interest of journalistic fairness. Which of course is bullshit. Dr. Dean is just a hyper-partisan jackass. He lost all my respect when he caved--a la Stupak--on the corporatist health-care bill.

25 Beck is talking about an exchange with James Gandofini at opening night of the new circque de soleil.   Apparently while he was holding his child Gandolfini said "so satan is at a clown show" and Beck responded with something like "even satan needs down time or something like that".  Beck then took his kid to the bathroom and when he came back the gandolfini family was gone.  Just as the lights were dimming Beck said Gandolfini came back and apologized.  Sound like Gandopfini's kids got involved and yelled at dad for being a total jackass and shamed him into apologizing.

27 What is he, stupid? How does he think journalism works?

If it weren't for disgruntled employees and political opponents bringing them stories, newspapers wouldn't have any news to print. Sources seek out reporters, not the other way around. If you read a political scandal, it's because a source got the reporter to print exactly what was fed to him.

Dean is angry because in his experience democrats are protected by the media. They only print democrat scandals when another democrat is the source. He is assuming that in this case the source is Republican, and he may be wrong.

What is really concerning is that they were both out for a lovely evening with their families, their children were there.  Where is self restraint?  Gandolfini impacted his own children just to get the shot in at Beck.  And, as Beck pointed out, what is he doing but exercising his right to freedom of speech and he further pointed out that he keeps waiting for people to call him with proof to refute everything he is saying and the calls aren't coming.  Oddly enough he went into great detail describing his new security detail saying "they have stopped everything but the cold stares".   Makes you think the reason for the story was to emphasize the new security detail.

Levin suspects the NYT broke this story now in a calculated effort to diminish its impact because months down the road -- assuming Blumenthal survives the deserved backlash -- this will be old news and thus irrelevant in the fall. Levin compared this situation to that of Bush in 2000 when that weird-hatted guy up in Maine disclosed that Bush was arrested for OUI in 1976 (the weekend before the election, I believe). There is [surprise] no journalistic integrity at work here: this is all political.

Dean's lame deflection is irrelevant and baseless. As a matter of fact, Dean is irrelevant and baseless. Blumenthal's been lying about this stuff for mad long. It's inexcusable. So, according to Blumenthal's reasoning, I am entitled to make the claim that "I served in Iraq during both Gulf Wars and when we came home, we were disillusioned." If I were to say that, I would not be merely misrepresenting my service through *misspeak*, I'd be flat-out lying. Because the facts of my service record are that I enlisted in the National Guard while a senior in high school in December 1991...transferred to the regular Army from 1993-1996...was discharged...then reenlisted in the uard again in October 2003. I never stepped foot in Iraq. My service is what it is and I am proud of having served honorably. Blumenthal's actions are likely driven by guilt over his multiple deferments (if he has a conscience remaining). I've read that the actor Brian Dennehy has a problem with this stuff, too.

I can only imagine the hand-wringing in the NYT offices over the decision to *gasp* print a negative story about a lying (is there any other kind?) Democrat candidate.

Between 1987-1997 I bounced back and forth between the Army Reserve and National Guard.  Our unit wasn't called up for Desert Storm; mostly it was aviation, medical and MP units that got called up as far as I could tell.

I wouldn't consider even for a second trying to boast that I "served during Desert Storm", much less lie about actually being there.  Being a part-time, non-activated Reservist during wartime isn't even in the same ballpark; hell, not in the same continent- literally.

I could see confusion or a mis-statement if someone served active duty stateside during a war.  As a non-active reservist who was thousands of miles away?  There's no excuse for even loosely implying you served in wartime other than being a fucking liar.

As I said in the original post, he said that there were many instances where he stated emphatically that he never actually served IN Vietnam but "during" Vietnam.  That there were only a few times where he stated that he was in Vietnam and it was only by inference.

Cavuto's inference was that he (or one of his producers had researched all the speeches and saw the numbers.

My concern is that seems like a LOT of research in a short time and Fox has been drifting left hard since the Saudis bought into them.  I just don't trust them anymore.

President Lee Myung-bak vowed "stern action" for the provocation following the release of long-awaited results from a multinational investigation into the March 26 sinking near the Koreas' tense maritime border. North Korea, reacting swiftly, called the results a fabrication, and warned that any retaliation would trigger war. It continued to deny involvement in the sinking of the warship Cheonan

Howie has extra special reasons for covering this up. When he began his noble quest for the Brass Ring, he bragged about being a doctor in Vermont and helping a minor get an abortion after she was supposedly abused at home. One problem; healthcare providers in Vermont are supposed to report all such cases. None was ever filed. So either hammerin'g Howie made this up, all to appease lovers of abortion, or he broke a law designed to stop the abuse of children. The only good thing to be said here is that if true, he was blazing a trail for the Planned Parenthood abortion mills that have been misleading minors for the last decade.Howard Dean; pioneer in the facilitation in the abuse of minors.

This makes Biden's penchant for stealing the speeches of British losers pale in comparison.

Russian official: Iranian nuclear plant to be launched by August

MOSCOW — Russia's top nuclear official said Thursday that Iran's first nuclear plant is on schedule and will be put into operation this summer, while the country's foreign minister urged Tehran to co-operate with international nuclear authorities to avoid possible sanctions. The Russia-built plant in Bushehr has been a key issue of contention between Iran and the international community. Iran and Russia say the plant is intended only for electricity generation, but critics say it has been a part of alleged Iranian efforts to develop nuclear weapons."We expect the nuclear power plant will be launched by August if everything goes according to plan," said Sergei Kiriyenko, chief of Rosatom, the state-run nuclear corporation.

What Cavuto doesn't understand is that service in conflict is a badge of honor, and any person who affixes themselves to that badge by willful deceit sullies the service of those who actually paid the ultimate price and those fortunate to return to our beloved soil.

Cavuto couldn't have been more wrong and I suspect he will acquiesce on today's show and right the wrong.  If not, Cavuto just doesn't understand the concept of Stolen Valor, and more specifically, Cavuto should not be speaking on a subject so near and dear to many for which he made no personal commitment.  This is a very sensitive subject, and the naval pontificators should simply leave it alone.

154 As I said in the original post, he said that there were many instances where he stated emphatically that he never actually served IN Vietnam but "during" Vietnam.

Posted by: Vic at May 20, 2010 11:06 AM (6taRI)

That is bullshit spin. For one thing if you didn't serve in Vietnam why would you mention your service and Vietnam in the same sentence. My point is that serving in the reserves in Washington D. C. had nothing to do with the war in Vietnam. Actually joining the reserves in 1970 had everything to do with NOT serving in Vietnam. Nixon had been reducing troops since he took office and reserve units were not being called to active duty. Especially Marine reserve units as the Marines were the first to be pulled out.

In the video in the Times he didn't infer anything. He said when I served in Vietnam. That isn't an inference it's a claim, a false one.
