— Ace Hard core:
Troubled comic Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told The Post. Lange's frantic mom called 911 Saturday morning after she entered his Hoboken apartment and found the bloodied funnyman, a law-enforcement source said. Lange sustained six "hesitation wounds" and three deep plunges.
Stabbing himself? Jeeze Louise.
In related news, Jackie "The Jokeman" Martling just got a boner.

A hack would have gone straight to the "deep plunges", but Lange knew to build up to the punch line!
A real artiste!

When more details come to light, we will discover the impetus behind this tragic deed, the lack of a single payor government funded health care program.

Who. Freaking. Cares. Howard Stearn is one sick individual and a symptom of one of the country's main problems. Moral decay. And those who have read my comments for a while know I'm not exactly a religious zealot but I can recognize facts when they jump up and kick me in the face. The people that listen to him, I would almost bet my mortgage, are 80% + libs. At least social libs, ie imo squishes.

Its not snark.
I'm an infrequent listener, and I distinctly remember hearing Lange say one time that he wished he could have a gun, but couldn't on account of his criminal record.
Stern (who actually carries a concealed Seecamp. . .or used to in the pre-Bloomberg days when NYC let celebrities do that sort of thing) said that thought that with Lange's history of substance abuse, maybe he'd be better off without one.
FWIW, Lange is probably the closest thing the Stern show has to an on-air conservative. The others (Robin Quivers, Gary DellAbate, Fred Norris) are reliably liberal in their outlook.

I'm not liberal, and I like Howard Stern (in small doses).
I don't care for the exploitation of prostitutes, porn actresses, and handicapped, but he's actually pretty insightful into pop culture, and he'll come right out and ask overstuffed celebrities questions about embarrassing personal issues that nobody else will (always good for a laugh).

"Assisted" suicide is mostly illegal already; I can only imagine the second trying to explain to the Hoboken police why he decapitated Lange with a sword after Lange partially disemboweled himself.

You can't really expect Stern to say on air that's its OK to make fun of his pal/colleague who just attempted suicide (no matter how hypocritical that makes him). Loyalty still applies.
I think the fact that the show has become effectively uncensored has helped in certain ways. Because the audience has changed (its now only paid subscribers), the content has changed a little bit.
I definitely think that Lange was (is) funnier than his predecessor Martling, though that change happened several years before Stern went to satellite.

Unless you know Lange personally, and his friends, and the actions of those around him, I don't think its appropriate for you to judge their actions here.
The guy has a long history of substance abuse, he's been through detox a few times, he's undergoing psychiatric therapy, he's been on anti-depressants, he has a history of shutting himself away from others, etc.
Is it the fault of his friends and family that he attempted suicide? I don't know, but probably not. Per the article, his Mom saw him only a few hours before this incident. We don't know what exactly (if anything) set him off here.
As for his talking on air about all his problems, I've heard him interviewed on (of all things NPR) about this very issue. He's said explicitly, that although he's acutely aware that being on the show sort of encourages him to act out because it makes for interesting radio, at the same time, talking about all his issues all the time is also therapeutic for him.

I bought Artie's ghostwritten book, too. He had a good writer, really got his tone very well from the tape recorder to the page so that I could hear him in my head which is the best way to do it. (Then again, Artie on the tape might have been the optimum guy to transcribe being and all he's a guy who lives by communication by mouth).
But I just wasn't going to spend $10-12 a month to 'subscribe' to radio.

Speaking from very little personal experience on the subject, I've heard that getting stabbed feels pretty much like getting hit, though I imagine that depends on being stabbed quickly. I've had minor stabbings (really just piercing damage from a hacksaw and screwdriver (messy breakup; don't ask)) that felt pretty much like that, but nothing major.

I saw someone get stabbed in the back and then beat the hell out of the guy that did it. Took him to the curb outside and the guy ran away. Someone mentions to him that he had been stabbed and he looks down at his side and sees blood and immediatly passed out.
Very different than doing the stabbing yourself and continueing to do it after 6 half stabs. He had to be high as hell on coke.

I can't comment on how Stern handled this incident since I didn't hear it. Again, I listen only sporadically. With the usual goombahs that call in, you'd expect some of them to try the "Artie stabbed himself. . .wahhhh" schtick. Maybe he let a few in to shut them down, or just to pre-empt an endless barrage of them.
In terms of how the move to satellite has helped the show, for one thing, there is simply less commercial time, and they can do longer bits/interviews uninterrupted. One thing about the show on ordinary radio was the never ending amount of commercials.
Next thing (and this is a bit harder to quantify), after the move to satellite, all the performers just seemed calmer to me. I think it had to do with them all getting nice raises, more vacation time, better studio and office space, etc.
In terms of specific censorship issues, I'd generally agree that radio censorship generally didn't interfere with what I'd consider to be his best material (with you, that being celebrity interviews).
Being on satellite has let them talk more explicitly about sexual topics. Sometimes that's interesting, though not always a benefit. There was a time when Stern would simply talk to porn stars. . .now he actually has them CREATE pornography on his set. . .not so good.
Sometimes, it can be interesting to hear the celebrities on the show using profanity (that would otherwise be censored).

I remember (and still sometimes quote from) the one scene where the girl was dating a boy whom Artie disliked, fearing he was a bad seed and a drop-out. The girl, trying to stick up for him said, "But Momma, he goes to high school!"

Stern's gift is definitely seen in the interview. As Ace mentions above, he'll ask the questions no one else will -- from the really personal to the really personal and crude.
His interviewees all balk at the questions, but Stern knows how to get them to answer the questions! Stern is tenacious and crafty and will continue to chip away until he finally gets them to answer his qusetions.

On getting stabbed, I was once stabbed in the leg with a pocketknife (not on purpose. . .don't ask).
It hurt. . .a little. . .not really very much. The gushing blood was really a lot more disturbing than the pain, but nothing a few minutes of direct pressure and sutures couldn't fix. The sutures hurt more than the actual stab wound.
What is REALLY supposed to hurt, (and fortunately I have no personal experience with this), is the VISCERAL pain of having an internal organ punctured (like the liver, etc).
Of course if you're high on heroin (as Lange liked to do), you're probably not going to feel even that.

Stern can get big movie stars to talk about their anal-intercourse experiences. That's a gift...or perhaps a curse.
And Howard Stern ALWAYS asks the guys about the size of their hogs.
He got Steve Guttenberg to talk about his wang and how he cleans his anus after he poops. That's, um, a gift.

Lange sustained six "hesitation wounds" and three deep plunges.
How do they know they happened in that order? Maybe he stabbed himself really good on the first three and then started getting really sleepy or something during the last six. He coulda been all "Shit, I thought I'd be dead by now" and stuff. He doesn't look like he got much exercise.
Or what if it was an accident? Maybe he was holding a knife in the kitchen and slipped. You know, maybe the floor was all slippery with... something really slippery and in goes the blade! Crap! Then he's making his way to the phone and Slip! Stab! Slip! Stab! Slip, slip. Stab, stab. Slip. Stab! That would fucking suck. Or maybe he was unloading the dishwasher and fell on the silverware rack.

The blog's always been a mix of political & "guy geek" commentary. Go to the archives, read the stuff from before mu.nu. If Ace of Spades HQ has changed in ANY way it's been to drift more towards being purely political than drifting any other way.
Jackie I can't stand. Just annoying. His writing may have kicked ass, but you were never sure because it was coming out of Howards mouth. His Jokeman schtick was just terrible.
Artie has become nothing but a syncophant. He must say, "The great thing about you Howard" a 100 times a show now.
Guy was born under a bad sign. Some people grow out of the type of problems he has. He's past that point. Unfortunate, but I don't think anyone can help him ultimately.
The shit with his father falling off the ladder and the aftermath probably has alot to do with it. Some people can handle tragedy like that, others can't. Not a question of him being a good or bad person. Weak? I don't know about weak- But def not as strong as he needs to be.

Completely off topic, but funnier than Howard Stern. From Hotair:
But the final irony is that many of the detainees may not even want to be transferred to Thomson and could conceivably even raise their own legal roadblocks to allow them to stay at Gitmo.
Falkoff notes that many of his clients, while they clearly want to go home, are at least being held under Geneva Convention conditions in Guantánamo. At Thomson, he notes, the plans call for them to be thrown into the equivalent of a “supermax” security prison under near-lockdown conditions.
“As far as our clients are concerned, it’s probably preferable for them to remain at Guantánamo,” he says.

Yeah, I can't get all torn up about making fun of a guy whose profession seems to be airing his personal problems on the radio.
Same as I couldn't get all wound up about folks making fun of the latest dead Kennedy. Or Tia Tequila's dead girlfriend. Or the dumb Bengal who got killed trying to do whatever the heck it was to his girlfriend.
Suicide is tragic. But choosing to lead a life as effed up as this guy has is not a tragedy, so I just can't drum up any sympathy for the guy.

I am a fan of the Howard Stern Show, so from my perspective, "thanks" to Ace for posting this.
Artie Lange, who is certainly not one of my favorite "characters" on the Show, is a very, very sick individual and I feel bad for him. He has been a heroin addict and an alcoholic for quite a while. He has, evidently, been lying to everyone about the success of his sobriety efforts over the past few months (no matter how unbelievable they were... no one really questioned them in any real, meaningful way). Hopefully, this will be the "rock bottom" or "wake up call" necessary for him to get the help he needs.
If anything, I really must say that I was disappointed in how Howard handled the matter. He basically, never mentioned what happened to Artie until Page Six finally (9 days later?) wrote an article about it (really great job for someone who prides himself as being as "honest" and "open" as possible with his listeners).
On his show today, he was forced to grudgingly admit that there was a suicide attempt and was angry that someone leaked the story to Page Six and that Page Six reported it. In his opinion, it was a family matter and he felt it was a shame that the family had to deal with everyone finding out what happened.
For a man (and show) that, on a daily basis, publicizes and ridicules the personal lives, scandals and miscues of celebrities, this hypocrisy was glaring. If this story had been about Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton, they would have taken an hour to talk about and laugh at the story. I appreciate that Artie and his family are "loved" by those on the Show, so it makes some sense why Howard would respond differently to Artie's problems. However, it doesn't make the hypocrisy any less real.
The only person on the show to even - at all- come close to acknowledging the hypocrisy was Robin (surprising bit of self-awareness, from the head narcissist - if you are a listener, you know what I am talking about). But, she stopped short of calling out Howard on his hypocrisy and agreed that it would be best to not even read the story aloud and to move on with the Show. That is not surprising as she rarely, if ever, challenges or contradicts Howard (a parrot could easily do her job).
I like The Howard Stern Show a lot, but I don't really hold Howard Stern on any pedestal like your typical fan. Neither he nor many other people on that show would I personally like to meet or be friends with. Howard is a psychological mess... (I somewhat like Gary and some of the bit players like JD, Richard, Lisa G, John Hein, but cannot stand Robin or Fred) but this was disappointing for me. Perhaps, what is more disappointing is that Stern admittedly has yet to see him or talk with him since the attempt. Supposedly, they are very close (according to Howard).
Yes, Howard Stern is very left wing (he regularly goes into screeds against Limbaugh and Pailin), but fortunately, his political rants do not dominate the show (unless he has Michael Moore or similar guests on).

Talk radio where I lived use to be so good. Now it sucks. Local radio canceled conservative programs or the radio hosts left. A number of so called conservative/libertarians came out as the liberals they really where. And they do nothing but bash Bush and conservatives. That idiot Bill Handel was bashing Dick Chaney today. I only caught it is passing but it reminded me why I detest him so much.
The only conservatives we have are Limbaugh, Levin, and Hannitty - none are local. The one local conservative is a relatively young gay guy by the name of John Phillips. He's pretty funny and is a true conservative. Glad to see his career progressing.

I agree with you. Artie makes a living (on the Howard Stern Show, in his stand-up routine and in his books) on talking about his very horrible lifestyle and life choices (e.g., drugs, alcohol, hookers, etc.) so it is hard to feel bad for talking about (or joking about) what just happened.
Moreover, if we were talking about the attempted suicide of some other celebrity, he would likely be standing in line to make fun of it. Sorry, love the Stern show, but that is what they do...they expose and ridicule celebrities' personal lives.
Posted by: Mark Green at January 07, 2010 01:59 PM (xeTBZ)
Artie is a heroin addict (and, I believe, alcoholic), so there is a good chance that the knife was taken to his midsection due, in some part, to the heroin.

The reason I'd followed him to Sirius was basically Artie. "I was a huge Stern fan that even followed him to satellite. The last couple of years I've just found him absolutely intolerable with his leftist-political bullsh*t. "
Cannot argue with that. He went from real libertarian to real liberal (some of it I blame on the marriage to Beth). But, for the most part, if you listen to the old shows he was really anti-republican as he identified republicans with the religious right (which really hated him and his show).
The reason I'd followed him to Sirius was basically Artie. I appreciated the Jakie Martling days as much as anyone with the stories and whatnot, but as far as I was concerned, Artie and his drama carried the show since 2003. Yeah he'd take the easy quip and sometimes push things too far, but he was often so damned quick-witted it was refreshing to listen to.
I go back and forth on Artie. Sometimes I really enjoy his story telling. However, I really dislike his old Jersey, Italian schtick sometimes. He is incredibly misogynistic ("broads", "honey" and "sweetie").
I miss Jackie because Jackie used to challenge Howard. Artie almost never challenges Howard (exception: the "bro fight"), constantly agrees with Howard ("you are so right" and "I agree with you Howard") and so often feeds Howard's ego ("Howard, the brilliance of your show is...", "You are so amazing at..."). Of course, this is what Howard likes (it has to be...Robin contributes almost nothing to that show...she is a freaking parrot). If Howard were to come out and say "Bruce Springsteen is a big fag whose music is a step above the Jonas Brothers", Artie would find some way to agree with him (and Springsteen is Artie's favorite musician)
This storythough, wow. I think everyone tragically might have been on Chris Farley watch with this guy, but to come to this? I understand where you are coming from, we should show more compassion and be a bit less nasty, but - and this is coming from someone who religiously listens to the show - this is what this guy does for a living. Artie, Stern and the rest spend 4 hours, 4 days per week exposing and discussing celebrity personal lives. They are constantly commenting on and ridiculing celebrities for their problems, their scandals and their miscues. If this was Lohan or Paris Hilton, they would have been saying much worse about their failed attempts.

I'm a Stern fan from before he "syndicated" and got on in Philly, too. In those days it was really risky to admit you were a fan at all. I didn't follow him to sattelite, it would have been my only reason and it wasn't a good enough reason. From the Sirius shows I've heard I'd have to agree that he was better when he had rules that he had to work around.
But I do feel for Artie. Forget whether he's funnier than Jackie, or whether he sucks up more or less than Robin. He's the latest in a long line of funny fat self-destructive guys. Belushi, Candy, Farley et.al. It's not our fault. We don't make them kill themselves in order to be funny. But they burn themselves from the inside out to get it, and we do laugh, sometimes a lot.

I wonder if Howard will pull out his old Donald Manes song parodies from the 80's in honor of Artie.
