— LauraW Darling of the international left, friend of Hollywood, and Fidel Castro's toy poodle
We've had dozens of arguments with lefties over the years about this nutter. They really expected great things of him, while we on the right were having the usual gut-rumbles about Communism.
Over ten years have gone by since he was first elected. Venezuela has been transformed by leftist statism in the expected way.
Wherever it gains nearly unopposed control of the organs of the state, leftism starts with a country that has problems (as all do), and ends up with an impoverished downward-spiraling shithole. Always.
Always.
The inflation rate in Venezuela is around 30%, corruption is rampant, and the national media are routinely bullied and censored by Chavez's government.
Police and courts in Venezuela have shown more of an interest in punishing Chavez's critics than prosecuting real criminals.
Henrique Capriles, governor of Miranda, a state encompassing parts of Caracas, told reporters last week Chavez worsened the problem by cutting funds for state and city governments led by political opponents, then removing thousands of guns from their police forces after losing regional elections.
An estimated 93% of murders are never even investigated.
So Venezuela is now one of the deadliest nations on Earth. Far more dangerous than Iraq, or any war zone in the world, for that matter.
And it's not even close. In 2009 in Iraq, there were 4,644 violent civilian deaths. In Venezuela, according to figures attributed to the Venezuela Observatory of Violence, the number was 16,047. Even that figure is probably on the low side. A leaked government report says the number is over 19,000.
The terrorized citizens' appeals for basic law enforcement have been answered with bullshit, not action.
President Chavez says Venezuela's capitalist past is to blame[emph. me -ed.] for the high crime rates"In the 1980s and 90s, the young had little access to education or work. Prisons began to overflow with young people, many of whom became involved in drugs and drug trafficking. Unfortunately, those habits continue," said Mr. Chavez.
Mr. Chavez says socialism will reduce inequalities - what he sees as the root cause of crime.
That darn capitalism (which somehow was competent enough to keep the violent crime rate down to a fourth of what Venezuela currently 'enjoys.'). That's what the problem is.
Socialism does indeed reduce inequalities. It has consistently reduced diverse people to roughly equal-sized piles of ashy bones the world over.
The photo below is a picture of the recent former Miss Universe. This very lovely and brave lady is holding up a pre-Chavez era Venezuelan flag during her final turn on the stage. This was an act of quiet protest against the Chavez regime.

Bitter clinger.
Oh, another thing about Chavez, lefties? Human Rights Watch. Not a fan.
Another glittering jewel in the crown of International Leftism. All easily predicted by the Right, ten years ago.
Well done, assholes.
Thanks to Jazz, over at Butter Chicken.

Could that be the change the left in this country was looking for? More murders?

I still hold that Barry should have been impeached after Honduras. The stinking cumguzzling ass-faced pieces of shit in the MFM still refer to Zelaya as President of Honduras, and call his ouster (for violating their laws) a "coup" despite the fact that it was ordered by their courts.
The MFM and the lefties will support anything they view as "left," it doesn't matter how illegal or immoral - they still make excuses for Mao and Stalin, for crying out loud.

That's not quite right. There are distinct haves, and have nots, in socialist states.
The difference is that in a socialist state you acquire power through loyalty to the party, not through any specific competence, and more importantly to the Left, the power you acquire is pretty much unlimited.
Liberals hate the idea that in our Republic, as envisioned,, if you don't want someone else to drive an SUV, all you can do is ask them not to. In a socialist state, you can take it from them, or even for yourself...

This is just another little rant on yet another - yes I have a few - pet peeve of mine;
A few decades ago, the U.S. sought redemption from a policy that it had carried out around the world, that of discreetly eliminating inconvenient leadership from countries where the U.S. sought to have sway.
Instead of eliminating scuzballs like Chavez and Achmeddimwitnutjob, we now have to look down the barrel of an outright war to get rid of these vermon infestations.
Seems like there should be a better way.
Just sayin'

There is a better way, the free market has to take up the banner against tyranny - but it's hard for people trying to scrape out a living under bureaucratic regimes to think in such long terms.
Someday, somebody's going to find a way to take up enough donations (or investments?) to "free" some of these people from their brutal leadership.
Maybe not yet, but maybe soon.

Everyone here was all excited she did that, I fortunately saw that live and couldn't believe it. The minister of justice here the other day was on TV saying that the whole crime thing in Venezuela is a matter of perception, that its not true that Caracas is violent, and the reporter asked " if its a matter of perception , how do you perceive it when you have an entourage of body guards and a cavalcade of police escorts?"
The interview was over.
There was this picture of the morgue in Caracas and it got the newspaper into a lot of trouble, the pic is the morgue overloaded with bodies from a weekend. the morgues cant process them fast enough.

Che is a hilarious example for the left. Born from a wealthy family, well educated he became a terrorist and ran Castro's political prison for awhile (600 prisoners murdered under his wardenship) He then decides to start his own revolution in Bolivia, where he did not speak the language of the people he was trying to "help" and eventually he got wacked by govt forces because a farmer was complaining about the nearby presence of bandits (Che's group).
His misadventures in the Congo before Bolivia are even funnier in a sad way, or is that sad in a funny way. Egypt's dictator Nasser told Che that "playing Tarzan" would not work before Che left for the Congo.

It is amazing how very rare individual freedom is. It has only existed on a wide scale in one country for a very brief period of time, and then only for about 3/4 of the population.
That was the U.S. from about 1790 until 1830. It didn't take long before the Constitution was subverted and Washington started running amuck.
I am not checking the dates but I believe that 1830 date is around the time of the tariffs of abomination.

And the crapweasel that is Obama worked pretty tirelessly to make that very thing happen in Honduras in '09. President Manuel Zelaya was the exiled Socialist tyrant-in-the-making who was breaking Honduran Constitutional law, and President SOBama, in agreement with co-Socialist Argentinian Chavez, aimed to reinsert Zelaya against everyone's will. SObama was undermining the very Constitution designed to prohibit the creation of a classical tinpot dictatorship characteristic of South America.
