— Gabriel Malor The Tea Party keeps on growing.
Twenty-four percent (24%) of U.S. voters now say they consider themselves a part of the Tea Party movement, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. ThatÂ’s an eight-point increase from 16% a month ago.Another 10% say they are not a part of the movement but have close friends or family members who are.
Forty-two percent (42%) of Republicans say they are part of the movement, compared to nine percent (9%) of Democrats and 24% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Thirty-five percent (35%) of Mainstream voters view themselves as Tea Party members, while 84% of the Political Class say they have no ties to the movement.
The Democrats are probably wondering why their hit-pieces in the legacy media are falling on deaf ears.

Actually, this website allows the right to pin *any and all* bad behavior on the lefties. No consequences to the right. Anything bad happens and "it was those 'crash the teaparty douchebags that did it'.

3 years ago I would have fallen for the racist/homophobe story line by the organs of the undemocratic party -- the MSM. Who the hell even believes the MSM anymore? They are the undemocratic party.
Thank God for the internet, people, centerist dems, conservative independents (which is most indepedents) can look up items on the Internet just to see how the MSM has lied, and deceived them.
I know that's what happened to me, the bias was so blatant, its pure propoganda now by the MSM. And I am one of those Independents/former dems in the 40% who make up part of the Tea Party movement.

This is the disconnect that keeps biting the LSM on the ass. They simply don't know what to make of it. The DC/NYC cocktail party circuit has always viewed regular Americans as uncultured cretins who need to be guided by our betters (i.e. them). The rejection of their "guidance" mortifies and mystifies them. Instead of trying to understand the drivers behind the movement, they strike out at it, failing at every turn.
Furthermore, I'm willing to bet that the 12% of the "Political Class" that actually have ties to the movement look upon those ties with either embarrassment or self righteous pity.

The left has a problem with this one. Applying Alinskyite tactics won't work. They can infiltrate and make a ruckus and the media will cover it and say, "See? We told you! They're raaaaacists!"
Those who will buy into it already have their minds made up. Fencesitters won't be swayed because in all liklihood they know someone who is either a supporter or an activist, and they know them not to be racists.
Underestimating the level of political awareness of Tea Partiers and the fact that the movement is cognizant of the media smear campaign will work to the disadvantage of the left.
Alinsky warned about going after ambiguious organizations, choosing instead to pick individual targets. A true grassroots movement is virtually immune to his tactics.

dagny -- I always considered myself a JFK democrat, I was one, b/c I do believe people need a hand up, but not a hand out. I don't have an issue with programs that wean people off welfare, etc to help them stand on their own. But what is now prevalent in the undem. party is they want people dependent on them. I am a social moderate, against gay marriage, but I am pro-choice, but want planned parenthood out of biz. That is why I was a democrat.
See, there was a time, when both the repubs, dems party believed in lower taxes, pro-America, pro-biz, pro-small biz, pro-military, pro-US consitution the foundation was the same, dems were more liberal on social issues, then after the 60s and forward that all changed. The dems of today no longer believe that, they are now the socialist democrat party who don't believe in America, don't believe in the founding principles, don't believe in indiv rights, don't believe in the Constition, have a real loathing of America.

But taxes go up or down depending on who's in power over time.
The real power behind the Tea Party comes from the defense of Liberty.
Freedom, once taken (even if quietly in the bowels of a do-gooder federal program) is VERY hard to win back.

On a (tangenitally) related note, Megan McArdle has just uncorked a real thumb-sucker of a post in which she neatly encapsulates why I don't take her or her commentary all that seriously. She's such a girl -- everyone should be nice, everyone should try to understand everyone else's point of view, and isn't it sad that everyone can't get along? Wah wah wah, squick squick squick. She's exactly the kind of "conservative" that liberals love to trot out as an example of those who are "tolerant" and "broad-minded": in other words, someone who is politically liberal, but market-oriented enough to fool the rubes.
She understands a lot of this herself: big-city born, big-city bred, swimming in an ocean of political-liberal pap from dawn to dark. You could fit what she knows about rural America into a thimble and have enough room left over for a dram of Johnny Walker Black.
I don't mean to bash on her too much, I guess. Like Ann Althouse (another Bigfoot believer), she means well and is certainly not a raving far-left nutter. But I'm not convinced that she's in any way conservative or even "libertarian" in any real sense, and I don't know why true libertarians like Insty pay much attention to her.
This relates to the tea-party movement because I hear a lot of the "dispense with the social conservatism stuff!" coming from tea partiers as well as Megan. But if you replace "social conservatism" with "culture", you see the problem: a fragmented culture cannot support a robust civilization. Money is important to many people, but it's not what they're about, and I think this is the essential insight that escapes so many "libertarians".
I am liberal enough to agree that prostitution should be illegal, but conservative enough to think that you should be ashamed for using one. Just because I don't think it is the government's business to regulate every personal interaction in your life does not mean that I condone all of those actions. The public square (I aver) ought to be an inherently socially-conservative place -- out of sheer politeness and care for others' feelings if nothing else. And I think shame is a good regulator for that kind of behavior. The kicker being, of course, that people have to be able to feel shame -- the liberal argument seems to be to do away with shame entirely, which seems to me to be a toboggan-ride to hell.

Clinton was a Democrat through and through, but he was also a true politician- he would do literally anything to remain popular. When the nation very obviously chose to veer right in 1994, he moderated, and enjoyed excellent approval ratings and took credit for things the GOP Congress had campaigned on.
Barack Obama and his group, I feel, are "true believer" Democrats and as such will not moderate in the name of political vitality- their radicalism and blind full-speed-ahead attitude towards an explosion in taxes, debt and spending will not be tempered even with a GOP landslide in November- hence why WE MUST ENSURE IT IS A LANDSLIDE.
Someone, please, kick Thompson and Pataki out of their comatose hazes and get them to run so we have a 52-48 Senate!

It's been pointed out before, but it bears repeating, that the "mandate" for health insurance purchase might just be expected to fail in court. In fact, it may be there specifically for the court challenge and the opportunity it represents.
When the courts ( most likely) strike down that section of the health care reform package (but not the whole bill, just that section), it will be pointed out that congress cannot compel commerce between private individuals, but government can tax for services it provides, thus bringing about a "court mandated" public option. If this works, democrats will laugh their asses off that a so-called conservative court brought socialized medicine to America.
At least, that's my fear, ever since I read this scenario.

I understand why a popular national grassroots movement *with public protests* is a new phenomenon, and it also seem plain why its happening NOW, but it hardly seems to me the ideas that Federal spending and regulation are way out of control is particularly new to American political thought.

Clinton was in fact a far left liberal. He was forced to reign it in by the Republican congress. The media tries to give him credit for being a moderate and "reforming welfare" all the time.
There are a few people who actually believe it too.

Nope.
The court can't "mandate" a public option, it has to be legislated. Since there is no current provision for it in the bill (even though the bill is designed to bankrupt private insurance companies so they can legislate one later) the court can either strike down that portion of the bill, strike down the whole bill in toto, or come up with some fuzzy headed decree that says it's constitutional even though it clearly isn't. The court can't then go on to say, "Well since this is unconstitutional were going to add a public option".
Either way the legislature would have to take it up again, and public option doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of passing the Senate now.

If a fake-racist or a actual racist show up at the tea-party - all the AP has to do is link it to Scott Brown.
The media are looking for anything they can use to destroy the Republican party.
The tea parties are 95% regular folks with a few nut cases there to ruin it. Now the nut cases will increase with the deceptive left bad actors. Reality: republicans have to be careful. The State run media are watching.
(the same state run media could care less about bloody crazy Bush=Hitler signs and the linkage to crazy democrats and 9/11 troof.)

Uh, Charlie? Sen. Brown? You really don't have anything better to do on Tax Day. It would be, uh, imprudent to not show up at the rally - especially *if you've been personally freaking invited*.
My understanding is Brown is trying to avoid being painted with the "eeew! Hangs out with Palin!" brush, since Massholes are twitchy about social issues and she's been successfully portrayed as "right-wing Bible-thumpin' gay-hater" despite any actual evidence of gay-hatin'.

Well, I've heard that myself, and it gives me some comfort, but it's not the decision that bothers me, but the effect.
I'm not a lawyer, and I'm going competely on memory, but what of the following (and again, I don't mind being corrected, just not insultingly so):
Did Brown v board of education mandate school bussing, or find "separate and unequal" education existed?
In Roe v. Wade, didn't the court essentially find that doctor and patient have a right to privacy. But the net effect was to legalize abortion, because one couldn't prove conspiracy to commit a crime?

Or Bible thumping.
When did Palin ever publically espouse any particular religious viewpoint?
IIRC, she said she was fine with the teaching of evolution in schools, which is probably as good a litmus test as any for fundamentalist nuttiness.

Scott Brown owes it to the TEA party to be there.
Look: Brown isn't particularly conservative. On most issues, he's right there with Voinovich and the two ladies from Maine. And you know what? That's okay. Brown probably doesn't care much for Limbaugh, Beck, or Sarah Palin. That's okay. He's a Republican who took Saint Teddy's seat, and that's enough for me to give him a pass on almost anything else he might do (or not do) during his tenure. He's probably antsy about being identified too closely with the Tea Party folks -- he's got to run for re-election in a notoriously deep-blue state pretty soon, remember. Now, I'm usually the first guy to ding pols for having no spine (fuck you, Stupak), but in this case I'd rather have an R occupying one of Massachusetts' Senate seats. That is a pearl of great price and not lightly cast away.

I think you're giving too much credit to the LSM in their ability to shape public perception regarding the Tea Party movement.
If no one is paying lefty infiltrators to show up, they will be few and far between. The LaRouchites and Paul bots will always be hovering around the fringe and so far the only people that truly believe that they are representive of the movement at large are folks like Chuckles the clown.
Listen. If the lie perpetrated by the media about the N-bomb being dropped on the CBC during their Selma reenactment didn't damage the movement, a few nutcases and plants holding up ignorant signs ain't gonna do it either.
Go to your local Tea Party. Relax. Be counted. Have fun being surrounded by people who share your concerns. If you see a plant or a nutjob, shun him.

No Brown found that separate but equal (Plessy) was "inherently unequal" based on zero evidence but it did not "force busing".
Busing was developed after the civil rights act as a remedy for not meeting the quotas.
As for Roe it expanded on an already existing finding on privacy to say that "early term" abortions could not be prohibited.

71 Once the individual can no longer police themselves through ideas of shame/morality/ethics/civility, the individual has to be policed by a societal overseer.
And the sheepdogs get turned into police dogs as a matter of necessary evolution and psychological reaction.
Moral of the story: it's a bad idea for sheep to start getting visions of turning into wolves...it doesn't end well.

I agree and I certainly didn't vote for him. However, I didn't get the sense from him that he HATED the U.S. that I get from Obama. BUT he didn't hate and fear Americans the way Obama does.
Imagine taking Barry (back before he became an Elected Official Person with an entourage) and Bill to a county fair. We'll even pick a nice Blue state like Minnesota or Massachusetts.
Bill would be shoveling down funnel cakes and corn dogs, winking at the underage girls, laughing his ass off at the racing pigs, and generally having a hell of a time.
Barry would be afraid of getting something on his shoes. He'd see a horde of racists getting ready to lynch him. He'd be nauseated by the smell of fattening, unhealthy food. He'd get a headache and go home early.

It might be worth remembering he's a Romney guy. If he avoids this party, he avoids having to defend Romney and RomneyCare.
I'd rather Brown attended, but I also criticize Obama for constantly throwing his friends under the bus. I can't very well argue that Brown should give up Romney so quickly.
Until Romney leaves the national stage, Brown's going to have to walk this tightrope.

But it does fall into one of those what if categories. This time what if....
A black female fundraiser for the NAACP and her boyfriend were exiting a fundraiser at a restaurant and they were jumped by a hoard of white thugs who beat them because they were wearing NAACP buttons?
The city would be cordoned off and the national guard would be patrolling while the FBI did a massive hunt for the evil hate crime perps.

Much as I hate RomneyCare and Romney generally, you have to take what you can get in this state. Brown was better than Coakley would have been, and he's a 41st vote to maintain a filibuster when it really matters.
