— Dave in Texas 200 miles southwest of Santiago.
Tsunami warnings generated for Chile and Peru across all Pacific islands and the Pacific rim, including most of Central and South America and as far as Australia and Antarctica.
Article says the biggest one ever recorded in Chile, a 9.5 in 1960 generated waves that killed as far away as Hawaii, the Philippines, and Japan.
DrewM.: Having spent some time in Chile I just wanted to add a few thoughts.
First, Chileans are some of the nicest people I've ever met. They are friendly, kind, hard working and almost everyone I met loved America. They are also a very proud people.
Second, this is an area that has suffered from earthquakes before. Walking through Santiago you notice a strange mix of buildings in terms of styles and age. When I asked about it I was told that it was because when earthquakes, some survived and some collapsed. When they collapsed, new ones were put up giving you this odd mix of buildings.
Reminders of the power of nature, especially geological are all over the country. I went up into the Andes and you can drive off into huge side canyons. There were boulders that were the size of office buildings and dozens of them in each canyon. It was amazing.
On a political note...they are not all that far removed from the Pinochet dictatorship. They are very proud of the political and economic progress they have made and rightly so.
It's a quirky and in someway strange country but for the most part it's a beautiful and welcoming one. I pray they will be ok.

8.8 is one big ass earthquake. Tsunami may hit Hawaii by 11:00 local time.
Started snowing again last night -- got three more inches. We must have gotten 24 inches by now.

The article stated that the earthquake was 22 miles below the surface. Would the damage have been even worse if the depth was half that much?

We just had an earthquake off of Okinawa [6.9] the other day, so I figured there'd be a 'follow up' quake on the other side of the 'Ring of Fire'.
But this fast? And this big?

40 hours? No way. Esp. with a big earthquake in Japan recently, plus Haiti. It's perfectly clear that the fault (ha) lies with the big evil country up north.
And by perfectly clear, I mean "clear" only to people in Hollywood who think it's because we are thinking about drilling for oil in Alaska.

I was in Concepción a little over a year ago. Chile is actually the most free, democratic and prosperous nation in Latin America by most measures and according to agencies and NGOs that measure those sort of things. (Funny how freedom and prosperity seem to coincide.) I think there's less chance of aid sent by generous Americans to Chile being squandered or stolen than in many other places in the world, you know, like the U.N.

HARRY REID TRIED TO SPLIT CONSERVATIVE VOTE WITH FAKE TEA PARTY CANDIDATE:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is running scared - and now he's sunk to a new low!
Falling increasingly behind in the polls, Reid's cronies have reportedly launched a fake new "Tea Party" political party being formed to help Harry Reid save his re-election bid.
The fake "Tea Party" is apparently a scam to split the conservative vote in November, and thus provide a means for Reid to win re-election.
The leader of this fake "Nevada Tea Party" is a 2008 Obama supporter who represents male porn star John Wayne Bobbitt. Remember him? His wife was Lorena Bobbitt, and she made an alteration to his body below the belt - enough said.

The NW sides of the islands should fare pretty well, I'd think, but I don't know much about tsunamis.
Are the 0600 sirens informational - is that when everyone will find out who has to go?
Best to you...

Wonder if it is the fact he is talking about ramming a huge entitlement through Congress when they whole country only cares about the economy.
If Obama had been as smart as the MSM likes to think he is, he would have spent his first year on nothing but the economy. Then once, things started to improve, fed us his socialist dream of universal healthcare piece by piece (boiling the frog), until by his 4th year the entire evil plan would be in place and we wouldn't know what hit us.
To go for it all at once is like asking a girl to marry you at the end of the first date. Even if she likes you, chances are she will say no (and think you are a bit nuts).

7.7 feet will grow by at least a factor ten, if I recall correctly.
Posted by: eman at February 27, 2010 10:34 AM (D7/BU)
Depends on the underwater topography. Deep ocean close to shore=epic tsunami fail. Nice gradual shallowing=kiss your ass goodbye. 7.7 feet is the height above mean sea level, so it's a minimum of double that, as it's a classic sine wave.
The best place to observe a tsunami is from Ohio.

1 Earthquakes are caused by climate change. Climate change is caused by Bush. Bush's fault!
AHAH! You see, the circle is now complete. Yes, it is obvious that Bush is responsible for global warming and that the quake was caused by the earthquake satellite. This much is certain.
But since our planet is so rapidly heating up, Bush told Cheney (the real director of the CIA) to press the red, candy-like button to cause the quake to trigger all the volcanoes on the eastern side of the Pacific rim to erupt, thereby sending enough particulate into the atmosphere to reduce global temperatures by the 15 or so degrees celsius they've risen since 1998 when Halliburton started ramping up the global thermostat.
Ultimately, this is all a very involved plot to stick it to Al Gore.

Not an Ark, just hoping for The UFO. And hoping I am allowed on it. I can't make a fuckin sock, an Ark for me would be a log that may or may not float.
I wish coastal area homes had giant poles in the ground with survival kits and emergency inflatable rafts in them. When alarms sound, go to the giant pole, hook up the hardcore toughest most durable inflatable raft 21st century technology can make to it somehow, put on your swim fins and 02 tanks and get ready for the scary ride. Hope the cord is strong enough and long enough to stay attached to the pole that is somehow strong enough to stay put. Drink the beer (fine, water then), eat your SPAM & keep your weapons handy that were in the survival kit and pull your way back to the house that optimally has a retractable waterproof dome over it. If not, at least you're back home and hopefully have enough food and beer in the main survival kit buried next to the pole to last for a while until relief can get to you.
I have other craptastic goofy ideas for firestorm path homes like those in SoCal. Please don't call me names. I am sensitive. Not a good thing for an HG Wells wannabe with severely limited utilization of a third of his IQ. Unfortunately for me, that's how I roll. Even more unfortunate for wifey-poo.

Valparaiso is a great old town. Kind of like San Francisco with the hills and beautiful view of the Pacific. It's a very old and famous port city. They actually did an episode of The Amazing Race there that aired last week.
It's about 90 minutes down a very modern highway from Santiago. It's just up the road from a place called Viña del Mar which is a resort town with a neat little casino.

I had to explain it was sort of like a country on 'island time'. The difference was it did get done (unlike real island culture) just on it's own pace of things.

You're going sideways on it. Pyramids are for hurricane management. Ever hear of a hurricane in Egypt?
What's needed for earthquake management is a huge pentagram shaped building with lots of brasswork inside it. If no brasswork is available, many persons wearing brass bits on em can do the trick in a pinch.

When I was there it was this exact time of year (I just looked at my passport, it was exactly 6 years ago yesterday), and it's basically Labor Day weekend there. It's the end of summer and the rainy season is coming, it's like snow for them.
The first day it rained the place basically shut down. I asked what was going on and was told, "it's the first rain storm of the year, people forget how to drive in the rain so everything is slow and people are crashing".
I guess I'll have to reconsider my plan to learn Spanish someday so I can retire there.

Do you know the pedestrian mall area in downtown Santiago? It's always packed. I'm 6'5" tall and the whitest guy in the world. I literally stood out there but never once felt threatened or concerned. Got some odd looks but usually accompanied by a friendly wave or smile.

The waves tossed around locomotive engines like they were my nephew's Thomas toys.
Yeah, it's not just the water that you have to worry about, it's all the incredibly heavy shit that gets picked up and tossed around inside the wave. After Ike the area north of Bolivar Point looked like it had been scraped flat and the debris pile was about 20mi inland. They finally found the last remains in the pile a few weeks back.

The former vice president apparently finds it inconvenient even to answer calls to testify before the U.S. Senate. You can call him Al . . . but he won't call back.
Gore has yet to respond, but that didn't prevent him from causing a stir at Apple's shareholder meeting Thursday. According to CNET, Gore was seated in the first row while several stockholders bashed his high-profile views on climate change. One reportedly said Gore "has become a laughingstock. I was at a cafe with a co-worker who had just gotten into the country, I'd been there a month or so. A guy came up to us and asked if we were Americans. My co-worker was a little nervous because we were about a year into Iraq and he wasn't sure what this meant. I had a better feel for things and said, yes we were. The guy asked if he could shake my hand. I did and he walked away. I called him back and asked what was up with that. He said, he loved America and always wanted to shake the hand of an American.
Second story...a motorcade goes blowing through lights. I asked my guide who that was and he says, 'it's the American ambassador'. I was pretty shocked he go to run lights like that and my guide said of course he did, he was the 2nd most important man in the country behind their President. I was shocked to say the least. Then he told me all about the ambassador and was shocked I had no clue who the guy was. I looked it up when I got home and the guy was some career foreign service officer that couldn't have gotten a good table at a DC restaurant.

If Pinochet had not crushed the socialists, Chile would be another Cuba / Venezuala / whatever by now. Allende was just another evil socialist. When Chavez and Castro step down, and their countries make the transition to prosperous democracies, then we can talk about how bad Pinochet was.

hey all, a quick update
all the starbucks are closed, we are in mililani, on a hill, in the center of the island and the cowards are closed and i need a cigarette bad
all the gas stations everywhere are jammed, people are buying out all the water and propane everywhere, i don't think they know this isn't a hurricane and they should let the people in the low lying coastal areas do their thing first
here on oahu, they are getting ready to stop the sewage pumps so they don't get damaged since they pump to 2 miles off shore so surfing in sewage woohoo
they are still saying 9 feet on oahu and 12 to 15 on the big island, the north shore and west shore (where i live they are strongly suggesting to evacuate)

Oh geez, they are trying to get the surfers out of the water via helicopters and megaphones. They keep saying "this is not a surf able wave" Duh
Can't cure stupid. Where are you seeing this, curious?

Yup, they are expecting maybe 2-3 footers in the LA area in the next hour or so. Probably lots of surfers out there, too. Nothing to be alarmed about though, as far as I can tell.

Of course The Black Hills of South Dakota are still a bit chilly this time o' year...and it ain't real convenient to Hawaii, but it's the thought that counts, right? Sunny and 40's, today... No tsunamis, no earthquakes...but it does get kinda cold once in awhile...
Been a long time since I visited the "Ki." Hawaii's a strange ride, but beautiful scenery, beaches, mountains, cliffs...and the people ain't so bad, either.

I always thought it was pronounced Chee Lay.

I haven't said anything about it being dangerous or not. Except I do think that surfers should not be in the water and if you live on the coast common sense says go to the high ground. I'm just putting up links so people can follow it. It is historic.

I believe it is. A surfer rides a wave that gradually builds up into a crest. A tsunami wave doesnt gradually build. It rolls everything in front of it up like a carpet and will suck the sea out shortly before its arrival as a huge wall of water.

Something to consider. As bad as this is, at least now the Pacific Islands are warned and ready. Even if the waves are nothing much, it doesn't mean that the next time wouldn't be catastrophic.
And I would always want to be way over prepared then under prepared for any kind of emergancy.

A broadside from the Missouri, that's what.
Battle stations. Big wave in 15 minutes.

It might not be bad head on, but in a river or a harbor it could be. I cant remember offhand what those sort of waves are called.
Somebody put me some knowledge here.

LOL!! Reminds me of this idiot-girl we hired a few years ago who asked me one day if she needed a passport to go to Hawaii. I said, no, it's actually on of our 50 states. Yeah, she said, but it's like across the water. She didn't last long in the job.

True freedom means that one has freedom to be stupid.
A man died in a flood and when he arrived to meet Saint Peter he was angry that God had let him die. St Peter said that God first sent the National Guard in a truck and offered to take him to safety, then when the water was to his doorstep, God sent the Rescue Squad in a boat. When the man was stranded on his roof, God sent a Coast Guard helicopter and again help was refused. St Peter said "You refused God's help three times, what more do you want?"

@128: "That [130 foot tsunami] would be the largest wave ever known."
To quote John Bender - "Not even close, bud"
It wouldn't even be 10% as tall as the biggest recorded wave - 1,720 feet tall.
