— Ace Does that name ring a bell? It should. Pantano became a cause celebre when, as a Marine in Iraq, he was accused of murdering two Iraqi insurgents -- but charges were dropped. It appeared to be a political move to appease the Iraqis in the first place.
Geraghty puts the seat, though, in the 99 possible pick-ups:
Mike McIntyre, North Carolina: This seven-term Democrat would be safe in an ordinary year, but he felt enough pressure back in his district to vote against the health-care bill. GOP challenger Ilario Pantano, a police officer, raised $103,000, which is more than McIntyre did; the district rates an R+8 on the Cook PVI.

In NC-4 a doctor named Lawson won the primary campaigning against Obamacare which Price voted for.
In NC-2 a RN named Renee Elmers won the primary campaing against Obamacare which Etheridge voted for. the year of the conservative woman indeed.
Now old Geraghty is not calling these seats in play but when you go against 80% of the district you seat is in play.

If it happens, I think the campaign will effectively end, since the D will have just ended his chances of victory and indeed his political career.

We have an interesting race brewing here in Nov.
Jean Schmidt's (R) (and not a fan) is being challenged by this kid (and I mean that literally) that was on the Apprentice. Ooooof course. Following in Obama's American Idol style presidency.
Chili (as he likes to call himself out) beat out another psycho in the primar last night (who has run as a Dem, Indie, and Repub in the past) . Psycho had a healthy lead. Until last week when the local Dems pulled their support for him. Apparently psycho made some off-the-cuff comments about this kid's name. He landed on Olbermann's Worst Person of the World schtick and it was hilarity from there when he then went after Olbermann.
Still, Schmidt takes this district in off years for Republicans so it's not even worth me dumping $$$ into. (Plus, she's pretty much a hag).
It's just fun to think they can pull their Obama style campaign of a hip/fresh/all about change candidate a second time around.

You have to be fair to a Democrat who is as nonoffensive as Pantano's opponent, Mike McIntyre.
Sometimes I wonder if a deal could be made with a Blue Dog, if the district is such that otherwise a Commiecrat might take it.

We shouldn't criticize McIntyre for things he didn't say. Target your criticism where it belongs: Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, MoveOn, et al.
We agree you shouldn't pre-emptively slur a political opponent, so let's not be guilty of the same ourselves.

In an ideal world, true.
In reality, the left keeps dragging the standards lower and lower. We can either play by the rules they appear willing to play by, or we can concede the advantage to them in some odd concept of chivalry.
Besides, no one has actually attacked him for it. Just said it's a near certainty that he will go that route.

Sometimes, however, it's good politics to poison the well to pre-empt your opponent ever making the slur against you. "Man, it was hell when the very Iraqis whom I put my life on the line to defend made wholly false and baseless charges against me for political reasons. I have to hope that my opponent is too smart, too honest and too fair to stoop to the same level."

They kill civilians AND troops alike, without any second thoughts. Meh. Could happen - but in New Bern (which is north of where Pantano is running for office), they recently elected a guy to the Board of Aldermen who shot a man and did time in prison for it. There was plenty of accusations and name-calling - initially, the candidate claimed that he had been "exonerated", but ultimately admitted that, while he had gotten out of prison early and, much later, received a "pardon of forgiveness" from the governor of N.C, he was not exonerated. Much was made of that, but he managed to win, anyway.
I have no doubt that Ilario Pentano will catch all sorts of hell from his Democrat opponent. Remember, though, that he's been through hell already. I predict that he'll dish out as good as he gets.

BLACK votes.
They don't show, it is a lock.
People up North have no clue about winning a seat, when you start off with 20-30% of the vote against you. That means you have to win 60% or more of the White vote to win.
Jesse Helms won more than that, even against a Black candidate.
This is doable.
