— Ace Obamaland's experiencing some change.
First of all, Kirk's bringing in some nice money through fundraising.
Republican U.S. Senate nominee Mark Kirk raised $2.2 million since the start of the year, his campaign announced Wednesday. The figure is the first fundraising total released since the five-term North Shore congressman won the nomination Feb. 2. Kirk faces Democratic state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias for the Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama. It's currently occupied by appointed Democratic Sen. Roland Burris, who is not seeking election.
With the infusion of cash, Kirk's campaign said it has more than $3 million left ahead of the November election.
Giannoulis declined to release his own figures, which may indicate either he's not doing too well or he's getting a lot of money from his mobbed-up mob-bank. Or both.
Giannoulis' bank, however, may be going under soon:
Asked if the problems at the Giannoulias family-owned Broadway Bank would affect the candidate's voter support in the Senate contest, Madigan replied, "I'm glad I don't have any deposits there."Federal regulators have said the bank must be recapitalized or it could face a takeover this month. Giannoulias had touted his banking expertise in running for treasurer in 2006.
That's a Democrat making fun of Giannoulis' nearly-bankrupt mob-bank, note.
Vote for me -- I managed to bankrupt a bank, so I know all the pitfalls our nation's finances face.
Kirk has 37 percent support overall while Giannoulias has 33 percent, Public Policy Polling has found. The Republican has gained little in terms of favorable voter opinion since the pollster found him with 27 percent of voters viewing him positively in January; he is still unknown to 53 percent of voters, and 24 percent continue to not have enough information to form an opinion of him.The congressman, however, is reaping the benefits of a drop in popularity for Giannoulias, who lost 10 points in terms of favorability since the last survey. The Democrat, facing controversy over bad loans approved by his family's bank, now has only 21 percent of voters thinking of him in a positive light, and 28 percent, up from 19 percent, viewing him negatively.
Kirk, a five-term representative, has more support from his party than does Giannoulias. He enjoys 77 percent support among Republicans, while his rival has 54 percent support from Democrats. Moreover, 36 percent of Democratic voters are undecided about whether to support Giannoulias.
...
Giannoulias, 34, is facing questions about his role in $20 million his family's bank is said to have lent to criminals.
There's a good chance the Democratic Party will attempt another last-minute substitution. Primaries are, in the Democratic Party, only the first draft of candidacy.
In the gubernatorial race, Republican Brady leads incumbent Democrat Quinn.
n a new poll from Dem-leaning Public Policy Polling, Brady's leading Quinn 43-33 and garnering 80% of the GOP vote. Quinn, meanwhile, has just 53% of the Democratic vote.33 percent! And he's an incumbent!

Bank failures are all Bush's fault.
And the economy is improving as demonstrated by the unexpected nature of damn near everything. Even rising interest rates are the sign of good things. Ditto oil prices. And near miss asteroids. And bank failures--really fantastically good stuff--think leeches on diseased blood. Or something.
The glass is half full, heretics.

Imagine this ...
of the seats currently or formerly held by the leadership of the Democrats there is a better than even possibility that the GOP will win:
Obama's old Senate seat
Bidens old Senate seat
Reids current Senate seat
and Pelosi will lose her Speakership
add to that the GOP currently holding the "Kennedy seat" in the Senate ...

GOP'S HAYES KICKED OUT BY UNIVERSITY PARK Â’S
MAYOR McCOWAN
CHICAGO: The following statement was released today by Citizens for Isaac Hayes, campaign committee for Illinois 2nd Congressional District Republican nominee Isaac Hayes, after being kicked out of a private event by University Park Mayor Alvin McCowan.
On April 7, 2010, Republican nominee Isaac Hayes and staff attended a networking event at the University Golf Club in University Park, IL, at the invitation of the event sponsor, Ms. Jennifer Day of ‘Daylight Media’. Mr. Hayes agreed to sponsor a table at the event based upon the invitation which specifically included “Politicians & Elected Officials.” Additionally, Mr. Hayes’ name was listed with other political candidates slated to attend, though listing the wrong office sought: “Political Candidates – William Dock Walls, Running for Governor, Isaac Hayes, Running for Senator, Rainbow Push Executive Staff, South Suburban Mayors, Aides & Staff…”
After Hayes spent approximately one hour interacting with other attendees, the Village Manager David Sevier approached Hayes’ Campaign Coordinator, George Pearson. According to Pearson, the Village Manager communicated “he was concerned about our being present at this function.” Following this conversation, Mr. Sevier angrily walked away and began to frantically make phone calls to unknown persons. Moments later, Mayor Alvin McCowan approached Mr. Hayes and abruptly asked him to “leave the premises immediately!” After putting his hand in Mr. Hayes’ face, the Mayor fiercely walked away to find the event’s host, Ms. Day. Having been brought to tears by the Mayor for allowing a “Republican” to sponsor a table, Day began clearing the table of all campaign materials.
“I guess this Mayor doesn’t believe his community has a right to decide for themselves, considering Rainbow Push’s material was placed in full sight and not taken down,” said Pearson. “If Jesse Jackson Jr. had a sponsored table here tonight it would be business as usual.”
The campaign’s white staff members present believes the Mayor’s discrimination was targeted toward them. Hayes said he definitely saw an alarming display of hate. “The way my staff and I were treated by the mayor is reminiscent of the 1950’s, with a ‘No Republicans Allowed’ sign,” said Hayes.
Mr. Pearson added, “Once our materials were removed from our originally assigned central location, we were then asked to move to the back of the room.” They were replaced by a tobacco vendor. “It’s apparent the Democratic officials believe alcohol and tobacco are more important than freedom of choice and speech.”
Mr. Hayes pointed out that on March 27th he attended a gala sponsored by the League of Women Voters Park Forest Area at the same facility without incident. According to him, the difference between then and now is “a group of thugs who are operating in Chicago-way bully politics. They may own the facility, but it belongs to the people.”
Hayes demands that Mayor McCowan “personally apologize to me and more importantly, my staff for the embarrassment and humiliation they experienced by having to remove all literature, take off campaign buttons and stop exchanging cards at a networking event, all as a room full of people looked on.”
Hayes also calls on Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. to “step up to the plate and repudiate this discrimination and intolerance of American citizens. Otherwise, I will take his silence as an endorsement of treatment his father fought to end more than forty years ago.”

I sent this story to Ace this morning but it looks like he is not going to use it so IÂ’ll post it now. It is from The State Newspaper out of Columbia, SC. It mentions a lot of names in this ongoing war against Steele and I thought you may want to use it to follow up on the column you did the other day.
Note that the name Katon Dawson crops here. I had never heard of this guy before but someone mentioned him in the comments for your column and asked what I thought about him. My concern would be that he is some kind of stalking horse for Lindsey Graham.
Note also that this newspaper is little more than a PR rag for the State Democrat Party.

I remember him from the voting. The knock on him (I am not taking a position on the truth of the matter, just the perception) is that he has some (supposed) racial baggage. He was motivated to go into politics by being subjected to racial desegregation (and busing) as a kid and he belonged to an all-white (or no black?) country club for a long time, until he pressured them to admit blacks.
He has some family-owned business but has spent much of his life as a career party guy. I don't think he's held public office or started his own business.

My recollection was (this is from back when Steele was elected) that the timing was suspect. I think Dawson was in the club for quite a while before the thing became an issue and that at that point he joined others in saying they should admit blacks.
The desegregation thing is potentially more damaging because it's in his own words that that was what motivated him to go into politics. Again, I think you could interpret it as him being more bothered by the busing part, but the quote I read is a little too close to "why can't we whites just have our own schools?"
I don't know the guy, but at the time that was troubling and seemed like something to avoid.
The thing that bothered me more was that he just seems to be a professional schmoozer. Just a well-connected guy in South Carolina whose skills may or may not translate to running the national organization. And at the time, a lot of us were thinking the RNC chair would have more of a front-man role.

"Giannoulias served as the chief loan officer of Broadway Bank from 2002 to 2006. During that time, Broadway’s lending in risky construction and development loans increased sixfold, to $356 million.During Giannoulias’ tenure, Broadway also sharply increased its brokered deposits or “hot money”, which generally command much higher interest rates, and thus are more expensive for the bank. When Giannoulias left the bank in 2006, brokered deposits made up 80% of all deposits at Broadway."
So by my estimates, that bank was having serious troubles by 2005 and likely even by 2004 after he was at the helm of the lending side of the bank. He was active in areas of lending he did not know about and then he was papering over the short term problems with brokered deposits (almost always a bad sign), so he could kick the can down the road. I know his job, but he didn't know his job. He ONLY was looking at the quarterly bottom line.

But no one says you can't make a dysfunctional recursive algorithm that only calls itself and has no trivial solution, technically the function only has to call itself to be "recursion". Practically worthless, unless your goal is to quickly crash your machine.

Brady's got a very good chance against Quinn. Quinn's screwed: state's in debt beyond its ass and he's made some very unpopular tax increase announcements at the same time he's touted social welfare programs -- then there's that bullshit hostage taking of the IL State Veteran's grant. Quinn's a socialist, prissy prick. I will cheer the day he's cooked this November.
Kirk is troubling. Honestly, the Dems don't need to win this one -- the state's in bad shape, so any incumbent for the next 3 election cycles (at least) will have to worry about being re-elected); plus Kirk's a squish and could likely wind up making Graham look like a hard core conservative. The Dems don't really lose not having Gino smearing their party and a Republican in there that will do more to piss conservatives off than Gino probably could. Besides, who will be Kirk's fellow IL senator, his senior? That's right -- fucking Dick, that's who. Durbin will end up doing something to neutralize Kirk at home if Kirk goes conservative nationally.
That's if the Dems don't wait until late summer to trot out cap and tax to shove into the national spotlight...and then Gino has to go due to "ethical concerns"...and bingo "what was that bill you voted for Mark Kirk?" (because Kirk isn't getting out there and getting known to the IL voters, if he waits, they will do this, and then the only thing anybody will ever know about him right before election day is "cap and trade").

Levin going off on Senator Coburn again. You would think that very conservative states such as Texas, Oklahoma, Utah, etc. would elect the right people to set off the moderate republicans, but we can't seem to do it. Sigh...
Coburn has always found ways to do the right thing and then turn around and say something that just really pisses everyone off. He still votes conservatively, though and I guess that's where it really counts. Just wish he'd keep his mouth shut sometimes.

9 At this point though, I don't know who the Dems can bring in to replace the mobster. Maybe Alan Keyes?
I'm not sure if somebody mentioned this upthread 'cause I've just skimmed the comments, BUT Illinois State Senator Susan Garrett (Dem) was being hyped as the replacement for Scott Lee Cohen/Lt. Gov candidate (he was the Dem pawn shop owner who allegedly held a knife to his girlfriend's throat).
The Illinois Dems eventually chose Sheila Simon for the Lt. Gov position (her father was Paul Simon, a Dem US Senator from IL back in the day). However, it looked to me like the Dems were pulling out all their likely female elected officials and seeing which one would best suit each position. As Ace noted, for Illinois democrats, the primary is just round one, then the power brokers go behind closed doors and replace the primary winners with (perceived) better candidates.
Susan Garrett is a resident of Chicago's north shore (same as Kirk) and would be much harder to beat.

Rahm Emmanuel grew up on Chicago's north shore, and David Axelrod lived there when he was working in Chicago (he's originally from NY I believe).

I remember a long-lasting flame/discussion with a (basically decent, though perhaps uncautious with his words) netizen a few years back. His position was that because Geo. W. Bush aspired to "compassionate conservatism," abortions were on the increase, so Republicans were the root of all evil, and true conservatives had to stop them. Or something.

Iran Threatens to Attack US Forces in Middle East if Attacked http://tinyurl.com/yg7c8pz
After several warnings that it would hit back at Israel if attacked from there, IranÂ’s military chief said Thursday he would target U.S. forces stationed in the Middle East if Washington attacked.
“If America presents Iran with a serious threat and undertakes any measure against Iran, none of the American soldiers who are currently in the region would go back to America alive,” Major General Hassan Firouzabadi, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.

I did my taxes today and found out that I'm getting beaucoup $$$ back. Using the EIC and and the "Make Work Pay" credits I'll be refunded about ten times more than my tax liability.
So should I:

And thanks to all you hard working morons who made this moral quandary possible.

Good news for the GOP in Ohio. Per dispatch.com:
In what could be a worrisome sign for the party that controls the White House and Ohio governor's office, substantially more Democrats than Republicans are switching parties this year in early absentee-ballot requests from Ohio's largest counties.
In Cuyahoga County, for example, the number of Democrats switching to the GOP outnumbered Republicans becoming Democrats by nearly 7 to 1 as of Tuesday. Two years ago, nearly five times as many Republicans switched in Ohio's largest county.
Democrats lead the party conversions by almost 9 to 1 in Hamilton County, while it's about 6 to 1 in Franklin County. Statewide totals aren't available, but the three counties contain about 30 percent of all registered voters in Ohio.

I'd buy a tricked out ruger 10/.22 bull barrel for shooting critters, but I don't shoot critters. Never could kill a furry critter, be it squirrel, rabbit, fox, or deer. Just can't do it. If I'm starving, that's another story... but that's another story. Only creature I'll willingly empty a clip on is a rattlesnake.

Stick with .223 (5.56x45), 7.62x39, .308... even 30/06 if you want to go with a Garand. Holds true with pistols too, stick with .45 & 9mm.
There is gobs and GOBS of the above stuff in ammo crates in storage.
Buy a $110+ lower, order a $550+ A3 kit from Model 1 sales and put it together with simple directions available on arfdotcom. Even a moron can do it.
...or go ready-made.
Personally, my grab-n-go AR is a DPMS with a 20"hb, Eotech 512 hws (takes standard AA batteries, not cr123). I have a 4x magnifier for 400+ yd shots (I keep it in a pouch in my gear unless needed - it mounts in a second), and a Troy flip-up iron. Glass or red dot/HWS give you a huge advantage over irons. Of course an Eotech will run about $400, and the fts 4x magnifier was around $450 + $140 for the Troy rear iron.
My optics cost more than the rifle...
