In Another Interview, Fiorina Says She Doesn't Support Arizona's Law
— Ace

In that Politico piece below, she says she does support Arizona's law, but here, she says she doesn't.

Immigration is proving a tricky issue for GOPers everywhere. Ms. Fiorina told us she supports increasing a federal temporary worker program and securing the borders, but opposes Arizona's new immigration law because it seeks to deal with a federal issue on a state level. In interviews with CNBC and Politico, though, she bent over backwards to say she "understands" the frustrations of Arizonans while decrying a "racist tone" adopted by some of its backers.

It seems like she either 1) took two contrary positions, or more likely 2) offered Politico a confusing and highly nuanced position of offering understanding only for the frustrations of Arizonans but not the actual law, which they then misreported as support of the law.

Or, they got it wrong, I guess.

My guess is they got it right and Fiorina is trying to have it both ways.

That won't do. I was willing to give her a break when I thought her positioning was merely rhetorical (and, to my mind, useful). But if she's going to equivocate on the substance -- Next.

2 She's starting to remind me more and more of John McCain.  I'd almost rather keep Boxer in there  - it gives the Democrats an extra vote, but it also gives them an embarrassment.

We definitely don't need another senator who's going to play into media stereotypes for her own personal gain.

In fairness she's a cancer survivor. As much as I prefer DeVore, let's not go there. Besides, the dyke look just might sell out here.

That said, I wonder if a coherent GOP can exploit rifts in the rainbow coalition of the Left. Such rifts are:

anti-development, anti-agriculture Green vs. pro construction and pro-agriculture Brown.

"fabulous" Pink vs. churchy and anti-gay Black and Brown

Black vs. Brown (unspoken but basically an out and out war in the ghettoes and prisons)

The Demunists here have a lot of infighting, and I often wonder why the Cali GOP can't seem to exploit it.

21 >>>Not trying to pick a fight (Really!) but that's why many of us get picky when politicians do the *smart* thing and muddle their positions. There's no good way of knowing we're not the ones being lied to. Yes but if she was supporting the law itself that would not be "muddled" in my mind. Let's not confuse things -- McCain and Graham were odious for calling our *position* racist. If Fiorina was supporting our position -- implicitly calling it not-racist -- what is the problem with noting that there are also racists and racist positions (and racist tone)? I mean -- are we defending racists? If we're not being called racists, do we mind if the politician calls other people racists? I think there is a lot of political sense in such an approach, supporting the policy of secure-borders-first while giving a little rhetorical support to the anti-racist cause. Again, I think that creates a strawman (or not so strawman) position to your outside so you can then appear "moderate." Let me postulate that "Moderate" positions ALWAYS win. By which I mean this: If a position wins, then the country has moved in that direction enough to embrace that position, so there probably IS a position to the outside of that one which is not being executed. Or, the "moderate" position wins because the party supporting it has rhetorically convinced the country it IS moderate. Even if it's conservative. The party wins when conservative becomes synonymous with "centrist." This happened on crime, of course. The once "hardcore retributionist conservative" position is now the sensible center. I don't mind if a conservative position is CAST AS a moderate position by postulating some horrible rightwing policy to the fringe right of it.

So fuck reenforcing that stereotype.

38 Saying there is a racist tone to efforts to enforce border security only serves two purposes. It smears anyone that wants to enforce the law with slander and it makes people that are here legally think half the country, namely Republicans, hates them and is a racist. So by saying this she is not only smearing her fellow Republicans but helping lie to millions of Americans and tell them that millions of other Americans hate them because of the color of their skin. This does not help Mitt Romney, it helps Obama divide the country and aids Dem efforts to get Hispanics to vote 97% for them just like AA's because they believe our country is a racist shithole.

40 I think the election this fall is going to be vastly different from the previous 15 or 20 years. The people are NOT in the mood for squishy "moderate" sounding Republicans.  Hell, they were not in the mood for that last election after 8 years of squishy moderate Bush turning the cheek after every attack.  When McLame decided to cross over and become even more leftest that a moderate the Party stayed at home.

It would be a big mistake to appear soft on amnesty once again for a Republican. Even the Dem voters don't like amnesty which is why Rob Emanuel told the Dems to stay out of the issue in 2007 and let the Republicans eat themselves.

If she did, in fact, say she was opposed to the AZ law and Politico is not making shit up then most likely she is toast in the primary.

49 "Rule of Anyway"

Good rule.

On the illegal immigration issue (like others), keep mentioning something and that something becomes real even when it isn't. The word association becomes so powerful that it defines the issue even when it doesn't. As it evolves, to discuss immigration control, at all, means you're perpetuating racism if not actually racist. It's a word game where to dissociate the words becomes impossible. And that's what the pro-illegal immigration/amnesty crowd is counting on.

See what I did there? Pro-illegal immigration crowd. Two can play this game. Unfortunately, Fiorina wants to play by rules imposed upon her. IOW she's not a leader.

He didn't say there aren't. He's saying that 'concern' over racism is playing into the hands of Lefties who use racial grievance as a brickbat.

Playing the Lefty's game is a losing proposition; you can never beat Lefties at identity politics. You will always be 'guilty' of some offense and by trying to play the good informant, you fuck the whole party over.

The only play is to reject broad-brush accusations of racism without fear or compromise.

All political parties have racists among their members. Why is it only the GOP that must defend itself from these charges?

That is the same thing as the "Bush Lied" meme. It was repeated at every press release the Dems made and by the PR goons in the MSM every day. The Republicans never bothered to counter it at all.  It became the defacto truth.

If the Republicans continue the policy of not combating the lies from the Dems and the press they will never win.

The thing about defending "racists" is we are all "racist" by virtue of opposing Obama and, on this issue, being concerned with national self-interest (at the expense of Mexico's ability to export its unemployment), at least according to the media.  Playing along puts her on *their* side, or at least the non-election year McCain side.  Which as long as there's still a primary to be had, hits my *next* button pretty hard.

(And what about the racist tone of some of the opponents? What about the frankly anti-American-sovereignty tone of it?)

58 ...The comment about her hair, by the way, was spectacularly assholic. Anyone who has ever lost a friend to breast cancer (we've lost two) recognizes the look, and wishes her all the best.

Oh, for chrissakes, no it's not 'assholic'. He just said the look didn't suit her. He wasn't  fucking insulting cancer survivors. Lighten the fuck up. I've known breast cancer victims who wore really chic wigs--or does that throw them out of the victim club?
She's running for a very public office, and looks DO matter.

72 It's becoming more clear why the original founders of HP wanted her out...She's for Carly at whatever costs...I remember her picking up 100 large compensation about 2000...I mean 100 million large.  As far as I'm concerned, anyone with that kind of ego is a liability not an asset...

73 See, this is why CA is fucked. The CA GOP can't put up any viable candidates, doesn't support actual viable candidates and then fucks the few conservatives in the state up the arse to keep their cushy gerrymandered seats.

I hate CA. The CA GOP can FOADIAF.

Tom McClintock should have been governor. Chuck Devore should be Senator.

We're probably going to keep Boxer and get Jerry Brown as governor to put the final nail in CA's coffin. At this point, I don't think I care anymore.

But then be sure to say it's a small number of jerks. Yes it's a problem, but you aren't going to let an entire movement of concerned citizens be painted with a broad brush.

Yep.

The media is not going around saying that there are a few racists. They are painting the whole right as racists.

So if she seems to be argreeing at all...what message do you think most people are going to hear? The nuanced one? I'm not that optomistic.

Like I said before, if I do have purity test for Republicans, it's not very stringent.

It's simple actually: You don't have to agree with me 100% of the time. All I ask is you don't help the other side win.

Fiorina fails.

I agree.  And Ace, please don't fall into that leftist camouflaged PC pit.  The AZ law isn't racist.  It doesn't even come close.

77 The media is not going around saying that there are a few racists. They are painting the whole right as racists.

Just once I'd like to see an R politician interviewed who, when asked about racism in the R party say, "Well, actually, let's talk about the racists in the Democrat party starting with the New Black Panthers, La Raza, "Sheets" Byrd, etc. etc." And then call the interviewer racist when the interviewee is interrupted.

Posted by: wherestherum at May 03, 2010 03:30 PM (gofDd)

78 The AZ law isn't racist.  It doesn't even come close.

This is why the AZ law is racist because the Left thinks common sense is racist.

The media is not going around saying that there are a few racists. They are painting the whole right as racists.

And she's helping them with this "racist tone" nonsense.

Hey, nothing like being totally vague so that the racist label can be applied to anyone on the pro-enforcement side.

I mean, it's a concern, right? She said it was.

What the hell does racist tone mean anyway? Who knows? She doesn't say. She doesn't give examples. So I guess it means whatever the media wants it to mean.

How nice for them.

Great work, you dumbass.

80 Perception is reality,

No, it's not. Perception is perception -- filtered by bias and ignorance, and limited by the information presented to you. So long as putative Republicans go along with the "gee, we sure are a bunch of racists, ain't we?" line of BS, that line of BS will never be confronted.

and besides, you're getting pretty close to saying there are no racists in the GOP, which is nonsense on stilts.

That a racist may support a policy -- even if it's because of his racism -- that does not make the policy racist. The "taint of racism" is not communicable -- and if it were, wouldn't that taint must strongly touch the people who openly support race-based preferences and racially exclusive organizations?

Racist tone.

How flexible. It could mean anything.

So, what's so racist about wanting to enforce our immigration laws?

Oh, you know. Just the tone of the debate.

The what?

The tone. The racist tone.

Oh.

104 Well, far be it from me to dispute anyone so incredibly sophisticated as to have read Fritz Lieber, but, Mr. "best thief in Lankhmar", the reason her hair looks that way is because that's how it grows back after chemo.  In other words, it's not a style choice, it's the reality of her life.  Which has been irrevocably changed by a cancer that may or may not kill her.  So glibly telling her it's "not a good" look and makes her look like a "dyke", are the insensitive comments of an asshole.  And if you don't get that, feel free to slap the same label on your own forehead and call it a day.

FFS, once again---We know she had chemo. So? The man was stating his opinion that the short dyke cut is not a good look on her. There are slammin' looking wigs out there. Since when is it impermissible to criticize a candidate based on their looks?

Her battle with cancer is completely irrelevant--unless of course, the woman isn't clear of cancer, in which case, she shouldn't be wasting her time, our ours, running for office, when we've got a perfectly good conservative candidate in DeVore. It's not like we need her to run California into the ground, like she did HP.

Not every fucking haircut in the world is badge of honor.
