Increasing jobs and consumer spending to spark round of inflation
— Purple Avenger

Oh, my bad, did I say inflation? I meant to say that inflation has suddenly disappeared and prices are falling.

Inflation has essentially disappeared...

...Consumer prices fell in April for the first time in more than a year...

...Declining gas prices pulled overall prices down 0.1 percent last month. Gas prices are predicted to sink lower still this summer...

...Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was flat in April. Over the past 12 months, it has risen just 0.9 percent -- the smallest increase in 44 years...

...The weakness of the economy has kept inflation so low that some economists are beginning to worry about the possibility of deflation -- a destabilizing period of falling prices and wages...

Apparently all that supposed recent consumer buying frenzy hasn't done much to increase demand/prices. I wonder why that might be?

Similarly, all those freshly employed folks don't seem geared up to do much driving during what is supposed to be the peak driving season. When is the last time you saw gas prices declining significantly during summer in an economy that is claimed to be in recovery? My guess would be ummmm...never.

A nice round of deflation and further declining interest rates must have those people who just bought new cribs under the ObamaBucks giveaway program feeling kinda green at the gills...many could be underwater before the year is out.

I think we're at an inflection point deciding if we'll go with a depression or major-inflation.  Obviously the government would in the near term prefer major inflation since a full blown depression would compel real and drastic cutbacks.

30 BTW, people should keep awares that the idiots in the federal government are touting price deflation, while we have been inflating the monetary supply.  Their answer is that, as prices deflate, we must combat that by destroying the value of the currency through monetary inflation.  This is the most insane conception of price stabilization that I have ever heard of in my life.  It is perverted, in the extreme.

The dollar has been shooting up like a rocket because of the problems in Europe, both the dollar and a double dip recession in Europe is driving the price of oil down. Our bonds still have a low interest rate because they are the only ones in the world that you might have a chance of getting redeemed so eveyone is buying them and dumping junk bonds in Europe.

Our Economy has only grown an average of 3.5% for 3 quarters which puts us below what it was when Obama took office.

136 all of this has reminded me of the bank crisis and recession of the early 90's, with the attendant fears of an endemic recession. after the banks got their house in order there was a boom, aided by the productivity advances of tech. we won't see that kind of growth in prosperity, but you anticipate economic failure at your own risk. to me that's a bit of partisan political projection, something the libs are (in)famous for. there's a tremendous amount of liquidity and disposable income out there, and people earning salaries at boom levels of just a few years ago. barring a total collapse of the chinese economy, the engine of prosperity that is the american and, over the past 20 years, largely deregulated european & asians economies will proceed apace. we owe it to reagan (& thatcher), of course, and the structural values unleashed are not going to subside any time soon.

146 It makes sense to me that if folks today have never seen a live dinosaur, some folks are bound to figure dinosaurs never lived. Welcome to the wondrous world of deflation. It's nothing like runaway inflation; it's even different from stagnation. It's got its very own myopic physics. With inflation, wages go up, prices go up, costs go up -- everything goes up up up, just not at the same rate. With stagnation, maybe some wages go up due to scare demand; others go down; but not at the same rate. Same with costs; and the same with prices. With deflation, a lot more wages go generally decidedly down than those that go up; maybe only the costs of some things go up, while others go down, again, at individually peculiar rates, but net nothing when you use math and such to factor out all the unimportant non-math differences between a 30 year old Wall Street bond trader and a 55 year old auto parts factory worker; but prices of things that both the trader and the factory worker need to live, aren't going to go down -- only prices of things that someone can do without are going to go down, from too little money chasing them.

It's going to be a long strange ride, one we're maybe going to look back at in wonder and ask ourselves: now why in hell did I ever think that'd work? He's against taxes, but thinks the way to solve pockets of poverty in Kentucky is to give those pockets a tax holiday. He's against Kentuckians sending any money to Washington, though Kentucky gets back way more than it sends; he thinks this'll help bring "freedom" and "prosperity". He's 100% behind some government programs like the Civil Rights Act of 1965 but 100% against it being used to do anything; folks should just get the hint and be nicer. He's against wars too -- just...just stop it everyone. Oh, and note he's actually for a progressive tax system -- just not, you know, an actual tax system. 175 I would just point out that the federal government, and the Fed, have an added interest (no pun intended) on selling the deflationary scenario.  A modest rise in interest rates would kill us.  But, the faith that they are selling in their schemes costs in terms of interest.  They have been fighting it by buying our own bonds, but you can only do that for so long.

Just a thought.

Posted by: progressoverpeace at May 19, 2010 06:35 PM (Qp4DT)

176

BTW, people should keep awares that the idiots in the federal government are touting price deflation, while we have been inflating the monetary supply.  Their answer is that, as prices deflate, we must combat that by destroying the value of the currency through monetary inflation.  This is the most insane conception of price stabilization that I have ever heard of in my life.  It is perverted, in the extreme.

Thank you progressoverpeace for the most lucid explanation of why the current talk of deflation is completely idiotic. Prices will decline if 1) less and less dollars chase more and more economic activity or 2) prices will decline if demand is reduced from less and less economic activity or 3) prices will decline if supply is greatly increased.

Its hard to believe that the monetary supply (#1) is contracting given the easy money policy of the Fed.

The Chinese are so fucked.  They are going to want US debt over the next 10 years like Chris Reeve wanted baby fetuses.

The Fed just opened a mother fucking discount window to Europe.  That tells you how fucked Europe is.  European banks have eased lending to each other.  The Greek Central bank was shorting it's own nation's assets.  The Germans step in to ban naked short selling in the CDS markets.  That's going to really piss off European central banks that are shorting against themselves to protect their gentry.  The IMF and the Fed are the new lender of last resort.

Europe is so toast.  The United States can pimp out China for a while.  They still thurst for oil which we're now reducing in price so they can get a shit ton more with more valuable excess US dollars due to the trade surplus.  You're welcome Beijing.  You cocksuckers.
