— Ace Circumstantial, but compelling:
Although the American officials who spoke about the intelligence assessment would not reveal much about what led them to conclude that Mr. Kim was directly involved, one factor appeared to be intelligence that he appeared on April 25, the anniversary of the founding of the Korean PeopleÂ’s Army, with a military unit that intelligence agencies believe to have been responsible for the attack.Mr. Kim used the event to praise the group, Unit 586, the officials said, and around that time a fourth star appears to have been given to Gen. Kim Myong-guk, who officials believe may have played a crucial role in executing the attack. General Kim is believed to have been demoted to a three-star general last year, perhaps in response to the humiliation that took place after a North Korean ship ventured into South Korean waters. The North Korean ship was all but destroyed, and some analysts believe the attack on the Cheonan, which was in South Korean waters, was planned as retribution.
“Nobody is going to take overt credit for the sinking,” said Jonathan Pollack, a professor at the Naval War College and an expert on North Korea’s military. “But Kim’s visit to this unit has all the hallmarks of congratulating them for a job well done.”
The senior American officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the intelligence assessment is classified, said they ruled out the idea that General Kim or another military officer decided on his own to attack, but they did not explain how they reached that conclusion.
When I served in and/or returned from Vietnam, we used to call that an act of war.*

runningrn, I think everyone is just so totally surprised at this news that they don't know what to say. I mean, really, who would've thought, all those many weeks ago when we heard about the South Korean ship, that its sinking had anything in the world to do with North Korea?

Let's not foolishly profile the North Koreans who captured the imagination of their Southern cousins with this incident. We should make this a teaching moment for what happens when artificial lines drawn on a map keep a people from their destiny. If there were no borders there could be no war. Word to your Mama san.

The Norks have several thousand artillery tubes pre-sighted on Seoul. They're dug into reverse slopes so that finding them and killing them will take time. Even if every A-10 in the USAF is tasked with taking out these positions, Seoul will still be hit by at least 100,000 artillery shells of 152mm or larger.
That's the calculus that the Blue House must take into account every time the Norks act up. The unknown question is what provocation will it take for South Korea to strike back knowing what will happen to Seoul.

Conservatives fail to appreciate the good work accomplished by Madeleine Albright in her dealings with Kim Jong il. She danced with the dictator while sipping champagne, declared him the Fred Astaire of the Korean peninsula, and marveled how well they communicated on matters of importance.

The operational relationship between the Norks and the Iranians has grown exponentially over the past few years, but I don't think the Norks would out-and-out sell a nuke to Iran. What I think is occurring is the Iranians are building nukes with Nork tech and the Norks are testing the design for them.
And the Norks have a good relationship with Syria, remember the Israeli strike on the nascent Syrian reactor in 2007?

War with North Korea would need to be a war of extermination. Nearly every man, woman, and child in that nation has been brainwashed into that cult. There must be a sorority of booby traps wired throughout the nation, not to mention Gladio forces in every hamlet. The simple solution would be to employ biological or chemical weapons--this could easily be attributed to carelessness on behalf of the North Koreans, who most likely maintain stockpiles.

They're believed to have around 13,000 artillery pieces at the border. Assuming each fired a mere 3 rounds per minute, that's 39,000 artillery shells hitting Seoul a minute. Over 2.3 million shells an hour, or 650 a second.
They also have a shitton of anti-aircraft missiles, which aircraft like A-10's and Apaches would be particularly vulnerable to.
Sure, all that could be dealt with eventually, but not before most of Seoul was a smoldering ruin.

Like most dictatorial regimes, the NORK Command & Control is probably antiquated and inadequate for mass communication within a small time frame. Simplistically so, they don't know what they don't know.
I am not suggesting it would be a cake walk, but in a country with death for failure to perform and also for performing without a direct order, the chaos within the NORK military if they were attacked could be strategically advantageous to the invading force.
To wit: Iraq’s Republican Guard – Buffoonish, amateurish, and vulnerable.

The Blue House isn't all that keen on Seoul burning, so we're stuck with negotiations.
This is the bit that no-one ever speaks of in NK/SK relations, because to do so would admit that NK has a power to destroy Seoul that cannot be eliminated prior to the first shell being fired. Even in the flight time of your tactical nukes Seoul is still taking hundreds of round per second.

Absent tactical nuclear warheads, the only alternative would be a massive, pre-emptive strike on the Nork gun emplacements. It would have to be a massive air operation, with redundant strikes of the bunkers. And the South would have to invade as a follow-up, but I'm not sure they could stage such a huge operation without the North knowing about it.
I guess you could go all Hollywood and theorize about teams of special-ops guys sabotaging the guns, but I don't think that would have a prayer of succeeding in reality.

To my knowledge, all nukes were removed from the peninsula in 1992 per GHW Bush. Not exactly sure when, I left in July 91 and we still had them at the air base I was at. As far as having them at all, someone that served in the army would have to answer that.
Posted by: Bill R. at May 23, 2010 11:49 AM (EhlQq)
That center of knowledge, wiki, says no.
In 1991 the US unilaterally withdrew its nuclear artillery shells from service, and Russia responded in kind in 1992. The US removed around 1,300 nuclear shells from Europe and reportedly dismantled its last shells by 2003. Focus has since moved to development of nuclear bunker buster munitions.

Seoul's population is approximately 10 million people. If the Norks launched a first-strike attack and used their WMDs, there wouldn't enough time to evacuate everybody.

Does anyone know if the South Koreans have an evacuation plan for Seoul? If war is inevitable, and it's pretty clearly underway if the norks have no problem sinking South Korean ships, it seems you'd want to at least get people out of the way. And/or conscript/reenlist them.
If you've ever been there during the Chu Sok holiday weekend, you'd know what a clusterfuck that would be. A normal 5-6 hour trip from Seoul to Pusan takes 15-16 hours. Add that to the fact that many of the overpasses are built to collapse easily for tank barriers and many people will die.

Awwww, cute little diesel-electric subs you got there. Be a shame if something was to happen to some of them, you know? How fast can they go under water, anyway - 12 knots? For what, 24 hours?
Tough for them to run away from something that goes 50 knots underwater, Kimmy. Forever.

You can't evacuate 10 million people. It would take weeks.
And everyone who's talking about tactical nukes on those artillery positions, they're not all bunched up in one spot. You'd have to use hundreds of nukes, 25 miles away from a city of 10 million people.
When the war ended almost 60 years ago, why the hell didn't they move the capital all the way to Pusan in the south and encourage growth there. Not right on the border.

Besides, the assumption that Seoul is immediately going to be hammered with artillery is erroneous. You've got our Cavalry at Camp Garry Owen, Infantry and Armor at Camps Casey and Hovey, 2nd ID HQ at Camp Red Cloud near Uijongbu - all of these are between the DMZ and Seoul, and that's just some of our facilities.
All of 'em are positioned to block the Chorwon Valley, which is the only route an invasion force can take, since the eastern half of the country is all mountains. All of these, plus the ROK military installations I haven't addressed are going to be the priority targets.
And all those tubes don't have to be taken out with indirect fire, they just have to be suppressed. We can do that with conventionally artillery, high-altitude saturation bombing, or even some low-yield nukes, if it came to that. That gives our grunts the opportunity to get reinforced from the south, blow a breach through the Norks' side of the DMZ, get to those artillery crews and ask them if they could please knock it off.

They probably do... but it's a city of 10 million people.
No one is going to war over one ship. The Norks are probably just looking for more blackmail, and have to stir shit up once in a while to portray themselves as a threat.
Regime survival is their main motivation. A war against the South would seriously endanger that. Considering the stakes involved, there's good reason that our policy has been one of containment since the Korean War.
Also, the Chinese wouldn't look kindly on an attack by the North that could lead to many thousands of North Korean refugees trying to flee to China.

Further complicating any evacuation of Seoul is the fact that their public sector is riddled with North Korean sleeper agents. In the year I was there, they caught two - one was a university professor and the other was in charge of Seoul's subway system!
These people are in place to cause as much sabotage, terror and general fuckery as they can commit once the balloon goes up. And they look just like the South Koreans.

125 Jeff - What's the range on the North's guns? I thought all they had to do was pull the trigger. Seoul is only 25 miles away.
Long enough. When I got to Camp Hovey, my welcome briefing started with these words: "Welcome to the Republic of Korea. You are living on a registered artillery target. The average flight time for a shell fired from just north of the DMZ is thirty seconds from when they pull the lanyard, which means there'll already be another in the air by the time the first one arrives. We have alert sirens, but you'll probably never hear them. You'll know we're at war when the building you're sleeping in explodes."

Launch of secret US space ship masks even more secret launch of new weapon
The X37B can stay in orbit for up to 270 days, whereas the Shuttle can last only 16 days. This will provide the US with the ability to carry out experiments for long periods, including the testing of new laser weapon systems. This would bring accusations that the launch of X37B, and a second vehicle planned for later this year, could lead to the militarisation of space.

That's true, but for probably a different reason than you think. They're saving face, plain and simple. The South hit them and now they're hitting back.
Plus, this low-intensity shit goes on all the time over there, but it doesn't make the international press. In the summer of 1997, I was doing a QRF rotation with my platoon at Warrior Base up near the DMZ. There's rules for patrolling in the DMZ that both sides have agreed to, but which the Norks ignore. One is no automatic weapons in the DMZ. Another is you have to tell the other side when you are sending a patrol in there.
Well, the Norks sent a seven-man patrol in unannounced and when the ROK army outpost called out a warning for them to turn back, one of those dipshits raised his rifle and pointed it at the ROKs. They lit him and his buddies up like a fucking Christmas tree. A couple of hours later, the Norks sent some mortar rounds over the border (not close enough to us to feel, but close enough to hear), and shit got pretty tense for a while - all flights into and out of the country were cancelled.
But then it cooled off like it always does. Kim's insane, but he's not stupid. He can't win and he knows it, but he can't afford to appear weak, either.
After my tour was over, I flew home, changing planes in Vietnam. When I returned from Vietnam, they spit on me. Things got physical, even.

Yeah, I've heard of various "skirmishes" and such happen quite a bit, be it from ground troops, naval vessels, or artillery. The sinking of a ship is serious, but hardly the first engagement since the cease-fire.
I'm sure that "saving face" does have a lot to do with it, but that doesn't really contradict the desire to build themselves up as an imminent threat that must be placated through "aid" from South Korea and the West.
A full-fledged invasion from the North wouldn't be pretty; I'm not sure they'd be stopped before occupying Seoul if they launced a surprise attack. However, I doubt they'll try anytime soon- they know that the US wouldn't allow the Kim regime to remain in power were they to try.

I think the response to the Nork attack will be increased banking sanctions, and the unexplainable disappearance of the remaining Nork subs shortly after leaving port.
Banking sanctions can be negotiated away, and they give Kim and his Generals and very close friends a severe case of chapped ass. But they appear to be really wussy responses to a severe situation, so they can easily mask the disappearance of the Nork subs.
The odds of the Norks publicly accusing anyone of sinking their subs is low; too much loss of face and we could simply point to their lack of training / maintenance as the real cause.

I don't think the Chinese would have any problem stopping Norks from crossing the border.
This problem with Lil' Kim just gets worse and worse with every passing minute. Seoul isn't getting any smaller and the Norks aren't getting any weaker, in missile/nuke terms. Once we let them go nuclear, it seems to have been all over. We might as well just give Lil' Kim the South. ANd China might as well take Taiwan, already, to stop any guessing people have to do about that. The US would never react in either of those situations, and the world is starting to figure that out.

The problem I see with China is that they don't want a unified Korean Peninsula, except under a Chinese vassal state. I doubt that South Korea will go along with this. The North leaders have to, since they can't make their state work and the alternative is a grizzly end for them and their families. Some sort of coup in N Korea might make unification possible, but I expect 20 or so PLA divisions will see things differently. We're stuck with a divided Korea for the foreseeable future.
Will China go along with sanctions? It's tough to tell. The Big 0 hasn't got enough diplomacy-fu to coax China to go along if China doesn;t want to, and sanctions would likely mean more refugees. Kim might even start, if he isn't already, sending refugees into China to get China to see things his way.

That's NOT a mistatement.
I personally consider THIS type of individual to be the actual 'CHICKEN HAWKS', due to the concurrence of the timing of their unwillingness to endure the threat/acuality of danger or loss of life/limb but who then wish to wrap themselves in the mantle of 'HERO' for their own selfish purposes well after the danger has passed, rather than those who gain deferrments for the period of danger but who then become proponents for sending others into a more current danger. At least those types are honest.

See that's the problem, we give the chicoms their own toys back. It's like regifting. The NORKS should have got the bears and the tax payers of America the overcharged button.

The impression I'm getting from assorted google searches is that the people of South Korea just want to keep their heads down and hope it all goes away. They don't want their politicians making any noise about this, and they don't want to talk about North Korea, even to tell their kids what a shithole their countrymen are living in.
It seems like they would rather live under a Korean dictatorship than under freedom assisted by Westerners.
I may also be being influenced by having heard a great deal of Asian prejudice lately. (Asians against other folks, I mean.)

Hey remember in 2005 when that fat little corrupt douchebag Mary Landrieu said she would 'punch President Bush in the nose' if he dared to say anything bad about how Louisianans were fucking up things after Katrina?
And she said in that cute little Shirley Temple precocious voice. Funny how she isn't critical of Obama and his gross neglect of the BP oil spill cleanup, isn't it?

All the bridges across the Imjin are wired with explosives. You can see the loops of det cord as you drive across the Freedom Bridge towards Warrior Base. It's a little creepy knowing that if it all goes down, they're blowing the bridges and you're stuck between North Korea and the river. At least until your ammo runs out.

Desmond is the fail safe
But there too much biblical stuff going on for the answer to be that simple.
I will be sorely disappointed if that's the best the writers can do.

I'm not watching it. I loved the first season - good fun - and even the second season remained good, but as it became apparent that they weren't going to explain the 'reset' button (which is where Shrillary's smarts Power button idea came from, BTW) I lost interest. I can't stand stories where the writers just make shit up as they go along, without feeling the need to really tie anything together.

the guy who plays 'the man in black' aka the smoke monster is a likable screen presence."
My wife calls him Adam, since he was one of the Adam and Eve corpses. I was actively rooting for him, and don't understand why he's a villain at all. Lost was a total creative disappointment. The entire mystique and wonder of the show was that assumption that there was a creative and coherent explanation that actually worked for all these strange things. Brainwashing videos, Walt drawing future reality and bird ESP, polar bears, frozen wheels, time travel, true love magic, fertility magic, cancer curing, dharma and Eloise having special knowledge, super physics, Egyptian god statue, four toes, Island moving, whsipers...
The list of issues that seems unrelated but were mysterious put together is long. I can see why they gave up even attempting to have a coherent explanation. What explanation we did get was barely an explanation at all. How did Jacob make Richard immortal? He patted him on the back. What are the whispers? Spirits. Still, even the 'character driven' ending doesn't make sense. The ending was extremely uncreative psuedo religious crap. Sugary and fake and just uncreative. But predictable.
Apparenly 20 minutes of 'explanation' will be added to the finale if I buy the special DVD. OK, fuck you too.

You may have noticed that nations like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan don't have their own nuclear weapons. This isn't because they lack the ability to build them. These countries have agreed to not build them in exchange for American protection.
Not a bad idea, if you think about it.
But since The One has become President, there are real doubts about America's willingness to protect its allies anymore.
If I were the leader of South Korea, I'd withdraw from the Non Proliferation Treaty and take care of business myself.
