— LauraW Once Again, AOSHQ Commenters Prove Themselves More Useful Than The MSM
Thanks to, um, 'conscious and not laying in a pool of urine any longer' in the Tinkle Poll comments thread:
An illegal immigrant from Iran named Hamid Malekpour was discovered last month smuggling a huge load of sniper rifles and high-powered weaponry across the Canadian border into Washington State. He has since been arrested and charged with entering the country illegally with firearms and ammunition, as well as filing a false report with a federal agency.
Fortunately, our first layer of national defense kicked in. That layer being the terrorists' own bountiful stupidity and bungling. That one has saved countless American lives. And God knows we'll always be able to depend on it. /sarc
When questioned by agents about the cache in his car, which included all the .50-caliber ammunition, he claimed to be a hunter. As evidence, he produced a computer image of a recently expired North Dakota hunting license. In his wallet, agents found a Canadian hunting license, issued the previous day in the name of Hamid Malekpour. They also found a valid British Columbia driverÂ’s license in the name of King, issued in 2008, and a Canadian postal receipt from the previous day in the name of Malekpour.
Please do check out the links to see what kind of serious weaponry they found.
Apparently the only place this was reported was in the East Overshoe Weekly Reminder, between a nifty 20% coupon for wallpaper at Mort's Hardware and an ad for some guy with a pickup truck who does junk removal.
The MFM doesn't find stories like this interesting unless the guy is named Bob and he's been to a Tea Party. But the average American finds this sort of thing positively scintillating. You could say our interest has been permanently piqued by an event that happened almost nine years ago.
They have become such parrots and narrative pushers that they even refuse to recognize a story that will sell papers.

We're the gatekeepers, we're the educated professionals, we know what the reading public needs to be informed on.
Now if you'll excuse us, we have retrospectives to do on the anniversary of Bobby Kennedy's assassination and why attitudes like those of the teabaggers killed him.

I'm curious where he got the weapons from since I'm pretty sure you just can't walk into a Canadian sporting goods store and purchase them.

Much of the weaponry was packed into boxes bearing shipping labels addressed to McMinnville Hunting & Police Supplies Inc., the affidavit states. The obscure business, located in a shuttered, unsigned office at 1900 N.E. Highway 99W, is owned by Amir Zarandi.

Me too. And how many other weapons did Hamid Malekpour smuggle in before he was caught?
And who's on the receiving end?

a .50-caliber sniper rifle, two .308-caliber sniper rifles, three .300-caliber sniper rifles, eight law enforcement style .223-caliber rifles, three Glock semi-automatic handguns, 100 .223-caliber magazines, 3,800 rounds of .223-caliber ammunition, various high-powered scopes and other equipment.
Some RoP'ers could stage a pretty good imitation of the Mumbai Attacks with that kind of arsenal.

I think this may not be a terrorist.
1. Smuggling weapons IN from Canada? We don't have all the hardware he needs here? Why add that layer of trouble if you don't need too?
2. That flaky gun store that is "by appointment only" looks more like a front for buying guns. Could be terrorist related, sure. He could just be scamming the state or gun buyers too, or using that business license to do things a private individual could not readily do.
Still, the non-reporting and embargo of this story by the MFM is a much bigger concern.

Betcha he makes bail and bails. He's an illegal.
We had an illegal get busted for meth at a rural house here in NE Commiefornia. He got deported (that way the stupid County doesn't have to pay to indict/ try/incarcerate his criminal ass). He was back in a week.
One of my buddies wants to institute a 'Hands Across the Border" program. Chop off their hands and throw them and their hands across the border.

For those who are unaware, there are a number of cloistered Islamic "religious communities" and madrassas around the US and Canada, funded from overseas, that are basically low-key training camps and "safe houses," a few have been busted and others investigated - I don't know how many there are total by any means, but there are a lot.
I've seen a few cases where weapons caches and explosives have been pulled out of otherwise empty apartments, and the MFM reports it as just a local looney, but the neighbors report all-hours middle-eastern TV or radio blaring... I think things like former hunting lodges and daycamps are preferred. I'd have to go look up the exact place but one was shut down a few years ago back East and several people deported.
The West's biggest problem is unwillingness to confront our most serious problems.

Yeah, could be. But why is he bring hardware INTO the U.S. from Canada that is much harder to even get there and then transport it here. It just isn't making much sense. Why not just drive over the border and buy everything here?
He's Iranian, so I say it's more likely he's running some kind of an illegal scam.
Either way, waterboard the fucker.

We don't even know what brand it is. Grey screen is usually "screen has power but no signal." Play with the brightness setting to see if it gets brighter and dimmer.
Try hooking up an external monitor. Does it make any noises?
If it's a MacBook G4, burn it so it never plagues another person again. The method they use to attach the video system (and CPU) to the mobo fails all the time and is a huge pain to fix.
Think about your budget, what's on it, and what a new backup machine costs (netbook $200 or less?). I fix things because it's what I do, but more and more my advice to people is "replace it, don't waste two weeks trying to fix something worth $200."

Posted by: SantaRosaStan at June 06, 2010 11:54 AM (JrRME)
Anyway, Toshibas used to always be very reliable but their warranties have gotten awfully short.
Try an external monitor if you have a cable, it's probably the connector between the screen and the motherboard but it could be the on-board video.

Lets see some math here on this hunter's weapons and ammo.
3.800 rounds of 5.56mm at $0.45 is $1.710US.
8 AR-15 type weapons. Lets call it $800 ea. for bulk purchase discount. $6.400US.
100 AR-15 magazines. Does not say capacity, so lets call them 20-rd type. $13 ea. $1.300US.
.50 calibre sniper rifle. If it was a Barret that is another $10.000US or so.
So far that is $19.400US and not even got to the other rifles or the Glocks.
Add this all up and only a super rich person could afford these items. But this guy does not sound like a collector. So this stinks of a stupid mule running guns into a country that has no record of these weapons.

Criminals might be stupid - but they usually try and make money when they smuggle. What real restrictions are on buying those long arms in the US?
The problem with crossing from Mexico is that the border area is rife with real criminals; guys who owill drop a dime for a reward in a heartbeat and have an ongoing business case that involves slack border security.
The Canadian border involves avoiding love-sick moose -- might be a problem for a Muslim on Thursday night. Getting into Canada as a third world scum bag is easier then getting in to Mexico, too - esp. those coming from Britain or other Commonweath areas.

Pelayo I was looking at Midway USA prices for a 20rd magazine. Yes follow the money to the hateful piece of trash who paid for this Mr. "I have two names?" Mule. Will probably find either Iran or Saudi Arabia behind the tawdry curtain.
Jean, the Mexican-US border might be 'wide open' but the media exposure is insane. Plus the Mexican government does not like illegal immigrants and their prisons make Gitmo seem the paradise it is. As you also pointed out, its in the interest of the coyotes and drug runners not to have them around but its the risk of governemnt capture in Mexico that might be deterring them more.
The Canadian-US border has less public exposure since no one thinks of Canadians being a threat. While forgetting Canada is an excellent haven/corridor for jihadi wanna-bes as you point out.
It still stinks and needs to be thoroughly investigated.
