— DrewM Democracy is a process not and event. As great as holding elections is, how the losers accept the outcome is just as important. Iraq is about to find out how the process is going to work.
Ayad Allawi's predominantly Sunni alliance has won Iraq's national election, narrowly edging out Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki's list to become the largest bloc in the country's next parliament. The upset threatens to end the lock on power that Iraq's majority Shiites have enjoyed since the 2003 after decades of oppression under Saddam Hussein and could severely test the country's fragile institutions. Before the announcement, Shiite politicians warned of violence should their parties lose the election.
The preliminary results announced Friday night show Mr. Allawi's Iraqiya bloc winning 91 seats in the 325-member parliament to 89 seats for Mr. Maliki's State of Law.
In a hastily convened press conference, the prime minister announced he would press for a recount, citing suspicions of fraud.
Maliki has three days to file a protest, which seems likely.
Should the elections stand, Allawi, who served as interim Prime Minister under the Coalition Provincial Authority back in 04-04 before Maliki's election, will have first crack at forming a governing coalition.
People shouldn't jump to conclusions that because there's going to be a challenge or a period of instability and negotiation that this is all a failure, though you know the regular suspects will.
It also doesn't mean that all will be well.
I think one thing we've all learned about Iraq is not to jump to conclusions. It's a fluid place that works on its own time line and in its own ways. They don't have centuries of traditions with this sort of stuff to fall back on, so there will be fits and starts. This will be one of those 'seems' that the forces of instability (on both sides and from outside) will try to exploit. They will likely have some spectacular success in terms of attacks but the big thing will be the general trends.
I'd feel better if we have the old Bush, Crocker, Petraeus team there to support the Iraqis but life moves on and so too will the Iraqis.

MSNBC's Maddow: I'm not running for US Senate Published: 3/26/10, 1:45 PM EDT
BOSTON (AP) - MSNBC host Rachel Maddow has taken out a full-page newspaper ad to declare she's not running for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.
The liberal talk show host placed the ad in Friday's edition of The Boston Globe after newly elected Republican Sen. Scott Brown sent out a fundraising appeal alluding to a potential challenge from Maddow.
Maddow says Brown was "using the made-up threat of me running against him to try to scare donors into giving him more money." She has a home in western Massachusetts.
A Brown spokesman notes some liberals first raised the idea of Maddow running against the senator. And then the Massachusetts Democratic Party chairman sent out a Twitter message that appeared to inquire about the possibility of her running

Definitely would be better if we had an administration that believed the Iraqis could function as a country rather than one that wanted to cut and run and thought the solution would be splitting the country into three. Look for zero support for a democracy in Iraq from our current "leadership"

This is actually pretty good news. Drew M is right to state that the situation is dynamic but this branch was definitely a cross sectarian i.e. not pushing the sectarian us vs them emotional horseshit (for example see Democratic party). It should temper the hardliners from all sides and show them that the iraqi people aren't buying it. They simply want a government that treats everyone equally and stays out of religion, the economy, ethnic divisions and education. For us American citizens that concept will seem very strange and foreign.

Good luck to the Iraqis. If anyone deserves a peaceful, uneventful transfer of power, it's them.

Meanwhile, in America:
Court strikes down campaign contribution limits
A U.S. appeals court struck down on Friday limits on individual contributions to independent political advocacy groups that want to spend money directly to support or oppose candidates for president and Congress.
The unanimous ruling by nine federal appellate judges held the limits violated constitutional free-speech rights under the First Amendment. The decision cited the Supreme Court's ruling in January in another campaign finance case.
The two rulings together are expected to unleash a flood of money ahead of the congressional elections in November and in other political campaigns such as the 2012 presidential contest.
[ . . . ]
The ruling was a defeat for the Federal Election Commission, a federal agency in charge of oversight involving the campaign finance laws. It adopted the regulations at issue in 2005.

Congress passed the bill without knowing what was in it. Barack Obama signed it without reading it. Readers will have to scroll far down to discover that the elimination of a key tax break that kept retirees on company prescription-medication plans will mean dumping millions of seniors onto Medicare — and that the AP ignored it until now:

NEW YORK (AP) -- AT&T Inc. will take a $1 billion non-cash accounting charge in the first quarter because of the health care overhaul and may cut benefits it offers to current and retired workers.
The charge is the largest disclosed so far. Earlier this week, AK Steel Corp., Caterpillar Inc., Deere & Co. and Valero Energy announced similar accounting charges, saying the health care law that President Barack Obama signed Tuesday will raise their expenses. On Friday, 3M Co. said it will also take a charge of $85 million to $90 million.

Director: Stations show porn, say it's his film
Columbia, SC--A South Carolina movie director who also is a former state lawmaker is suing cable TV channels, contending they mixed up one of his films with what he says is a pornographic movie with the same title.
James "Bubba" Cromer said in the suit filed on Monday in Los Angeles that he noticed earlier this month his comedy "The Hills Have Thighs" was going to be on The Movie Channel and Cinemax.
The lawsuit says a television listing had the description of Cromer's movie and its actors. But the Columbia lawyer says what came on instead was a 2010 film with the same name which included nudity and sex acts.
Cromer is asking for an unspecified amount of damages.
The cable channels didn't immediately comment on the lawsuit.

Nope, regular birds. I guess the South Korean ship fired warning shots at a target that they think turned out to be a flock of birds right before they blew up. Perhaps the warning shots were seen as agression by the NORK's and they sent a torp up the SK ships wazoo. Could be seen as a self defense move by the NORK's.

During the same year, the New York newsroom lost 100 staffers to buyouts and layoffs, along with pay and benefit cuts at sister publications.
