Is Marco Rubio Jinxed...
— Jack M.

or did Kendrick Meek make a deal with the devil?

How else do you explain this happening in this, of all, election cycles?

. . Thanks to Libertarian Party candidate Alexander Snitker. At a press conference this morning the 34-year-old office supplies salesman announced he has met the ballot requirements to run for the U.S. Senate — the first Libertarian candidate in Florida's history to do so.

So in an election year when the Democratic nominee in Florida will be lucky to capture 35% of the vote, Marco Rubio, the GOP's nominee-to-be, now faces the hurdle of winning a 4 man race against a "Republican turned Independent", and a "Libertarian".

A four man race in which 3 of the men (well, 2 and Crist) will be splitting the center-right vote against an otherwise unelectable liberal.

Sigh.

Anyone else on the right want to jump into this race too? After all, if you don't, Rubio just might win!

And I guess we can't have that. Probably would get laughed at by the media and stuff.

If Crist jumps then all the LP candidate has to do is take 1 or 2 percent of the vote and it could hand the election to Meek.

Libertarians don't usually do well ANYWHERE. They're a joke party that's never elected so much as a single congressman in 40 years of existence and stick around only to get Democrats (their natural allies) elected.

Charlie Crist would have won this race going away.  Meek didn't have a prayer.

But noooooooooooooo!  We just couldn't abide that RINO sitting in the Senate, with an -R after his name.  We just had to find a *real* Republican!

So now, we're gonna get a Democrat - or an *Independant* who hates the shit outta the Republican Party and plays Jim Jeffords.

My Christ, but you people are fucking stupid.  Next time out, can we just *hold our fucking noses and vote for the guy with the -R?  I mean, I know it's hard to be smart when we've got a hardon for purging a RINO, but is X more *years* of hearing "Majority Leader Harry Reid" really worth giving a RINO his assfucking?

Ah, the Blame Republicans First crowd.

Seriously, they aren't omnipotent, sometimes they make errors.  You should only endorse in a primary if the possible opponent is odious, like a David Duke or a Paulestinian.  But endorsing a (formerly) popular sitting governor for the Senate seat isn't exactly going out on a limb.

The Republican party can't go around being a bunch of church ladies when it comes to ideological orthodoxy.

39 Sansoucy, Meek didnt have a chance against Rubio, either. Your point, such as it is, is invalid. It's perfectly appropriate for a party to settle these kind of differences in a primary. It's less legitimate for the loser of that decision to take his ball and go home, or to run as some kind of 3rd party spoiler. Had Crist been the only viable alternative to Meek, than, yes, perhaps a "hold your nose" kind of vote would have been called for. But this wasn't one of those times.

Yes, another one of those "coincidences" thingies.  The Demonrats financed this asshole to get him in the race. Maybe the Republicans should finance a damn "green party" candidate.

This is bullshit. What we need is some election law that prevents this kind of shit.  As for the NSRC supporting Crist in the primaries they are NOT supposed to do that. Their won party rules say that they are not supposed to support anyone in a contested open primary.

Some States have a provision to prevent this kind of shit. They require a candidate to get > 50% of the vote to win or a runoff election is held. That is what Florida needs.

Posted by: Vic at April 21, 2010 11:34 AM (QrA9E)

57 Well, sanssoucy, we counted on Crist respecting the decision of his party and not being a fucking sore loser who can't stand being told "no". You know, like most candidates who lose the primary, endorse their fellow party member, and then try again next cycle.

Instead, he's leaving the party and willing to risk putting a liberal Democrat in office to avoid having to drop out of the race. Because, you know, that's someone we'd want in the Senate. Never mind his support for cap-and-trade and massive government spending, he's also an unprincipled sore-loser fuck.

So, Jeffrey, the answer to your issue is to torpedo Rubio and hand the election to Crist or Meek who would, of course, be far more damaging to whatever the hell it is the libertarian freak parade is supporting this week.  I believe a little strategic introspection is due on the whole "running peoples' lives" thing.

64 Mr. Natural, He hasn't announced it yet (he has until the 30th) but most of the "chatter" has him going that route. He gave an interview today where he was asked the question, and he said that (paraphrasing) "he had been seeking out people's opinions throughout the state and most were supportive of an independent run". His refusal to rule it out in recent interviews, though, is more telling. I think the operating assumption has to be that he is in the race as an indy until he proves otherwise, as he has had every opportunity to clear the record and hasn't.

Posted by: Jack M. at April 21, 2010 11:37 AM (Ncr1R)

65 If you are going to buy that a libertarian is going to hurt Rubio, then you have to buy that the teachers union will split on crist and meeks.

The problem with these third-party candidates, especially marginal ones like Libertarians isn't that they take votes away, but they take away the narrative.

We saw this in 1992.  Voters were polled after the election and asked who they would have voted for other than Perot.  Other than the ones who said they would stay home, they split 50-50.

What Perot did was become a second anti-Bush candidate.  So at every debate, 2/3rds of the discussion was against the incumbent Bush, who was left at a disadvantage trying to defend himself, not to mention attacking the other two.  If he attacked Clinton as being too liberal, then Perot could swoop in and say that he wasn't.

If the Libertarian guy gets into the debates, it's three against one.  Even if he doesn't, it'll be two against one.  The Libertarian, Crist and Meeks ads will all be anti-Rubio.  Especially the Libertarians, who have no hope of winning, they're all about playing spoiler.

I've noticed one thing about Libertarians and they are all about pointing out what they perceive to be flaws in conservatism while they ignore the wholesale destruction wrought by the Democrats.  If the Obama administration isn't enough to give Libertarians common cause with conservatives, what is?

88 The Libertines are not now and have never been conservatives or Republicans.  Frankly, if not for their entertainment value, we would probably just shoot them on sight.

Remember it was the Libertine vote in South Dakota which made it close enough for Tim Johnson to defraud Thune in his first run for Senate - and that was AFTER the LP candidate WITHDREW and urged his supporters to vote for Thune.

Libertines are basically just idiots, as the Paulbots prove every day.

Rubio will beat them all.  Crist will go straight down the tubes after jumping the party.

90 SEIU and ACORN ought to be able to find a few "Tea Party" candidates too.

No, this is where you get the boat.

94 I can gurantee you that Alex Snitker is not Democrat plant or Soros funded, etc.  If you call yourself a conservative, do you self a favor and visit Snitker's website.  I think you'll find that he is the only real Constitutional conservative in the race.  He's the only candidate that's signed both the 9-12 pledge and the Tenth Amendment pledge.  Do your homework.

Posted by: Adrian Wyllie at April 21, 2010 12:44 PM (A4qUa)

95 If Rubio can't beat three, or a dozen, then he doesn't deserve to win.

What the fuck is this "deserve" shit?  This will actually be an elective office that will make laws.  It matters who takes it and it isn't a question of how worthy Rubio is as a candidate.

Posted by: AmishDude at April 21, 2010 12:48 PM (T0NGe)

96 I think you'll find that he is the only real Constitutional conservative in the race.  He's the only candidate that's signed both the 9-12 pledge and the Tenth Amendment pledge.  Do your homework.

He's nothing of the sort.  He is a socialist.  A hard core commie lib.  He is working for the election of Kendrick Meek (D).  That's what he wants and that is the only possible outcome he can influence.

Don't pull this ultra-principled concern troll BS.  It doesn't matter whom you vote for.  It matters who takes office.

If only the Libertarians can lose 1000 races, then we will be living in the kind of paradise the Libertarians truly want -- free pot and a welfare state.  Well, they're sorta against the welfare state, in theory, they just won't do anything about it.

But the pot, now that's where the action is.

98 "This is bullshit. What we need is some election law that prevents this kind of shit. " An election law something like this? "Florida: The ballot access laws for third parties and independent candidates have been very severe ever since 1931. Since 1931, there have been only two third party candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives on the ballot and only one third party candidate for the U.S. Senate. There has not been a third party or independent candidate on the ballot for Governor of Florida since 1920. Currently, a filing fee of 7% of the annual salary of the office is also required unless the candidate is a pauper, while a third party or independent candidate for any statewide office (other than president) needs 196,255 valid signatures — no independent candidate in any state in the U.S. has ever successfully complied with a signature requirement greater than 134,781 signatures." That's the kind of crap Snitker had to go through to get on the ballot. If that's your idea of democracy or free elections, sod off.

Posted by: Jeffrey Quick at April 21, 2010 01:03 PM (g9neE)

99 Adrian, when you do web searches on your candidate, do you come up with anything not associated with his Senate campaign? I didn't come up with anything. Nothing from his business, nothing from his leisure activities, no charity work, no church activities. Nada. EVERYTHING that's on line about this guy is strictly limited to his ongoing Senate campaign.

I don't trust candidates that are fuckin' cyphers.

101 That's the kind of crap Snitker had to go through to get on the ballot.

And you don't find anything incredibly strange or convenient about the fact that this nobody douche, of all people over all these years, just happens to be the very first candidate to ever clear this prohibitive hurdle.

You probably don't see anything suspect about the "Tea Party" candidate who magically sprang up in Nevada, either.

Sod off yourself, jackass.

Troll on isle 21...

Why should we hold our noses and vote against a conservative in the primary?  Particularly when the conservative wins the election handily against the Democrat candidate.

If you are for real, what you want is for people who do not like the establishment GOP to vote for its chosen candidates, out of fear that they might lash out and vengefully destroy a good conservative candidate.

No fucking thanks.  I still think Rubio will win, handily...but, frankly, now that Crist has shown his true colors, I'd rather have Meeks as a minor one-term Senator than give fagboy one more step on the ladder toward the Presidency.

Posted by: Ken at April 21, 2010 01:52 PM (EawMs)

107 @107 Yes, you'd think that some money would have been funnelled to make it happen, as petitioners don't work cheap, and volunteers don't work enough. If so, it got funnelled through the LP, cause it wasn't Snitker Alexander Andrew Snitker (3) Raised: $1,475 Spent: $812 Cash on Hand: $662 Last Report: December 31, 2009 That's vs. $9m for Crist and $7m for Rubio LP FL contributions for the current cycle are here http://election.dos.state.fl.us/cgi-bin/contrib.exe It's chump change: $3400. So if Snitker was bought and paid for (which is not an unreasonable charge), how was it done? Besides "very slickly"?

108 @110. You go away, party of No Child Left Behind, Medicaid prescriptions, Romneycare, a couple of big wars, and the housing bubble.

Posted by: Jeffrey Quick at April 21, 2010 01:54 PM (g9neE)

109 Wow......

Look, I'm a libertarian (small l, that's important). I vote GOP, unless it's hopeless. So in 08 I voted for McCain, but I voted LP for Senate, because Mark Warner was going to crush Gilmore, and so it didn't matter.

Still, this guy, at least from what I see on his website, seems legit. He put in 8 years in the USMC, so I'm not gonna tear him down.

Look at his website. He wants, among other things, to reform the BLS so that the actual unemployment rate is shown. You know, the thing Ace talks about every time the administration releases some "unexpected" unemployment numbers? He's a Marine, and a businessman. He seems like a good guy, and I agree with most of his policy positions.

Of course, he has no chance of winning, and Rubio is obviously the one to back because he's the best candidate that can actually win. That doesn't mean the LP candidate is a bad man, or a Soros plant. The anger is overblown, IMO. Sure, there are the Libertarians, the purity or nothing morons. They actually vote LP. The libertarian wing of the Republican Party, that's people like me who recognize that we didn't get into the socialist mess we're in overnight, and that it is the work of decades to move back to freedom, those people should be for Rubio. There are a hell of lot more libertarians then there are Libertarians, if you get my meaning.

Proof again that politics is filled with narcissists and assholes (I repeat myself). As long as their friggin namer is on the ticket they don't give one rats ass about the damage they do to the candidate with a legitimate chance of winning this thing.

And...

And if Crist does run as an Indy, I hope someone, somewhere, finally gets pissed off enough to come out of the closet about the beard of a marriage of his.

115:  I was in the Marines.  So was Murtha.  So was Oswald.

There are plenty of men who have been heroic in war and corrupt as hell.  Benedict Arnold wasn't a Marine, but you get my point.

Posted by: Ken at April 21, 2010 03:18 PM (EawMs)

112 Well.

I guess I stepped on a corn (again), but my point is a painfully simple one:

Parties matter - and party affiliation is of primary importance.

Unchallenged, Crist would have won the general election by 30 points.  He might not have been a great conservative, but he would have meant an EZ pickup of one more Republican - and one less Democrat.    Again to paraphrase Dick Morris; "You can vote for the shittiest, most liberal Republican imaginable, and he'll walk right into that Senate chamber and vote for Mitch McConnell as Majority Leader."

Thaaaaat's all I'm sayin', kids.  The Olympia Snowes of the world might not be the people we fantasize about ruling the Senate, but I'd take 51 Olympia Snowes over the 40 we ended up with after the last election we got, anytime.

113 Douchebag, it's a primary. They're supposed to be challenged. But when they lose, they're supposed to -- party, right pal? -- endorse the winner. Not quit in a huff and run independent.

Now Lieberman did this, but his own party stabbed him in the back. Told him they'd back Ned Lamont unless he voted the way they told him to, and to hell with his constituents. Lieberman won.

That's not what's going on here. Crist opposed his own party, and the NRSC still endorsed him. Rubio is more popular, because he represents what voters want -- no government takeovers of healthcare, banks, car companies, loans for college or houses, no higher taxes. They want a robust economy and jobs.

Crist is putting his ego before his party AND the voters. He is out to kneecap his opponent, when that person is doing exactly what democracy demands. Rubio is working with the system the way it was designed. Crist seems to have a problem with that.

It sucks about this Libertarian candidate no one has heard of. He seems to be running purely as a spoiler. Sure, the Democrats have all kinds of dirty tricks up their sleeves. But it's Crist who really sucks. This will finish him in politics for good.
