— Maetenloch According to John Bolton and other experts the Iranians are expected to start putting in the fuel rods into the Bushehr reactor over the weekend at the latest.
Once theyÂ’re in place any attack on the nuclear plant will result in radioactive fallout over populated areas and no doubt severe responses from even relatively friendly countries. The attack in 1981 on IraqÂ’s Osirak reactor took place before the fuel rods were loaded for this very same reason.

Of course the Bushehr reactor is actually the lesser worry since it wouldnÂ’t be able to produce enough plutonium for a weapon for several years. ItÂ’s the labs in the North concentrating highly enriched uranium that are likely to produce the first bomb.
ItÂ’s currently 5am on Friday in Iran. So this is about the last possible moment for Israel to take out IranÂ’s nuclear program cleanly.

Obama will bomb Iran as soon as he is done perfecting a few metaphors.
In all honesty, we won't bomb iraq, it would destroy the democrats in november. they would probably lose a hundred seats if we attacked iran.
it has to be israel.

The reaction, even from "relatively friendly" countries, to an Israeli attack on Iran would be the same, whether there is radioactive fallout or not. Just look at the world reaction to the Gaza operation or to the flotilla incident - both of which were minimal and totally within the bounds of reasonable self-defense - and multiply that by 1000000. That will be the reaction to Israel hitting Iran, no matter what. The "relatively friendly" countries are just waiting for Israel to take out Iran's nukes, immediately after which all those nations (basically the whole world, including the US inder the Indonesian) will set about to destroy Israel. It doesn't matter if the reactor is operating at the time or not. Israel's fate concerning its necessary attack on Iran, so far as the world is concerned, was determined long ago. They look at it as killing two birds with one stone.

Of course a radioactive strike zone is far less able to be rebuilt.
Then there is also the 'Gravity's Rainbow' scenario with regular news updates of missles being thrown back and forth in the Middle East. Hopefully our Star Wars defenses work.

Then Israel's chances of surviving the next 10 years are pretty slim. That's what Bolton is considering.
And, if Israel gets hit, then the chances that they unleash their nuke arsenal are good (though I doubt Israel has it in them to do it) and you don't want to even contemplate the consequences of that.
The world has let Iran get to this point, thereby putting the globe at greater risk than it was even during the Cold War. But, that's the stupidity of the world.

Tim
i agree it won't happen, but Russia will never get involved. Its been goading arabs into wars with israel for the past 50 years, it never gets directly involved.
war in the middle east is extremely profitable to russia. every time the israelis destroy an arab or persian army, the arabs and persians re-arm with russian weapons, and better and more expensive ones than the time before. Russia is on the of the largest dealers of arms in the world. it stands to make a fortune from any middle east war, far more than it will make from Iran buying a couple of reactors.
Also don't forget that the Persians and Russians aren't natural allies, in fact they are historical enemies.
Imagine your russia, you sell someone a nuclear reactor, nuclear materials, weapons, tanks, planes, air defense and then one day, it is all destroyed. Well the Iranians already paid you for it, it didn't cost you a dime, and if the Iranian regime collapses then you have a weaker iran on your southern border. if the regime survives they will want to replenish their stock and the only people that will sell to them are you and the chinese.
it is a win win for russia if israel attacks.

I don't think The Precedent really thinks he can talk to Iran. He wants Israel to have to hit Iran, after which he'll have the US join the Euros and the third world in embargoing or blockading Israel until they have to capitulate, at which point The Precedent would force some insane give-away to the Palis on the Isrealis ... and that would be that.
This is why I think that Israel needs to absolutely crush Iran, and should take the oil fields, too, since it won't change how the world (and the US under the Indonesian) reacts to the strike. Israel might as well make the attack commensurate with the blame they are going to get, anyway. And, if other nations try to kill Israel, they should think about taking the Suez (which they never should have given back to Egypt).
-->Israel has a choice no peaceful, civilized nation should have to make: either let your enemies destroy you or let your friends destroy you.

The one Bob Dylan Song I like.
Neighborhood Bully.
Well, the neighborhood bully, heÂ’s just one man
His enemies say heÂ’s on their land
They got him outnumbered about a million to one
He got no place to escape to, no place to run
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
The neighborhood bully just lives to survive
HeÂ’s criticized and condemned for being alive
HeÂ’s not supposed to fight back, heÂ’s supposed to have thick skin
HeÂ’s supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
The neighborhood bully been driven out of every land
HeÂ’s wandered the earth an exiled man
Seen his family scattered, his people hounded and torn
HeÂ’s always on trial for just being born
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized
Old women condemned him, said he should apologize.
Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad
The bombs were meant for him. He was supposed to feel bad
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
Well, the chances are against it and the odds are slim
That heÂ’ll live by the rules that the world makes for him
Â’Cause thereÂ’s a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
He got no allies to really speak of
What he gets he must pay for, he donÂ’t get it out of love
He buys obsolete weapons and he wonÂ’t be denied
But no one sends flesh and blood to fight by his side
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
Well, heÂ’s surrounded by pacifists who all want peace
They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease
Now, they wouldnÂ’t hurt a fly. To hurt one they would weep
They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
Every empire thatÂ’s enslaved him is gone
Egypt and Rome, even the great Babylon
HeÂ’s made a garden of paradise in the desert sand
In bed with nobody, under no oneÂ’s command
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
Now his holiest books have been trampled upon
No contract he signed was worth what it was written on
He took the crumbs of the world and he turned it into wealth
Took sickness and disease and he turned it into health
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
WhatÂ’s anybody indebted to him for?
NothinÂ’, they say. He just likes to cause war
Pride and prejudice and superstition indeed
They wait for this bully like a dog waits to feed
HeÂ’s the neighborhood bully
What has he done to wear so many scars?
Does he change the course of rivers? Does he pollute the moon and stars?
Neighborhood bully, standing on the hill
Running out the clock, time standing still
Neighborhood bully

Obama hasn't cowed Israel. That's preposterous. If the government of Israel believed that Iran presented a real threat to them, they would launch air strikes without a moment's hesitation - with or without Obama's blessings. Get real.
Besides, until Iran receives all of the materials, components, etc., which Russia offered to give to them, neither Israel, nor the USA, nor anyone else will have a clear picture of precisely what Iran's intentions are.
To launch an airstrike on them at this point would be premature and irresponsible.
Have some faith in the free world's intelligence community. They're more on the ball than you think they are.

Sadly, I wouldn't bet on that. The major problem is the monetary and economic disruptions that will likely emanate after any Israeli strike could end up triggering credit crisis 2.0 - which is barreling down the road at us, anyway. These financial problems stemming from an Israeli strike could be mitigated, if not totally removed, but only if the US and some of Europe supports Israel. Unfortunately, they (and we) are intentionally going to try to magnify any financial problems stemming from an Israeli raid, to turn everyone against Israel, and after that, all bets are off.
That's how I've been looking at the aftermath of an Israeli attack. With Bush, Israel would have had the US on its side, which would have greatly dampened any serious after-effects of the raid, but with The Indonesian, he's just looking to exacerbate and pump up any such consequences. A real crisis (caused by isolating Israel) would be too tempting to let go to waste, and Americans would be thrown for a real loop.

The fuel rods are not radioactive yet. That requires that some fission occur. The reactor won't be powered up right away. So, it does not have to be tonight.
But I don't think that Israel is going to strike the Iranian nuclear program anyway. I think they have decided not to.

The Obama administration, citing evidence of continued troubles inside Iran’s nuclear program, has persuaded Israel that it would take roughly a year — and perhaps longer — for Iran to complete what one senior official called a “dash” for a nuclear weapon, according to American officials.
White House officials said they believe the assessment has dimmed the prospect that Israel would pre-emptively strike against the countryÂ’s nuclear facilities within the next year, as Israeli officials have suggested in thinly veiled threats.
American officials said, in contrast to a year ago, that IranÂ’s nuclear program was not currently the central focus of discussions between top leaders in Washington and Jerusalem. During the last visit to Washington by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel in early July, the Iranian program was relatively low on the agenda, according to one senior administration official.
Welp, so much for those overflight rights. Pretty clear signaling here.

I need to finish off this bottle of wine and go to bed. And hopefully not wake up.

I think that we could do that with nothing more than 50 hot babes flashing their breasts. Maybe we should add in another 100 smoking hot chicks in bikinis ... just to make sure.

76 You put them out of their misery, because they are clearly suffering from hydrophobia, or some other brain eating disease.
I don't think Israel will do something this weekend; will they do something? I think they have to, and they will have to be brutal and brilliant with it (but not as brilliant as they would have had to have been up until now). I'm not so sure that we will not see a major terrorist attack, and then Israel will jump and jump hard.
Sigh, either way, I have a kid sitting right in the middle of it all...and here I sit...wishing a thing comes to pass that would place her right in the middle of it. I'm sure she will be fine, but still it would be very nice to not have her near there when things do finally happen. At the very least -- please Israel, be successful -- be successful beyond anyone's wildest imaginings.

And an Iranian F-4 Phantom II crashed nearby during exercises. The IAF is having a bad week.

I saw, "Jews don't start wars, we just punch racist assholes in the cake hole in 3... 2... 1..."
I'm what I call a "Bacon-eatin' Jew," my Mother's Mother's Mother was a Jew, so technically I am, but not observant except that I don't take shit from anti-Semitic sacks of dung.
As far as Iran goes, I seriously hope they piss their nuclear technology down their pants through incompetence, and I think there's a decent chance of that.
One alternative is a fuel-air bomb, large format at least 2000 lbs, filled not with explosives by cyanocrylate glue (with enough evaporating binder to keep it liquid for a few seconds).
Set it off inside the building and they will never fix it all. Ever door, every machine, every button super-glued shut..

Rain Hell on them until the Iranians have to draw straws to see which surviving corporal has to crawl out and wave the white flag.
Chuck a few bunker-busters on Hamasshole and Hezbian HQ's on the way home. at that point it will be self defense anyway.

Has anyone noticed that for some reason, Israel tends to launch attacks on the Sabbath? It seems to almost be deliberate.

I think that the Israelies might actually wait until the Iranians crank up the reactor and get it going. Then they will crack that place open like an egg. That would hopefully result in the whole site and all the equipment there in becoming highly contaminated and un-salvageable. They would also hopefully get most of the scientist and engineers that built it.
