It Could Be Worse
— Ace

The economy's headed for a double dip and South and North Korea might really, really to go war.

There is some good news. You're not this guy.

Wait, wait, wait -- You're telling me this guy's a blogger? That makes no sense.

Along with DHinMI, Trapper John and Meteor Blades, Greg Dworkin, M.D., 52, is a member of the Daily Kos contributing editor class of 2004, although heÂ’s been active on the site since pre-Scoop days. Areas of special interest include polling data, Iraq and bird flu.

Other areas of special interest include extreme taxidermy, historical reenactments of great moments in diplomatic protocol, and recreational gender confusion disorder.

None of this is fair, of course. I just needed something to post instead of fighting about Sarah Palin with jwest.

Thanks to Krazy Kat.

Unrelated But Also Unimportant: Psych scored big ratings with its Twin Peaks parody/tribute.

Not bad. If you're a fan of either show, or especially both, worth a watch on repeat (or the internet). The victim's name was Paula Merral, so the question posed was "Who killed Paula Merral?"

The mystery made almost no sense and they just announced the solution in a rush without, as far as I could tell, really having found much information along the way pointing to that conclusion. They do that a lot-- they over-write these shows (too many pages) and then when they're forced to cut, they seem to cut out the clues/detection (since, like, who cares?) instead of the comedy bits.

But like I do care about the mystery. Okay, not much, but some. Every once in a while they have a so-so mystery plot. (So-so mysteries are as good as Psych gets, but that's fine, because the comedy parts are the more important part... but let's keep it up at a so-so level, huh?)

They need to get a little more disciplined about writing the right number of pages so they don't chop out the detective part of the show in the editing room.

oh yeah, so let me finish my bicycle story from this morning...

In Cambridge, bicyclists have recently been given license to do whatever they fucking please. They ride in the middle of the road, ride on the sidewalks terrorizing the pedestrians, and they do not obey traffic signals.

The city has built them their own little lanes on some streets and  painted all kinds of stripes and pathways on the roads just for use by bicycles.

Wait, there's more!

These assholes lock their bikes up everywhere and anywhere: parking meters, railings, handicap ramps, street signs, etc.

This morning there was a bike sloppily chained to a parking meter. The bike was on the ground half on the sidewalk and half in the street -- where I wanted to park.

I drove up to it and ran over the wheel. I then backed up to see how much damage I had done. The wheel was ruined but it looked like an accident. So I backed and drove over it again.

This time the bike was so twisted it looked like it was intentional, which is exactly what I was aiming for. Do I feel bad? A little. Will I do it again? Absolutely.

The tea party crowd is merciless and relentless in their condemnation of Obama, but there is another group that stands just as ready to indict and convict Barack Obama: Progressives. Progressives are just as unyielding in their judgment of Obama, just as determined to derail, to thwart, to oppose, what they see as unacceptable governance. Progressive social objectives may be better reasoned and better argued, however, at the end of the day we may be seeing a Faustian synergy developing between two groups with diametrically opposed social agendas. Progressives and tea-baggers working on separate but parallel tracks to discredit the same president. Strange bedfellows indeed. We now have a bona fide intellectual in the Oval Office - such things are rare. This is a man of understanding and insight, but his power to achieve change for good is not greater than the dedication of his supporters. Obama has to rally his supporters through a visible commitment to action, and his supporters must be willing to stand tall beside him.

American President. I guess what I like about Obama is that I get the sense that he would like to, for lack of a better word, change things. The missing link here is what kind of pressure is Obama facing behind closed doors? Even in the public realm we're seeing unprecedented resistance to Obama's attempts at reform, from conservative Republicans and Democrats alike. I like the things Obama has tried to do: Health care reform, foreclosure mitigation, his comments on the outrageous decision by the Supreme Court's five corporate lawyers to essentially duct-tape a for-sale sign to America's electoral system. All of these things are a departure for an American President. He is indeed trying. What concerns me are the things Obama has agreed to: An extension of the US Campaign in Afghanistan, an acceptance of the Bernanke-Geithner "Wall Street must be saved," mantra, a don't-ask don't-tell policy on torture past and present. I guess what redeems Obama for me is that he agrees to these things without losing his disdain for them. I wanted change, and in fairness change really hasn't come yet. The intriguing thing is that Obama may actually want these changes too, and seems to. My impression is that he is meeting resistance in a number of significant forms.

113 The mystery made almost no sense and they just announced the solution in a rush without, as far as I could tell, really having found much information along the way pointing to that conclusion. They do that a lot-- they over-write these shows (too many pages) and then when they're forced to cut, they seem to cut out the clues/detection (since, like, who cares?) instead of the comedy bits. did you watch twin peaks?

119 Greg Dworkin Contributing Editor, Daily Kos :
Feb. 18, 2010

One of the dumbest questions asked in a long time is “are liberals finished” when in fact there’s been no start to liberal governance. And the corollary question of “are conservatives ready?” goes along with a myth that some in the media are attempting to sell before its time: that it was Obama, and not George Bush, that ruined the economy. A widely circulated graph made in Nancy Pelosi’s office puts this in perspective.

Both health reform and the economy will look better in six months than it looks now. And this will be despite the Bayhs and Liebermans of the world, not because of them, and over the objections of Republicans and conservatives, who in fact are not ready to govern and blew it (big time, from Katrina to the economy) when they were given the chance.

@91

Mary,

You must think we are all idiots! I feel sorry for people like you. As Reagan once said......"Our firends on the left aren't bad people....they just know so much that is not so."

You need to do more research, and need to get more of an understanding of what you voted for, because if your really think that your above comment added some sort of honest insight into the realtionship between modern progressives, and the people who actually enjoy being American....you are sadly mistaken!

125 I drove up to it and ran over the wheel. I then backed up to see how much damage I had done. The wheel was ruined but it looked like an accident. So I backed and drove over it again.

This time the bike was so twisted it looked like it was intentional, which is exactly what I was aiming for. Do I feel bad? A little. Will I do it again? Absolutely.

Is the economy going to double dip? I'm curious. I'm 17 and started getting into politics last year. Like a regular kid, I did not care about the 2008 elections, I thought meh. It might be cool to get a black guy as a president. Thank God I did not have the right to vote. Our school made us go through his inauguration speech in an auditorium. This was the first full speech I've heard from Obama. After I instantly thought "SNAKE OIL SALESMAN!!!11!1!". Asked my economics teach (I knew he was a conservative) and he gave me Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. Been a conservative since.

I'm wondering about the economy though, QE seems to obviously not work however that and inflation are driving stocks up like crazy) commodities as well. The dollar is weak to commodities and gaining on the euro. The jobs report is comin tommorow? what will cause the d dip? I'm curious.

@105

Mary,

Now you have pissed me off! After reading your comment @105, it has become clear exactly what you are! You must be confronted!

"I wanted change, and in fairness change really hasn't come yet."

No Mary....what you want is for America to not be America. You are either severely indoctrinated by the Progressive Philosophy and do not understand exactly what you are really asking for in reality, or you are a clear enemy of Freedom. You need to spend more time thinking about what it is exactly that you want!

"This is a man of understanding and insight, but his power to achieve change for good is not greater than the dedication of his supporters."

No Mary...You need to define the term "Change" in that statement. There is no question Obama knows what "Change" for America he wants, but the problem is that people like you who haven't put the pieces of the puzzle together yet, don't understand the "Change" Obama has been going on about isn't in you or your families best interest, and aren't bothered at all that the rest of us have to pay a price for all your Emotion Based, Idealistic, Utopian wish lists.

Terriers season ender has many loose ends that it would be great to follow up.

YouÂ’ve seen the picture, now hereÂ’s a sample of this guyÂ’s workÂ…Â…

·  Should Sarah Palin replace Michael Steele as RNC chair?

The former half-term governor of Alaska doesn’t have administrative skills, organizational experience or any other job qualification for party chair. Her last unfinished job was marred by investigations and scandals. Most importantly, she would have to give up the money she makes now for doing nothing, and actually start working for a living (so the prospect is unlikely)….”

ItÂ’s a good thing IÂ’m not one of those people who make snarky comparisons, because this would seem like a set up.

298 For a while it looked like she was getting better, but they've started going back to the really dislikable Bones.  The episode with the Science Dude was awful.  Are you telling me that she really can't understand why going on a kids science show is a good thing?

That was an awful EP!  And that was after not watching for a long time so it was a slap that she was such a nasty bitch.  And the 'will they or won't they' thing with Booth has gotten old.  Some argue them getting together will kill the show, but all the writers have done is kill the show with whiplash and schizoid breaks.

305 What I hate is that it's almost random week to week what degree of flaming moron Bones is.  Some weeks she's normal, some she's so dumb you figure she voted for Obama.

My guess is they have a pool of writers that submit scripts.... One of the biggest shocks I got as a young fan (of another show) was that often writers don't even know each other, write scripts when they haven't even read other scripts or seen other eps and often know little to nothing about the characters.  One even admitted having not even watched the show before (That he was writing a script for!)  That's the picture I get from Bones.

The Mav made an even bigger asshole out of himself than usual, which I thought was impossible, by blubbering over his fellow POS leaving; too bad the Arizona voters didn't make it a package deal.  Maybe he should send Mega McCanns over to soothe poor old Russ; as long as it gets her to STFU I'm fine with that.

344 239 Psych has been getting painful to watch lately, although this last episode was funny.  Hopefully, this is the last season, and they can end on a high note.  If it goes another season, I probably won't watch.

M wife and I have already stopped watching. The last couple of seasons have been disappointing. I don't know why they turned Shawn into such an idiot. His character was always a little light on the book smarts, but they've taken that part of his character way to far, IMO.

Posted by: holygoat at December 02, 2010 05:23 PM (7rZ2h)

345 Psych is one of my favorite shows, but the writing this season and last has not been up to par.  They may film the show in Canada, but they're phoning it in from Hollywood, and appaently they are unwilling to work nights and weekends to get it right - or past 5pm for that matter.

353 When Psych is funny, it's hilarious.  When it's not, the channel is changed.  Now Terriers on the other hand has some of the best [funniest] writing on television.  The cast is quirky and unique which coupled with the writing makes for superior viewing.  This season just ended on a poignant note which one could live without.  I already work so live in a constant state of poignance overload.  One of the Terriers leads is the actor that played the Cajun on True Blood.  I don't know who the heck the other guy is but he is awe.some.
