You can be Islamophobic, in the form of refusing to run the most innocuous imaginable political cartoons out of a broad-brush fear of Muslims, but you canÂ’t admit it, even when the fear is expressed as a personal feeling and not a group description, winnowed down to the very specific and nightmare-exhuming act of riding on an airplane, and uttered in a context of otherwise repudiating collective guilt and overbroad fearmongering.
Right. We can twist and contort ourselves in fear of Muslims, but we can never admit the reason we are twisting and contorting ourselves -- and repudiating our highest principles -- is out of fear of Muslims. That might make them feel bad about scaring the shit out of us.
I guess the ultimate sort of coercion is the coercion where you're not even permitted to say "I'm doing this because I'm being forced to," but are forced to contrive some fake reason, some claim you're doing it just because you want to.
Hey, a lot of us rightwing bloggers are anonymous for different reasons, but high on the list is Muslims might cut our heads off if they knew where to find us.
But I guess we're not supposed to say that.

Or is it all in our imagination? Because, if the FBI and Homeland Security suggest that we SHOULD remain vigilant, especially in airports and on airplanes, then wouldn't it be wise to be a little, you know, concerned about where these guys are going to hit us next?
Wouldn't it make sense to care about one's safety under those circumstances?
If it does, then is the voicing of those concerns not legitimate for some reason? I mean, if the concern itself is so legitimate that the highest levels of our law enforcement tell us to be vigilant, is saying that the need to be vigilant makes me "on edge" a horrible confession?
I am confused. Should the color of my concern and vigilance be orange or red at times and the expression of my concern be permanently opaque?

Neither can the FBI, CIA or the US Military.
If we could tell the difference it would really make life easier. Then we could kill the bad ones and the good ones would learn that being a bad Muslim is not a good lifestyle choice, 72 virgins or not.
Another thing, What the fuck is a moderate Muslim. Moderate would indicate there is a spectrum of Muslims. Some thinking killing infidels is very wrong and others who believe killing innocent men, women and children who haven't accepted their peaceful religion is just fine. Is a Moderate Muslim one which believes killing some innocents but not all is acceptable. Staying silent when an imam preaches hate is ok. Not going to the FBI, CIA or police when they see their children or friends making bombs is acceptable.
Untill the Extremist Muslims are courteous enough to put a bullseye on their forehead, I think being a little uncomfortabe around Muslims who refuse to blend into our society, speak with a heavy accent or cannot speak english is okay. It is called a survival instinct.
Our government reminds us to be on guard against Terrorists. Since the vast majority of our terrorists seem to be young Muslim males, I think I will be keeping my eye on them.
I never thought I would spend any time defending a liberal loon like Juan Williams but If I don't defend his freedom of speach, who will defend mine. I hope some way can be found to defund NPR and National Public Broadcasting but I don't see it unless we have the House, Senate, Whitehouse and elected officials with enough balls to do so.

When I get on a plane, I take inventory of who else gets on and rate their threat level. Those that look like muslims get my attention, more so if they wear typical muslim garb. Those that speak arabic to other muslims, and those who pray out loud move to the top of the list. When they get up to go to the bathroom, I follow. I also look around the cabin for potential allies that I can recruit if things start getting weird.
There are lots of weopons available on a plane if you need them. Hell, TSA lets me and my wife on the plane with 8 inch sharpened pencils.
Being prepared and the will to fight back are about 95% of a successful outcome. Remember rule #21 in Rules For A Gunfight and practice it.
