It's Time, Tim
— Geoff

November's unemployment numbers were released today, with the latest stats showing a rise to 9.8% and much lower than expected job growth (39,000 vs. the predicted 150,000). According to the household data, there were 173,000 fewer people employed this month than last month.

Stimulus-vs-unemployment-November2010-dotsSmall.gif These are terrible numbers, and they come at a terrible time of year. They're starting to make Geithner's already-dismal prediction of unrelentingly high unemployment numbers look too optimistic.

So it's time, Tim. You're a clever, if not competent, guy, so I'm sure your bags are already packed. Time to hit the road in what's turning out to be a slow but thorough purge of Obama's economic team.

Now you can add "Bus Undercarriage Inspection" to your resumé.

2 Yeah, i already said this in the other threads comments, but I wanted to say it again.

I wonder if the media realizes how much of a joke they are.  The headline at Drudge goes to a WP article about jobs, where once again an increase in unemployment is classified as "unexpected".

Go fuck yourselves WP.  You know what would be a truly unexpected you cock-juggling troglodytes?

A decrease in unemployment.

I guess seasonal hiring wasn't as big as expected?

On the upside, if the congress doesn't prolong the UC checks you will see an uptick on employment. You will have a lot of people taking jobs they otherwise would not have taken as long as the UC checks were coming in, but without them they will need the income.

Throw in the new seven-year moratorium on oil drilling, three years less than I predicted when they claimed it would be "six months," and you have a recipe for some truly depressing economic numbers to come.  Nothing can kill our economy like increasing the mostly fixed cost of _everything_.

My problem is in talking to folks that never even made it to economics 101 and that have bought the liberal emotional arguments (teh childREN!?!?!?!!!!!  FOR TEH CHILDREN!!!!!) hook line and sinker.

The unemployment rate was forecast to hold at 9.6 percent, according to the median prediction of 83 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Estimates ranged from 9.4 percent to 9.7 percent.

Manufacturers cut jobs for a fourth straight month, payrolls dropped at construction companies and government employment declined.

The expert got it wrong again. How unexpected.

The so-called underemployment rate -- which includes part- time workers whoÂ’d prefer a full-time position and people who want work but have given up looking -- held at 17 percent.

The report also showed an increase in the number of long- term unemployed Americans. The number of people unemployed for 27 weeks or more increased as a percentage of all jobless, to 41.9 percent, the highest since August.

those wanting to dig a little deeper into the economic maelstrom we're in may consider reading John Williams web site, shadow stats.  He's a consulting economist and has been tracking the government figures of money supply, inflation and unemployment and has a whole other set of  numbers, the "second set of books" numbers if you will.  John has a lot of free information and "primers" on his site and has prepared a very hard hitting white paper on inflation and hyper inflationary risks.

John has determined that current broad term unemployment is around 22%.

See, I look forward to that part of the debate, 'cause then I can clobber them with that, too:

"Really?  It seems like the 'right thing to do' to institutionalize poverty and prevent any from of upward mobility, Financially speaking?  Wow, that's weird.  See, I thought 'the right thing to do' would be ensure economic freedom so that anyone who applied himself could provide better for himself, his family, and his community.  Sill me, I suppose."

Once you've gotten to the "Well, it seems like the right thing to do" stage, you've pretty well got them if you'll press the point.  And then, you get one of three outcomes: they get a clue and come around, they refuse to get a clue but learn not to argue with you anymore, or they refuse to get a clue and refuse to learn from it- so you get renewable entertainment.  Those are all good outcomes from where I'm sitting.

You want to learn basic economics?

Go down to your local Home Depot for a few hours and observe what goes on there.

You'll see how the private sector creates jobs and expands the economy in the retail, manufacturing, real estate, and construction industries.

Stand at the register watch as customers spend $100 for their stuff. And then think about four things:  1) where that $200 came from, 2) where that $100 in the cash register is going, 3) where the goods purchased came from, and 4) where the goods purchased are going to be used.

The purchased goods might be lumber, nails, tools, or a dish washer.

And then when you go home you can play with the variable of taxes in your head.

How would higher/lower taxes affect the activity you observed at Home Depot?

87 Unemployment could be 20% and the current administration and MSM would say it is still 9.8%, they wouldn't know the truth if it bit them in the ass.

Posted by: Penfold

Who says that they don't know the truth? But what are they going to say? The truth? That they are not only unable to remedy things, but that they're making it worse? Why else do you think they're letting Biden talk, spewing nonsensical numbers? And then later Obama comes out ad refutes the notion of 'shovel-ready', as if he was bringing the tablets down from Mt. Sinai.

Finally, they and theirs are employed. Do you really think that they care? Do you think they care when they threaten to dump anyone in the military who dares question adding Gays as yet another protected group? During two wars AND bad employment. That last one may actually explian the point about the military.

That's true.  Though I just add that to my point total (don't tell me you don't keep score), the more off topic the slander, the more bonus points I give myself.  So, calling me a racist during an economics discussion is worth a few bonus points (about 10 on my personal scale) while calling me an islamophobe in the same discussion gets lots of points (about 100 or so on my scale).

So far, none of the liberals I'm willing to argue with (who are also willing to argue with me) has done anything quite that crazy, but I do get the "racist/sexist" thing sometimes, say, when I'm explaining that the Black Community would actually be much better off with less regulation and without Affirmative Action.

Soothsayer, right on!  And one of the biggest economic drivers is of course housing.  Currently housing supply exceeds demand by a huge margin and new starts and buys are down.

So this genius putz of a prez what does he do?  Allows the dems in congress to grand stand over taxes.

That right there shows the ignorance of this administration.

Business right now is disconnected due to a lack of confidence in both the economy and tax policy.

Tax policy is a low hanging fruit that could be used to bring the country together and calm businesses.

But that ain't happening.  No, we just passed a 4B after school nutrition program.

93 Yes, this is bad news, but we really need to put it into historical perspective.

When you consider that right now we have our very first black president, it seems a small price to pay.

Complaining is just unseemly. I daresay unpatriotic, even.

94 I've been trying to explain concepts like "Raising taxes is bad" to some folks I know, and I think they might better grasp concepts if they read them.

Posted by: Newb at December 03, 2010 12:06 PM (wMXoq)

Just put it to them this way:

What do you think growth is going to be for the next 5 years?  What do you think the growth rate will be for the next five years if we raise taxes?  What about if we lower them?  That should be good enough to let them see the light.  If not, they're hopeless, anyway.

96 @97 - That's really not a completely fair statement.  I know that my HS Economics teacher (a pretty solid lefty) tried to indoctrinate us that higher taxes were better AND that a "progressive" income tax is more just than a flat tax.

For some people, that takes.  So, asking your question, they might not realize what the correct answer is.

That's true.  But at least, with my qeustions, you find out very quickly whether it's even worth trying to go into any deeper explanation or if it would just be wasted time.

Frankly, I'm amazed that no one ever bothers talking about simple growth projections when they are trying to explain why not raising tax rates will not "cost" the US money.  Even the conservatives don't bring up this very simple point.  Libtards claim it will "cost" $700 billion to have tax rates stay the same for the high income earners, but no one challenges them on growth projections and explaining their silly point.

101 More than 6 months, huh? Really? Could this possibly have anything to do with providing 99 fucking weeks of unemployment compensation which prevents the labor market from establishing a clearing price?

The maximum payouts are greater than 40 hours of minimum wage. If you decide to lose money by taking a low-paying seasonal retail job anyway, your weekly checks get smaller when it ends.

I'm guessing a fair percentage of white-collar college graduates can do this math (or are married to someone who can, heh).

102 I took a low paying temp job and reaped the reward of having my UE benefit slashed.  Having said that, the temp job was an opportunity to learn a new skill and now I can go into the next "temp" job at more than double the scale.  I was fortunate to say the least that the opportunity presented itself and I was able to take advantage of it.

104 Why all of the excitement over the new #'s? They have been make believe for a very long time now. When Obama needs them to go down, they go down. When he needs them to go up they go up. Right now he's pushing for extensions to unemployment insurance so from his point of view higher #'s benefit his position. Pure manipulation. Nothing more, nothing less.
