— Dave in Texas June 3, 1979. I had just been kicked out of my first college when the PEMEX platform imploded and bathed the beaches of Mexico and Texas with quite a mess.
That link is to an analysis for purchase, just wanted to show you on a map where the platform was.. way south.
I'm not an engineer, but I get it that there are issues of extreme pressure and counter-control/management involved in tapping oil and gas reserves. We all do really, we've seen the "it's a gusher" clips and all that.
This isn't an engineering analysis of the accident, or an environmental impact study (well, ok a little) so much as it is a personal anecdote about my observations of the last bad one in the Gulf.
If you noted from the map, this platform was waaaaay the hell away from Texas, a 100 or so km from Ciudad del Carmen in Campeche according to the Wiki entry. Down on that hook thingy part of eastern Mexico, across from Vera Cruz. Long haul.
After several weeks, the resulting flow of oil from the wreckage started hitting the Texas coast (it had already been hitting eastern Mexico shores).
So me and 3 of my idiot friends decided to do a road trip on our bikes and take a look. We rode for about 9 hours down to a place near RedFish bay on South Padre and checked out the beaches. The oil had formed into these fist-sized balls of tar that were littering the beach up and down.
And we had the world's first (as far as I know) tar ball fight. Like guys will do, we threw it, ground it into each other's hair, made Mikey eat some. Paintball fights without protective gear or crappy clothes. Later we tried as best we could later that evening to scrub the shit off, and partially succeeded.
It was a mess. I'll give you that. I mean the beach.
And us.
I went back there in 85. Almost five years to the day after they finally capped the thing. And you could not tell it had happened. Texas mobilized cleanup activities, largely scraping sand from the beaches and replacing it. (warning, Aggie link).
We cleaned it up.
The point of this rambling anecdote is that even before Valdez, we'd seen the results of accidents that occur while producing a necessary and needed commodity. It happens. Healthy economies can manage the cleanups. Unhealthy ones can't. If you've been to a few third world shitholes you already know what I'm talking about.

At worse the beach would be closed for a few days after it stopped washing ashore, and then it was fine.
The real problem is marsh like in the gulf, and rocky areas like Alaska, but even there I think it takes care of itself in a few years.
As for contamination , I linked this article above

and there really is a lot seeping out all the time. The real crime is that we let this stuff leak into the gulf rather than drill it out.

By the time I went there, summer of '82, there were very few of these; they were kind of hard, and they were typically a foot or two in diameter. I assume they were from the same leak.
You'd see one of these things about every 50 feet or so, seems like. No big deal at all.

Great stuff Dave. I am a geologist and worked in the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee as a young pup - I have drilled a gusher in Pappy's back 40.
Very late tonight I will be traveling to Gulfport, MS where I will be collecting samples of the crude to confirm the grade. Typically this area yields light sweet, but an environmental scientist at LSU ran a sample and reported he had never seen so many asphaltenes (black tar). His description was something akin to oil sands from Canada. I suspect shitty lab work/the volatiles were already gone by the time he took his sample. That or he has an ax to grind and is trying to keep the fear factor as high as possible.
Anyway, it's a big deal because light sweet will be much easier to deal with down the road. If it is light sweet, we will have a peanut butter colored goo on the sand to clean up.

All the NJ problems were coming from NY. If I recall correctly, the medical stuff had to be burnt, but it wasn't since the special haulers were cheating, and dumping moved from "out yonder" to 3 miles, to finally 20 miles out, but it still washed ashore. NJ shores.
It was outlawed on the Federal level, but NY was so f-ed up they kept needing extensions and the problems washed onto another state anyways so what was the rush?

I saw a commentator ask why they sank the rig with the fire extinguishing efforts (and why put out the fire at all). That made sense to me. Seems like a rig on the surface is going to create less of a problem than one that sinks and, presumably, tears up the pipe on the way down.
It seems like they should have let it burn, but I can understand the motivation to put out the fire more--the search for the missing. But, like I indicated, sinking the rig seems like an incredible mistake.

Ok, we need to nip this in the bud, right away. I don't know if anyone has explained it yet, but here's what happens with petroleum on water.
Oil is a mixture of many different weights of chemicals, from very light Butane to Asphalt. All put together they are lighter than water, so oil floats. The lighter portions evapoate over time, so what is left becomes denser and denser until it is the same density as water or heavier and begins to sink, coalesce and move with the undercurrents. That is why sea bottom organisms are threatened by the oil spills, and why the beaches usually become contaminated with tarry asphalt balls.

That's simply not possible! I talked it over with Willie and we both agree it was an inside job. Steel DOES NOT burn.
I'm going to call Joy now and get her take. Be right back!

We've had bigger oil slicks here on the Gulf Coast when Italian-Americans have held their annual conventions here.
Yeah, but it's not so much the oil-slicks as the fish kills from all the garlic.

Good find on that Greece article, Herr.
Holy shit is it going to get bad there. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a coup in the works.

Dave and Texas Jew, you guys probably have the best perspective on this post regarding how much they knew and when they knew it. If this is right the Feds knew this was going to be a big problems days ago and didn't respond. This is a vid from NOAA discussing the size of the spill.

Facts I am in a position to know:
The Ixtoc blowout in the Bay of Campeche: They had one of the Cameron BOP's upside down. BOP's will only hold pressure from one direction and won't work upside down. I remember the tar balls too. It was a much bigger release of hydrocarbon than the Deepwater Horizon is likely to be.
Microbes digest hydrocarbons so all of it is gone. Ever wonder where all the tons of rubber that have worn off tires has gone? There should be drifts of it along the roadways, right? Microbes ate it.
The drill crew and the two cement experts (Swaco) who were killed never had a chance. They were awaiting a boat bringing casing cementing equipment when a temporary bridge plug apparently failed. That caused natural gas to migrate up the hole, expanding as it moved due to reduced pressure as it neared the surface. The driller never even got to push the ESD button for the stack to initiate the emergency shutdown sequence.
The talk about additional safety equipment used in Norway or Scotland but not required by the Evil Bush and Darth Cheney is utter bullshit. They are the exact same rigs, they move all over the world. There are different requirements for the volumetric capacity of subsea BOP's in Norway but it would have made no difference.
The Horizon listed and eventually sank because all the water they were spraying from the firefighting boats gets into open hatches and flows down into the hull's equipment spaces. The ballast control system was unmanned and unoperable after everyone evacuated so the rig began to list and finally topple.

And there'll be a no-limit credit card when it comes to cute shit like otters and dolphins and whatever. Didn't they spend something like $80,000 on one single otter at the Valdez site?
When the Torrey Canyon went down off Spain, about half of the spill site was cleaned up before the Spanish government ran out of the money they'd been given for the cleanup. So they walked away from the rest. Biologists went back about 7 years later and found the areas they tried to clean (using detergents, etc) were still recovering, and the areas they'd left the hell alone were nearly spotless. Oil is a food source and what do you know, there are various microorganism that'll munch down on it. The food source expands, they breed like hell, the food source is gone, they die, all the sea critters that eat dead shit clean them up, and all is well. Might even get some nice crabs out of it. (The same thing happened at the Valdez site. Some of the areas where they steam-cleaned the rocks are still desolate.)
And my first wife used to tell me about the beaches off Santa Barbara getting hit with seeps every once in a while. Her parents would pour kerosene into a pan so the kids could clean the tar off their feet. She's a raving loony enviro, but even she admits Mother Nature can be a bitch.

Ohio Dan, I think it's largely Obama depending on the forces that were already engaged, until it became larger as it was. It wasn't a political problem until now.
In some ways I think George W fell into that same trap with Katrina.

I remember the 1979 oil spill too as I and my family vacationed a lot on South Pardre Island. As I recall, even with oil on the beach and in the surf, the tourist business on South Padre didn't skip a beat.
Here in Texas, we regularly get environmental disasters like tornados, hurricanes, all kinds of oil production events e.g. refinery explosions, spills, etc. but since we are doers rather than whiners, we just clean up the disaster mess and get on with life.

Had to get some sleep.
Yes, it is similar to the W Texas stuff in that it is low in sulfur (sweet). Probably not as light (density). WTI is considered the Cognac of crude.
Crude is named by the source location (field) - Brent (north sea) and Arab light. All with more sulphur and higher density than WTI. BCF 17 is the Venezuelan shit.
Just got my wake up call, now they think the slick won't even reach Mississippi coast. Good news for them, longer boat ride for me - I get sea sick in a bathtub. Time to go.

Am I the only person who wonders why, after 2 weeks, nobody has gone down to at least attempt to cap Deepwater Horizon's well? I'd venture a guess that there is some federal regulation keeping anybody from doing it. I know this country, and others, have the engineering capability to do this. So why is it still spewing oil? I'd venture another guess that this bunch of thugs in the Whitehouse is happy that this happened, and they are going to be positively orgasmic when the pictures start rolling in of cute little marine mammals and birds covered in oil. Then they can all say "See? This is why we shouldn't be drilling."

Not to advertise another political blog, but LibertyPundits is listing a story that the rig was sunk by a NorK submarine. The source is the Kremlin and they are saying the actual cause is known by the US Govt and the Feds have imposed a complete media blackout on the real cause of the fire/sinking of the rig.
Additionally, the rig was owned by Transocean, BP was contracting the rig.
Boys and Girls, I'm getting dizzy from the spin...
