Japan unemployment rate unexpectedly increases
Recovery from worst post-war recession hindered

— Purple Avenger

It would be a big upgrade were we so afflicted.

...The jobless rate rose to 5.1 percent from 5 percent, the statistics bureau said today in Tokyo...
In other news, UK Consumer Sentiment unexpectedly dropped
...An index of sentiment fell to minus 18 from minus 16 in April, the market researcher said in an e-mailed statement today in London. Economists had forecast that the gauge would be unchanged...
Americans apparently aren't gushing confidence either; its predicted they'll be spending less on vacation travel this summer than even last year.
...AAA estimates families will spend an average of $809 on summer travel, compared with $876 in 2009, even though flying is more expensive than it was a year ago. They're knocking down the cost, travel agents say, by staying closer to home, choosing less-expensive modes of transportation or by picking destinations based on the best fares and lodging they can find...
This sharp decrease in vacation spending is apparently linked to the vaunted bazillion new jobs saved/created and drunken sailor style spending spree those frolicking new job holders have embarked upon.

Don't worry, the best and the brightest in DC are thinking up ways to make even closer-to-home vacations more expensive.  Such as this harebrained idea:

Gasoline Prices May Will Skyrocket Amid Oil Tax Hike

Democratic Senate and House leaders have agreed on a 300 percent increase in the oil excise tax, to 32 cents a barrel from 8 cents now. The hike is as part of the tax and spending bill likely to be approved this week. So you can expect gasoline prices to rise down the road.

Sooooooo ...The private sector is bleeding jobs, local municipalities are struggling with budget deficits, and this NJ teacher demands a pay raise.

GIMME!

(same video as before, but as it turns out this teacher makes mega bucks.  Yet, she proclaims, we tax payers must compensate her for her education!  Behold the government union gimme gimme gimme mentality.)

So, then it stands to reason, the government must pay off everyone with a college education?

37 Anyone have any experience with a natural gas power generator?  I'm thinking of getting one of those for emergency power since this Hurricane season is starting to look like it's going to be a doozy.

If you are depending on those political "scientists" at NOAA I wouldn't count on it. They have predicted massive hurricanes for the past 3 summers all due to "Climate Change" and have been wrong every time.

As for portable generators I have never seen one that uses natural gas or propane.  I have operated an engine driven fire pump that ran off of natural gas. It had a tendency to backfire through the carb and eat itself. No adjustment of the timing would stop it.

I have a 10,500 watt trifuel generator and love it. Bought the trifuel because it is used infrequently and didn't want to worry about stale gasoline and gumming up of the carb. But I still have the option to use gas if it is more available in an emergency.

I did a lot of research about them after tour recent Nor'Easter took out our power for 5 days.

You have to decide how many of the circuits in your home you want to power, and then go from there. I chose a manual transfer switch and a gas generator, but that requires that I am around to start the generator and plug it in. My dad is going the auto-transfer switch with an 8kw natural gas generator with auto-start. That is going to run him $3,500 for the generator and another $1,000 to run the gas line, and probably $500 for the electrician.

74 "Anyone have any experience with a natural gas power generator?  I'm thinking of getting one of those for emergency power since this Hurricane season is starting to look like it's going to be a doozy."

We have an LP-powered 10kw Generac backup power generator here on the ranch (we're w-a-y off the grid, and use solar panels as our main source of power). LP knocks generator performance down a bit (say, 8.5kw vice 10kw), and I'd guess that natural gas would introduce the same small performance issues. Plus we live at 9,000 feet, so altitude and sparsity of oxygen therein also adverseley affects output. That said, in the winter months it'll bulk charge our deep-cycle batteries in a couple of hours. We run two households on this system, and we've never been able to throw that generator offline with over-demand.

Posted by: jwpaine at May 28, 2010 10:30 AM (g4J4S)

75 BTW, CDR: That generator I mentioned in #87 (in response to your question at #32) has run every other day during the winter months for 11 years now. Engine is very touchy about coolant and oil levels but otherwise it runs like a champ; the only problems we've had have been with the motherboard; important tip: do not try jumping the starter battery while it is attached to the generator, unless you like the smell of fried PCBs.
