Recovery from worst post-war recession hindered
— Purple Avenger It would be a big upgrade were we so afflicted.
...The jobless rate rose to 5.1 percent from 5 percent, the statistics bureau said today in Tokyo...In other news, UK Consumer Sentiment unexpectedly dropped
...An index of sentiment fell to minus 18 from minus 16 in April, the market researcher said in an e-mailed statement today in London. Economists had forecast that the gauge would be unchanged...Americans apparently aren't gushing confidence either; its predicted they'll be spending less on vacation travel this summer than even last year.
...AAA estimates families will spend an average of $809 on summer travel, compared with $876 in 2009, even though flying is more expensive than it was a year ago. They're knocking down the cost, travel agents say, by staying closer to home, choosing less-expensive modes of transportation or by picking destinations based on the best fares and lodging they can find...This sharp decrease in vacation spending is apparently linked to the vaunted bazillion new jobs saved/created and drunken sailor style spending spree those frolicking new job holders have embarked upon.

I simply can't believe these numbers. ~5% is considered stastically full employment for any country, we should be so lucky.

Don't worry, the best and the brightest in DC are thinking up ways to make even closer-to-home vacations more expensive. Such as this harebrained idea:
Gasoline Prices May Will Skyrocket Amid Oil Tax Hike
Democratic Senate and House leaders have agreed on a 300 percent increase in the oil excise tax, to 32 cents a barrel from 8 cents now. The hike is as part of the tax and spending bill likely to be approved this week. So you can expect gasoline prices to rise down the road.

Japan's official unemployment stats are as fudged as ours are. Real-world joblessness there is probably at about 15%. They were over 10 last summer, when I last saw a de-fudging.
We're probably pushing 25. New normal.

(True story: they singled out my four-year-old for extra screening when we flew three years ago. Apparenly, her teddy bear looked suspicious, and her sparkle princess shoes screamed, "Terrorist!")

Good morning.
Sooooooo ...The private sector is bleeding jobs, local municipalities are struggling with budget deficits, and this NJ teacher demands a pay raise.
GIMME!
(same video as before, but as it turns out this teacher makes mega bucks. Yet, she proclaims, we tax payers must compensate her for her education! Behold the government union gimme gimme gimme mentality.)
So, then it stands to reason, the government must pay off everyone with a college education?

I can't get excited about this sort of thing if I don't know the methodologies. Are they averaging people who aren't traveling into the spending? Is this just the time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day?
My cube neighbor took his six kids to Disney in April and they'll be home all summer. Survey says they didn't get a summer vacation, but they've had a good 2010.

Someone posted it on another thread yesterday and I don't have the names. It is not just an "oil tax". It is a whole new host of taxes, along with some more union bailout.

Lemon Kitten, that same teacher makes over 100K plus benefits. As a public employee, how much she makes is available on the internets!
http://360w.sl.pt
That's some sweet tax-payer funded moola. The point is-- she is demanding MORE money. More money at a time when the government cannot afford it.
The union mentality:
"Screw you, I want mine."
We are facing budget shortfalls, and many teachers like her will not agree to do the right thing: Simply agree to a 1 year pay freeze.
The rest of us private sector suckers (wage slaves) don't have that luxury and many of us are out of work. Oh noez! the delicate and precious teacher demands a RAISE. Damn the rest of us, she better get one.

If you are depending on those political "scientists" at NOAA I wouldn't count on it. They have predicted massive hurricanes for the past 3 summers all due to "Climate Change" and have been wrong every time.
As for portable generators I have never seen one that uses natural gas or propane. I have operated an engine driven fire pump that ran off of natural gas. It had a tendency to backfire through the carb and eat itself. No adjustment of the timing would stop it.

That is exactly right. I guess they keep predicting maximum hurricanes and hope to get lucky. Maybe this year.

I have a 10,500 watt trifuel generator and love it. Bought the trifuel because it is used infrequently and didn't want to worry about stale gasoline and gumming up of the carb. But I still have the option to use gas if it is more available in an emergency.

Posted by: Vic at May 28, 2010 06:03 AM (6taRI)
I did a lot of research about them after tour recent Nor'Easter took out our power for 5 days.
You have to decide how many of the circuits in your home you want to power, and then go from there. I chose a manual transfer switch and a gas generator, but that requires that I am around to start the generator and plug it in. My dad is going the auto-transfer switch with an 8kw natural gas generator with auto-start. That is going to run him $3,500 for the generator and another $1,000 to run the gas line, and probably $500 for the electrician.

You might need a larger gas meter if you get a big generator. It's a scam around here; ConED (NY) charges $1,400 to upgrade a meter.

But they could never justify their view before, anyway. It's like Brooks and his pant creases. They were shamelessly stupid about their assessment and now they are acting as if they had just discovered something new.
What gets me about Noonan and Brooks and the rest of the Vichy scum is that anyone pays them to write. They are totally worthless but they still get jobs doing something they are not at all skilled at - just like the inept, America-hating fool they loved.

The British liquid would-be bombers were going to use their infant's diaper to get explosives aboard, but that wasn't until 2006 (I hate those people, I really do).
I have been stopped and searched for pork chops (...yeah, jihadis are gonna be flying with pork chops...), summer sausage, cheese (understandable, since it's the same density as some plastic explosives), AA batteries, crayons, and seed beads for embroidery. It's kind of a game now.
The thing they didn't stop and search? A digital countdown timing device with no OFF switch (chess clock).

Do you know what would be an awesome way to balance the budget, not cut one cent from any precious state program, and fight the boy-cotters at the same time?
A "temporary" $100 per head surcharge on hotel rooms. Wont cost Arizonans a dime.

We have an LP-powered 10kw Generac backup power generator here on the ranch (we're w-a-y off the grid, and use solar panels as our main source of power). LP knocks generator performance down a bit (say, 8.5kw vice 10kw), and I'd guess that natural gas would introduce the same small performance issues. Plus we live at 9,000 feet, so altitude and sparsity of oxygen therein also adverseley affects output. That said, in the winter months it'll bulk charge our deep-cycle batteries in a couple of hours. We run two households on this system, and we've never been able to throw that generator offline with over-demand.
