White House apologizes after diplomats turned away


The White House apologized on Thursday after a number of foreign diplomats were turned away from a glittering diplomatic reception because of a security snafu.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the high-powered networking session in the ornate East Room of the White House on Tuesday afternoon, an annual event popular with the diplomatic corps.

But a number of ambassadors were held up outside the reception, as their names and dates of birth apparently became mixed up in the computer system used by the Secret Service to clear visitors to enter the White House.

"There was information that was inputed incorrectly," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

"We certainly apologized for that inconvenience. I believe the State Department has also made phone calls about that, expressing our regret (at) any error," Gibbs said.

The New York Times reported that the Pakistani ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani was among up to 30 or so envoys held up at the White House gate, at a time of rising tensions between Washington and Islamabad.

Ironically, inside the reception, Obama waxed lyrical at the capacity of such events to forge ties between envoys -- in comparison to more formal official encounters.

"I'm mindful of that old saying about diplomacy -- that sometimes more can be accomplished at one party than 20 serious conversations," Obama said.

"I look forward to all that we can accomplish together, tonight and beyond."

In an ideal political environment, each issue would have it's own bill.  Pork projects that serve as the political glue for the political elite, would never see the light of day.  The buddy system is the problem with government, and one that will partially be addressed by electing a group of brand-new legislators.  It takes time to establish a network, in order for politicians to use government for their own personal gain. 

People like Carnahan should go to jail for what they've done!  People like Jack Murtha....  People like Harry Reid & Chris Dodd.....

Left-wing legislators invested heavily in 'Green technology' before diverting taxpayer money into those same industries.  Why wasn't that considered 'insider trading'?

Let's hold a referendum on 'Bee Insurance', alone.  Let's find out if everyone is willing to contribute to this same cause, when they are not threatened in any way.

Pork is not the price of doing business in Washington DC, it is a corruption of the political process.  When you add the 'John Kerry, Waste-The-Taxpayer's-Money Fund' to a military spending bill, you are holding hostage the loved ones of voters who serve on an active battlefield.

"Smaller pieces" will work for most things in congress, but military spending bills should disallow any inclusion of non-military issues. (like immigration reform)
