— DrewM He did this every now and then during the '08 campaign. I know I should know better, it's just an election season contrivance that will be forgotten once Hayworth is gone and it's safe for the conservative screwing Mav to return but, it's kind of a cute idea, right?
"When I say repeal, people say you're not going to be able to do it," he said on KQTH FM Radio. "I am confident we will get majorities in both houses in the fall. And that means the power of the purse...If we cut off the money, it doesn't take an override to a veto."McCain's comments shows that GOPers are considering alternatives to strike down the healthcare law, passed with a party-line vote this month, outside of repealing it outright.
Brooke Buchanan, a McCain spokesperson told The Hill that the move would be done using "fencing language" in an appropriations bill that would get rid of the health bill funding.
But under the constitution, the president has the right to veto any bill that is passed by Congress. Yet Buchanan said that placing the language in the appropriations bill would force Obama to veto the entire legislation, suggesting that the president would rather not take that action.
It's actually quite simple (in theory)...Obama can veto appropriation bills until the cows come home but he can't force Congress to add anything to the bills by vetoing them. What Obama can do is force a government shut down like Clinton did in the '90s as a way to bring pressure on the Republicans to add money in. Then the media arm of the DNC (aka ABC, CBS, NBC, etc) go into action a show all the horrible things that happen when people don't get their government money.
At that point it becomes a political showdown and a contest of wills.
How that would play out is tough to say at this point. My guess is Obama would win out in the end. The messaging power of the presidency is too strong to go up against a fractured Congress with 535 different agendas, the proverbial herd of cats.
Still, that's all a long way off. Right now I like that McCain is fighting back against the 'it can't be done' narrative that is starting to take hold. As I said yesterday, repeal is going to be a long and hard process. We aren't going to have the votes after this November but it's not a one election cycle fight.
As I said the day after this bill passed, it was Day 1. All past transgressions were forgotten (not necessarily forgiven) for anyone willing to fight this fight. I know supporting McCain only ends in tears but for now...go Mav!
Don't forget to check the Club for Growth's "Repeal It" website to see if your candidate(s) have taken the pledge.

I just found out from a new History book that that Clinton gov shutdown had been planned in advance of the budget being submitted. Clinton intended to do the "shutdown" regardless of what the congress passed and sent him.
The plan was to shutdown a few non-essential agencies and get the media to blame the Republicans. Well it worked then.
It will not work now. We have the internet and alternative media that will get the word out. Besides which the MSM has shot their wad in 08. NOBODY believes them anymore.

Yeah, repeal would be good, but IMO we the huddled masses might consider pressuring wherever possible, our elected representatives at all levels that the constant drumbeat to find new ways to suck money out of people with taxes is going to bring this country to its knees - pronto.
The only way, imio, is to take the nasty tasting medicine and make the tough spending cuts. Taxes stifle everything that could possibly save this country.
Taxes - even worse than global effing warming - dammit!

Giving all your love to just one man
You'll have bad times
And he'll have good times
Doing things that you don't understand
But if you love him you'll forgive him
Even though he's hard to understand
And if you love him
Oh be proud of him
'Cause after all he's just a man
Stand by your man

A little taste of the fight we need to bring to the democrats in NOV. - starting.....
NOW.
Over at the Club for Growth, Andy Roth lays out how South Dakota's Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin(D) rarely dissents from party orthodoxy:
"She also voted for card check, a $300 billion bailout for Fannie and
Freddie, for SCHIP, for Obama's budget, for a massive increase in the
national debt limit, for the FY10 Omnibus, for Davis-Bacon
requirements, and for countless earmarks (like Rangel's "Monument to
Me" and the South Carolina Aquarium) .
She has also voted
against a handful of free trade agreements, against offshore drilling,
against a bill that would stop Fannie/Freddie from borrowing from the
Treasury, and against permanent repeal of the Death Tax."

They are all damn politicians.

Imperfect vs. socialist - PICK.

"John McCain's proposal, George Bush's proposal to drill offshore here in Florida, and other places around the country, would not provide families with any relief, this year, next year, five years from now," he said. "Believe me, if I thought there was any evidence at all that drilling could save people money who are struggling to fill up their gas tanks by this summer or the next few years, I would consider it, but it won't."

Eliminating funds for the health law would likely be done through the appropriations process in Congress
So couldn't there be some alternative form of funding? Who's to make sure that cash set aside for one agency can't just be passed anong to another? Also, with things like TARP, there is a ton of money that the executive controls which has no real limits. I'm not so sure that Obama and Co. have teh smarts or will to do something like that, but Obama did say he'd be willing to be a one-term pres if he passed his healthcare shit.

Yeah but you can't get it off the books until we have the White House or veto proof majorities in both houses (67 votes in the Senate and 287 votes in the House) .
Until then, defunding is the best weapon in the arsenal and if Mav is willing to try and wield it...then I'm in.
One step at a time.

Highly doubtful. The only reason anyone gives the idiot messiah approval is because either 1) they are anti-American loons who enjoy seeing the US go down the tubes or 2) they are still scared of being seen as "racists" by the pollsters. Other than that, no one with a brain thinks that the Indonesian Imbecile is doing anything correctly.
The messaging power of the presidency is too strong to go up against a fractured Congress with 535 different agendas, the proverbial herd of cats.
Messaging power? This is the same Precedency that gave 23,321 speeches about health scare and saw falling numbers every time he opened his stupid, lying mouth. I think you mean the "transparent lying power of The Precedency". Anyone with a brain would attack this ineligible, un-American traitor occupying the White House every chance they get. And shutting this government down would be a hugely popular position with the people who count. Those who would be against it are just the people in category 1 from above, and they need to be marginalized and made to feel as unwelcome as much as possible - since the destruction of our is their intent.
The only danger is that the GOP loses what little balls they have and sinks into some non-confrontational appeasement of the traitorous left, as iowahawk's piece predicts.
As to McShame, he will be taken out in the primary by JD, after which McShame will spend his retirement sticking his nose into politics and trying to push all the crap he's famous for. If what you are saying were to come to be, the United States might decide to re-elect the ineligible retard but that US wouldn't include the bulk of the energy states, which would have split off to form a union that is actually beholden to the Constitution and the American creed. The remaining shell of the US would have nothing (as even the remaining energy states, like California, don't allow their energy to be used) and would be a dead letter within a decade.

2. Of course Gore would be worse than McCain in that seat, but Gore could not win that seat. (my wording was hyperbolic, I admit)
The point is that R's are fighting against a popular impression that conservatism is unreasonable. Kids think we hate gays and poor. Liberals think we just want to exploit the middle class and minorities. etc. R is a party built on principles, and whenever we make exceptions we destroy the brand. All we have is the brand.
The D's have a coalition, and their brand is meaningless since they run on issues -- vote D to get more Obama money, get free healthcare, get more money for your union. get citizenship,...

Neither does McCain.
Explain.
That needs to be explained?
Tom Coburn and Jim DeMint do NOT hold any positions of authority within the senate. They're practically pariahs.
A party full of McCains, if it were to win a majority, would be led by a bunch of McCains. It would never promote DeMint to leadership.
Wasn't DeMint actually the guy McCain told to fuck off because he 'knew more then anyone in the room'? There's no love lost here.
And leadership in the senate is mostly handed out on terms of seniority, and who's turn everything is. If you want DeMint in a leadership position, a whole bunch of dinosaurs are standing between those two things.
John McCain will sooner be Senate (majority/minority) Leader then Jim DeMint.

The point is that R's are fighting against a popular impression that conservatism is unreasonable. Kids think we hate gays and poor. Liberals think we just want to exploit the middle class and minorities. etc.
And whenever you try to convince them we don't just hate everyone by backing away from conservative policies, it reinforces the idea that conservative policies are hateful.

If any voter in Arizona is stupid enough to fall for this then they deserve exactly what they get, sadly though the rest of us will end up paying for that stupidity in droves as well.
I'll be donating to Hayworth's campaign again shortly, I recommend other like minded individuals do the same. McCain is exactly the sort of "Republican" we don't need, someone who will throw us and all conservative principles under the bus the minute he thinks it's safe to do so.
He's been doing this shit for years, and I see absolutely no indication that he'll change now. While I'm glad he's speaking out against the Republican retreat and surrender strategy on Obamacare, I'm sorry I'm just not buying it.
It smacks of a cynical attempt at regaining the conservative support he's lost in his home state, as evidenced by Hayworth's current standing there in the polls. I think the best thing for McCain, and for America, is for him to get ousted in this next election.
He was given a choice, several times, between Main Stream Media approval and conservative principles. Time after time he went with the MSM. Time for him to reap what he has sown.
Posted by: StuckOnStupid at April 01, 2010 08:45 AM (e8T35)
I don't think this is correct. In these standoffs I think the President wins when he is looking to have something cut from a bill and considered separately, not added in.
The Repubs can simply say we will have a separate appropriations bill for health care with a separate bill like defense. It's up to the President to show why it must be in THIS bill, always an uphill battle. The President knows you get very different vote counts, and bills, for omnibus versus stand alone bills which is why they are always sliding this stuff in under the table.

A party full of McCains, if it were to win a majority, would be led by a bunch of McCains. It would never promote DeMint to leadership.
And that's what put Pelosi and Reid in charge the last time around to "drain the (Rino) swamp".

I got the form in PA. They have a very odd question, in addition to the race question, asking only about whether you are hispanic or of spanish origin. I have not a clue what the hell that is all about or why it was allowed on. It is insane. There is even a note saying that the tow questions - the separate hispanic and race questions - overlap but should both be filled out by hispanics. Pure insanity.

Not a big McCain fan and I have no trust at all in his staying with this. But I'm at least glad to hear that his initial ploy isn't to start out by suggesting that Republicans need to reach across the aisle and then asking Obama what he would like to see the Republicans do.
Yesterday this time we were griping about the GOP taking their negotiating chips off the table before the battle has really been joined. Better at this stage to see some people putting a few chips back on the table than the talk of tinkering around the edges of the bill and "keeping the good things".

agree w/ 145.
and Perhaps Palin has helped bring McCain around?...that and the prospect of losing his job. Whatever the source of McCain's inspriation, it is very helpful to have the GOP standard bearer of 08 fully on board w/ repeal, to help stem the flow of GOP squishes back to what they think is safer ground.

The interminable prick did exactly that during the Presidential election. The minute he was up in the polling (right after picking Palin) he went to La Raza and told them that he would be pushing his treasonous aiding and abetting of illegals as his highest priority. And that was while all of us kept our mouths shut about his insane, criminal desire to give extra citizenships to criminals who are already citizens of other countries, in order to avoid the greater evil of the Indonesian Imbecile.

Doubtful. I hope that Palin realizes that the slack people are giving her in stumping for McShame is going to disappear pretty quickly. The argument of personal loyalty is hollow (governance is not a personal issue) and will not make it past the next few weeks.
Posted by: progressoverpeace at April 01, 2010 08:57 AM (N49h9)
And where is Steele? According to HH he is out meeting with the amnesty people getting set for round III instead of fixing the damn primary rules that gave us McCain with 30% of the vote.
That is the real problem. Not just that conservatives did not get the candidate that they wanted, but that the candidate we got was only supported by 30%, hated by 30%, and 10% were indifferent.
A large portion of the 30% that hated his sorry as stayed at home in 08. The old strategy of the "lesser of two evils" because "what's the damn difference, they are both evil SOBs".
If it had not been for Sarah Palin it would have been a 50 State blowout.

Posted by: Guy Fawkes at April 01, 2010 09:01 AM (7VvJB)
Remember, the GOP is a club. Their club goal is to take and hold seats, not to govern in any particular way. Michael Steele makes the (correct) assumption, SarahPalin makes the (correct) assumption, etc etc, that the incumbent has a much better chance of winning than the primary challenger.
Do not expect the GOP to suddenly go all ethical or consistent on us. Expect them to back their best chance to win.

It ends in the same place either way.
All you can argue for is a Republican Party that serves as a socialist snooze button. It's not fighting to win, just to buy a bit more time to drag out the experience of losing. Let the fundemental transformation of America into the antithesis of it's original values occur, just transform it a bit slower please.
And there is some justice to it.

If the environment for replacing statists by relative non-statists or older-blood with newer-blood isn't here now, then it never will be. These occasional political tsunamis are exactly when you must make a point even at the risk of losing because the odds of losing are as minimal as possible. Liberalism is now out. Statism is now out. Incumbency is not out yet, but it's surely frowned upon. Old faces that have a bad record are out. If another serious candidate had challenged McCain from the Right, I'd have looked at him/her. There aren't, so Hayworth wins because I'm unwilling to trust McCain.
I've just made my first donation to Hayworth's campaign. This round of SarahPAC funds has been re-diverted. This isn't personal. It's business. Mostly.

Not a frigging chance. If the choice is between supporting McCain and living with Healthcare reform, I'll live with Healthcare reform. Sure it'll trash the country. Possibly even break the country in half.
Maybe it's time that happened.
But support McCain? Fuck no.
