— Ace Just saw it in the comments. Dead at 77.
I am not going to pretend I care much about this guy. Which isn't the same as dancing on his grave. I'm just not going to overcompensate and pretend I'm praying for him or whatnot.
The only reason I'm mentioning this guy is because he occupied a seat I'd like to have.
And that seat is now open.
Murtha's death couldn't come at a worse time for Congressional Democrats.
Or, for that matter, for John Murtha, but I think that's obvious.
To Win the Seat... A Republican will probably have to express a greater interest in earmarks than we'd generally be comfortable with -- Murtha's little fiefdom basically ran on tax money siphoned off from the rest of the country.
This is one of those cases where we might have to bend to local politics on one issue to have a Representative who's with us on most other matters.
But, you know, that will be one guy arguing for earmarks for Allentown, and without Murtha's seniority and heft. (Correction: It's Johnstown, not Allentown.)

Going into the ICU after gallbladder surgery usually is a very bad sign, especially at his age.
He served his country as a Marine, which should never be forgotten. But I'm afraid that he served his country very badly as a congressman, however much bacon he brought home to his district. His corruption and his fiscal irresponsibility helped bring us to the catastrophe that we now face. The nation is better off with him no long a member of congress.
It is a shame, though, that it took his death to bring that about. Requiescat in pace, Marine.

Having said that, it irritates and puzzles me how somebody like Pelosi can parade her grandkids around Capitol Hill, and then deliberately pass legislation that will leave those same grandkids with huge amounts of debt and heartache - possibly even taking away their freedom. Speaking of families, how do you think the families of those Marines felt when Murtha was calling them cold blooded murderers?
Pelosi, Murtha and the rest of their ilk get no respect from me, and I don't think their "love" for their grandkids are the same as what I feel for mine. His dying doesn't stir up some deep seated respect from me.

Murtha was a crook and scumbag the day he died, the day before that, and the day before that. He never reformed. He never repented. He just spent decades enriching himself and his family in exchange for handouts of our money to favored constituents. When he was not bust actively undermining U.S. troops deployed overseas in combat zones. Fuck him.
And I am a bit of an agnostic on the whole "sympathies for the family" thing, since I suspect most of the family were cogs in his little corruption machine. I guess I am as sympathetic as I would be for any bunch of henchmen whose kingpin has gone on to his eternal reward. I wish them good luck with their job searches.

Just to be clear--I refuse to allow another redefinition of a word that suits the left's purposes. Calling idiots "idiots" over their chronically catastrophic policy choices is not "hate." I did not hate Congressman Murtha based on that conceptual framework--he was wrong about a great many things, but that does not constitute hatred. In fact, I rarely hate, but for a pimple on the ass of society such as yourself, erg, I make an exception.

Ehhh---let's not. How 'bout this instead:
Supposition #1:
We run somebody who doesn't do the earmark guarantee thing.
Supposition #1B
He/she loses.
Supposition #1C
Anti-earmark forces eventually regain control of Congress anyway (will happen, if nothing else because all parties rotate in and out of power)
Supposition #1D
Earmark's for that district come to an end, powerful message sent.
*OR*
Supposition #2
We run somebody who doesn't do the earmark guarantee thing.
#2B
He/she wins
#2C
Earmark's for that district come to an end, powerful message sent.
Basically, you need to know what's important, and what to lose for. Too many people have always thought that the most important thing was a majority for you party, and out of that all goodness would flow. I humbly submit that history since 1994 says otherwise.
Figure out the important priniciples, stand by them, lose with them if necessary, because as long as they are not too outside the envelope you also stand a good chance of eventually winning with them as well. Thus the key is being able to figure out what the envelope is, not what will get you a majority today.

This is what happens when you tie yourself to a long time incumbent.
Yes, you get the pork that brings but you also assure a long bust period after the Rep leaves office. They are an AWFUL lot of people waiting in line behind Murtha and they want the big slices he was getting and now they have the seniority. it's going to be VERY hard for any candidate to claim they can deliver much.

I'm always curious as to why people like Murtha who has the congressional health care package and medicare insist on still using the military facilities. I think those facilities should be used by those in the military and their dependents and of couse veterens if they need to use them and not when they have other coverage. He went to arlington hospital (va hosp center when he got worse). There is some poor navy doctor that f-ed up and will pay the price. Let's make sure we do this right. I think this quip of Churchill's would be applicable:
During a 1938 House of Commons debate about the defense budget around Munich-time, Churchill was demanding more air defense. Someone shouted out, "How much is enough?" The future prime minister replied that he was reminded of the man who received a telegram from Brazil informing him of the death of his mother-in-law and requesting instructions. "Embalm, cremate, bury at sea," the man wired back, "Take no chances."

These lame excuses for public servants will have a chance to reclaim their titles in 2010 & 2012 and on and on. They are incumbents to FOOLS and Crooks that will reelect them every time. Look where they are from. Those states are locked solid Blue Liberal Cesspools seeping with Union Corruption, Hyphenated entitled slave support and a downright retarded populace.
Liberals are moral relativists, and liberal politicians think they know better than their constituency what is good for them. This is not a general habit of conservatives. This is our government. And it's business as usual too. It all just makes me want to vomit.
Our founding fathers warned of unbridled power and went to some lengths to prevent it. Unfortunately they didnÂ’t go far enough. Term Limits for Congress and a return to the citizen legislature is our only hope. We must take our country back from those in Washington caught up on the drug of power and influence.
From 1776 to 1789, America was governed by the Articles of Confederation. The principal rotation in office rules were established to guard against the corruption of absolute power. These limits were designed to ensure against a permanent ruling class of legislators who might become unresponsive to their constituents, which apparently is what we have today. The provision limiting terms was proposed by John Dickenson as part of the Articles of Confederation and adopted October 14th, 1777.
In 1787, delegates met to draft a new Constitution. Most agreed some form of term limits established in the Articles of Confederation, and expected similar limits for the new document. Unfortunately the language limiting terms was deleted from the final draft.
The idea for limiting terms was raised again by Thomas Tucker of South Carolina in the First Congress limiting congressional terms to six years along with a companion bill limiting Senators to six years. Regrettably, Tucker was unable to get a House vote.
For the next century and a half, it wasnÂ’t much of an issue because members limited their own terms. It was customary to only serve no more than four years in the House, or six years in the Senate. Congress was viewed as a temporary assignment to serve the Country and then return to private life.
The same tradition held true for the Executive Branch started by George Washington refusing under great pressure to run for a third term. This tradition was broken by Franklin Roosevelt in 1940. Reform for this broken tradition was swift, while only two years after his death, Congress passed the 22nd amendment limiting the executive branch to two terms in office. It was ratified on March 1st, 1951.
Term limits is our only hope... and gallbladder operations. Barney Frank and Chris Dodd are also on my Fuck You list.

Funny you should mention that.
Just last night, I sent out this, in reply to an email that I received from a loved one.
"That's a great Email, except, there is no 28th Amendment to the US Constitution. And in reading the Constitution (I just finished, to be certain), those words are not found, anywhere in it. They should be, though!
Perhaps it's time for we, the people, to push for just such an amendment. While we're at it we could push for one on term limits for Congress and for abolishing a few of their special priveleges, such as their lifetime pension, for serving, at a minimum, 2 terms in office
.We should also push for limits on how often and for how long they meet in session. Do we really need for them to be in session so many days a year ( how many new laws do we actually NEED? Shouldn't their main focus be on the budget and on saving OUR money, it's not Theirs to do with as they wish!), secluded away from their constituents? Wouldn't it be better for them to have to spend at least half the year among their constituents, so that they know what WE actually want? We should also abolish the practice of "earmarks", make Lobbyists illegal, or at least seriously curb their actions. And maybe extend the "Truth in Advertising" law to them and their elections, to keep them from lying to us every election cycle!"

SaTx,
Proposal for Congressional term limits;
Twelve (12) total years eligibility to served in the U.S. Congress.
Three (3) two (2) year terms in the House of Representatives if re-elected, and one (1) six (6) year term in the Senate if elected.
Or two (2) - six (6) year terms in the senate if re-elected.
Once defeated as an incumbent in an election, members would not be eligible to hold any congressional office. They can move on to other elected offices (e.g. State offices, President, etc.) or return to the private sector.
If elected to the House for one term, and then run for the Senate, they would be eligible for one term in the Senate. They then would still be eligible to hold a seat in the House of Representative for two more terms if elected.
A Person may be appointed to complete a term of either House of congress, so long as the remainder of the term will not exceed the 12 year maximum allowed. Appointed time also counts towards eligibility. Under no circumstances will any person be allowed to serve more than twelve (12) years in the U.S. Congress.
Incumbent legislators are re-elected over 90% of the time. Be it name recognition, or people are caught up in their own lives and refuse to take notice to whatÂ’s important. Or it could we are ingrained with the idea our participation doesnÂ’t matter. Whatever the reason, today more than ever, the people need to stand up and engage their Government. Let their voices be heard to the ones representing us. When you hear an elected official brag about how long theyÂ’ve been in office, it should be a call to action to send them home. We need to limit the terms of career politicians, and return to a citizen legislature and a true representative government. This issue has been argued many times before, but I believe the people are ready for a call to action and limiting the terms of those that are destroying our Country.

MDr VB1.0 CS1st,
If we look carefully at our federal government we will see that our problems include not only corrupt politicians (over which we are alleged to have some control - QED), but also the shadow government that actually controls our country (over which we may have only legislative control) including the likes of George Soros who has committed that he will bring down the United States, and the huge bulk of the federal government.
It is my perception that we will solve these problems only by 1) recycling every elected official every election cycle, 2) restoring state's rights and control over the federal government, 3) using sundown clauses to reduce the number of laws we have controlling us now (freedom is the absence of legislation), 4) requiring state control, including compensation and budgets, of all senators and congressmen, 5) restricting federal elections to citizens who are 35 years of age, are taxpayers, and who pass a qualification exam, 6) make it a federal crime to perform any act that contributes to election fraud or to any act which is outside the constraints imposed by the Constitution for the United States *(http://www.scribd.com/doc/23978769/Constitution-for-the-United-States), 7) removing the individual income tax from the United States (rescind the 16th Amendment which is probably not legal anyway),
There are more immediate actions we can and should take, I'm certain, but this is a start.
* had a busy day. .too lazy to provide insty-link. Forgive me.

A I also said, we need to do away with the Pension for members of Congress. just abolish it. Why should they receive compensation, from us, just because they served 2 terms? And the money we spend on them, for their Gov't Health care, do away with it!
I'm ambivalent about the Pension for former Presidents. It can be a good thing, but, really, is it necessary? Don't most of them have plenty of money socked away, after 4-8 years of living rent free and receiving meals at our expense. Aren't most of them considered to be millionaires and can receive extravagant fees for speaking engagement, or for their work at think tanks?
Why do we continue to spend our tax dollars to support these people, most of whom have much more money than the average US citizen will ever dream of having?
Want to balance our budget? Get the retired congressmen and women, and former presidents off of our payroll, for starters!

Now he's dead. That truly makes me sad. I am sad that we wasn't kicked to the curb by his constituents. I'm said the Marines who were exonerated didn't have the chance to sue his for every filthy dime to his name. I'm sad he wasn't tried for treason, found guilty and hanged.
Thoughts & prayers.

Just one more comment 'fire six - Down periscope' mmkay?
I want their heads on a plate.
First, all elections need to be done using paper ballot. The electronic machines allow for the candidate with deeper pockets to win every time.
Second, since the first suggestion above of course will not happen, I say it is time to collect the heads of all members of Congress and their extended corrupt networks who have clear violations of law or ethics as relates to common law and business practice. No exceptions allowed. They must be exterminated along with their corrupt networks to stem the problematic injustices they wallow in.
To say the least, I am sick of being victimized by those whom we elect to serve us. I am sick of seeing their scandals played out nightly on various media outlets with no real actions to end their corruptions against the people of this nation.
WE THE PEOPLE OF THIS REPUBLIC:
Are on the verge of a new revolution.
Will do what is necessary to bring equality under the laws of this country back into perspective.
Want the ending to come about of the absolute most corrupt and intertwined agencies of the Federal Reserve, the IRS/Treasury Dept.'s, FDA, SEC, FINRA, and every other federal agency not given the authority to even exist under the supreme law of The Constitution of the United States of America. Most people don't even know that the laws as implemented in the US Code are actually legal and implemented by bureaucratic agencies that have no authority to do so. Read the laws and try to decipher them if you can. They are full of deceptive variants of the words most would never think have a meaning differing than what they hold in those laws. Like the phrase "trade or business" as defined in the US Code means- the performance or functions of a public office. Nothing about private persons and the work they do to earn a living.
Done.

Simple. Connections.
My dad was in the Air Force during the Korean War...he was what he referred to as a "titless WAF", and worked in the Finance section. As he told it, the promotions and awards came through Finance before going on the the squadrons. The major he worked for was great for giving the people in her section first choice. Kinda bullshit, if you ask me, but that's the way it was back then.
FWIW, Daddy went from E-1 to E-7 about three times in the eight years he was in. (He liked to have a good time; what can I say?)

You heard wrong. In the last few years of the war in Viet Nam, the Marine Corps was accepting draftees, about 20,000 of them, most of whom had such a bad attitude that they weren't worth a shit. A lot of good Marines got killed because of the carelessness and the ambivalence of those assholes.

Not the history I read, back in 2004 when folks were digging deep for the real truth. Kerry was drafted, then cut a deal.
Kerry later volunteered for swift boat duty. Let the record show, this was when these were all done, safely offshore Nam, and not up the Delta.
The record also shows, Kerry was honorably discharged. Problem - the "record" is dated two years after he was "discharged", and coincidently falls after Carter granted an amnesty.

I know that Murtha is in the 9th Circle of Hell, but which round, 2 or 3?
Condemned to the very center of hell for committing the ultimate sin (personal treachery against God) is Satan(Lucifer), who has three faces, one red, one black, and one a pale yellow, each having a mouth that chews on a prominent traitor. Satan himself is represented as a giant, terrifying beast, weeping tears from his six eyes, which mix with the traitors' blood sickeningly.

When (and if, of course) we finally give Osama bin Laden a Hellfire suppository, am I authorized to be happy at that event? Just wonderin'.
Seriously folks, this whole "Let's not sink to the level of our enemies." thing is getting old. If someone is evil (or even just plain bad) then it is entirely reasonable to be glad at their demise. Not glad that they suffered, nor at the unhappiness their loss causes their loved-ones -- just glad that their important part no longer inhabits this plane of existence.
If we're trying to maintain a superior demeanor in order to influence the "squishy-middlers" to like us better than the left, then I quite frankly count this as a waste of time. Any who remain squishy at this point in history are too damned dim or dithersome to worry about.
Or are we perhaps trying to moderate our positions so that some who are solidly in the enemy camp will actually come to see the error in their ways and come-over to our side? If so, when will those of us on the right finally realize that this is impossible!. Among others who tried this strategy, both Bushes, many R Senators, and even the hallowed Ronnie have made this mistake -- all it got them is derision, disrespect, and a hearty rogering from the left.
And finally, puhlease do not contend that we do not have either the right, or ability to assess folks as either "evil", "bad", or even naughty. Judgements such as these are both the right and the responsibility of free men and women. Without constantly making such judgements, we cannot attemot to live with any sort of moral compass in the real world.
Just my 2-cents.

In my opinion, it is the loss of personal responsibility/integrity that is tearing us apart. Handle your business. And ‘your’ includes you and yours… meaning your family. It is not the government’s job to take care of you. And most parents (should be ALL) are responsible enough to have a plan in place so as not to be a burden to their children.
Secondly… the entitlement programs are ridiculous. Lord Tytler said it best when speaking of the fall of the Athenian Republic: “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship.”
Maybe our time is up.

During Vietnam, the Navy and Air Force never took draftees. The Army and Marines took them, but the Marines started taking draftees later in the war. Yep, once drafted, there were no choices. The only way to get a choice of branch was to enlist. One young college graduate I knew volunteered to be drafted and was sent to Germany for two years!!!!. A draftee was in for two years, enlistment was usually four.

Feb 7, 1971, so I've got you by a few. Holy shit, it's been forty years. I served with the last of the Vietnam era draftees, most of whom were honorable men who did their jobs like most of the rest of us. The ones who would not were poison, and would better have been sent to Leavenworth to rot.
Unlike Murtha, I know the meaning of Semper Fi, so I'm not airing dirty laundry in public.
