Thanks to rdbrewer.

Related: Confidence in MFM remains near record lows.

mericans continue to express near-record-low confidence in newspapers and television news -- with no more than 25% of Americans saying they have a "great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in either. These views have hardly budged since falling more than 10 percentage points from 2003-2007.

...

Americans' confidence in newspapers and television news is on par with Americans' lackluster confidence in banks and slightly better than their dismal rating of Health Management Organizations and big business.

Well, that's certainly good company to be in.

For purposes of comparison, the media finished just slightly ahead of gout.

A good example is HotAir and the way a CNN poll on "gay marriage"  has been misused in various posts over the last few days despite having a margin of error of between 3 and 8%. They even go on too impeach a poll showing something different using the CNN poll. Now that's chutzpa. No one expects blogs to be unbiased  but at a certain point you have gone beyond bias.

Media reporting that Hussein Obama is walking back his laudatory comments about construction of the mosque in Manhattan.  The White House phones must be burning up, and Gibbs will voluntarily take it up the squeakhole for O'Hope & Change on Monday.

46 I posted this on the VJ day thread right before it died.

From Politco:

Speaking to reporters today, President Obama drew a sharp line under his comments last night, insisting that his defense of the right to build a mosque does not mean he supports the project.

"I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there. I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding," he said.

Obama's new stance is logically consistent with his words last night, if a bit less "clarion," as Mike Bloomberg called the first remarks. And there are certainly two possible stances here: Bloomberg's, that the Cordoba project itself represents the best of America; and Obama's, that the freedom of religion is an important American value.

Obama's new remarks, literally speaking, re-open the question of which side he's on. Most of the mosque's foes recognize the legal right to build, and have asked the builders to reconsider.

54 I think the wording on the "confidence" question is too strange to be worth much of anything.  Gallup has it as,

"Now I am going to read you a list of institutions in American society. Please tell me how much confidence you, yourself, have in each one -- a great deal, quite a lot, some, or
very little? First, ... Next, [RANDOM ORDER]"

Don't they know that confidence doesn't just exist as some singular island?  Confidence doesn't exist without some direction, some prediction, as Gallup should know.  Maybe someone is confident that the MFM will screw America over?  Maybe another lacks confidence that the MFM is skilled enough to screw America over?

They go to the lengths of including a redundant, "yourself", and randomly ordering the list, but they can't properly phrase the core of the question.

Of course it does.  I was just disappointed that The Precedent didn't give us a little arabic, or Bahasa, in his lunatic rantings.  That would have been cool.

And I am extremely saddened that he didn't explain how the muslim call to prayer is one of the prettiest sounds on Earth and that all of New York should thank him for making sure that that call to muslim prayer is heard 5 times a day, every single day, at Ground Zero.  It's a question of ambiance, you see ...

65 Media reporting that Hussein Obama is walking back his laudatory comments about construction of the mosque in Manhattan. The White House phones must be burning up, and Gibbs will voluntarily take it up the squeakhole for O'Hope & Change on Monday. Heh. And I just heard, an hour ago, Ed "Poppin Dhimmi" Morrissey on his radio show, lecturing us about how the mosque is perfectly legal and while we can protest, it conservatives must not try to stop it. 'Cause, you know, we're all for private property rights. Just like Barry and Mayor Bloomberg, Real consistent champions of private property, they is. What a motard Eddie has become. This isn't about conservatives and property rights, it's about Barry and the dhimmi New Yorkers caving in to Islam and political correctness. Stop and consider... If the Mayor or members of the Manhattan city council had wanted to stop this, they could have done so with less effort than taking a dump. Given the mountains of permits and regulations one must meet in Manhattan to just open a fucking dry cleaners, much less erect an entire building, this mosque could have been bottled up for years in the bureaucracy. But instead Ed wants to scold conservatives for suggesting ways to stop it. Perhaps Ed wants to join the White House Press Corpsemen, or get invited to Barry's cocktail parties.

70 I half-assedly predicted that Obama would puss out just like he did with Gitmo, KSM, etc., but I certainly didn't expect it to happen today.
Gotta love how POLITICO has to frame it in the one precise context in which Obama is being logical. Can't have people thinking that Obama has yet again fucked up on something so fundamental.  I'm dying for the polls to come out, I really hope that the news of his recanting his pro-mosque position stays obscured long enough that the Dems have to squirm for a few days.

But instead Ed wants to scold conservatives for suggesting ways to stop it.

But instead Ed wants to scold conservatives for suggesting ways to stop it.

Ed Morrissey need not waste time scolding conservatives for their timely suggestions.  He should be more concerned with the mounting anger and drive to stop the build by the New York hard hat community.

They are a force to be reckoned with, and if the trades decide not to work the project, the interlopers who attempt to enter the site may find themselves visiting with Luigi, Tony, and a few other special friends.

Then a couple of weeks later they published an attack on the judge in the case under this ridiculous anonymous monike,r "capital confidential." The only thing BG was keeping confidential was that it was a defense press release. I'm truly disappointed in you, Breitbart.

Everyone of those 19 evil bastards on board the planes that day were muslims. Everyone that helped them plan it and finance it were muslims. Everyone that knew about the plan, could have exposed it and chose not to, were muslims.

And yet some people think that building a fucking mosque next to ground zero isn't a big deal?

77

Obama's new remarks, literally speaking, re-open the question of which side he's on. Most of the mosque's foes recognize the legal right to build, and have asked the builders to reconsider.

Look, you wingnuts can't expect the President to make himself aware of the issues on both sides of every little news item as obscure as this.  With a small staff of only a few hundred, the best he can do is pick the side opposite to that most Americans pick first, because his audience usually wants to hear that, and then gradually refine his position over the next days and weeks into something that can be made to appear to be supporting either side you want.  That's how he shows he's the leader of all of us.

Posted by: sherlock at August 14, 2010 11:57 AM (thr9V)

78 Obama's just saying what he thinks people want to hear.  Of course he's all for the mosque at the Ramadan dinner. Away from it, he's not so sure.  The only way he's a Muslim is if he gets to be Allah.
