— Ace I can't believe they killed Winona. (Sorry, this is an in-joke: I think Dave in Texas started this long ago, saying "I can't believe they killed Winona" after every episode of Justified. It's not a spoiler. It's a joke-spoiler.)
Eh, figure a lot of you watch the show and I did this post so I'll link it.
One Embarrassing Thing: Though I like the show a lot, I used to make fun of it -- in a loving way -- because Raylan was clearly baiting people into shootouts, so he could kill them and make the paperwork all look good. I used to joke (again, in a loving way) that Raylan seriously needed some retraining in the use of deadly force.
To wit, cops pull out their guns and begin shouting and acting very aggressively and frighteningly precisely in order to reduce the risk of a shooting occurring. The show of force is intended to forestall the use of force.
Raylan goes about this the exact opposite way. He moseys up, gun in holster, and engages in patter with you, often philosophizin' 'n such about what it takes to pull a gun and kill a man, often throwin' in some casual banter about maybe killin' you and throwin' out some deadpan snarky insults to your honor and your manhood.
This often has the effect of making his provoking his opponent to pull on Raylan, which, given that Raylan's an advanced practitioner of the quick draw, he really shouldn't.
At any rate, I like that Raylan does that; it's interesting. Murder frequently is. But I did joke about it as if the Show Itself weren't aware of this very serious problem in Raylan's use of deadly force.
Last night's episode made it pretty clear the show is aware what Raylan is doing is bad policework at the best and akin to murder at the worst.
So I withdraw that snark.
On the other hand, Raylan's not killing enough people anymore. The first season they had him kill a bunch, I guess to establish the character and to draw eyeballs. Since then, they've tried to be more realistic about how much killin' a lawman can do without being kicked off the force.
Seriously, Raylan barely kills anyone anymore. They seem to "conserve" all of Raylan's killin' for the season finale, but then he don't barely kill no one in the finale, ether!
I'll take a little less realism if it means we can have some more killin' again.
Moar Murder, please.

CARSON: Indeed so, milord. [Prepares to exit.]
LORD GRANTHAM: One moment, Carson. You mentioned the First World War. I trust you did not mean to imply that a second may be on the way?

It's generally considered a good idea to not give a collection of hooligans such as this any indication of what buttons you don't like pushed. Allow me to share an anecdote:
We got a nugget (new flier) into our squadron and during one of our meet-n-greet sessions, we got to talking about stupid shit our wives/girlfriends have made us do. He (we'll call him "Monroe" for now) shared that his wife made him watch Brokeback Mountain, and that he didn't think it was that bad of a movie.
I, being totally sympathetic to his plight had my nugget find a picture of Heath Ledger in overalls and tape it to Monroe's flight helmet. When Monroe got back to the shop, I was promptly stuffed into a trashcan and rolled down the flightline.
We gave him crap for a few days and were about to let it go (because who hasn't had to endure something otherwise awful to enjoy female company) when he decided to share a little more. He told us that it really bothered him that we made fun of the fact that he didn't hate Brokeback Mountain.
Again, in my sympathy, I gave my nugget a task. I had him bring all of Monroe's flight gear up to the PR shop and had them stitch "Brokeback" anywhere a call-sign would be appropriate. I took one hell of a beating, but we all laughed about it for days.
To this day, it's still his call sign.

"Last night's episode made it pretty clear the show is aware what Raylan is doing is bad policework at the best and akin to murder at the worst"
That's part of what makes Raylan such a good character. He's a decent man, but he also has a lot of his murderous father in him (who he hated). The show is basically a Western, with Raylan as an anti-hero killer.
In his defense, everybody he's killed completely deserved it.

Meh. The Dancing with the Stars thing really doesn't bother me. I'm not a fan of any reality shows because they irritate me, but I do like to watch some of the finale shows of things like DWTS because it's nice to see how talented some of these novices become. Same with American Idol and the like.

Ace wrote, "Last night's episode made it pretty clear the show is aware what Raylan is doing is bad policework at the best and akin to murder at the worst.
So I withdraw that snark."
I disagree. Arranging the assassination of Nicky Augustine, a murderous mafioso who's promised to kill his family, seems to me like a perfectly ethical thing to do. Bad policework? Without doubt. 'Akin to murder'? Not at all. Protecting one's family from murderous thugs is an ultimately moral act. Besides, Raylan was suspended at the time. He wasn't carrying a badge; hence, he wasn't acting in any official capacity.
And provoking bad guys into drawing on him so he can legally shoot them? I don't have any ethical problems with that, either. In every instance, the men (and one woman) Raylan has shot throughout the course of the series have been evil, despicable people--most of whom, by the way, had the choice of surrender, which is a choice he has given all of those with whom he's had a chance to interact. At the very least, Raylan's given them all a fighting chance.
Look up FBI Agent Jelly Bryce, who had one of the fastest draws ever recorded (clocked by Life magazine at 4/10ths of a second) and who was one of the most proficient killers of men who has ever lived. Hoover's Bureau used Bryce as a specialist in stand-off situations. In most instances, Bryce would approach the door alone and engage the bad guy in a straightforward negotiation: surrender or die. 21 men went for their guns and died doing it. He was freakishly fast and unerringly accurate. Bryce never missed, not ever, not once. Was what Bryce doing 'akin to murder'? I would argue no, of course not. Same thing here.

Teh wimmiz seem to like him as Raylen. Art Mullen, Nick Searcy's character, plays his boss and he's always on Raylen about having sex with every good looking woman that crosses his path.
Example:
Raylen had sex with a potential federal witness but Art doesn't know it yet. He reminds Raylen that there can't be ANY hint of shenanigans with testimony from him or her given to the DA or the case falls apart.
"Just tell me you haven't slept with her yet, Raylen."

Isn't Wynona the young lady with the Big Brown Beaver from Primus's song of the same name?
"Wynona's got herself a big brown beaver
And she shows it off to all her friends.
One day, you know, that beaver tried to leave her,
So she caged him up with cyclone fence.
Along came Lou with the old baboon
And said Recognize that smell?
Smells like seven layers,
That beaver eats Taco Bell.
Now Rex he was a Texan out of New Orleans
And he travelled with the carnival shows.
He ran bumper cars, sucked cheap cigars
And he candied up his nose.
He got wind of the big brown beaver
So he though he'd take himself a peek,
But the beaver was quick and he grabbed him by the kiwis
Now he ain't pissed for a week.
(And a half!)
Now Wynona took her big brown beaver,
And she stuck him up in the air.
Said I sure do love this big brown beaver
And I wish I did have a pair.
Now the beaver once slept for seven days
And it gave us all an awful fright.
So I tickled his chin and I gave him a pinch
And the bastard tried to bite me.
Wynona loved her big brown beaver
And she stroked him all the time.
She pricked her finger one day and it occurred to her
She might have a porcupine."
Does this clear things up?

Not quite true. Bryce was a competition shooter (and college student at the time) who was appointed to a police position after the Oklahoma City police chief, who needed another man to meet team requirements for a shooting match, saw Bryce nail each of the spades on a 4 of Spades playing card at 10 yards. A few days after becoming a police officer, Bryce shot dead two car thieves who went for guns when he approached.
On Hoover's orders, Bryce later did exhibition shooting as an FBI Agent as a kind of public relations gig. He hated doing it, felt it kept him away from doing real law enforcement work.

Speaking of "Girls", I recently saw that movie "This Is 40" and that fat tub of talentless goo, Lena Dunham, had a bit part in it.

<<<Not quitetrue. Bryce was a competition shooter (and college student at the time) who was appointed to a police position after the Oklahoma City police chief, who needed another man to meet team requirements for a shooting match, saw Bryce nail each of the spades on a 4 of Spades playing card at 10 yards. A few days after becoming a police officer, Bryce shot dead two car thieves who went for guns when he approached>>>
So he was an exhibition shooter.
Also, he killed a single car thief who went for a gun, and was arrested for murder, as he had not been even issued a badge yet.
The two he killed after that were burglars he caught trying to break open a door.

You're nitpicking. He wasn't an exhibition shooter before going into law enforcement. He was an amazingly good shot with one-in-a-million natural skills who got noticed for it by the right man at the right place at the right time.
Thanks for correcting me on the bad guys he shot at the beginning of his police career. Bryce's biography's around here somewhere but I was too lazy to look it up.

I don't care what Bob Munden's time was. Munden was not a cop, not a soldier, not a man who stood against another man in a life-or-death situation. He was a showman. Nothing wrong with that, but there's a big difference between blowing away paper and blowing away armed opponents. Munden himself would probably agree to the distinction. Why you don't is beyond me.

Man. Y'all suck. Here I was sure that the HQ was the one place I could come to actually talk about the Justified finale, and y'all are whinging like little girls about spoilers.
This was a masterful piece of writing. The more I have thought about it the better it is. The whole season it seemed Boyd was getting dirtier and dirtier and less likeable, but that ending just made you want to give him a big ole hug and say "it's OK." He survived all the killing and outsmarted everyone (except Limehouse, and there's another hook for next season), but he couldn't save Ava from her one big mistake.
And I thought they would finish the Drew Thompson story, but they didn't. I'm glad, it gives them a hook for next season so they are not going to start all over again with a new set of villains. I still want to know how Arlo got started and why he was covering for Drew all those years. I want to know why Theo Tonin still wants Drew dead. Maybe Sammy doesn't care now, but I think he does.
As a Kentucky native, I just adore this show and hope it goes on and on. I've been reading the Raylan Givens novels off and on, and the show really does a great job with the characters and with Kentucky.

Because you're talking about character and I'm talking about skill with pistols. Bryce practiced with trick shots and fast-draw since he was a kid, just like Munden. How do you know Munden would not have been able to shoot a man? How did Bryce know that he would be able to, up until the moment he had to?
Repetition. I doubt Bryce gave any thought to it before he shot his first man. His hand flashed down there and did its thing.

Munen muso: no mind. If you thinking about it, you're dead. And you're probably right about Munden. Too bad he died recently. If asked about it, I wonder what his answer would be.
I've been getting into point shooting a lot lately. I've learned that it's hard to be good at point shooting. I've also learned it's a good thing I bought a whole bunch of handgun ammo before the panic started. It takes a lot of practice.

There was a pretty decent body count last night. Raylan and Winona taking care of business with the two thugs who broke in and were threatening her.. whoa! didn't see THAT coming (Winona I mean). Then Raylans murder by proxy of that dickhead from Chicago. Got his own men to fill him full of holes. Pretty slick Raylan, pretty slick.
Wished all season for Andrea to get it.. thank you Lord for answering my prayer. Carl is gonna be trouble for Rick next season and maybe throughout the rest of the series. Could easily see Carl getting killed off.

Seriously. Every single time he appears on screen, I just want the earth to swallow him up, or Ragnar's Shield-Maiden-Bad-Ass-Rapist-Stabbing wife to fucking explode his face with a blacksmith hammer.
The wife is quite a warrior, no?

And even if the bodycount is sparse, the poetry compensates. A ballistic duet with your pregnant wife in the nursery? Priceless.
PS If you haven't seen the finale then maybe you don't read articles about the show. Just a thought to everyone screaming "spoiler!"
