Koran Burning Still On, Maybe
— Gabriel Malor

Pastor Jones continues to hold his Korans hostage:

Speaking to NBC's "Today" show, the Rev. Terry Jones said if he meets with the imam in New York, he won't burn the Quran. It wasn't clear if he meant the burning would be halted indefinitely or just for Saturday.

Imam Muhammad Musri, the president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, told CBS' "The Early Show" he had a commitment for Jones and himself to meet in New York with the imam there.

Sources say he's also demanded that Discovery Channel "stop glorifying human filthy birthing." Since this is clearly a winning strategy, I'm going to hold a Koran-burning unless FOX brings back Firefly.

Oh, and to the folks who think Jones is some kind of super-genius, just punking the whole world...um, no:

Jones said Thursday he would call off the planned burning of Qurans based on a deal negotiated with Musri that the location of a mosque planned near ground zero in New York would be changed.

But Musri said he was clear on Thursday when he told Jones that he could only set up a meeting with planners of the New York City mosque. Jones responded by suggesting that he would go forward with his plan on Saturday after all.

"We are just really shocked," Jones said of Musri. "He clearly, clearly lied to us."

Musri, an imam in Florida, was never in a position to change the location of the ground zero mosque. It'd be like my priest agreeing to move a cathedral in New York. Does not compute, unless you're a lunatic.

Hopefully there's just one more day of this drama, but I doubt it. Look how successful it's been so far.

In Afghanistan, at least 11 people were injured Friday in protests.

Police in the northern province of Badakhshan said several hundred demonstrators ran toward a NATO compound where four attackers and five police were injured in clashes. Protesters also burned an American flag at a mosque after Friday prayers. In western Farah province, police said two people were injured in another protest.

Ugh.

Nut or not, this pastor has shown that tolerance only seems to go in one direction.  Imagine if all the Christians came together and said you had better not build that mosque on ground zero or we will start blowing things up and killing people. Do you think the President would say to the imam, please reconsider your decision, it's will get people killed???
I think the fact that the government even got involved says a lot and should scare the hell out of Americans who love this Country and the Constitution.

As for me, I think I'll burn the koran and blow the smoke towards mecca, just because I can.

I like how the Imam Rauf character is threatening us now. He's insisting that if we move the Ground Zero victory mosque away from Ground Zero - the muslim world will react with violence, so he cannot possibly move it now.

Threats?  Oh yes.  threats.

Oh, those poor korans.

Burn the fuckers! Because they are annoying me.

This is such a silly issue. You have a constitutional right to burn them. You can burn a flag, a bible, or a koran. Just spark the suckers and grill a chedderwurst and be done with it.

The fact that muslims will blow shit up is irrelevant and not a good reason not to do anything, no matter how trivial.

Else what is the precedent? "Get out of Iraq or we'll blow shit up"? You can't let their explosive tendencies dictate your actions to you.

This is such a fabricated concern that no one will give a shit about or remember in 2 years (or less). It's just some bullshit for dweebs to flip out over.

Fuck it. I'm about ready to roll a koran and smoke it. I wonder if Koran gets you high. Maybe it will make me psychotic and I'll go blow up a shopping mall.

22 Burning the Holy Qur'an is wrong and building the mosque a few blocks from Ground Zero is absolutely right. Have the rest of my conservative friends forgotten a little something called freedom of religion? So what if they behead a couple of people here and there in the name of their freedom of religion. It's no worse than the smallpox blankets our Founding Fathers gave to the Indians. That's what freedom of religion means. Otherwise we become just like these other countries where they don't let people practice their faiths. And for those fellow conservatives of mine who are suddenly concerned about the rights of Muslim women, I will just say this. You are infringing on these women's freedom of religion if you try to stop them from assuming what they believe to be their rightful place. Maybe they enjoy being covered head to toe? Would you want someone else to tell your wife how to dress?

He's insisting that if we move the Ground Zero victory mosque away from Ground Zero - the muslim world will react with violence, so he cannot possibly move it now.

Kind of like how they'll react with violence if they burn those innocent korans?

Kind of like how they'll react with violence if we don't bug out of Afghanistan?

Kind of like how they'll react with violence if their goat doesn't put out?

How they will react should be a non-concern. Not even worth briefly considering.

Posted by: phoenixgirl at September 10, 2010 05:55 AM (JeQ5T)

25

It's disturbing and telling that so many followers of a religion would turn violent over destruction of one of their religious objects. These aren't just the radical terrorist, these are the rank and file Muslims going crazy.

It's also very disturbing that our own government and chattering class are so afraid of them. Obama looked like he was going to get on his knees and beg this nut in Florida not to burn a book. Our leaders are scared to death that Muslims are going to hurt someone over this. That tells me all I need to know about our leaders and the Muslims.

Filthy, barbaric, heathen idolaters.  I've grown weary of their duplicity, their savagery and their hostility.  It's past time to show them why the Germans and Japanese are such pleasant world citizens these days.

As for here in the states, well this little exercise has drawn another defining line between the progressives/relativists and the Americans.  It's always good to see who stands with you or against you.

Pastor Jones and his 50 followers have shown the world that islam & the left have common cause and that both are wearing the emperor's new clothes (none).

Islam is not and has never been about peace, and the left only cares about burning korans when they can roast americans on the fire.  The left has been burning our flag for years, stomping on it, spitting on it, and acts like being able to do so is the 11th commandment.

I got the impression for the TV report last night that the Imam in Florida was on the phone with the Imam in NY in the presense of Jones.

I like Jones' style. We ought to start a new foundation "Destroy Mecca Foundation" that will work towards destroying Mecca unless our demands are met:

1) Muslims are to round up everyone in Al Quaeda, Hamas and Hezzebulluh and kill them

2) Move the GZ mosque to different location, especially that one couldn't here the Muslim call to prayer from the GZ location.

3) Transplant all Palestinians to other Arab countries.

70 I remember a few years back some college kid in Florida pilfered the Eucharist from a Catholic Church. (Went up to take communion, already a big no-no if not Catholic, and then proceeded to take it home with him, an even bigger no-no.) The Catholics asked him nicely if he would please give it back and he refused, claiming he was being "persecuted." Then some atheists started a campaign to steal the Eucharist and desecrate it on YouTube. I don't seem to remember much concern in the press about the delicate feelings of Catholics over the desecration of our sacred objects...I guess because we didn't use violence or threaten to blow anyone up. In fact most of the comments that were made were borderline anti-Catholic..."how crazy are they for making a fuss over a piece of bread?" and the like.

Now I think this pastor is a nut and the whole Koran burning is a ridiculous publicity stunt. But if he's done one thing he's made it bleeding obvious that there is a double standard in this country as far as the treatment of Islam and the treatment of other religions.

Oh, and Obama is a hypocrite. I know I'm never going to see him crying over the vandalism of a Virgin Mary statue or the burning of a church. Enough with the "this doesn't represent American values" b/s. Last time I checked the right to free expression was still an American value.

People don't like to be shamed, and those who oppose the proposed bipartisan cultural center in lower Manhattan may see their reflection in this intolerant Koran-burning pastor. The Democrats may gain a super-majority if they hold that mirror up just right. Freedom of religion is important to conservatives like myself. I would hate to think that my vote was in line with those who support intolerance. Regretfully, I will spend November 2 in church rather than in an election booth.

They're already "protesting" and throwing fits over... what exactly?  Nothing was burned!  The mere *thought* that someone *might* do something offensive to them hurt their delicate "sensibilities" so much that they just couldn't bear the strain and had to get it out of their system and start rioting.  Lunatics.

But as a Christian, I am called upon to watch my tongue, and not hurt others merely because I have the right to do so. I would like the Republicans to succeed this fall as much as you do. But my "concern", as you put it, is that the Democrats gain have the upper hand on the cultural center issue. I understand that there is a rally on October 2, and if all the participants march with signs with the face of the moderate Mr. Rauf it may create a sympathetic electoral wave in favor of his many supporters in the Democratic party.

I may get the crap kicked out of me for saying this, but the longer this drama goes on, the more I tend to support anyone who chooses to do it, and there are now numerous individuals threatening to do so.

The reason that Christians, such as myself, do not go on rampages when someone burns our Holy book is because, well, 1. We're not driven by our religion to insanity and 2. Because we know that our God's word is a living word. It's is conveyed through text, but the word itself can never be destroyed. As long as their are human souls with the capacity to share the message in some manner, his words will remain alive.

Sure, the folks looking to burn the Koran all appear a bit nutty, but again, and I I repeat my statement from a few days ago: Those who would seek to kill over this incident would seek to kill.... period. Some here have argued that there are those who are "marginal" and might be pushed over the edge. Well, isn't being marginally radical a kind of like being a little bit pregnant?

Muslims fail to see the irony that these men have the right to burn the Koran. Does that make it a reasonable thing to do: No, of course not. Then again. where the hell were our brothers and sisters of Muslim faith when the Bible was being burned?

The fact that everyone including Gates and the President have weighed in on this has made this a much more public and valid spectacle than it otherwise would have been.

Perhaps it is a conversation that needs to take place.

Police in the northern province of Badakhshan said several hundred demonstrators ran toward a NATO compound where four attackers and five police were injured in clashes. Protesters also burned an American flag at a mosque after Friday prayers. In western Farah province, police said two people were injured in another protest.

Remember, that this is the response of a peaceful religion (snork) over the mere THREAT of burning the Qurans. None have actually been burned yet, and they are already out beating people up and setting things on fire. Boy, gimme some o' dat peace over here, bruddahman... {/sarc}

And the burning of the American flag? Does that mean we get to torch a mosque in protest? Or are we expected to just suck it up in response (as usual)? {/rhetorical question}

111 polynikes, I understand what the "snapshot" polls say. However, the Democrats are making rapid progress humanizing the issue with Mr. Rauf. And they might doubly-humanize it by not only carrying large Rauf signs at the rally, but by having top Democratic officeholders attend the rally wearing Rauf masks. Can you image the TV ad they could make of that? At the end, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Charles Rangel could simultaneously remove their masks and say "We are America." That unifying message might well unify voters and cause a Democratic Tsunami come election day.

And it also occurred to me that since the Democrats are planning to harness the "star power" and popularity of Mrs. Obama in the midterms, she might join in the fun as well. They could ever have her do the whole Rauf-mask ad alone -- will a veil first being revealed before the President himself lifts it to uncover his wife's Maxim-100-award winning face. 120 The thing that makes me crazy is the whole "we can't judge Islam by the actions of a few terrorists" (9-11, etc., etc.), but it's totally acceptable - expected even - for the whole Muslim world to react with hostility towards the entire U.S. in response to the actions of one person. I understand they run the minutia of their daily lives in accordance with the Koran - hell, in Muslim countries their laws are based on it, aren't they? - so burning it is unimaginable to them. Which makes Islam pretty much incompatible with the West. We cherish many freedoms here (or we used to) which seem to be prohibited by the very nature of their faith. When my coworkers make comments on how awful Rev. Jones is, I just say "Sure it's disrespectful, but he has the right to do it. And why have the media blown this up to such idiotic proportions anyway?" They get this sullen look on their faces, but they do shut up.

Though I wouldn't burn someone's scripture, given the over-extension federal powers abusing to eliminate our Constitution, at this point, burning the Quran symbolizes a protest against Obama's administration as it does a protest against Jihad terrorist murderers who have yet to pay for their crimes against our nation, killing 3000 Americans and destroying the World Trade Center, permanently injuring all the responders and clean up crews, bombing the Pentagon, and annihilating those in flight over Pennsylvania. Add to that, there needs to be an effective means for Americans to protest the violent Muslim protests that determine the deaths of Christians. That is nothing new, hearing Muslims shout "Death to Christians" now as ever.

Still, I agree with Mark Steyn's account that had New York City already rebuilt the World Trade Center, the animus against the gz mosque would not have such intensity. As far as burning the Quran, because of all the federal authoritarianism smothering the natural expression, I wonder what more effective form of protest Americans can do against what happened on 9/11/01. Draw Muhammad Posters and wear the hijab in public protest? (In self defense, claim that Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.) Impersonate a Jihadist beating his wife and children, and killing Christians and Jews in a public skit or sidewalk puppet show? Burn the "Islam" flag (if "Islam" has a banner). Burn Jihadist effigies? Have a 9/11 Fiesta and crack open Jihadist piñatas.

June 18, 2007 "Christians in Gaza Fear for their Lives" (AP)
After defeating their rivals in Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, Muslim extremists are focusing their attacks on Christians in Gaza City. Christians in Gaza City have issued an appeal to the international community and a plea for protection against the increased attacks by Muslim extremists. Father Manuel Musallem, head of Gaza's Latin church, told the AP that Muslims have ransacked, burned and looted a school and convent that are part of the Gaza Strip's small Romany Catholic community. He told the AP that crosses were broken, damage was done to a statue of Jesus, and at the Rosary Sister School and nearby convent, prayer books were burned. Gunmen used the roof of the school during the fighting, and the convent was "desecrated," Mussalem told the AP. "Nothing happens by mistake these days," he said. Father Musalam additionally told The Jerusalem Post that the Muslim gunmen used rocket-propeled grenades (RPGs) to blow through the doors of the church and school, before burning Bibles and destroying every cross they could get their hands on.

124 We CAN judge Islam by their Jihadists AS WELL AS the lame "moderate Muslim" prevention of terrorism, the Muslim unwillingness to turn over terrorists to the FBI BEFOREHAND or afterwards. The point is, the radical imams are the only imams being hired. So any practicing Muslim that attends a mosque is being manipulated politically to STFU.

They successfully forced the means to effect sharia already, wouldn't you agree? Legislators no longer represent constituents, but effect authoritarianism. "What" the authoritarians dictate changes. Through eugenic forced health care, "citizens" are mere property of the state. No exemption for males outside of the ruling class. That's worse than Sharia persecution of only women and children as property to be used and abused. At least in Sharia Law, you have to take an eye before your eye is taken. Not so according to Marxists who take your body, soul and property though you took nothing from anyone, having spent your existence already contributing to society.

Which is why BEFORE committing to their utter destruction, we be damned sure that's the only way and not sacrifice our finest young men and women to "prove" our humane generosity, failing to maintaining distance/confinement of aggressors via alert military and secure borders with ICE and FBI supplying GITMO with terrorists while the CIA pinpoints foreign targets for air strikes.  Because even if correct, this reeks of the self delusion that to date only those sympathetic to Jihad, African tribalism, and Communism have played, genocidal monopoly.

One day he is telling the Reverend to burn the devil book.  The next day, he's saying, hold off.  Now, he's saying maybe.

Either the rev. has a screwed up connection, like maybe he is getting signal through his rice crispies, but maybe he buys an off brand, and so the message comes through kind of garbled.  And so, "I want you to buy a conversion van and swing by the junior high" comes out sounding like "I want you to burn the koran and who cares if people die."

Or, maybe the rev. put teaspoons rather than tablespoons of rat poison in the koolaid, and he is just tripping out.

It's been making me a little sick to my stomach for the better part of a decade.   I'm afraid history is back with a dull knife under a burka.

Don't underestimate the power of zealous fanatical belief in one's divine superiority.  It's been driving human warfare for millenia.

And the worst part: even total submission to Islam just brings us in to the ongoing Sunni-Shia war which is brewing between Iranian-Persian Shia and the Arab Sunni.   So submission for peace is literally not an option.  Though I'm sure there are plenty of wannbe rhinoceri (Eugene Ionesco) out there anyway.

Not necessary.  Just keep doing nothing and Iran will kick over the lantern soon enough.   The most ignored vitally important story of the last few years is all the Arab nations kicking off "peaceful nuclear programs" after Iran.

anyone who desecrates a Bible should be beheaded, anyone who leaves Christianity should be hunted down and executed, anyone trying to convert a Christian should be arrested and whipped until they die ["what? you sure? okay"]

Ooops, I meant Islam. My bad. Never mind.

Jones and the Muslims deserve each other. They are "two peas in the same pod", as my grannie said. As much as Jones is detestable, it isn't impossible that Musri told him he would talk to the parties in New York. Ace, priests talk to other priests.

If the FBI had been sent down to "talk" with Jones it will reignite the "is Obama a Muslim" question, and the Black Panther controversy. I see an audit in his future(s).

All this furor over a fringe lunatic group of 30-50 people. By the way, they've been burning American flags overseas. I thought that these people were dirt poor. Where did they get the money, and who is supplying the flags?

148 Powerline has an interesting point today -- why did the FBI visit Jones the other day? Was the visit designed to intimidate him? To warn him that they had info that someone was out to kill him? To tell him that they were there to arrest him immediately on some trumped-up charge unless he agreed to stop the Koran-burning? Recall that Jones cratered almost immediately after the FBI visit.

And I'm not buying the "stop the burning, move the mosque" line. It sounds like a suggested cover story to me.

150 Musri is a Hamas supporter, an ally of George Galloway, and Charlie Crist, not a mean hat trick to pull, I wouldn't be surprised that he put the 'good pastor' up to it,
