LAT Headline: "Obama Encouraged by Steady Unemployment Rate"
— Ace

That's right; your eyes do not deceive you.

You just saw them put on a positive spin on a persistent, soulcrushing, lifestealing 9.7% unemployment rate. (16.8% real unemployment rate, and climbing.)

Oh, and AP's now tracing the Pentagon shootings right back to the office of Senator Jim DeMint.

Thanks to Slu and Gabe.

1 9.7% under Obama is a larger number than ~5% under Bush, so Obama is betterer. Don't you understand numbers and stuff? Silly wingnuts.

2 And I think that the discouraged workers rate is 16.5% nationally.  (Krauthammer quoted that figure as underemployed, but I think he's wrong about that.)

Obama Encouraged by Steady Unemployment Rate

Of course Barry Ogabe is encouraged by it, because he can just proclaim capitalism a great big failure and institute a socialist takeover upon any sector he wishes and make big government look like a saviour.  He's taking notes from Chavez here.

This ain't a bug, its a feature.

OT: another Friday news dump from the Obama Administration.

U.S. to cut nukes, reduce their role in national security

In the statement, Obama pointed to the persistent threat of nuclear proliferation and the importance of the NPT. "Today, the threat of global nuclear war has passed, but the danger of nuclear proliferation endures, making the basic bargain of the NPT more important than ever."

Question: If nuclear proliferation endures, how can the threat of global nuclear war have passe?

36 stuiec:  This is a quote from a "man on the street" interview conducted just prior to Barry's arrival in Savannah, Tuesday, by the local fish wrap (The Savannah Morning News):

Onnie Copeland:  "We need money.  We don't have no money.  We don't have no way to get it.  Please help us get some for groceries and housing."

John Green:  (Wants to see the president fund more job training for convicted felons like Green himself.)  "We need something to keep you from being back on the streets.  When you ain't making no money, you go back to your old you."

Dana Fehsenfeld, a young mother hanging out in Forsyth Park with her baby daughter Burdie Lopez-Ibanez, wishes the president would kiss her daughter:  "It would be like royalty."

And there are more.  Damn it.  Sigh.

37 You know, Harry Reid has an excuse for calling 36,000 more unemployed "a great day": he's a low-grade cretin.

But the only way to explain the L.A. Times headline is that the headline writer is fed up with Obama.  I mean, there are so many other ways to spin that news with a different headline that it must have been a deliberate choice to word it so as to make Obama sound like a callous bastard.

Posted by: stuiec at March 05, 2010 04:51 PM (GU29T)

38 I've got a strong 1977-78 vibe going here.  Even most news stories say that full employment is at least five years away.  America's epitaph is on everyone's lips, much like the Malaise Days.

Question is, is there a Reagan, or even Reagan lite, that's waiting on the horizon?

Posted by: nickless at March 05, 2010 04:52 PM (MMC8r)

39 Why is it the Democrats can do no wrong, see no wrong, hear no wrong, or speak no wrong from their side of the Isle. The only wrongs they have is when their hand is caught in the cookie jar, or their hand is playing with their or somebodys else's zipper?

Posted by: mystry at March 05, 2010 04:52 PM (kmgIE)

40 And if you multiply the new unemployment gains, 16.5% to 16.8% or 0.3%, times the public sector workforce of 153 million, you get the jolly encouraging figure of now over 25 million unemployed and an increase for Feb of about 420,000 more unemployed. The simple math no one wants you to do.

Figures don't lie, it's the people who use them who do.

90 In fact, Larry Kudlow, that great conservative economist (at least National Review publishes his stuff), thinks we're in a "recovery."

Kudlow is so permabull that he was probably calling the Lehman collapse "a minor blip that the markets will shrug off"

Pump billions into a stock market index to create an illusion of recovery while millions of businesses watch for the Grim Reaper. Kudlow needs to leave Manhattan now and then.

Kudlow is more dangerous because he's still taken seriously. Cramer is just kept around for laughs.

92 Anybody read Taranto's Best of the Web?  He got Krugman good.  Quoted Krugman's own textbook at him to contradict the stupid crap he was spewing in his column.

Unemployment keeps consumption down and thereby keeps the sky from falling.

Haven't you heard of the paradigm shift for Detroit?

It's called abandon city. Better get out before it caves in.

Oh, the city of Detroit was abandoned like 40 years ago, and is already caved in.

The rest of the area is somewhat civilized.

Except for the libtards. However, once they lose their cushy union gigs, they'll leave, thus changing the balance from libtard to normals.

The only thing I expect is that next month's figures will be unexpected.

When unemployment drops, inflation will explode.

I'm watching John McCain.  He's a reasonably guy.  Weak and a Country Club member, but weak.  He STILL doesn't get it.  DO YOU M&M's get it yet?

OBAMA is not signing ANYTHING that doesn't CREATE GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED HEALTH  CARE and more GOVERNMENT  CONTROL of the ECONOMY.

That's what this game has been about all along.   Do you people get it yet?????

101 By OPP, I meant the Office of Polar Programs

The warming weather has sparked a warning from the OPP for drivers to avoid distractions on area highways this weekend.

And police are also urging people to stay off ice-covered waterways as the ice is weakened by the balmy, spring-like temperatures of 6 Celsius and sunshine.

“Motorists, statistically, tend pay less attention to their driving when the weather is bright, sunny and warm,” said Sgt. Dave Rektor, of the OPP’s Western region headquarters.

“We encourage all drivers to obey all the rules of the roads, and don’t get distracted during this nice stretch of weather headed our way.”

Regarding the waterways, Rektor said the water beneath the ice is still frigid.

“This time of year, the warmth from the sun begins to make ice surfaces very unstable and unpredictable and venturing out onto the ice this time of year poses a significant and imminent danger,” he said.

“Parents and caregivers of young children are encouraged to keep them well back from all waterways and don’t allow them to play around the banks of creeks, rivers or streams which are very slippery.“

105 Obama is doing everything he can to keep the economy in the toilet, but there is a real danger that it will somehow start to get better despite his best efforts and the MSM heap praise on his policies if it does.  So in a sense, it's better long term if things stay bad for a while.  Of course I understand why older funemployed people with families to take care of might feel differently.

Its all about lowering expectations.   Just as trillion has taken the place of billion,  9.7 is now the benchmark employment rate. The media will make it so.
